    You're 100% right coach, alcohol is a subtle and seductive drug. It starts with a couple of beers on the weekend, which pretty soon turns into a couple of beers every night, and that then becomes six beers every night, which then becomes a bottle of wine, then two bottles of wine, and the amazing thing is you don't even notice it happening. You'd swear the devil himself had invented the stuff!

    • @geovaniraffaelli4508
      @geovaniraffaelli4508 3 месяца назад +4

      Like all addictions it's a slippery slope. We vastly overestimate our ability to control ourselves and delude ourselves into believing that we will be able to stop after giving in just this one time.
      "Not even once" is a good mantra to live by regarding these things.

    When I was a student (and a teetotaller), I really noticed how I always had a lot more money than my friends who smoked and drank. For them, it really was a significant portion of their meagre student budget. In Norway in particular, tobacco and alcohol are expensive as hell, but for some reason that has never stopped students from binging. I never saw the appeal, so I didn't do it. No regrets, neither. So teetotalling is not only good for mind and body, but good for your wallet as well.
    I often got asked by my friends, "but don't you miss it?" No, not remotely. How can I miss something I haven't even tried? "But don't you want to try?" No - again, what's the appeal? "But you might like it". Yes, but is it good to like something that's bad for you? Especially smoking, that's something I _really_ never understood. I don't know a single smoker who liked their first cigarette. But they forced themselves until they _did_ like it. To which I just have this to say: "Whyyyy?"

    • @KapteeniKaaos

      Dude, everyone likes their first cigarette. Nicotine hooks like nothing else.

    • @shaolinshadowsoldier
      @shaolinshadowsoldier 3 месяца назад

      For the multiple health benefits of regular nicotine intake, probably. You simply can't compare the liquid death of alcohol, to the plant medicine of tobacco.

    • @itskarl7575
      @itskarl7575 3 месяца назад

      @@chriswaters2327 First of all, it is impossible to become addicted through passive smoking. Some studies have suggested that second hand smoking increases _vulnerability_ to nicotine addiction, but for the passive smoker the amounts are simply not great enough to produce the same addiction. I grew up around smoking, too - smoking was omnipresent, everywhere you went. Never had any sort of withdrawal symptoms, all the same.
      Second, nicotine is one of the deadliest poisons out there. Nicotine in its _pure_ form does have some (but limited) health applications, but nicotine in tobacco? No. Tobacco does not just contain nicotine, but also tar and other nasty stuff that you really don't want in your lungs. You don't want nicotine in your lungs, either. It really isn't a scapegoat, as the science is completely unanimous here: smoking drastically increases the risk of cancer, asthma, cardio-vascular diseases and more. It really is every bit as bad as they say. Saying smoking has health benefits because nicotine is used in certain medicines (primarily to treat nicotine addiction!), is like saying whiskey has health benefits because of medicinal alcohol.

    • @itskarl7575
      @itskarl7575 3 месяца назад

      @@shaolinshadowsoldier Tobacco has NO health benefits. _Nicotine,_ an extremely potent poison, _can_ have some health benefits - but is almost exclusively used to treat nicotine addiction, so I don't really think you can count that as a point for nicotine. Alcohol has more medicinal use than nicotine, but that doesn't mean alcoholic beverages are _good_ for you. Ditto with nicotine. Nicotine is a poison, tar is no good for you either, and lungs have never benefited from smoke of any kind. If alcohol and tobacco are taken in moderation, tobacco is by far the worse of the two. It is only when drinking to the point of inebriation that alcohol overtakes tobacco.

    I'm curious about your views on alcohol consumption. You say it doesn't do a lick of good, but what about the moderate wine consumption that studies say is good for you? Of course this amount isn't enough to intoxicate you. Curious about your thoughts on that. Or the low alcohol amounts in mead and beer or the middle ages. I'm also curious about your stance about alcoholic cold medicine now that we're on the topic. Is it consumption or intoxication that's the problem and why?
    Also side note I've found some people don't trust you if you don't drink. They say your drunk self shows who you really are. Seems like an excuse to be vulnerable while staying manly to me but it's pretty common from what I see.

    I'd say its good in moderation, as with most things. It can help you relax, socialise with people and it's just a cultural norm from where I'm from to kick back with a beer in hand.
    For me, drinking helped me come out of my shell a lot. I used to have a lot of anxiety, but getting a little tipsy can really help with confidence, so that when you're sober, you've kinda learned how to make conversation, how to talk to people, striking the balance between humour and overboard etc. At least, that's what happened with me.
    When you've got a group group or you're meeting decent enough people, I found its helped me relax and made friendships closer. A lot of people say the same about other "psychoactive" drugs.
    That said, it's also taught me that I can be a dumb dumb, and if I drink a lot in a bad state of mind bad things happen.
    If you stay hydrated, eat well, and don't be stupid, you can avoid most of the issues, including the dreaded hangover and an overworked liver. And always do it to enhance enjoyment, never rely on it to make you feel good.
    That said, it's very easy to abuse, but that's usually from problems already there, only exacerbated by alcohol.
    TLDR; Nothing wrong with it. Has its benefits and drawbacks. Just be safe & smart like all things.

