Glad u did this video I have a 2008
Hey Scotty. I bought a 2009 Scion xB cause i watched the video you did on the Scion but after 3 weeks of driving it checked the fluids and the car had burned 3 quarters of engine oil. Any suggestions on how to fix that?
@@donshilo2024 I'm Scotty's assistant he said sell it! 🤣
How ironic would it be if Scotty gets into a car wreck and they amputation his arms. I can already imagine him flapping around those plastic prosthetic with hooks
07-08 had some issues but by 09 most were cleared. The 430 LS was better car. I own a beautiful 06.
Back in the late 90's, my boss had one of these & I got to drive it, for delivering customer orders. Big, fast, quiet, comfortable & one heck of a stereo. What a way to go! 😲😲😲
@Russell Johnson He obviously means an LS model
The lexus ls400 was made in 1989😒
@@audioamateur It still had a decent stereo back then lol
@@DEVILTAZ35 i'll bet. My 2007 LS460 has a fancy pants Mark Levinson system

You're But(t) hurt, you poor Kia lover!
If one is to get an LS460, stay away from 2007-2012 if you can help it. Respectively, the 2013-2017 LS460 is the better route. If you desire an older LS, my recommendation is the 98-00 LS400 or the 05-06 LS430 which featured the most year end model updates. This tattered LS460 is still better than any W220 or W221 Benz, believe that.
Why stay away from 2008-2012?
@@manimotard5429I've heard to stay away from the 07-early 2010 models. It's on the lexus forums too, they ironed out most the issues from mid 2010
what’s wrong with an 04 Ls430?
Except those years (and 2007) are the best looking ones they ever made, LOL. It's an expensive luxury car. Still less drama than BMW/Mercedes/Audi and a lot nicer.
2010/2011 the issues were solved
I’d still get this generation of Lexus . I like the style, they’re well made .
Go for the 2011-2012 model. They removed the bugs from it but 2013 to 2017 are even better.
The front suspension design was utter trash on this generation LS. Constantly tearing out bushings.
@@afa6361 2013-2017 are waay better , the interior is a major step 🆙
@@RickyCrowSAIt's not constant, stop over exaggerating this issue. It's just more frequent than an average car. Then again if you're buying this car because you think it's average, that's on you pal
@@_zach suspension bushings failing every 70k miles is absurd, especially for the cost and amount of effort to replace them. It’s stupid.
My 2019 Lexus GS-F has a V8 and it's the smoothest running engine I've ever seen, love it.
Is that the same 5.0L V8 that they used in the IS F (2008-14)? I dream of buying that car one day
@@JobiWan144 yes with some small tweaks
Exactly my experience. Nothing bad
The 5.0L Lexus v8's didn't have any of the issues that the 4.6's in the 460's had.
2019 at that price, it’d be a shame if it didn’t
I have a 2008 LS460. It's currently sitting at 345,000 miles, and I haven't done any work to it besides routine oil changes (which I'm going to be honest, have been behind on at times), tires, etc. Still runs pretty good, only problems id say is I think the transmission is slipping because its RPM's shoot up, and that it absolutely consumes engine oil (says oil is low or empty 2500 miles after an oil change). When I got the car, it was at 298k miles, and the previous owner never used premium gas, only regular. I drive about 500 miles a week for work.
How much did you pay?
have you changed the transmission fluid ?
Scotty, I just purchased a 2001 Toyota 4Runner 3.4L V6, Has just over 261K miles. I have to say, it’s a great suv! I’ve always wanted a 3rd Gen. But really was concerned with the reliability of the high mileage ones. (That was all I could afford) coming from a Volkswagen Jetta. The parts for the Toyota, are so cheap. I had to get a new radiator, it was $120 “in stock” at auto-zone! A radiator for my Volkswagen would have been well over $300.
Not only was it easy to work on, it’s a easy car to drive, everything is simple and where you’d expect it to be. Toyota and Lexus really have stuff figured out. And they have for the past 25+ years.
I watched a few of your Toyota videos, I’ve noticed you high recommended the 4Runner. Specifically the 3rd generation! I can see why! If anyone wants a great vehicle, a 4runner is the way to go!
The starters can be temperamental, and hard to get to. But I agree, awesome cars.
I bought a 2008 ES350 specifically because it's built off a Camry. My previous camry ran perfect for years until a head on collision...which the car saved my life. Thought about getting the V8 4 door....but remembered....I basically own a camry in my ES350.
Same exact car as me. It runs like a dream. And bought it with 59K miles! Hby?
Camrys are low key tanks 💪🏽
Yup! Also a happy owner of an '08 ES350. Bought it with "low" mileage (106k -- low for a Lexus); have put 30,000 on it over three years and have only done regular fluid changes and replaced the battery in that time. Best car I've ever owned. And yes, it's basically a fancy Camry, but built in Japan (ie bulletproof!). So, when something more serious than the battery needs replacing, just about any decent mechanic will be familiar with the engine and the part will likely be easy to get and not expensive!
Get a 290 HP Lexus LS400, and you won’t be sorry for sure.
I've read that the ES is built off the Avalon.
Not Lexus, but I have a Toyota 5.7 V8 with just over 300,000 miles on it. She wears her beauty cover during the colder months, and she goes topless during the warmer months. She makes some valve noise, and the performance exhaust is loud when it's cold. I figured the torque converter had grown tired of searching for 5th and 6th gear, so I drive in S-4. I up-shifting when needed and always launching in S-4... Zero hesitation, smooth idle, and it will smoke the rear tires if you so desire.
Someday I hope to have Scotty analyze this engines live & recorded data.
My buddys 5.7 toyota made a lot of valve train noise hated it so he bought a Cummins Ram
My 2015 Tundra 5.7 now has over 530k miles, no smoke, no leaks. Replaced plugs and oil. Did replace the crank sensor and starter.
Hey scotty! I just wanted to say that I really wish I had an automotive teacher like you back in high school. I was really interested in cars back then but my teacher would pick on me and call his students names and basically told me I didnt have the brainpower to be a technician. That pretty much killed any aspiration I had for any kind of technical work. It really messed with my head. I just wonder how differently things had gone if I had a teacher like you back then instead.
Only later as an adult did I realized I should have never listened to that A-hole but when your a kid that kind of stuff Is hard to let go.
Scotty might call you stupid is that OK
Well I'm not a child anymore, so maybe?
Remember as.... Norm Macdonald said....... Teachers are the real heroes.....lol.
I learned more real life lessons from my Tech teachers in high school. More than all others combined. You just had a bad one or he was just preparing you for the real world.
Well, it's a tragedy if your real last name is Ohm. But, talk about never too late; electronics, mechanicing, teching stuff, go 4 it. Yes don't let that a hole teacher define u. If it seems fun 2 do, just do it, 1 life 2 live, & it's not 2 late 4 u
It sounds like your teacher was just projecting his own failures on to his students. He probably didn't have the brainpower to make it as a real mechanic.
A neighbor of mine had the last year model LS 430 ('06 I think) which he drove for 560,000 miles before he was rear ended and totaled the car. Never any issues just normal maintenance and replacement items. He replaced it with the exact same vehicle that he bought used with about 120,000 miles. His goal is to record more miles than his previous LS.
@@johncampolo2177 I got a 2004 LS430 for $7,000 and I replaced the hood struts for like $40 from Autozone. It's normal for those to go bad on any car. This car is awesome. Best daily driver I've even been in and driven. I use it every day. The gas mileage is very close to my 4 cylinder 2007 era cars like only 2 MPG difference so I say it's the most fuel efficient V8 of that era.

