I met Miss Hyman back in 1985 when she was in the audience at Yoshi's on Claremont. It was, I think, a Thursday night, which at the time tended to be local jazz and blues bands. I played flugelhorn for a couple of local groups at the time and sang a few songs. We had a 30 minute set and were doing one of my songs when all of a sudden this voice just bloomed from the audience and she stood up and literally took over. 💚Contraltos make my life happy💚 No one compares to her, EVER. Her improvisational singing skills (partly taught by the great Jean Carne, apart of the Normon Connors stable with her), whistling in songs and phrasing/clarity is top notch👌😑😑😑
Phyllis was such a beautiful, poised, unique singer. Her tone and elegant delivery is so unique. Discovered her few months ago, and I’ve been hooked ever since. Jazmine Sullivan could play her in a Biopic, they look alike, and have similar tessituras.
Phyllis Hyman was phenomenal woman & powerful singer. Her legacy will never be forgotten. We both share the same birthday🥳 . Mental illness/Mental health is real. I battle with Clinical Depression/Anxiety so I can relate to how she was feeling.
I needed this video. While I'm familiar with her hits, I've never seen her career broken down like this. I hate that I had to become an adult to fully appreciate what we lost in 1995. I wish she knew that she would be affecting generations of singers and music lovers after her.
I wish Clive Davis had not told her that performing in "Sophisticated Ladies" is going to hurt her music career. That kind of cruelty shouldn't be allowed to exist.
@@Rosannasfriend I wouldn't call it a reupload. Remake is more accurate. This version focuses more on vocal pedagogy and the technique behind her voice, as well as her jazz background. I don't remember this level of detail on the previous version.
This focuses on her vocal style and ability. If you want to know about the real Phyllis, read her book, "Strength Of A Woman." She was mentally ill; diagnosed as bi-polar and borderline schizophrenic. I saw her many times in concert, and you'd never ever know it. Where everyone who was close to her, as well as those who worked very closely with her, WOULD witness it - see it, hear it, and FEEL it - was backstage. Toward her final days, her mental illness(es) would cause her to take up abusing alcohol, drugs, and food. But what was messing up her voice was SMOKING. In her more slender years, she would weight around 160± pounds (remember, she was 6'-1"). And in her book it is indicated that at one point she reached some 325 pounds (see her in this video @21:52).
Was honored to see her live at the Blue note, the woman was so talented vocally, she could whistle as well as she sang. Amazing talent gone too soon. May she rest in peace.
Phyllis is incomparable in every way possible no wonder why they called her the sophisticated lady she dressed and looked like the way she Sanged elegant and sophisticated!!!
....she loved to sew....she rocked other designers work...costume designers too....but she loved to SEW.....so you KNOW she was going to be TURNED OUT...her album covers are a serious lesson in SOPHISTICATION....
Phyllis had such an amazing voice. I saw her perform in DC the last year before she took her life in 94 at the Carter Barron Amphitheater. Another hidden talent of hers was whispering. She whistled, "Living All Alone" with such amazement that I was floored.
Living All Alone is my all time favorite. Sacred Kind of Love and her cover of Betcha By Golly Wow are phenomenal as well. Got to see her at Blues Alley in DC in the early 90's.
It was a privilege to discover Phyllis Hyman during the 70s and 80s while I was living in St. Louis, where jazz is very much appreciated. We had 3 radio stations that played jazz most of the time. I loved her music instantly. I have her 2 disc greatest’s and love still listening to her to this day. What a genius, and misunderstood artist. I miss her. Blessings to you and everyone!
Phyllis Hyman was one of a kind. A totally distinctive and unique talent that I miss more as time goes by. Her power, and the emotive wallop of her voice, is unparalleled.
