Reiner did know about the basement, remember that Commander Erwin told EVERYONE when he was recruiting for the Scouts ^^ Armin commented on it saying it's weird Erwin was giving that much information
Absolutely. The one detail the Warriors unit didn't know was the location of Eren's house in that big city.

There's a reason Eren repeated that him and Reiner are the same after Reiner broke down and confessed. What's eating away at Reiner is the fact that he was not "just following orders", it was absolutely his own decision to move forward with the plan.
"If only I hadn't known such people existed, I wouldn't have become such a half-assed piece of shit" (Reiner Season 2 Episode 6 right before transforming)
This is Reiner realizing that even after he met the people of Paradis, even after befriending them and realizing they weren't the devils he thought they were, he STILL chose to kill them. His guilt doesn't stem from the fact that he hadn't known any better, it's the fact that he knew what he was doing is wrong yet still decided to push forward, killing innocent people for his own selfish reasons.
And that's exactly why Eren was relieved by this confession. Reiner wasn't being brainwashed or pushed into doing what he did and neither was Eren.
"I was right, I'm the same as you. I think we were born this way."
Neither of them understand why they are the way they are. Reiner is overwhelmed by guilt and thinks it's simply because he's "a worthless piece of shit", but (at this point in the series) we still don't know how Eren truly feels.
This Eren quote sums it up perfectly: "...But there was something pushing us all along, causing us to step right into hell. For most of us, that something isn't of our own will. We're forced to by others, or by our environment. But the kind of hell seen by people *who push themselves into it* is something else. They also see something beyond that hell. Maybe it's hope. Maybe it's yet another hell. I don't know which is is. The only people who do know... are the ones who keep moving forward."
That's why the Reiner/Eren dynamic is one of my favorites in the series.
I'd almost jumped out of my chair when i watched this episode, the tension, the storytell from willy and the convo between eren and reiner made me dizzy. Great reaction as always and ofc with amazing discussion from you~

Eren isn't even angry. Before, he was so filled with rage that he could barely hold himself back from screaming. But now, he's so calm as he threatens to blow up and destroy a building. He's so nonchalant about it. It really raises the tension.

And it’s sad because he is so calm because he already knows what is going to happen. He already knows that in that timeline, he always has won against the world.
Eren never really changed, he just gradually lost hope throughout the series

Rembember this: Willy declared war first, Eren just retaliated and attacked afterwards, immediately.
Eren even felt resigned when Willy said "lend me your strength yo fight the devils of Paradis". It showed in his face as he closed his eyes
I try to remind every reactor of this. They tend to forget as some are blinded by the emotion

the question of siding with a someone is one of THE points of aot- There ARE NO sides to choose. Let alone real life, if you choose to "side" with someone you may fail to understand goals and motivations of other wonderful characters

In other words, Reiner and others know about the basement.
I mean, of course, they don't know exactly what's in the basement, but they know it contains information about titans.

This realization only came from a rewatch but Erwin intentionally announced to the cadets about the basement during recruitment to force any spies into joining the Scouts. He said soon after they were going to have an expedition to go there and that any new recruits would be participating, he then followed up revealing the high casualty rate of such expeditions to discourage any regular cadets from joining. We only learn after that the real goal of the expedition was to reveal the identity of any spies and ultimately it ended up revealing all 3 of them.

Imagine if Marley, hadn't decided to send the warriors to Paradis. I mean it had been 100 years of a world without titans right? Wait no, Marley, was terrorizing & subjugating the whole world with titans before anyone knew the name Eren Jaeger. Marley, literally kicked a hornets nest & endangered the world so they could keep conquering. I can't say that Marley's, perspective is understandable to me:)
It is understandable, they are falling behind to the world in terms of power and they must find power to continue the subjugation. The only way for them to get that is doing the same they've been doing all along, using Eldia's power. So since they need more they're going for the big one as they did before with the warriors, only this time they're weaker and decided to get help from the other countries using history as a trigger. I'm sure had they succeeded they would've probably stolen the founder and then would try to use it against the countries that were just helping them.
One of the best Episodes this Season 4 Part 1 because the Ending.

Why did Willy declare war, without trying to initiate a formal meeting with Eren and the Scouts elite/leaders?
Cause Willy persuaded the world into declaring war to Paradis "in the name of peace" but the real reason is, as always, that Willy knew Marley was losing power because of military technology from other nations and they wanted Paradis' resources AND the Founding Titan. That's why they sent the warriors to attack Paradis regardless of the Tyburs knowing King Fritz would never attack. In the end, it's the Tyburs' fault

willy also still feels guilt over what the eldian empire did for the last 2000 years and he doesn't really like the direction that Marley took in the last 100 years, he said it in 4x4 marley beat eldia but ended up becoming the same thing, so he was counting on eren or the intruders to kill the top brass so that magath can reform the military and he also wanted the eldians in lebirio to be seen as victums

Yes, afaik they held the whole events (the bazaar and the theatrical stage) in Liberio Internment Zone, which is a place where all Eldians residing in Marley lives. This event brought about people from around the world though, so yeah, Eren is killing Eldia people as well just as he does Marleyans and people from all over.

