      I remember when I graduated last year, I had moved to a new school the same year COVID started, so I didnt had time to actually meet my classmate, but I wasnt really expecting anything. The year before that was the worst year of my entire life and I wasnt really looking forward for two more years of high school.
      Honestly, I should thank COVID for freeing me from that.
      Didnt went to prom, didnt cared about anything, I got my grades, saw that I had passed on everything (obviously I had, I had been cheating on tests online for two years), then I just laid on my bed, I thanked that it was over.

You HAVE to do it, but once it's over the hometown is gonna burn to the ground, monsters are gonna return to the overworld, and you're gonna have to go on an adventure to defeat the demonlord. But that shits just sprung on you. At no point in your life does anyone give you the proper training or education to defeat the demon lord. They just assume you'll figure it out on your own when you have to.

    I disagree a little bit on the "your classes don't matter" argument because a huge part of the value of science, math, history, etc is that they expose you to new concepts and career paths you otherwise might not consider. That said, making 17 year olds decide their career path and then shaming them when they inevitably change their mind a month into college is terrible and also there should absolutely be classes in high school that teach you applicable life skills like taxes.

    • @SweetflyRachel
      @SweetflyRachel Год назад +88

      I agree! I think high school is definitely lacking in its life skills and career education, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t important to develop a baseline understanding of different academic subjects, regardless of whether you’ll use it in the future. It’s more about rounding out your worldview as a well-educated citizen. If all high school did was teach us the bare minimum needed to function in society, it would be pretty awful education. I hope going forward, schools can not only continue teaching the variety of subjects they now teach, but expand their options further, allowing students to explore a wider variety of fields and interests.

He was a fucking bastard and I'm glad he's gone. But he retired in 2000, health had been going downhill for the better part of the past 10 years. 10 years ain't a lot of time to enjoy life when you're already in your 60s. Like my dad told me, you're older for a lot longer than your younger.... But in the end you might just work your entire life and die never having a chance to just chill and let the world go by.

    I was treated like an absolute moron by my classmates for suggesting that a lot of the stress they had over grades and academic/school accomplishments was mostly meaningless. They were convinced that if they didn't get everything right and didn't have every single little thing figured out that their lives were gonna be over. I knew people who would get 4 hours of sleep on average trying to academically stand out just so that they could get to be in dual enrollment or the honors class. I told them that a majority of what we were learning was going to have hardly any impact on us after high-school. A lot of these adults treated us like trash and hardly bothered to have a moment of self reflection in their teaching methods. Whenever a kid failed it was just the kids fault. After my sophomore year I was done with being treated like an educational prisoner and I dropped out. I got practically disowned by my family for this despite the fact that I was severely depressed at the time and heavily burnt out. A year later I studied for my GED and aced the test and skipped a lot of my prerequisites. I got into a college a year earlier than I would have if I stayed in high-school which is something I would have had to be in all honors classes to even hope for. I did great in college and got into the honors society in my first semester and became the vice president soon after. Founded clubs, and wrote papers and helped teach other first years how to improve their writing. As I predicted hardly any of what they taught us meant anything, I can't tell you the last time I've had to use 90% of what they taught us. And the SAT and ACT that so many people stressed over were things I could have taken at any time I felt like. And with the resume I built I didn't even need them to transfer. After my first year was done I went into trades and I've got another year or so before my degree is done. I'll be moving soon and I've got a job lined up that's gonna pay me 20 dollars an hour to start. My credit is great and my move will be pretty comfortable because financially I'm doing fine. I've received grants and scholarships along the way to help with my costs. And after my degree is done I'll be starting out at around 75k per year. But trust me I've heard plenty of stories from my family and friends in school back then that told me I was going to be a failure for not sticking with high-school. But from where I stand now I regret absolutely nothing and stand by my decision. High-school in this country is a joke and I had no intention of being the punchline.
    Edit update:
    Recently received a certification and have been started out at 22 an hour full time. I'm on track to complete my degree in a year or less and my apprenticeship will be finished in 2 more years. Financially I'm doing fine and the only thing that has been tough is trying to find an apartment during these summer months.
    Update 2:
    Found a great place for a cheap price, I have a truck now and basically every tool I need for carpentry. My degree will be done by the first month of the new year. I've also been offered some jobs in residential willing to pay me 28 an hour to start which I might transfer to soon.