YESSSSSSSSSSSS❤ THANK YOU so much for doing Phyllis Hyman. I know you are a huge fan of hers along with the rest of us watching this. She is often overlooked and doesn't get much talk nowadays. Other than the Unsung episode and one or two interviews from colleagues on youtube, no one else has really done another documentary or mini episode about her. We all want to learn more about her and her history. So again thank you sooooo much for this treat. Vesta Williams, Angela Bofill, along with Phyllis Hyman are artists that I'm truly interested in and fell in love with their music. Hopefully we can get more information on Vesta's singing style and background and maybe even an Interview with Angela Bofill 🤞🏾🤞🏾 (although I know she has the speaking irregularity from the strokes). Thank You so much 👍🏾🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thinking about people expecting her type of voice to sound like a man reminds me of her duet with Jon Lucien. There definitely is a difference. I loved it the first time you covered it and it's great to be reminded again. I'm glad you used her song with Grover Washington Jr because that was a song heavily in rotation with my parents as well as "meet me on the moon". She has so many great songs. I'll add, after loving her for years of my childhood and not knowing about her untimely passing, I feel very emotional listening to "I'll be around" by McCoy Tyner and Phyllis. It's a big song anyway, to me very dramatic. It takes you on a journey like most her ballads. But something about her wanting love and be unlucky, emotional lability, her unappreciated talent, and that way she handles the song after the piano bridge has commence... it's haunting. Maybe it's just me that feels that. It's just like trying to listen to Donny Hathaway sing"I love you more than you'll ever know" or "Someday we'll all be free" with his background but I felt something before learning about that. Then I can listen to many songs by them and simply enjoy them and sing along. Maybe I'm just being extra.
I remember that summer. One of my best! I was very young but definitely remember hearing the news of her passing on MTV and my dad was devastated-also the same year or few months after Selena passed as well. Years later as an adult, she is one of my top favorite voices 💜💐👑✨ as always, thank you & love love love this channel 🫶🏾✨
I remember the day we found out she took her life...it was such a shock. I listen to her music on a playlist several times a week...preserving her legacy is important. RIP Phyllis.
I would kill for you to do an analysis on Donna Summer. Her disco years are beloved but there's relatively little appreciation for her powerful, skillful voice. As she aged her voice just got richer and fuller, despite the loss of much of her upper range. One of the greatest voices of all time.
I am beyond thankful you created this for our girl PH. You’re right… She never got her flowers 💐 while she was here! She was such a talented artist but so deeply troubled and the industry really did a number on her. She truly was the premier Jazz vocalist of her generation. Period. Thank you! Somewhere up there Phyllis Linda Hyman is looking down on you and smiling 😊 knowing that her legacy lives on through people like us 🙏🏽✨
Phyllis is just simply AMAZING across the board. We need a biopic on her, and I want Jasmine Sullivan to play her! This is a story that needs to be told.
She was my all time favorite! I loved this video. Thank you for educating us on how skilled she was and how well she knew her skill set. She reminded me a lot of Rachelle Farrell's first Album. I would love to hear him analyze Melba Moore's, Rachelle's, Vesta's, Shelia of The Emotions, Minnie's and Mickie Howard's voices!
I remember seeing her in Detroit at Baker's Lounge. She was even better live! When she died--I couldn't imagine the pain of her loves & family. Thanks & Bravo 👏🏾 Mikil

Phyllis will forever be one of my favorite singers ever! There are so few singers where you can feel their emotion and it touches you like the way her voice did. I'm so glad I get to experience her music. Her life was definitely not in vain, and her music has left a big impact on me.
I was a fan since her first Buddha album and loved everything that followed. I saw her perform about a half dozen times, mostly at small Jazz clubs, like the Blue Note in Greenwich Village. Also saw her in Sophisticated Ladies. Love your analogy of her vocal roots and musical style. Her Jazz chops were a throwback to the 50’s, but modern and fresh. But, I always heard shades of the sounds of the Philadelphia R n B male groups from the mid 60’s to early 70’s. She took that sound to a new level that has yet to reached by a female vocalist. No slight to Patti Labelle, because then we would be talking about apples and oranges; there’s no comparison. Thank you for posting this video. You are an amazing historian.
