    One of the best moments was when Zeke was talking to Armin in the Paths. When he saw the baseball and remembered the times he had playing catch he realized the meaning of life-that there is no meaning. That life can be pointless, and is subjective to you. It doesn’t have to be grand or even meaningful. As long as its meaningful to YOU. He was finally at peace. That said a lot about his character, I think.

    • @Asterite100
      @Asterite100 7 месяцев назад +125

      That's kind of what I enjoyed about the scene as well, though I did not appreciate how... simple-minded Zeke was when it came to philosophy.
      I can't tell you how much it gets under my skin when knuckle-draggers wax poetic about how life is all about procreation and survival, nothing more. It's like, 3rd-grade level understanding of circle of life, but many adults deadass believe such tripe.
      Life is what you make of it, plain and simple (though your choices can carry consequences).

    • @ryanrzjr
      @ryanrzjr 7 месяцев назад +46

      It was extremely great for both characters. Zeke had looked at the conflict from a purely analytical perspective without an appreciation for life. Zeke realizes that despite what’s sensible, he would’ve been happy playing catch forever. That’s what he wanted.

    • @drx696
      @drx696 7 месяцев назад +92

      I think Zeke just realized , it’s the simple things in life that mattered the most . He’d rather play catch with the professor rather then do the whole agenda he’d been planning for along time with the euthinization plan. Compassion really mattered in the end for zeke and it’s cool he took one for the team to stop the rumbling .

    The transition between season 3 and 4 is still one of the most incredible re-contextualizations of a setting I’ve ever seen, it completely transformed the show in such a masterful and horrifying way.

    • @paulcoffield2102
      @paulcoffield2102 7 месяцев назад +83

      ... and yet people still call Season 3 the best of the series. I thought it was an interesting idea to go in a different direction and show the perspective of the people that were persecuting the Paradisians to show that the world wasn't painted in shades of black and white.

    • @gileee
      @gileee 6 месяцев назад +25

      Charlie keeps going on how he doesn't understand why people dislike the ending, and he goes on to assume it's because the wanted a happy ending for some reason. But the people I saw complaining didn't like the anime going from "ok, this is ODM gear, this is how it works, but it still won't save you from a 15m class or an aberrant" horror show to international war crimes political drama with even the weakest characters being absolute titan annihilators with their actions, motivation and sometimes entire plot points not making any sense with what was established previously.

    • @crusader_wolf1104
      @crusader_wolf1104 6 месяцев назад +87

      @@gileee
      That’s understandable, the shift between season 3 and 4 is almost like watching an entirely different series. I personally enjoyed season 4 the most since not only were the visuals and animations amazing, we start to see titans and odm gear as being small pieces to the overall painting and not so much apart of the main focal point anymore. Humans are ultimately just as, if not more, horrifying than titans are as we always find ourselves in a cycle of violence and war, and unlike titans we are in control of our conscious while we try to kill each other.

    • @dawoodkarim1227
      @dawoodkarim1227 6 месяцев назад +15

      @@gileee I get that completely but listen man at the end of the day you have got to give a piece of fiction some leeway. Were it to absolutely stick to those standards there's no way to have achieved anything even close to this ending, which is the ending isayama had foreseen from the very beginning.

    • @jdg2198
      @jdg2198 6 месяцев назад +14

      @@dawoodkarim1227i don't even think it needs leeway. They were cadets in a military branch, that never saw combat with other people, let alone titans, and when they EACH needed to become efficient killers, they did. I believe the show purposefully made the stakes high to the point of horror, so that the main cast could be presented as kids who could not fathom the changes of the world they would be a part of. The idea that there was no organic progression between seasons, i think stems from the show taking so long to release them.

    I think one really important thing that also got overlooked is Eren’s mental state, not just on the surface, but much deeper. People keep saying why did Eren do this or why did he not do that, and it doesn’t make any sense. To understand his actions, not only do we need to consider Yimr’s influence but also Eren’s thought process. From the moment he touches Historia, his mind begins being torn apart by memories from 2000 years pain and anguish. Both the future and the past coexisting in an endless cycle inside his mind. Reality, and what is important to him, becomes skewed. He sees that no matter if people fight or die, war and suffering never truly ends. (As shown in the ending when civilization advances and war continues) The only thing Eren can be sure of at this point, is the future that he can see. In this future, there is hope for Mikasa to grow old, and she does. Perhaps he decides that if the suffering and war will never truly end, at least he can give his friends a chance of temporary peace. In all his confusion, one thing that would have at least made sense was him mindlessly following the path of the future, the path that he believed was already set and unavoidable anyway. So, I think Eren did what he did because it was easier for him in a way and because, in his mind, it was a better chance for his friends to have some form of peace. And I think that’s exactly what Yimr wanted. Eren’s story is a tragedy and he is a truly broken mind.

