    After seeing the perspective of the Eldians in the internment camp we feel bad with what Eren just did. But like he said, in his eyes they were the bad guys and he accepted Reiner for what he believed in. So what Eren is likely doing is not about revenge because Willy just declared war and Eren had his twitter feed ready.

    The conversation between reiner and eren is so interesting, he's basically saying he understands why they did what they did, he gets that they were brainwashed children and had little to no choice in it, he admits its not all black and white like he thought before, however he also has people he needs to protect, things that were "forced" upon him, and he HAS to keep pushing forward, just like they did 9 years ago. They're the same. And that is depressing af just a cicle that never ends.

While Eren (the attack titan) is a sword but was forced to be a shield. Now in season 4 they are back in there natural positions.

  • @HarJBeRw
    @HarJBeRw 3 года назад +42

    Just a couple clarifications about several misunderstandings you had about character motivations:
    - Eren didn't come to Marley to take revenge on Reiner and the Marleyans. That's the point of the talk he has with Reiner. He now understands the position Reiner was in and the prejudice Marleyans hold regarding Eldians. He doesn't seek revengebut recognizes that the threat facing Paradis because of Marley remains real and existential, and to "save the world", he is choosing to do what he sees as necessary to save his people.
    - King Fritz didn't have a plan for saving the Eldians by retreating to Paradis, he believed the crimes of the Eldian empire were too great to be absolved and only desired to enjoy a brief peace within the walls before his people were inevitably exterminated by the rest of the world. There was no need to "erase everyone's memories every 20 years" because, again, he wasn't aiming for the long-term survival of the people of Paradis. He saw their very existence as titan-shifters as the root cause of evil and accepted the need for their extermination. He just didn't want to witness it himself apparently.
    - The Tyburs didn't sell the Eldians off to Marley in order to acquire a life of luxury. What happened to the Eldians outside Paradis was foreseen by both King Fritz and the Tybursas they were aware of the hate the world held for them. The high-status of the Tyburs was merely a result of their place within the story of Helios they fabricated along with King Fritz. As Willy said in ep3, the Tyburs provided Marley, supposedly the nation most oppressed by the Eldian Empire, with the power of the titans in an effort to turn around what had been done to them. Obviously that failed miserably, as Magath pointed outlast episode, as that only caused Marley to turn around and do the same thing the Eldian empire supposedly did
    edit: also... yea the things you discussed about the Attack Titan powers have definitelynot been covered in S4P1, and being an anime-only, I'm pretty certain that's not something we're supposed to have gathered from the story thus far... I suspect that might have been manga spoilers. I hope not cuz that would suck for you guys, me, and all the other anim-onlys who watched the commentary section. Not your fault obviously, but yea

      @subarusama5673 3 года назад +1

      I'm glad that I've made the correct choice of reading the manga just after finishing S3P2 in late 2019 to be immune to spoilers. :)
      I won't confirm nor deny this information provided in the comments, but I'm just going to point out that seeing into the future happened with Eren before he had any titan powers... Remember S1E1? Seeing into the past is nothing new, any titan shifter can do it, no?
      King Fritz was really selfish and a shitty king. Eren Kruger was right in this aspect and vow to renounce war was the thing that killed so many of his kin on Paradis... I'm not even going to mention what that meant for Eldians outside Paradis... :(

    NO SPOILERS: The 9 titans belonged to Noble families who would often fight amongst each other for land and power. It's not said how the Great Titan war started but it did happen. King Karl Frits the 145th king of Eldia was sick of all the violence. He wanted peace so the Fritz and Tybur family came together and made a story about Helos. Karl Fritz took many of his people to Paradis island (we know why he calls it Paradis now. "Give us a brief paradise"). King Karl Fritz believes the only way to peace is by oppressing Eldians around the world and taking a few loyal followers behind the walls on Paradis. This "peace" worked for close to 107 years until Reiner and Bertholdt attacked Shiganshina. Grisha panicked and ran straight to the Reiss (Fritz) family to get the founding titan to fight back against Marley. Freida Reiss was taken over by her ancestors (King Karl Fritz) will to not fight. Grisha had no choice but to dethrone the royal family and usurp the power for himself. He didn't have much time left so he passed it on to Eren hoping his son could master the power to save everyone.