This series is sooo helpful ! Especially for someone who doesn't know their range and would like to try finding music that fits them or knowing how to transition music to their range ! I adore this ! Lol
Can I just say THANK YOU for covering this absolute ICON?! it’s so sad that people don’t know who she is and especially that she retired from living before her time was up. AS A TEENAGER, MUSIC AND MUSICIANS OF MANY RACES, ETHNICITIES, STYLES AND GENRES WERE STEPPING OUT AND STEPPING UP WHEN OPPORTUNITIES WERE SPONTANEOUSLY OFFERED, PRESENTED OR CREATED. BECAUSE AND IN ADDITION TO "THE STYLE" OF VOCALS AND MUSIC THAT WAS BEING "VOCALIZED" ON AND WITH IS.... DOES IT MATCH OR MESH WITH......THE ARTIST AND THE ARTISTS' VOCAL EXPRESSIONISM? PHYLLIS HYMAN'S STORY STILL "TROUBLES" ME BECAUSE I WAS JUST "THAT IN LOVE WITH HER AND HER STATUESQUE BEAUTY AND VOCAL EXPRESSIONISM". I WASN'T SURE.... ABOUT "WHY" HER EXPRESSIONISM UNTIL 😢. WHILE HER AND HER VOCAL EXPRESSIONISM WERE STELLAR.... SOMETHING WAS OFF. I WAS ENAMORED BY HER BUT WATCHING HER PERFORM.... REALLY TROUBLED ME IN WAYS THAT I WAS TOO YOUNG TO ELABORATE ON. IN CLOSING. I'M ALMOST 60 AND MY PROFESSIONAL AND MINISTERIAL CAREERS ARE LITERALLY "CHOCKED" WITH STORIES LIKE PHYLLIS HYMAN'S AND THE OUTCOMES WEREN'T ALWAYS THE SAME. I'LL STOP HERE......FOR NOW. 🙏 BECAUSE I DIDN'T REALIZE UNTIL JUST NOW THAT "THE DEATH" ☠️ OF PEOPLE THAT I EITHER LOVED OR CARED FOR. OR. THAT LIST OF PEOPLE THAT "I LIVED AND CARED FOR" ARE DIFFERENT STYLES OF PAIN AND GRIEVING.
I had no idea she had passed until I saw it in the paper. That was the one time I wished God didn't give me an answer so quickly. I was in my kitchen, reading the paper. I thought to myself, "I wonder when my girl's gonna come out with a monster jam" ..... I turned the page and that's when I found out she had passed. It felt like I had been punched in the gut, the air let out of my balloon and the wind taken out of my sail all at once. I sat there stunned for a few minutes before I could turn the page. Her and Angela Bofil NEVER got the recognition they deserved. RIP Phyllis Hyman and Angela Bofil
Jazmine Sullivan could play her in a Biopic, they look alike, and have similar tessituras.
and are both from philly !
Her voice was musky , sexy , silky sublime ,deep and soulful meaningful always gives me chills. Gods gift she was
Phyllis Hyman was phenomenal woman & powerful singer. Her legacy will never be forgotten. We both share the same birthday🥳 . Mental illness/Mental health is real. I battle with Clinical Depression/Anxiety so I can relate to how she was feeling.
Her voice, her image, her beauty, her charisma. We miss you Phyllis! I hope your soul has found the peace it deserves.
One of my mom’s all-time favorites. So glad to see this video recognize her greatness.
Mine too. She would play Prime Of My Life 24/7.
OMGGG I CLICKED OVER SOOO FAST!! I learn so much from this channel and now you're doing one of my favorites??? Omggg this heaven ‼️💜💜
Me Too!!
It seems that he reuploaded this actually. He had this up a few months ago. I guess he added a few more details to it.
Omg I did to when I seen her name I clicked so quick lol 😆 😂
@@Rosannasfriend I wouldn't call it a reupload. Remake is more accurate. This version focuses more on vocal pedagogy and the technique behind her voice, as well as her jazz background. I don't remember this level of detail on the previous version.
