Not gonna lie it took me a little bit to come around to Dan's videos because I was used to the high production hunting videos. I finally realized though, that those videos are just eye candy with no substance. Each video I watch of Dan's, I walk away learning something. Now I can't get enough of these videos and feel like I'm going to be able to read deer so much better than I ever have been able to. Thanks for the great content!
Me and you both brother!! Don’t get me wrong. It’s nice watching all the big name guys shoot 200” deer but they are nothing more than a product pusher. Name brand this and name brand that, gotta have this or gotta have that to kill deer like this and on and on. Truth is those guys would do terribly at public hunting.

“Even though the outcome was horrible, the experience taught me a lot.” This is not only an incredible mindset for hunting but an incredible mindset for LIFE as well. Last year I forced myself to learn to hunt off the ground. I bumped deer, had missed opportunities, and ate my Texas and Oklahoma tags. But I wouldn’t change anything about it or do anything different even if I had the choice because I learned so much in the process.
I felt the emotions of that hunt!!! When you said you spined that twelve point I was screaming at my phone to put another one in him lol

I believe he has been trying to take care of himself better after a good friend of his passed from cancer. one of his videos he talked about it and unloaded a pistol on a box of doughnuts and a monster energy.

John Eberhart is doing deer stories like this on his yt channel. Could listen to both these guys telling hunting stories all day long. Very interesting to listen to these stories 👍
Funny part is between John and Dan they are polar opposite’s when it comes to hunting styles and they both shoot monsters

Eberhart tries to hard to sound like he knows too much. Dan, to me, is just an everyday blue collar hunter who learns as much as he can from his experiences, hunts hard and a lot, and passes what he has learned on.
@@jchris3841 they both have quite different characters but I believe both are speaking with truth and conviction. Since they’re humans they’re not perfect but I see a great quality in both as they explain how they achieved success through lessons learned from their own failures. Both are upstanding quality human beings imo. I will even go to say theirs patriarchs if the hunting industry. 👍

Serial Killer, after watching this video in July, I scouted a local oxbow on a creek. Instantly found buck beds and fresh poop. I put out a camera on the outskirts of the bedding and there was nothing but bucks. Today (15 Aug) is opening day. Dropped a nice 7 in velvet walking out of oxbow bedding. Thanks Dan.
Thank you for posting your video. Your failure on that hunting trip was a huge learning experience and a learning experience for everyone who watched this video. Thanks again for sharing. I’ve been hunting deer for 35 years and I’ve probably learned more more in the past 5 years than I did in the first 30. It seems that way anyway.

Great story Dan, as usual. I spined one once. He did same thing. As I lowered my Crossbow, he jumped up from the dead and bounded off in a wobbly fashion. An hour later we tracked him in the dark and found him bedded under some thick Honeysuckle. It took 2 more Bolts to end his struggle. Small 8 pointer by your standards.
The rock is something you should contact a archeological outfit on. It would be a great follow up to hear about in a future vedio of yours. And it would be cost free.

I love hearing the old stories. Some of my favorite moments are the times I've spent with my dad telling old deer stories. The giants that get away seem to always be the stories that are the most memorable. I appreciate the humility and unselfishness you have to share instances where you made mistakes so that others can learn from them.
What great story, Dan. I've been hooked on oxbow in the swamp for some time...especially those 'S' curves where a guy can cover two at the same time. Amazing hunts.

Yes! Love this! We sit around deer camp, look at topo maps think about these elements (really all year as we plan our stand locations) that influence deer activity. It’s the best at the end of a nice all day sit, while we play guitar, drink beer and eat a nice dinner!

If you know anything about hunting, you can understand the amount of things you can learn and take away from one of dan’s videos. Thanks for what you are doing Dan it’s made me a much better hunter. Just glad someone does it for us and not the lights and camera.
I've definitely noticed in my own experience that what Dan is saying is right on (30:00 mark) about the wind blowing into the oxbow.
One thing that I would add is most of the big buck bedding areas that I have found that are by a water source, I have to hunt during an east wind (which is the least common wind direction).
It just goes to show how smart these older bucks are.
Has anyone else noticed this?

these are the kinds of tales that teach other hunters how to deal with difficult situations. Not necessarily difficult situations with the game, but with people and how they like to talk. Mr. Infalt's dropping dimes yet again.

Dan i have found a few rocks like that at my house in Michigan. I thought they were made by the indians with stick and sand for years. I finally found out they are a type of rock formed naturally over millions of years. Called Omar stones, or Omarolluk stones.

I really enjoyed the podcast yesterday with Josh,Aron,and Dan. Scout scout scout and hunt will be my 2022 season plan. I have very limited time to get it done each season due to work but after last year it can only get better 2021 sucked
I've learned now to always put a kill shot on a deer if given a 2nd opportunity. Me and buddies have had to many jump back up never to be seen again. Hard lessons learned! Good info Dan!