My theory is they hunted down the other titan families and gave the 6 titan shifters to Marleyan “warriors” or Eldians who were loyal to Marley. The Attack Titan somehow managed to escape the grasp of Marley and the Tyburs and King Fritz made a deal with the Tyburs and moves to Paradis. I think the Tybur family guards were Eldians too who remained loyal to the Tybur family.

      @@xCwieCHRISx I don’t think the founding titan had complete control over the other 8 titans but it’s never a smart move for the king to go against powerful noble families with armies and titan powers. As we saw in AoT if they were to revolt they could overthrow the king and steal his titan too. Similar to politics in our world yes the King is the most powerful but he wouldn’t go after his generals, advisors, politicians and aristocrats for no reason as that could lead to his downfall.

      I think the Attack Titan stayed loyal to that side of the royal family and they all went in to hiding. I doubt the Tyburs would have allowed them to survive otherwise. I think the Tybur family captured the other 6 Titans and handed them over to Marley. Which would have been a massacre of many Titan families. Also I think the Tybur Family Guards are Eldians who remained loyal to the Tyburs. I hope they make a spin off series of the great titan war and the down fall of the Eldian empire. As long as this show ends well. Fingers crossed

    Eden does care that Reiner feels bad and he didn't want to attack because there was good people there too but once Willy declared war he knew they weren't going to consider peace and that's why he attacked. That's also why he waited to till the end of Willy's speech and didn't attack right away, to see if they were going to consider peace but because they didn't Eren knew there was always going to be casualties and attacked to protect the people of paradise.

    to explain the opening scene a bit more: the man who hung himself did so out of guilt because when he saw titans in his village he ran away alone and left behind his three children. The stranger's regret haunts Bert (his nightmares and sleep positions) and he relates to the man's desire to be judged by someone else, instead of having to define his sins himself. Annie believed the man just wanted to be forgiven by someone, and Reiner is finally receiving his moment to be judged. Hope that helps!
    Anyways, this episode is incredible. The music and visuals during the play gives me chills. The conversation between Eren and Reiner is so full of insight into both of their characters and how similar they are. Then at the end I can't help but watch in terror as Eren does what Reiner did before him and history repeats itself.

He understands both sides but still has to do what has to be done. I don’t believe he feels any resentment or anger towards Reiner. That’s why he says “You had no choice. You were saving the world” or something along these lines.

    What I love about this was that Eren knew he had to understand the people before being able to do what he did there. He had to even the playing ground between him and Reiner because without that he would be no more than a mindless titan attacking a wall. He chose to put himself through the realization that the people in Marley are no different than his own. Even after his talk with Reiner and hearing Willy have similar convictions to himself, he had to keep moving forward the same way Reiner did.

    The point Eren was making in this is that for him it is in fact not even about revenge anymore. Yes revenge was his biggest motivation throughout the show, revenge on the titans but ever since he got access to the titans memories he realized that the only thing revenge causes is the cycle of hatred to repeat itself over and over again. We dont know what Eren knows and how much context he has when it comes to the founding titans origin and the cycle of hatred that has been in motion since Ymir gained her powers but it is safe to say that whatever context Eren has is enough to turn this hot headed hatred filled young kid into a cold blooded murderer.
    Reiners situation is different in the sense that yes he was in fact indoctrinated as a child soldier to believe he was gonna be the hero who will save the world from the devils of Paradise but at the same time, what he said at the very end of this conversation really explains why he feels such an overwhelming guilt for his sins. It WAS NOT just indoctrination that kept him moving forward, it was his very own selfish desire to be seen as the hero and gain respect and recognition from the world that truly led him to continue their mission despite Annie and Bert calling it quits. He felt guilty for having Marcels life taken instead of his. That led him to inherit Marcels personality as the strong charicmatic leader hoping that would get the job done which caused his scizophrenia.
    Ultimately, while Eren is fighting to try and end the cycle of hatred, seeing another hell/maybe hope behind the hell they live in right now, Reiner was fighting for selfish reasons mainly. Desperately attempting to free himself from his immense guilt by blindly following the mission instead of giving reason and compassion a chance to win him over.

      From what we know, Erens intentions during the attack on Liberio are less selfish than Reiners initial intentions during S1-S2