This focuses on her vocal style and ability. If you want to know about the real Phyllis, read her book,
"Strength Of A Woman." She was mentally ill; diagnosed as bi-polar and borderline schizophrenic.
I saw her many times in concert, and you'd never ever know it. Where everyone who was close
to her, as well as those who worked very closely with her, WOULD witness it - see it, hear it, and
FEEL it - was backstage. Toward her final days, her mental illness(es) would cause her to take up
abusing alcohol, drugs, and food. But what was messing up her voice was SMOKING. In her more
slender years, she would weight around 160± pounds (remember, she was 6'-1"). And in her book it
is indicated that at one point she reached some 325 pounds (see her in this video @21:52).
QUEEN PHYLLIS HYMAN! One of the Greatest Voices Ever ! Phyllis’s Voice was immaculate, Her Catalog was amazing, and she’s just a Queen!!!!!
You Know How To Love Me is one of my favorites, it makes me feel so warm and nostalgic. She is missed.
Was honored to see her live at the Blue note, the woman was so talented vocally, she could whistle as well as she sang. Amazing talent gone too soon. May she rest in peace.
i feel liker her aura and looks translate well into a Disney princess
Phyllis is incomparable in every way possible no wonder why they called her the sophisticated lady she dressed and looked like the way she Sanged elegant and sophisticated!!!
....she loved to sew....she rocked other designers work...costume designers too....but she loved to SEW.....so you KNOW she was going to be TURNED OUT...her album covers are a serious lesson in SOPHISTICATION....
I loved her rendition of Betcha by Golly Wow. I read somewhere that the singer in the stylistics, loved her cover.
Phyllis had such an amazing voice. I saw her perform in DC the last year before she took her life in 94 at the Carter Barron Amphitheater. Another hidden talent of hers was whispering. She whistled, "Living All Alone" with such amazement that I was floored.
I’m always mesmerized by Phyllis Hyman’s voice!
SOOOOO HAPPY you covered Phyllis Hyman. I absolutely LOVE her and her voice. Such a unique voice.
Living All Alone is my all time favorite. Sacred Kind of Love and her cover of Betcha By Golly Wow are phenomenal as well. Got to see her at Blues Alley in DC in the early 90's.
May she RIP. What an amazing, soulful voice. She had a lot of classic R&B songs. Like Chaka Khan she did not have a religious singing background.
This was a phenomenal documentary on the life and career of Phyllis hyman.
I stopped what I was doing to click. Phyllis was ahead of her time musically. I wish she would have gotten the appreciation she deserved.
Thank You so much 👍🏾🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I love your videos! You should do one on Rachelle Ferrell's voice. And an interview with her would be great since we hardly hear from her anymore.
I just donated under Sunburst Body Souffle.
After you did Anita and Phyllis Hyman, I just had to donate!!
Keep doing what you do!!
Phyllis Hyman is undeniable talent. She had the looks. voice. stage presence. One of my favorites. Please one on Deniece Williams.
I don’t think you’re being extra. You are valid in what you hear because it is their spirit/soul coming out via emotion and singing/music.
A friend from work told me about her..She was playing @ The Hyatt Regency in Phoenix!! Thank you Rebecca Sanchez !!
One of the most important artist to impact my life through song! She will forever be remembered in my heart! 💕💕💕 Thank you for this!
Damn that's right I forgot she passed the same year as her. So sad.
What great timing! I was jamming to her ‘Somewhere in My Lifetime’ album all this morning.
I'm new to Phyilly Hyman I discovered her year ago RIP 🙏 ms Hyman
She was my all time favorite! I loved this video. Thank you for educating us on how skilled she was and how well she knew her skill set. She reminded me a lot of Rachelle Farrell's first Album. I would love to hear him analyze Melba Moore's, Rachelle's, Vesta's, Shelia of The Emotions, Minnie's and Mickie Howard's voices!