      !(sort of spoiler alert for those who haven't watched it)! I didn't have trouble with spoilers for this final movie but an hour before it was released on crunchyroll, I went to watch the final trailer on RUclips and the 2nd video that came up was literally "Attack on Titan Finale Scene, Mikasas death" (the episode was released at different times in different places) I pretty much had a panic attack, (not because of the death itself) but because i could stop myself from subconsiously thinking too much into it and creating potential endings off that info.
      I finish the movie and it was hardly a spoiler, it was a great scene but the death didn't affect the entire episode like I thought. I was walking about thinking " so mikasas dies so does this mean just Eren actually doesnt care about her and just wins kills everyone and I already know what's gonna happen" but the ending was much more complex and amazing. It still put me in a horrible mood counting the minutes until the release.🤣

    What I find significant of the ending is we see a slice of their world. It is neither the beginning of peace nor the end of suffering. It merely ends how humanity always has been in that world: in conflict. I think people were hoping for it to be decisively good or bad, but that's not the show's message. The show illustrates how the lines between "good" and "evil" are blurred, but we find meaning in the smaller things: love, friends, hopes for tomorrow, or just throwing a ball or racing with friends. It shows the world is messy and awful at times, and there is no solution to solve this. But despite that, we can find joy and still long for a better tomorrow.

    • @Anonymous4045
      @Anonymous4045 5 месяцев назад +5

      Another aspect of the show in general I enjoyed was how the show gradually made you think more and more as it goes on. The first season, it's purely black and white: Eren's mom is dead from the titans, along with countless others, so they must fight to defeat them. Then the next season shows a bit more nuance, as the enemy shifts to other people trying to stop Eren. The viewer should still be on the side of the scouts. However, season 3 really does require more critical thinking. The viewer realizes even the loathed enemies have their own justifications for doing this. After Eren's first attack on civilians, it becomes clear that things aren't black and white.

    Gotta remember that Eren didn't start the rumbling to protect his friends, he GENUINELY wanted to flatten the earth. It's been stated many times by him, when he was talking to ramzi and himself in the latest ep. Why you may ask? Because he believes that ANYONE outside of the walls "stole" his dream/freedom by simply existing. He wanted to explore places with his friends after defeating the titans, so he's quite literally throwing a tantrum due to other peoples existence, and I actually enjoy that. It makes sense why Eren calls himself an idiot, he genuinely is a kid fueled by hatred who got gifted godlike power. There's a bit of plotholes in the ending still, but it's still much better than people give it credit for. The fixing of certain lines between the Armin and Eren scene is probably the best change.

In that sense he’s still a sane grounded character. Him apologizing to that kid before committing the rumbling is all the proof you need. He just decided he cared more about his friends than the rest of the world.

    That "alternate timeline", in my opinion, is actually just a vision Eren shows Mikasa, because he didn't want her last memory of him to be him insulting and hurting her, instead a sweet moment they share together. The fact that I started this anime when it first came out I was only 15 and now I’m 25. It’s so crazy how much this show means to me. I’ve rewatched it so many times to see others reactions and I was always so happy and almost proud to see people enjoy it and actually be speechless with how amazing the anime was by just the first episode. This show has literally made me feel so many different emotions while watching the episodes. Giving me core scenes from each season that were ingrained into my memory because they were that impactful. Attack on Titan is truly one of the best stories ever made and I’m so happy that I got to experience this show from episode 1. This show will always hold a special place in my heart and I can’t wait to get my tattoo dedicated to it. I can’t believe a show I’ve followed for 10 years has finally come to a close.

      @@deanward6001It wasn't the sole choice. Eren, possessing the Founding Titan's power, had the potential to secure peace or pursue alternative paths beyond genocide. But his character was instead predetermined from birth. A more rational approach could have involved Eren using his powers against only Marley, then the alliance stepping in as Marley became weakened. Eldia could have risen as a new superpower, and THEN eren could have ended the Titan curse forever, thus creating a nation-to-nation conflict similar to "Youjo Senki." Paradis Island could still be subjected to a devastating outcome later in the future, therefore showing perpetual human conflict a lot more subtly; what we instead got was a bootleg Code Geass. He sacrifised the peace of future generations, traumatized his friends, and destroyed the hope of diplomacy without hatred or prejudice of paradis eldians forever, then he cried that he was just an idiot. People used to come up with some of the wildest theories and there was this one guy on the manga helper website who actually theorized that Reiner was the Armoured Titan in 2012, even before the chapter came out in the manga. Those were some good times.
    The anime adapts the manga so well, when the manga ended 2 years ago there was a backlash, I'll be honest there were some missing points, but I generally liked the ending as to me that was the only logical conclusion to this epic story, but now with the way it was adapted in the anime, I honestly don't have any doubts. It's a fuckin masterpiece.
    Like Charlie here Code Geass was a favorite of mine for a very long time, but this final episode has changed all that for me.

