Nice boat, you got lucky with the seas, we just bought a Cabo 35 that was in Atlantic Highlands New Jersey, and we had to tough out four footers until we got to Cape May. After Cape May we went into the Delaware Bay which was like glass, through the C&D canal, also easy. Then it was smooth sailing in the Chesapeake.
It gives me joy to see you enjoying this adventure with your father. I lost my father in the spring of 2020. I miss doing things with him. Congratulations on your new to you boat.
Sorry to hear that Doug...I lost my mom in '18 and my dad, sister, and I will miss sharing these moments with her forever. Having my dad on that trip was certainly special!! Thanks, we are really looking forward to a full boating season next year!
These videos track my search of 5 years to find the right Chris Craft 381 or 410 Commander. I have seen the listings you were aboard plus a half dozen more. What shocked me was your ability to find 2 listings that were not even on the market, including Thirsty Whale at Skipper Buds. As you may know, the market for boats changed dramatically due to the need for social distancing, a pleasant surprise for the industry. This made your, and my, task exceptionally difficult and time consuming. I am right behind you, brother, and may have news of my own purchase soon.
That is fantastic to hear! I've already fallen head-over heels for my 381, and I know you'll love yours when you land it! It is a CRAZY market these days...
Idle speed is 4-5kts...pretty quick with the big props. I can't leave it in gear in or around marina's. Cruise speed all depends on what you want. My favorite is a slow cruise 8-10kts, but she'll do 20-25kts easily...if you wanna burn the gas to get somewhere quick.
Thanks Joe!! We've been up in Door County for 3 boating seasons, and 10 years overall for all seasons visits and vacations. We absolutely love it up there!
I had a 1984 381 here in San Diego. My you are burning up the fuel at 20 knots. I was ocean cruising though never that fast just once in a while in the bay just to check systems and temp.. Enjoy
Oh yeah...cruising at that speed is reserved for crossing the lake or the bay. We don't use that kinda gas on joy rides! LOL I love cruising along at 8-10kts. Much more relaxing.
20 was my typical cruise speed when going somewhere, and that trip was as long as I would push it at 6 1/2 hours. At that speed, 150 miles was the comfortable range.
Love this video! Thanks for sharing your anxiety on the first docking - That will be me in late April when we bring our 33 express across the Chesapeake to its new home. Our previous boat was a 19 foot deck boat so I'm feeling out of my league. Any advice?
This day was a VERY special day for me, having my dad make the trip with me. My advice would be to just take EVERYTHING SLOOOOOOW. As slow as you can while maintaining control. Wind is always the biggest variable, but currents play a part too. During this first docking, my anxiety was through the roof, but I had to do my best to set that aside, read the wind, know the current (very little where I'm at), and concentrate on what I was doing. Once I was in...I let it ALL go, and it was then that I let myself realize what I had just done and felt good about how I handled it. SLOW as possible...no faster than you're willing to hit anything. :o)
I would do a little slow maneuvering and drifting near your marina before docking (exactly what I did prior to coming in that first time), just to see what the wind is going to do to your boat. The freeboard on your Chris-Craft is MUCH higher than your deck boat, so you'll want to know how much the wind is going to push you around.
@@WiscoBoater Good point about the wind. I definitely plan on taking it very slow and practicing maneuvering a bunch before I go for it. It will probably be a Saturday with plenty of onlookers. I might need to make sure we have our own dock hands there for us as we don't know a soul at the marina yet. The owner is super nice and if she's there I know she'll help out. Might be just my wife and me on board. I'll definitely shoot some video. Thanks for the encouragement.
Great video...congrats! I spend too much time these days daydreaming of my first CC yacht. Great job docking...your hands were working fast. What did you think of the cruising speed of the 381? Slow? Just right? You anticipated 7-8hrs time to Sturgeon Bay but came in at just over 6hrs.
Thank you! It was nerve-wracking, but I'll get the hang of it. Planning to take it off the dock this weekend. Cruising speed for our normal usage will be on the slow side, 10-12kts, but the trip was planned at 16kts based on what I was seeing for seas...none of that happened as it was almost glass-smooth the entire way, so I pushed it to 20kts to get there faster. Rock solid in cruise at anything between 10-25kts. Even slow speed handling is nice because of the full hull keel.
Thank you! I burned 40gph total on the trip from Racine to Sturgeon bay running 20kts in smooth water. Burned about 250 gallons. We won't normally cruise that fast, but I wanted to get that trip done quick since the conditions were perfect. I've only trawled a bit since then, so I can't give a real accurate slower speed fuel burn. Good luck with your purchase!
Hey Jim! For that trip, I set the cruise at 20kts, 3200rpm, and was burning 40gph...I typically won't cruise that fast, but it was a long trip and the conditions were so good.
@@chipt8528 Hi Chip, I don't get over 4k with mine either. The WOT range on my engines (Merc 340 MEI's) is 3800-4200, and I get 3950. My props are 22 x 25
Awesome boat!❤
Way to go buds!
Enjoyed it very much. You put her in the slip like you had done it 10000 times before. I am impressed.
Great video! Nice job on the docking. Congrats on the new vessel and way to go sharing that inaugural run with your "Pops"!
What a nice boat. Wish I had one in that shape
Way to go Chaddly! Congrats and welcome home. Menominee isn’t that far away……just say’n. 👍🏻😎
Thanks Jeff!! We'll be over next year for sure! I need to get comfortable with it around Sturgeon Bay first, but we'll be there!
What a great video! You did great on your first trip. Can't wait for more!

Very nice, skipper! At 38' long and a beam of 14' it's like driving a little condo around. You did real good : ) Congrats on your new vessel.
@T. Fridley Thank you very much! It'll take come getting used to coming from a single engine Regal...but I think easier when I get the hang of it.
Nice boat. Had to be an exciting day. 👍
Great job! You sure had a perfect day!
New subscriber...looking forward to more vids!!
Nice ole Chris..
Thanks Larry! Welcome to the Wisco Boater channel!
Nice job docking!

Thanks Travis!! Glad you are enjoying the videos!
@@WiscoBoater Hopefully you can still squeeze in a cruise before the year is out.
Good job Captain! Now I want a 381!
Thank You
Congrats
Great video. Im looking at the same kind of boat. Have you noticed what the idle speed is? and i assume cruise speed is 12 knots?
Thanks

Found your channel a few days ago and watching older videos.
How long will that fuel last you just normal cruising?

did you ever figure out what you average for fuel consumption? how many miles for the tanks?
Didn't have a chance to take any trips in 2021...hopefully this year!
How much fuel does it burn? Just put an offer on an 1986! Beautiful boy you have!

can i ask what you paid for it? looking at one same year trying to see if it's price is similar.
Hi John, I paid $44k for Thirsty Whale.
She be beautiful! At what speed are you cruising and what is the rpm on each engin?

I haven't gotten over 4k, clean bottom. I believe my props are 22x22.
