@@Das644 it doesn’t have to be mainstream … it was limited in the 2000s and they basically pushed the sound anyway. But does that mean they don’t do stuff like this anymore? Whitney isn’t “good” she is GREAT… Phyllis is boring that’s why she had hardly any success in sales and songs. She has passion but no vocal presence. Whitney tells a story when she sings and never does the same version twice. That’s a true artist there. Phyllis was a emotionally filled singer with lack of vocal clarity and substance. She is good for one genre and one genre only and that’s Jazz. Whitney could do it all

How could an absolutely beautiful talented artist like Phyllis Hyman be gone nearly 26 years .
We where so lucky to have sophisticated artists like Jean Carne , Angela Bofill, Anita Baker etc.
And in 1995 this wonderful women felt the need to take her own life.
When you watch this mesmerising performance you can see the pain and unhappiness, you see the facade fall, that whistle along made the hairs on my back rise , she was a one of a kind , depression is a deeply destructive illness and we was robbed of this talent.
I watch this and feel sad , but I remember her performance in London
and the power and emotional of her voice , it was a privilege to see her…..

Whoa oh I can't stand this living all alone
Oh I don't want to be alone
I love ya, and I need ya
    Come back to me
    No! Come back to me
    Ooh yeah
Oh I, I don't want to be alone"
    1986. Album: Living All Alone.
Songwriters: Kenneth Gamble / Cynthia De Mari Biggs / Dexter Gilman Wansel

Flawless. No other words apply. That cry at 4:11 - she lived and felt every note. Some people feel very deeply and we usually lose them way too early. xoxo

I am still listening to this song, January 26, 2020. RAP is NOT music. It is people talking fast almost like poetry. Music is someone that can sing and sound good. I am a 1955 baby and growing up in the 60's & 70's, I listened to artists that could sing like the Delfonics, Moments, Black Ivory, Blue Magic, Spinners, Temptations, the Supremes, Jackson 5, Earth Wind & Fire, Chicago, War, Minnie Ripperton, Marvin Gaye, Barry White, Diana Ross, DIONNE WARWICK, NATALIE COLE, Roberta Flack, Phyllis Hyman, Donny Hathaway, The Chi-Lites, The O'Jays, The Miracles, The Stylistics, The Dramatics, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Heatwave, Luther Vandross, Melba Moore, Martha & the Vandellas, and Ray, Goodman, & Brown. These are just a few great black artists that truly can sing. RAP should NOT be included at the Grammy's. They should have a special awards show for RAP artists. As I write this, I am listening to Phyllis Hyman. This woman was underrated. RIP Ms. Hyman. Listen to this woman's voice on live television. What a voice!

THE LIFE, THE LOVE, THE PAIN, OF TRULY FEELING ALONE. NOT HAVING THAT ONE PERSON YOU TRULY DEEPLY LOVED. THE ONLY PERSON THAT LOVED YOU AND YOU FELT IT, NEVER TO FEEL IT AGAIN. THE BUSINESS YOU NEVER REALLY WANTED TO GET INTO, BUT ONCE IN YOUR IN. SHE IS A CANCER SIGN AND CANCERS ARE EXTREMELY SENSITIVE CREATURES AND GET HURT VERY QUICKLY, AND THAT HURT AND PAIN STAYS. IT DOESN'T GO ANYWHERE. EVER! SHE SETTLED FOR SOMEONE TO BE WITH JUST BECAUSE SHE WAS TIRED OF BEING ALONE, BUT IT WASN'T TRUE LOVE. SHE SAYS COME BACK TO ME JHON IF YOU LISTEN CLOSELY. I LOVE YOU PHYLLIS HYMAN! I AM YOU IN SO MANY WAY'S, AND I AM AN AQUARIUS. So misunderstood and so lonely. No one ever see's the inside just the exterior, which usually is always together. Lord only knows what happened the day you were found dead. But I'm sure your happy now. 😢😘 I truly love you. You are greatly magnificent in your god given gift! Thank you for sharing it with the world. Those who know of you are truly blessed to be apart of your legacy. Thank you so much. May god keep you always. Amen.

Isn't she incredible? I just discovered her a couple weeks ago. Her name should be as well known as Whitney's. I actually think she's better because she's got more soul in her singing.

Phyllis Hyman was right up there with Whitney Houston. Had she had wanted to delve into other genres, her sheer and in-depth talent would have easily allowed her to cross over to a variety of arenas.
Sadly, the Entertainment business is a sick and manipulating world. It can make or break just about anyone.
Although Whitney Houston is my all time favorite female vocalist, if Phyllis would have been provided with just 1/10th of the support and resources that Clive Davis made available to Whitney, she too would have become a household name.
In addition, when it comes to smooth jazz, It would be criminal if anyone says that Phyllis doesn’t shine supreme over Whitney in this specific area of music.