I think you missed the part where Eren acknowledges that Reina and himself are the same (as in they both understand there are good people on both sides). But you forgot to realize Willy declared war on the entire island and got the whole world backing him. If they won't take the time to talk to the people on the island and sort their differences out then what choice does Eren really have? It's either defend his homeland or roll over and die. Reina started it all by destroying the wall in the first place.

Episodes 5-6-7 are usually a climax arc in every season (part of season) and that arc in this season is by far my favorite thanks to the build up. Previous arc in season 3 part 2 was the most epic one for sure. But this one puts you in the edge of your seat. Prepare for quite a ride in he next couple of episodes. And same as people told you for previous season, it’s something you better watch one after the other. I know you might be many episodes ahead by the time of this comment if you read it at all. But yeah! Hope you enjoyed this amazing arc

I don't think it's ignorance, the lack of connection between warring leaders. It's geopolitics. Each of them is playing a game with millions, or rather, billions of lives, and they need to make sure it works out, and that the best comes out of their final decisions. It is unwise to simply trust that another leader will do the right thing or keep peace agreements. What if leadership changes, what if alliances break? Nobody lives forever, and in the real world we see alliances and peace deals being made and broken all by economic context, territorial or whatever. Don't forget that nations are vying for resources and territories, and what if at some point in Paradis there is a drought, and they can't plant anything there? will they have to expand territories or what will they do? Anyway, these are small things that should go through the head of those who lead a country, you should not bet on the good qualities and friendships of other leaders because these, no matter how friendly they are, will at some point be in competition with you.
Tybur cannot blindly trust Eren, who is impulsive and vengeful, and most importantly, any peace deal he makes is a lie. It is not true peace. Paradis has control of millions of Titans capable of carrying out a global genocide. Marley's, and the world's, alternatives were either to steal the power that control the Titans (and they had already tried), or to gamble it all on a full-scale confrontation, with all humanity trying to help each other to prevent a terrible catastrophe. And on Eren's side it's more complicated, he can opt for diplomacy (which I doubt it will work, because all diplomacy that come from unbalanced powers are fake, it's like the US making a deal with Japan after dropping nuclear bombs and creating an arsenal even bigger.
No one will trust and no one should trust Eren. Even if it weren't for him, and if it changed leadership, Paradis would still have this power to decimate everyone, and they still have a history of ancestors committing genocide and mass rape. And trust between nations arises from the military balance between them. A clear example is the cold war, two powers capable of global destruction, but neither side does it because the two sides are balanced. No honest deal would come out of diplomacy in which a nation is clearly weaker and more subversive. Wait fifty years and new leaders are born, they forget the previous mistakes of the old leaders and make new ones.)
Another alternative for Paradis is to go against everyone, but that would be committing global genocide. No chance for your enemies to take revenge or reproduce remaining masses with hate and etc... But even that is stupid.
History moves by itself...
Well said my friend , mauy people say why can't just character make "good" decision . Now a days it's hard for people to make decision for themselves let alone to make a decision which will affect thousands and lakhs of other people.

What people forget to realize that the Eldian empire ruled over Marleyans and the world for 2,000 years and not “2,000 years ago”, meaning there was 2,000 years worth oppression, ethnic cleansing and pain.
This seems to be glossed over often. The world was free from the Eldians for only a 100 years, and that amounts to nothing in the grand scheme of things.
@@bertholdtohoover446 It's long enough for pretty much everyone who experienced that suffering to die of old age. So there is no actual connection, we humans don't have genetic memory, we don't experience anything from lives of our ancestors. Technically, titan shifters in that story can experience memories of their predecessors, so that's that, but all of them are Eldians anyway.
Experiencing historical events by reading them in a history book is pretty weak base of comparison against someone who actually experienced oppression or ethnic cleansing.

My poor boy Reiner
I absolutely love this conversation between Eren and Reiner. Really shows how similar their characters actually are. Both were just in a shitty situation and did so many terrible things while fighting for their freedom, their home, their loved ones... Remember when Reiner and Bertholdt took Eren in season 2? Eren told them they're psychotic mass murderers who killed countless innocent people who've done nothing wrong, and he also said he's pretty sure nobody has ever done a worst thing than them in the history of mankind... But now he understands their situation, he understands Reiner... They thought of each other as enemies, thought the unknown nations to be devils but they realized they're all just people. No race or nation is evil, there's always bad and good people, people who made your life hell and people who showed kindness to you... Now they both get that. And Falco is starting to understand it more as well.

@@Tyrantofthewind I know what you mean, especially knowing everything else. But in this point, with what it is known in this moment, you can still ask yourself "But what if?". I know that this 'what if' is very ideal, and presumes having faith that humanity can be less despicable. Unfortunately, as in real life, people are horrible just because they can be. You only realize the inevitability of it all only later on. There are many factors that lead to this and one can still wonder what could have been different if even one thing would have diverged. I think it's fun to think about it, even if it's futile