I remember seeing her in Detroit at Baker's Lounge. She was even better live! When she died--I couldn't imagine the pain of her loves & family. Thanks & Bravo 👏🏾 Mikil
I used to listen to Phyllis when I was going through some things. Her voice spoke to me and you could feel everything she sang.
Great video. One critique is Can't We Fall In Love Again was one of her highest charting albums. It was a moderate success for her.
I love that album.!
I love that song!
My heart kinda sunk at the end.
She's great, lemme revisit her catalog real quick...
You are so awesome 👌🏿
Would love Angela Winbush, my favorite R&B artist
Also onLisa Fischer
But thank you so much for Phyllis Hyman, She's my other favorite songstress!!!
I listen to her all the time. I have Loved her and her Beautiful voice most of my life. I have days when I can pick a day, and play nothing but nothing her songs over and over for that entire day all day. I am just so moved by her and so very sorry that she wasn’t happy in her life at times. She was a truly Great person and loved by many. ❤❤❤❤
I absolutely love your analytical critique of different singing styles.... now when I hear people sing I try to figure what range they are singing at! Lol thank you for the lessons!
Yes! You can tell he puts a lot of work into the details.
Phillis was in her own universe. There's no one that compares to her style of singing i just loved her voice. I can truly say ive had tge honor of seeing her live in concert. Totally amazing. Rip my beautiful diva .❤
Gosshhh... she channeled a lot of emotions there... True artist.
Phyllis is my favorite female vocalist. Her voice was so unique and beautiful.
She was like no other, so soulful. 🕊🙏🏽
A TRUE talent. She is missed. :(
You knocked this one out of the park........lol. Phyllis is one of my favorite singers. I loved ability to use her sexy sultry voice to tell stories. Thanks a million for sharing this!
Honorable mention: Her one pop song 🎵 I loved was 'you know how to love me'. Loved that song!!
One of the best vocalists!
Phyllis will forever be one of my favorite singers ever! There are so few singers where you can feel their emotion and it touches you like the way her voice did. I'm so glad I get to experience her music. Her life was definitely not in vain, and her music has left a big impact on me.
Her music healed my soul & she's one of my all time favorites. Thx for the content ✨
Can't put my finger on it, but she was SO UNIQUE. She could hit so many levels. Silky and smooth.
You are an amazing historian.
....she was on the PHILLY INTERNATIONAL label....so your ears serve you well....GAMBLE and HUFF LOVED HER....
I absolutely love her voice. 🥰
I really really got into Phillips Hyman because of this channel. Thank you so much.
This series is sooo helpful ! Especially for someone who doesn't know their range and would like to try finding music that fits them or knowing how to transition music to their range ! I adore this ! Lol
Love Phyllis Hyman-she got me through my college years musically! She was so gifted by God and a true diva! She will never be forgotten…love her much
I’m neither a musician nor vocalist, but I absolutely love hearing you educate us about the techniques and science of music. Amazing work!
I love Phyllis Hyman and love the explanation of her voice in this vid so thank you for this!
Incredible, trail-blazing, and pioneering vocalist.
It broke my heart when Phyllis left us......😢
Meet Me on the Moon is my all time favorite song by Phyllis Hyman
FINALLY SOMEONE IS RECOGNIZING HER!!
I’m so appreciative for this video! Phyllis Hyman is one of my favorite singers!
I will forever play her music, she was always amazing. I think of her often, so talented. 🙏✌️❤️
Can I just say THANK YOU for covering this absolute ICON?! it’s so sad that people don’t know who she is and especially that she retired from living before her time was up. First heard her in college and never looked back. It’s really nice to see others putting the respect on her name that she absolutely deserves.
This is certainly one of my favorite series...BMA has taught me so much about the artists I grew up with that I never knew before. Bravo to you for bringing these revelations to us!
Beautiful, poignant, rich, deep, and powerful legendary voice.