And I’ve only recently realized the the seniors I’ve been looking up to naively have had literally no idea what they’re doing half the time. I also don’t feel like someone who will be an adult anymore. High school doesn't matter. The memories may be important, but do not let it become your life. Seniors who let themselves have high school be their identity fell apart during the last quarter of our year. They felt listless not being the popular kids anymore. They didn't know what to do.
    It's just school. You will get through it, and you will find yourself being happier when you graduate. Don't let mediocre teens tell you how you should feel, act, and be. Just be yourself. Focus on your education. Have fun with your friends. You can do this.

    As a swedish boi, the concept of american high schools have always been so weird to me. Feels like your entire life revolves around it. Schools in Sweden is just a place you go to have classes and then boot scoot boogie out of there as soon as possible. no sport teams, no chess clubs not any of that. its also a much more casual dynamic between students and teachers, no one calls anyone by their last names and the teachers (at least the cool ones) always sit with their students at lunch making jokes and shit

      Tbh thats how high school in the US is for alot of people too. Probably more than half of my school didn't do any extra activities at all, they just went to class then went home. I think popular media makes american high school look alot more involved than it actually is

    The best advice I could of gotten I got right after I graduated, and that was “everyone in high school is just a person you practice on, no one will matter at all”. And damn if that isn’t true, instead of trying to build friendships that died out right away I could of built my social skills going around being a social butterfly, plus at the end of the day who you know tends to make a bigger difference than what you know. Especially when it comes to getting good jobs.

    If I can give advice to anyone in high school now as an adult, try to learn some interesting skill. Pick up an instrument, learn to code, get fluent in another language, etc.
    You may not have the time and energy to do it as an adult so you'll be thankful you did as a kid. Esp bc it'll make you a more interesting person when you quickly reach an age that genetics and puberty don't matter as much as who you are as an individual.
    **Edit:** Glad this was good advice to some! I spent a decent amount of time in HS learning guitar and songwriting and I'm glad I have that skill today bc it really expanded much of my personal and social life, so I hope you find your thing

    The frustrating part is to KNOW that I only went to school to go to university and that I am only going to university because the field I want to work in requires a master and quite frankly I have spent 14 years of my life with NOTHING important at all which I will have to do for another four years and my actual "life" hasn't even started yet... WTF.

    • @Hyperversum3
      @Hyperversum3 3 года назад +57

      That's how education works buddy. I am a neuroscience student and I used the last 3 and half years to get a degree in biotechs, it or biology being a prerequisite for this master I am currently in, and more than half the courses were useless to my objective.
      BUT learning more can't be bad. That's why school to begin with is structured like this.
      Sure, knowing a bit more about biochemistry and less about general chemistry would have helped me, but most people aren't sure about what they want to do with their lives, having education systems provide a general knowledge help them. Hell, it's from when I started university that I wanted to go on the path I am but even so I had doubts and almost changed my studies.
      Just like for the general student learning about the powerhouse of the Cell won't be important but won't harm them, the same applies for your secondary knowledge.

