  • The two songs are lip-synched, but the impromptu jingles more than make up for it.

IF YOU THINK THE CAMERA LOVED HER, YOU REALLY SHOULD HAVE SEEN HER UP CLOSE AND IN PERSON. SHE WAS ABSOLUTELY STUNNING. SHE CARRIED HERSELF WITH SO MUCH DIGNITY AND GRACE,THAT HER INNER BEAUTY ALSO OVERWHELMED YOU. SHE WAS SO CARING,AND GENEROUS WITH HER TIME, AND HER HEARTFELT ADVICE. WHEN SHE LEFT THIS EARTH, SHE TOOK A LARGE PIECE OF MY HEART WITH HER. I TRULY MISS YOU PRETTY LADY.

I met Phyllis on several occasions when she came to Birmingham to visit family. Soon we became fast friends and everyone she was in town we painted the town Red and then some. She loved to dance and together dance we did. As a RN now, looking back I never picked up on the emotional Demond’s she was fighting. When I heard of her death it came as a shock but didn’t surprise me because I knew more about her at that time. She had major issues with her appearance, some prescription medications and just an overall unhappiness even though she had the world watching her. Oh, yeah it was fun being out with her and in her company but after awhile she was just one I considered as a dear friend. I always wonder what would have become of her had she not passed. I know in my heart she would have been bigger than Whitney. I miss you Phyllis. I miss you so much. Your voice was lyrical. Take care amongst all the angels my dear. I will see you one day. D

Yes! I have always been in love with Ms. Phyllis. In the Mid seventies I was attending college and a friend of mine had started dating this nice girl. So one day after classes we stopped by her home. During the ride over he stated that he had a surprise for me. About an half a hour later ( sitting on her front porch) a car pulled up in the drive way. A tall beautiful lady stepped out. I paused, tried to refocus because I could not believe who I was looking at... It was Ms. Phyllis Hyman! My friend knew how much I loved Ms. Hyman. After introductions she kissed me on the cheek and wished me well in my studies. My friend's girlfriend is the niece of Ms. Hyman. I will never, ever forget this event! ( Of course I got her to take a photo with me and autograph her album cover.)

There is no singer today that could do what she did with her vocals. Amazing.

I hate when ppl REFUSE to believe the truth. Would rather believe a conspiracy- WITH NO REAL EVIDENCE- yet ALL her family and close friends verify the fact that she'd been depressed and suicidal for YEARS. She was bipolar. Diagnosed in 1985. Her mother suffered from manic depression when Phyllis was a toddler. 4 of her 6 siblings also had mental disorders. One is even schizophrenic. Unsung verified it AND her book goes into detail about it.

Thank you for this. You must realize in person she radiated such beauty, confidence, dignity & class it was impossible to tell unless in her inner circle 24/7.
Phyllis did not respond to her medicine for bipolar disease. In hindsight I'd believe she had BPD, borderline personality disorder, and may have thrived under intense therapy of 3 days a week instead, if re diagnosed.
We unfortunately will never know and the world truly has lost someone unique & very, very special.

Whenever I hear a Phyllis Hyman song I stop what I'm doing and remember her with fondness. This is my favorite song and I drive my friends crazy when I do an accompaniment.

She was beautiful, she was funny and interesting, and she had a sexy raspy voice!

I have always loved her voice. She is very rare and so under rated. Her looks are straight out of Vogue. GORGEOUS! She is very unique like Tina & Diana with their own sense of style in voice & looks, but top-notch. I just wish she would have found herself & took care of herself on the inside & outside.