After i watched this video i tol myself thats the same type of setup i never went into in the northern kettle moraine in wisconsin..so i said get in there just to satisy your curiosity.i waded the river and hopped out at every oxbow to check it out.i never heard so much commotion when i kicked all these deer out that were hugging the river in those oxbows..that was 2 months ago. Its settled down enough now and ive got two stands setup for different winds over the oxbows..thanks for the video cuz im pretty sure im gonna be sayin..." I got me another one" SOON!

It has to be a tool of some kind Dan. The straight scrapes going through is what sold me. Water can do alot of neat things with time but I think this one is man made.
That was interesting enough to keep an eye out on oxbows !! ... And one hell of a story. You had to be quite busted up after all that excitement.
Wow I had something very similar happen to me. I spined a buck but was too cheap to waste another broadhead and possibly an arrow so I got down and was going to use my knife. So I get to it and it's basically dead (NOT) so I start looking for my tag in my pack and all of a sudden he pops up and runs across a cut field as I watch him running away 400 yards away never finding any blood. That's was a good 20 years ago at least and now I always chootem again lizabeth....great vids,great info thx. Your maps and details help teach at a different level and make it easier to understand.

Hi Dan, great content as usual. An Oxbow is a meander of a river or stream that is separated from the stream. You are talking about an outside bend.
That beast shot in the spine is really something. 1nce they get that adrenaline there hard to stop unless it's the heart or lungs

I would say very possibly could be a Indian artifact. My guess would be it had a handle of some sort attached through the hole and was used a weapon or hammer for some task. The “hammer head” portion looks as if it may have a few chips missing….very interesting

As far as that rock goes, looks like a drill rig hole to me? They ever do any mining or exploratory drilling to look for coal, lead or other minerals around there?
Rock was found in a plowed field on a hill with only miles of farm land around...

I wonder if the hole in the rock is from drilling? sometimes when drilling for a well (water) the drill bites into a rock or two and that would explain the grooves worked into one side.
The rock looks like a Neolithic stone hammerhead which would be pretty awesome
I enjoyed and appreciated the maps showing the deer trails. I was curious though if you have any videos or illustrations on how you would set up in various situations, like in the last one at 28:12?
Have you hunted the side across the river of an oxbow? I had a buck that beds on one and at dusk I heard him jump in the river and make a huge splash, swim across the river and go to an oak that had a huge acorn crop that year. Scared the crap out of me when I heard him splash the first time. He winded me the second time I setup on him from that side. That was two years ago and since then there hasn't been a good acorn crop, so I didn't see any action last year on that side but I think they will use that bed again when the acorns drop, or maybe they still do and just stay on the dry land side.
I have hunted the opposite side cause it makes a good funnel or the deer leave that way. I can't recall seeing them bed the other side, but in the right scenario Im sure they could.
@@thehuntingbeast I worded that wrong. The buck was bedded on the oxbow, but he would exit his bed by crossing the river. I tried to intercept him at dusk but he got me... He was a smart creature
I would say that was a crude hammer of some sort they would shove a piece of wood through the whole for the handle, then tie it off with some primitive cordage

Very good video as always! Just went in today and set up a spot in an oxbow. I have a lot more to do/scout b4 the season gets here on Oct 1st in Michigan. I wonder if these spots should be more reserved for the rut or will they produce all season???

End of the day hell of a story. I actually spine shot my first decent buck. Actually got it self filmed. And I was lucky enough to put another arrow in him. But I had to learn the hard way on an old Doe. At the end of the day we're all human in archery there's a lot of errors. Learn from your mistakes Keep On Keepin On.

Way ahead of your time skipping right over Illinois in it's hay day. I remember when I was about 8 or 9 back in the early 90s and my old man was trying to transfer from Detroit to Peoria Illinois so we could hunt big bucks lol

I've heard bucks will trap a doe in the oxbow as well. Never seen it before but read/heard before
Probably something natural with the rock. Maybe the natives figured out a use for it then with the grooves. We ought to think how could we use it if we didn't have machines to make everything we need! Thanks for the info.
When the buck leaves the oxbow are you expecting them to use the land bridge or go out the back side threw the river
The sign you find will answer that question, but fairly often, maybe "usually" its the dry land bridge they exit thru.

One of the biggest bucks of my life walked 5 yards downwind through thick brush downwind of the main trail . I didn't see the faint trail. Unfortunately MY tree was between them and I hadn't cut THE limb I needed to. I was looking THROUGH my stand at him until he finally caught my wind...😢
Awesome video, i’m not sure about the rock. Banner stones have holes like that but the rock is also shaped…. I’ve never seen anything like that. If it was sitting in the same spot right underneath a place where water would drop for millions of years Itcould do it
An oxbow is technically a lake. It is no longer attached to the river. It is where a former river meander was pinched off. So good info though.