      @Arcaryon 3 года назад +31

      @@Hyperversum3 I study politics with a focus on international relationships in Europe. Now, as you maybe know the general field of politics, like nearly all basic humanitarian scientific fields, is pretty wide so career opportunities can vary drastically - most people earn jack shit because they don't have a plan in this field but not only in that regard, I am a very special snowflake.
      I was sure pretty early on of what I wanted to do, I know myself very well and planned all of this out very carefully. I knew that I wanted to study, I knew that I wouldn't want much to do with stem, I came to the conclusion that I could do something with law, economics with a focus on the Chinese market or politics, I chose the latter as the relationships with China turned even sourer and as I noticed quickly that while I enjoy law, I didn't want to spend my life with it, so eventually I made the correct choice and picked something I just like to concern myself with and figured out the best way to eventually make money in the field - not because I want to get rich, again, I deliberately didn't pick law.
      Now, I am still studying and I don't know how the market will be in 4 years when I first really enter it but sadly, I lack an interest in something more practical so I made the best out of my talents. Regardless
      I still had to waste years of my educational life with stuff that wasn't even reasonably helpful or in any way justifiable from my personal perspective.
      I mean that in a pretty severe manner, I sat in my class, I learned and I haven't used most this knowledge ever since nor will I ever have to use most of it - fine, let's say that languages were useful, the basics were, of course, necessary and then I have like everybody some subjects which I genuinely liked. Still doesn't change the fact I planned out my humble current gamble with the knowledge I almost exclusively picked up outside of the education system while preparing for the finals which I concluded without much effort and I don't mean that as a brag but as an accusation. It was laughably easy. Like, the stuff that was difficult was my only (required) Stem subject.
      I know don't have all the answers, it’s just that I understand "how education works" for me and I am saying that the system we apply can be highly ineffective and was partly designed literal decades ago, remained almost unchanged in many school systems on the planet and that THAT is a problem for me.
      I know that it helps people to have a wide education but here is the thing - I don't care about others so much that I am willing to sacrifice YEARS of my youth for their lack of self-understanding. I still do not wish for them to make premature decisions, but you get my point stranger.
      That's not supposed to sound arrogant or like an asshole; I am just frustrated because unlike most people as it seems to me; I had the thought that none of this matters with 12 and not with 20. I wasn't super bright or super gifted but I had the luxury of time.
      Society is built by us cooperating and I know that people like to say that the lowest plank is the weakest part of the barrel but its 2020, better concepts could be implemented and quite frankly I study politics at least in part because I KNOW that essential things in my nation are going wrong and nothing has been done about it in years.
      For the general student, having better-paid teachers who can and want to afford more time for them and their problems would have been a good start. Why I say all this with such with confidence? Because I had good teachers, I was good ( not outstanding in any way but I aced what I had to without much effort ) at school, I enjoyed my time there for all the wrong reasons and I STILL say that it was a huge waste of time regardless.
      It's just... I don't have so long. In 20 years I will be forty. In 40 years, 60, in 60 years I will be 80 years old. And I still have so much I want to do. Life is short if you have plans. And I am afraid. Do you know what life is? I don't. But I remember a quote from a video of an old soldier about what death is I watched 5 years ago.
      "Once you realize they are gone, they're dead, then what death looks like, is nothing. There's nothing there. There's a body there but there's nothing at all. It goes from something, a big something to the smallest nothing that there can be. It goes from dreams and aspirations to nothing. You know, you can kick it, you can hit it with a stick, you can throw rocks on it, you can do anything and it won't bother, 'cause it's dead."
      ruclips.net/video/GxSR1VgVAUk/видео.html at 2:55 min
      I am terrified of dying. So incredibly afraid. I can't afford to waste my time with things I don't do for me, for my loved ones, for my small insignificant world because I have no god, no afterlife, no nothing, this is it, this small worthless life that can be snuffed out with one moment of carelessness. Nearly the entire world won't miss me when I am gone.
      I once loved a girl and for one sweet day in a fall a long time ago, I wasn't afraid of death. It was the single best moment of my life.
      That's why I want to learn what I need. That's why in regards to things that concern me, I don't compromise. I can't. I would hate me forever if I did, I couldn't live like that and because life has no reset button, no second chances I have to forge my small story. You will have forgotten about me by tomorrow. And that's ok. C'est la vie. The greatest gift there is.
      „Summae opes inopia cupiditatum.” - "He is richest who is poorest in his desires." Lucius Annaeus Seneca
      He was probably right in more ways than I would like to admit. Life well stranger. Good luck to you.