I love how graphic and brutal it was upon my first viewing I never seen anything like it. It seem like B list characters was just dying left and right which got me involved emotionally. I also had questions that I needed answer like "What are the titans?" "Why do they eat people?" "Where do they come from?" "Why is humanity inside these great big walls?" So many questions.
      All most people could do is speculate at the many questions we had at that time. These unanswered questions is what kept me hooked to AOT also the animation was top tier and the story was complex my curiosity and interests in AOT was at a all time high.

    Reason people didn't like it in the manga (SPOILERS):
    - Armin and Eren's conversation was more lackluster. Anime improved on it immensely. In the manga he just mentioned that 80% would be destroyed and pretty much just that. Armin thanks him for what he tried to do, and that he wouldn't let the failure go to waste.
    - People didn't like Ymir's stockholm syndrome and parallels to Mikasa.
    - On release, there were less panels including that were added later in the volume release (mainly the bombing of paradis in the future).
    - People didn't like Eren's breakdown over Mikasa. They felt it was out of character that he would break down over that, rather than over the genocide. They thought while him breaking down is in character, it's the reason why was an issue to them.
    These are the main reasons for peoples dislike. The other criticisms are just screaming that Eren didn't complete the rumbling and lost.
    As someone who disliked how it ended in the manga, the anime greatly improved on it overall. People complaining about it are just those who can't get over the fact that not getting the ending you want does not make it objectively bad.

    • @walmartnibba4726
      @walmartnibba4726 7 месяцев назад +28

      @@kabirarya5381 its not really stockholm syndrome, or at least its not displayed how that actually works. Firstly yes, people do not like how Ymir basically picked Mikasa because she parallels herself, Mikasa was a far deeper character than Ymir and was not a puppet to Eren, so the parallel doesnt really make sense. And remember it was said at the end that Ymir loved Fritz, so it wasnt completely Stockholm syndrome, it was specially said that he in fact, loved him, yet we never saw why. Secondly Fritzs death basically being retconned, it leaves many questions open about Ymir and her feelings. Remember that the reason titans live 13 years is that Ymir died for Fritz after 13 years of having her powers. Well the short scene where it shows Fritz dead and Ymir with her kids just doesnt make sense, her kids ate her at the command of Fritz and thats how the shifting powers got passed down. Lastly is the main problem people have is the message it tires to leave in regards to Mikasa's relationship to Eren and Yamirs relationship to Fritz. Initially we were told Ymirs past with Fritz started with hatred, and how that lead to war, and how that cycle continues up until Mikasa kills Eren. Well it changes that into it being about her love for Fritz and that doesnt really make sense in the context of what we knew, it felt more like it forcefully trying to make a parallel between her and Mikasa. (sidenote but it also really sucked that Eren and Mikasa never got to confess their feelings to each other, it was understood, but never said)

    One thing I noticed on a recent watch through was back when he first met pixis and walked on the wall with him he told eren a story and asked eren what he thought it ment and he actually kind of mocked it and said it sounds like he was hopeful that humans could come together fighting against a common enemy. Yes that could be applied to the pure titans at the time but I also think it's applied perfectly with the ending that we got.

The anime did wonders making it more impactful. I just feel bad for people who still harbor such hate for the ending because the show means a lot to me and I'm sure it means a lot to them too :/ must suck to have such a beloved series not go your way I guess. But I feel the writing was on the wall for a lot of the major themes the finale exhibited.

    Have to disagree. It might seem subtle, but Armin NOT thanking Eren for becoming a mass murderer in their last conversation, in contrast to the manga, is a huuuge change, especially for the morality of the story. People reading the manga ending hated how Armin was just okay with Eren killing 80% and how he cared more about Eren being mean to Mikasa. In the Anime, what Eren did to humanity was a much bigger deal to Armin and broke him. They changed dialogue, rearranged and even added scenes. Wasn’t a fan of the manga ending, but the anime ending saved quite a lot imo.

      Sure it's a bit too much/over the top, but it does not change the freaking ending.

      I love the way the anime rearranged the dialogue. You still have the more lighthearted interaction between them, but that comes before Eren drops the bombshell that he will wipe out most of humanity outside the walls. Armin is devastated and practically begs him to find any other way. The interactions carries a lot more emotional with way it ends with both of them having a full heartfelt moment.

      I still think that Eren just accepting he was a slave to destiny was severely out of character compared to the rest of the series, but to each their own. He always wanted to be free, and in turn became a slave to that goal. He always fought for his freedom, why would he give up now? A better ending imo would be him realizing that fact, and sacrificing himself to save humanity. This would also make more sense as to why he was so easily defeated by the anti-Jaegerists, since that was my biggest complaint plot-wise.
      To me, something like this would've been a better end to the character a lot of us have stuck with for more than a decade. Nobody wants to see their favorite protagonist turn into a villain overnight for stupid reasons. You just can't do that without fans of the character becoming upset, just like Dany in GoT. If you're going to turn a protagonist into an antagonist, you really need to nail their motivations. Which just didn't click for me here.