I love, love, love Phyllis Hyman 💕. The way her voice made me feel, I can't even describe it. I would listen to her songs over and over and wish I could sing like her. There was and there is now no one like her. She is unique. I miss her and her beautiful voice. Thank you so much for making this video. I absolutely love your channel I always learn so much. Every video is a master class. Thank you again.
thank you for this! i’ve loved phyllis hyman since i was like 6. my grandfather had her legacy cd and i was always captivated by her voice and how rich it was. this is a great breakdown! much love.
OMG, I clicked this so fast. I first learned about the great Phyllis Hyman, listening to dancehall tapes.....yup.
The really good sound systems would always play a lot of soul/funk/r&b/country/ballads/rock n roll.
Interesting I’m seeing more stories about Ms. Hyman now that has me looking into her stories. Another legend gone before her time.
Boy how I always loved Mrs Human,I have been so much into music all life, and to tell the truth, I think it saved me a time or two. What I realized about certain female singers with lower voice rang they seem to have more longevity and it seems that there singing gets better. People like Gladys Knight, Anita Baker, Rita Coolidge, oleta Adams, and I believe if she were still living Karen Carpenter, and more. Let me know if anyone agrees with me.
👑🎤🎵🎼🎶Phyllis We Love You!! SHE Is Such A Beautiful SOUL Who Continues To Live On💚❤️💛🖤
She's was brilliant! Clive wanted her to crossover musically. He ended up doing for Whitney Houston what he wanted to do for Phyllis Hyman.
Once Clive Davis found Whitney Houston, Phyllis Hyman and Angela Bofield were dropped when their contracts came for renewal.
Thank u so much for honoring her! She is the best vocalist to do it!!! She rarely gets her flowers and you did a wonderful job! Can't thank you enough!
🤗🥰❤️😘💋😍 I love Phyllis so much!!! Meet Me On The Moon is one of my many favorite songs of hers. Thank you for this video. We appreciate you and know it takes alot of time to do them.
One of my top vocal inspirations
Can you make more videos about contraltos? I think contraltos deserve more recognition
I will see what I can do. Thanks for watching 💕
@@MilikKashadTV ....have you heard her JAMES BOND theme song that was overlooked for another singer's version....a very sad moment in her career....PHYLLIS was also basically the 1st PLUS SIZED MODEL....she sewed her butt off and during that period in fashion a lot of the haute couturiers made sewing patterns....and she rocked them all ....with a serious fetish for HALSTON....during his ruffle period...she was also one of the 1st people to book the make up artist...REGGIE WELLS...who went on to become award winning and legendary for doing over a hundred cover issues of ESSENCE MAGAZINE....his iconic work with OPRAH for DECADES....and of course IMAN....PATTI....ANITA....WHITNEY....and BEYONCE...among many others...PH...was also known for her HATS....and DEEP PLUNGING NECKLINES.....smile....she was also very popular in the world of DRAG because of her smoky voice....when drag queens would perform her numbers the money would flow...SHE was INCREDIBLE in SOPHISTICATED LADIES....and no her label....with CLIVE DAVIS....did NOT like her doing the musical...maybe a combination of divided focus....or keeping her under his reins...however your video is just EXCELLENT....and yes i did learn somethings.....i have a very special place in my heart for her....the DIVA....that rocks the TORCH SONGS....that the DUKE...would approve of....
I hope Sade is somewhere in the near future! Great videos!
Her head voice sounds so beautiful in But I love You. The sound is full & dark in color.
My favorite female vocalist . Thanks that was great!
I get so sad everytime I hear or see her. She was really an gem.. literally an masterclass vocalist. She would sing circles around some. May her spirit rest on ❤️
Met her after her show at Club Bené in New Jersey.
She was so beautiful and stunning at the same time. She took time to talk to an in awe fan and signed a beautiful picture to me. I saw her at the Blue Note in New York previously and she gave a heck of a show, sounded better than the records and was definate in instructing her band when a sound was off.
She could whistle so beautifully as part of a song, so well it felt perfect the first time you heard it.
May she rest in peace and glory.