In my recent adult years i tried it because I wanted to be my own person and not be influenced sm by the bad in my life. I haven’t drank and don’t drink a lot. It’s alright, not my thing really. But I can understand and comprehend two opposites and extremes exist at the same time in this world. There’s people who can’t drink with binging, and there’s some who drink once a year. Those two people can leave in the same town, or even the same house. There’s a lot of components that makes these situations happen, nothing in life is as simple as black and white. If you look and think about it long enough, truly nothing is black and white. Life is gray, at least from my experience.

      @josephjuarez7548 Yes sir. I'm very lucky to not have an addictive personality, and to have good people around me when I do drink. I've definitely had terrible moments in my youth - only when I was blackout drunk - moments that definitely come from a dark corner within myself. Then again, I've also had really good moments and met great people that I otherwise wouldn't have had the courage/confidence to mingle with sober. For me, it just enhances whatever I'm feeling in the situation, or in life. If I'm happy, it makes me happier. If I'm sad, or angry, it makes me sadder and angrier. If my head ain't clear I ain't gonna have a good time, and I think the most problems is reliance. I'm lucky enough not to have a family history of alcoholism. It makes me sad to hear it, and the many people in these comments who have felt the need to force themselves sober. Makes me sad also that people think its the worst thing ever, like its naturally corruptive. I mean, as you say, it isn't black and white. You could say the same about fatty foods and gaming and all kinds of things people consume whilst socialising.
      One of my best pals, someone who was in our little 3 man party and pub group, recently gave up alcohol due to his mindset.
      Occasionally he'll still have a pint or two when we get food, but he'll never drink to feel the effects of it and doesn't want to get drunk anymore. We respect that. We still invite him out, but never pressure him into drinking.
      I appreciate your outlook, I kinda expected to get shot down for my comment.

I also heard I forgot where alcohol can destroy muscle growth which is detrimental to my hobby (really lifestyle but i feel ive been cheating on my martial artist dreams binge eating emotions and resting too much to say ive been faithful enough to martial arts to honestly say Ive been having it be a lifestyle I used to be way more consistent) what im trying to say is much respect to you as there is a lot of social pressure to drink and not drinking at all is something to be proud of and honestly really impressive. I wish i could say I've done that, but I've had my bad days and given in to a drink or 2 on occasion.

    I only ever use it as a sort of "nootropic supplement" for my hobby - Latino social dancing. Super mild doses, only when going to a party. Helps me get confidence, which then leads to me practicing and not just sitting on the edge of the floor, which then builds up confidence to eventually do it without any alcohol. This whole setup is how I got over most of my anxiously introverted character.

      It has nothing to do with peer pressure. Being drunk or high is fun, hence why it's been a universal staple of every single culture in human history, we have evidence of drug and alcohol use going back just about as far as we find humans, even pre-human hominids were deliberately eating fermented fruit.
      Just because something isn't "good" for you, doesn't mean you should avoid it. Life would be very boring and humans wouldn't be here with youtube to talk about it, we wouldn't have ever left the caves...

    my question for you Coach Ramsey, you ask me why would you you drink if it does not do you any good, so i ask if you use it as a reprise from the stresses of the world as a tool. If that tool allows me to handle more stress and challenge tomorrow, can that qualify as doing good? I am extremely unhappy with life, i don't live in accordance with my nature, or my instinctual drive. My mental state is fragile, ergo drinking allieviates the pressure, allowing me to accomplish more with what would otherwise be time spent anxious and stressed. The argument is that drinking brings you more pain and stress, loss of social standing, but a lot of that mental 'damage' is already done by a very early stage in development. It is a cope sure, but can we really classify it as bad altogether? Do you believe that all people can be happy without it? i do not mean to be melodramatic - drinking is one of the only things getting me through the day, and it is my only reason to move when i wake up in the morning. Appreiciate your insight Coach, this has been a battle. I had my first beer at the age of 1

    Hey Coach, How do you know when someone is really a southpaw? I'm teaching a karate class to elementary school kids. We were doing a simple boxing footwork drill with left foot forward, right foot back, and I had one young student consistently stepping back with the left, leaving right foot forward. The kids are still very new to all of this, it's possible she doesn't even know left from right yet, and it was just a repeated mistake. I asked her to switch to left foot forward, but my question is, at what point do you just let southpaw be a southpaw? Also, at what point is it a good idea to introduce switching stances and drilling right foot forward, if at all?

    Like you, I don’t consume alcohol. But I have had trouble defending this, particularly from a Christian perspective. Some Christians point out to me that Jesus drank wine (Luke 22:7-39), supplied wine to others (John 2:1-11), and actively encouraged others to drink wine (Matthew 26:17-30). Some of these folks are opposed to intoxication but are ok with mild alcohol consumption, especially wine. I would love your opinion!

I'd go so far as to say it's a malignant influence on regions and professions with a heavy drinking culture, but to say there are no positive uses for it seems unnecessarily limiting. For example is it only direct consumption that you object to or are rubbing alcohol, sanitizers and mouthwash off the table, so to speak? Finally, how do you interpret the water into wine story if not a tacit endorsement for its social use?

