  • Dan faces extreme cold, trespassers, and small game hunters. Will he get his archery buck in Wisconsin? Or will his bow tag go unfilled.

So glad Dan posts these videos.....I thought the pheasant hunter was just ignoring the "Howdy".....just to be an a-hole.....but he wasn't. I will handle my next bump exactly the same way.....If they turn into an asshole after hearing a howdy, then it's on them. The woods is a shared resource........don't crawl into a hole.

Obviously it can be very disheartening in bublic grounds with all the activities and disturbances but also rewarding when you can capitalize on a biggen.

I swear he saw you. How did he not hear you?
Also, it sounds stupid, but I might have sat there until closing time after he walked through, I've seen mature bucks come out after intrusions like that. I might have climbed down and drove around scouting like you did though, just depends on my gut feeling. The drive by scouting was probably more productive this time.
Public land gets pretty tough this time of year. When you do get on them though, you're usually into most of them.

Stopped watching deer killing videos over 25 years ago
I call them "killing videos" because it occurred to me at that time 95% of all deer videos were being filmed on larger tracts of intensely managed private ground hunted by a very select and VERY small number of hunters and those bucks were exposed to essentially no human or hunting pressure and were being observed by so many trail cams while also coming to large well maintained food plots it IMO was more killing than actual hunting and such hunts had absolutely nothing at all in common with how 90% of deer hunters hunt.
All those types of hunts did was show you how those who were blessed with that good of deer hunting have it vs those of us who don't and I in no way begrudge such people and I wish them well but such videos have absolutely zero educational merit or value and are again IMO for purposes of entertainment only.
You Dan hunt like 90% of deer hunters hunt public land deer that experience massive hunting pressure
I hold you in the utmost of respect and consider your hunting advice as having no superior and damn few equals

I’m on a monster hunting exits from a bedding area to a bean field still standing on public. 1st huntable day after the bomb cyclone that went through the Midwest. In the distance on the north end of the bean field blaze orange muzzleloader hunter. Wind blowing into field. Really dude. Ok, maybe they will still come past me. They did. Nice 140 class 8pt follows a doe and 2 fawns into field. Doe fawn probably coming into esterous. Wrong move buck. I watch hunter raise gun with much movement. Wait for it! Blam!! Dead buck. Dumb ass. 15 minutes until dark. Who knows what may have come past me. ? I get down help him drag it out, congrats and Merry Christmas. I’ll try again tomorrow. One less guy on public I guess. Hopefully the giant didn’t catch that act. 👍

Yep, very frustrating to say the least! The public lands I've been hunting are now getting overrun with Mnt bikers! They are like a plague! Once the trails are in, then come all the rest! Hikers, joggers, and the dog walkers are the worst! People are moving here to the Black Hills in droves ever since covid!
I use to be able to draw a hills rifle buck tag every other year, and now it's about 3-4 years. Back in the 90's I remember getting one at hardware store. Archery numbers have been increasing yearly as well, how long before that goes to a drawing?
Even with all the increasing human pressure, I killed my two biggest archery bucks the last two seasons, but just like Dan said, you gotta stick with it til the end! I've had tag soup more times than tagged a mature buck, but then I'm very picky.
