They did the Woldo in another episode- you can clearly see the difference between the heavy, powerful woldo and the light and agile naginata. I suspect with the lack of good steel in Japan in the early middle ages there was less armor so the weight wasn't' as crucial.

It should be noted that the naginata that women typically used was the ko-naginata, which had a smaller blade than the men's o-naginata. This was because of the heavy pole which makes the naginata slower than a sword, and so the ko-naginata compensates for the women's smaller body mass and strength compared to an armored warrior. What they're making here is the o-naginata.

It's why reproduction polearms are so hard to come by, most fail in tests like this.

All the people that thought the guy who won was genuinely upset because the other competitors weapon failed are a bunch of suckers. That guy is a snake, hypocrite. You can see right through him.

It's always the weakest link that breaks. Both men were experts at forging and knew how to work metal. But they did not have the same level of expertise when it came to woodwork and construction.

I dont think samurai existed 1000 years ago, its earlier something like 1300 if im not wrong

The earliest Samurai/Bushi appeared during the Late Heian Period/Early Kamakura period, so roughly at the beginning of the 11th century. Similar warrior classes existed much earlier, but this time period was when the word "Samurai" first started being used.
The first Samurai were primarily fought using longbows from horseback, but the Naginata was a popular choice for melee combat.
