- In this video I show you how to replace the upstream oxygen sensor on a 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999 or 2000 Honda Civic EX with the Vetec 1.6L D16Y8 engine. The upstream oxygen sensor is not on the manifold like most Honda 4 cylinder engines, its located underneath the car on the exhaust. In this video I use a Bosch 15730 universal oxygen sensor as a replacement. I do not recommend this if you have time to order the exact fit part. I was in a hurry and wanted to get this done in 1 day for as cheap as possible. I had to cut and splice on the old connector to the new oxygen sensor. I had codes P0135, P0170 and P0171 which were all related to the oxygen sensor failing. I had no drive-ability issues at all, just the CEL. After replacing the sensor, I cleared the codes and went for a long test drive. I'm happy to report no more check engine light.
Thanks for the keeping things simple and getting good camera shots of the important stuff.
Thanks bro! 👍🏾 Doing mine soon, I’ll let you know the results. Going to get the exact fitting tho 😅
I have to change mine out as well, 00 ex very helpful video thanks 👍
Thanks bro I really appreciate your content makes it really easy to do after I've already seen you do it! 👍
Question. . My cat got stolen recently as my car got broken into. They took the cat and the o2 sensor and pulled off the plug the O2 sensor latches to. Can you let me know what the the cable the O2 sensor attaches to is called / part number?
very clear and helpful, thanks for the video
Thanks...this helps...i couldn't find it👍
Just to confirm in my 98 ex the catalytic converters is after the downpipe
I have a, 00 Civic Ex and it only has a downstream?
Is that normal or should it have a upstream to?
One is near the CV Axle and Oil Pan
The second one is screwed onto the Catalytic Converter
Need more help, reply with your email
@@angelisone I need help as well finding the connector for my upstream right before my cat can we exchange #?
@@DADDY-mj7hb It's really confusing when someone decided to call downstream & upstream.
Yours is connected close to the engine while the other is connected on center of the catalytic converter.
If you are under the car, look up in center of CV axle-high up & you will see the O2's plug.
Information is based on 2000 Honda Civic EX (5 speed).
O2 cable (has ATG's rubber cap) is much longer on the catalytic converter w/cable feed into the passenger side.
Good luck on try to remove the O2 on catalytic converter. I used the ATG socket to remove the O2.
Look at this O2 Sensor (2:40). The cable (short respect to one on catalytic converter) has a hold down clips and cable goes straight up (based being under the car) to end with a plug. Becareful to pinch and pull out cable.
It is best to disconnect the plug before removing the O2 sensor.
If O2 sensor on catalytic converter (rattling) is bad. ATG & I recommend to replace both cat & O2.
How in the world were you able to get two hands on the electrical connector?
Thanks man!
I don’t understand where the upstream connector right before the catalytic converter ? Can anyone help me out locating it?
How do take out the elec connector from the downstream sensor
You need to go back into the car to remove the mat.
Reply with email if you need more help
Wait, so what's the sensor you point out at the start of the video? On the manifold? I had the same p0135 code and got a bank 1 sensor and stuck it in the manifold spot 😂 it runs way better but still have a CEL for the code
I have the same issue.no drivability problems just a light.is it the same for a 98 hx model??
I replaced both those on my 99 civic Ex and cleared the codes over and over, eventually had limp mode happen and turned out I had a busted ECU. Replaced the ECU and it runs like new. However after the second start the next day the P0135 is back. Again I changed both O2 sensors, one under the car like yours and the one on top of the catalytic converter. I am not sure what to do now. DEQ in Oregon will not allow it to be registered because of the code.
Where is the serial number of the converter located for the model
@@harry8201 I am not sure. I can look and see what I find out.
Any clue where the upstream connector is?? I have a 99 ex but I see it nowhere before my cat
Where is the converter serial number located
Are Honda o2's heated sensors ? Primary and Secondary .. I have a 2000 4cyl accord
Thanks in advance !
Yes they are
@@JackofAllMasterofNone
Sorry I meant , do they stay heated 100% of the time or is it only on warm up. I would think that once the water temp comes up to 189 , the ECU would turn off the o2 heaters..
Thanks
@@JackofAllMasterofNone i have a question i have a honda civic ex 1998 4 door automati and also i have the same code just now but mine has one on the header? Will it be the secondary at the bottom or on top
I have same car where is my up sream sensor?
Metro Tmobile he literally doing it in the video. If you watched it..
Morning time when i start my car rpm stable on 1500 and check light on. Then i turn off my car put sensor clip out and then put in ..after that rpm stable on 1000 and engine light turn off..
Dont know whats the matter is
Austin Martin maybe it was dirty?
this is half the job 😢
That's not a vtec engine. I own a 98 with 107 thousand & I own 2000 with 75 thousand thay are bothe the D16y7 engine not vtec.
What? Its a vtec engine.
Bro 99 ex is vtec
D16y8
Well let's say is v Tec single cam
@@Jr-sw6ziIts a D16Y8 vtec
A wrench wouldn’t work ? Instead of 02 socket ?
Try ATG Crowfoot. Many times the O2 sensors are seized up. So you might have to replaced both.
thank you for posting this, i have been looking for the sensor on my 1999 civic ex and probably would not have found it without this
Isn't the downstream on the exhaust manifold?
No
Everything great but Bosh is garbage the right one is denso
Yeah I usually agree but on my $600 Civic the right one is the cheaper, easier to get one.