    Have you ever considered the difference between a noun which can be quantified by number and one that can be quantified by volume? For example, you can have a lot of water, very little water or no water at all. Similarly, you can have thousands of litres of water, hundreds of litres of water or zero litres of water. However, you cannot possibly have "zero water" because that makes no sense at all. People, young and old, have been trained to fail to understand such details and many will say things like "There is zero chance of me doing that", which of course, makes no sense at all. I will argue that this has nothing to do with grammar but is instead a matter of logic and the popular rejection of it. Of course, most people have also been trained to not care. Few people care when a few rivets burst out of the structure of a nearby damn, but when enough rivets fail, it will become a problem for everyone. 🙂

  • @MrMagnaniman

    I'm certainly not a teetotaler, but it really bothers me how much alcoholism is normalized and even celebrated. In particular, I was very dismayed by the "Mommy Wine Time" memes that were very popular several years ago. I've always felt that way to some extent, but I feel it much more strongly with age. Now that I'm in my early 40s, I've watched several of my childhood friends destroy their own lives through alcohol abuse.
    For you young guys out there... Yes, alcoholism can happen to you. If you're going to drink, here are a few tips that might help you to avoid developing a problem:
    -Save alcohol for special occasions. The problem is when you start drinking regularly. Even if it's just one a day. When always have regular doses of alcohol, it creates a physiological dependency -- alcoholism.
    -"I only drink on the weekends" is still regular, habit-forming drinking that can lead to alcoholism. Take some weekends off. Make an active point to have some weekend activities that don't involve drinking. Binge drinking can, admittedly, be fun, but it's increasingly less problematic the less often it occurs.
    -Learn your limit. If you tell me you've never had a bad time with alcohol, I don't believe you. Even people that have never had a single drop have had a bad time with alcohol. When you have a bad time, learn from it. Never drink to the point that you feel you can't control your actions, or you do things that you later feel rightfully ashamed of. Some people can't control themselves, so their limit for "responsible consumption" (i.e. not ruining one's life) is zero. That might be you.
    -Associate alcohol with activity rather than relaxation. For instance, having a great many drinks while putting in an honest, sweaty night of dancing is entirely possible without losing control of your faculties. My advice, though, would be to have a few to be social and work up the courage to get started (if you need it), and switch to water. (It should go without saying that this shouldn't include activities like driving or riding bicycles, where drunkenness is a serious risk to others, but I'm still going to say it)
    -Don't associate your masculinity with how much you can drink. That is stupid. A "Chad" takes accountability for himself and doesn't allow himself to be peer pressured.
    -Don't get blackout drunk. I've never been that drunk. I suspect that most of the claims of being that drunk are from people that don't want to take responsibility for their actions, but, even if I take their claims at face value, what's the point? You know you had fun because you don't remember? I don't get it. If you are legitimately getting that drunk and not getting violently ill, you're probably already an alcoholic. Stop drinking and get help.
    -Last, talk to your friends about it. Especially if you see one of them developing a problem. One of my biggest regrets of my early- and mid-20s is not always recognizing the signs of developing alcoholism in my friends, and failing to speak up when I did. If you're young, and you can encourage your friends to at least take periodic breaks from drinking, you might be able to help them avoid or mitigate a crippling, lifelong problem.

    Alcoholic drinks taste really good. Drinking is fantastic...but I don't like being drunk. If I'm spending an evening in a pub, as I did twice this week, we all drive and get the free refill coke/fanta. Wine, whisky, beer, cocktails with/after the right food though, love 'em. 1-2 is plenty though.
    Essentially what I'm saying is my justification for drinking is that the enjoyment can outweigh the harm, but there's a pretty low limit to that since, as you drink, enjoyment decreases gradually and harm increases rapidly. If non alcoholic drinks tasted as good, I wouldn't look back, the effect of consuming alcohol isn't a good one.
    Not saying I haven't been drunk or don't get drunk, couple of times a year at certain events it happens, but it's a by-product, never a goal.

      @@ninjafruitchilled That is true, there are a few non-alcoholic beers I enjoy - weirdly often from brands whose alcoholic beer I hate, since they're the excessively hoppy ones which works without the alcohol.
      That said, here in the UK at least there are a reasonable number of very good 2-4% beers so I tend to just go with those. The rest of the world seems to only do terrible beer in that range though...yet 0% ale is awful while 0% lager is OK.
      Non-alcoholic gin can be nice too. Honestly though, it seems odd to me that people are so obsessed with alcohol-free alcoholic drinks...it's like meat substitutes: thing that aren't pretending to be other things are usually better. Booze is perfectly fine, it’s like drugs and weed and smoking - the kind of people who overuse and abuse these things are typically deadbeats anyway and it’s not the booze that makes them make bad decisions. It just speeds up their descent to Hell. If you have the strength to just have 3 or 4 drinks and get home sensibly, you aren’t the person that will ruin your life drinking. Every single loose unit I have seen on the booze was a loose unit sober as well. 🎉