I have a 2007 LS 460. It has 68,000 miles. I love it. It’s been babied for it’s life. Frequent oil changes, garaged, etc. I have no doubt I’ll be able to get 200k out of it if I keep it long enough. This example looks like it’s been neglected. Probably lack of oil changes if I had to guess. I think you can get away with a neglected Lexus or Toyota V6 as they are tough as nails but a Lexus V8 that’s neglected I’d steer clear of. But if you can find an LS in great condition there is nothing like a Lexus V8. Much more fun than a V6 Scotty!
I have a 2007 Lexus ls460. 250k no issues whatsoever. Runs like new I use 10w40 in it and change the transmission fluid once a year. I drain the fluid through the radiator and fill through the check plug of the transmission pan. My Lexus has no leaks whatsoever.
Not sure what you're going off about Scotty about the 1UR-fe being lower quality. Got 310k miles on my 2008 LS460 and it just eats up highway miles. Maybe clean the MAF on the LS460 and that will get rid of some hesitation issues. Sure the 1UZ is Toyotas finest V8 motor, but the 1UR-fe is fine piece that is of Lexus/Toyota standards.
Scotty over here making a stink about a first model year car with a revolutionary new engine 🤡
Look at EVERY other model year LS460, especially the 2010+, and you've got one of the best sedans ever made.
Yeah I feel you I got 320k running on my 2008 Lexus 460 and it rides smooth.
As someone who is learning mechanics your honesty a really entertaining channel. Keep it up
Just goes to show that every manufacturer will make mistakes at times

No. The owner of this car didn't change the oil. That is what wears timing chains on ANY manufacturer's engine. Engines during development are tested to 200K miles without issue.

but the most make 70 to 80% errors and Toyota and Hondas make 80% great cars, that the big differ to German brands and Ford gm either.
Still reliable than any german car brands
ive been trying to get one of these ls460s for over a year now, but the prices just keep increasing ever since i started looking for one. Looking for 2010-12 models since ive seen a few complaints for the prior model years. Almost an attainable dream car for me at this stage in life.
If the hood won't stay up, pull it off, and leave it off, the beauty cover works as a second hood for aerodynamics, and you won't have to remove the bird poop from the hood. Probably gain MPG due to less weight too.
Scotty is when an engineer becomes a mechanic. Great diagnosis
Those LS460's have some major issues. The most common are the control arm bushings ($5000 fix from Lexus), ABS actuator $$$$...
5 grand for bushing replacement...?

I have a 2015 LS 600hL and my dashboard de-lamented - faulty installation from Lexus. Mine is garaged with 51K miles. Lexus did nothing to correct the problem and replacement cost were - honestly - 16K for new dashboard and 2.5K to install. So I had is re-wrapped and a restoration shop in Denver for 3K. What I also did was legally tint the front windshield to eliminate the UV rays. Disappointed that Lexus did not stand behind their mistake. I want to share my story with all Lexus owners.
My wife and I love watching your videos Scotty.

when will you do the timing belt
Always learning something from Scotty!
Change the timing belt! It was due for a new one at 90K miles. While you are there change tensioners and water pump. That is what I do with my 4.7 V8 in my 4-Runner 2004. 230K miles and runs like new. Not one rattle and tight.

Strangely my Lexus V8 2001 LS430 is exempt from the paying the ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Fee)(tax on the poor) that has been established in London UK for so called old pollutiing cars.
The ls430 was released as a low emissions vehicle.

I bet someone did the valve cover gaskets and an O ring slipped off to throw the code. Pull the top and you'll see. Most people don't check this
Lost the only master key for a 2001 lexus 430 , the dealership does not record the key programming via the car VIN . So to resolve the issue you need to replace the engine anti theft module , the ecu controlled steering lock mechanism and the engine ecu reprogrammed plus a new master key fob.The repair was going to be in excess of $5000 Australian dollars.
Lexus's luxury sports convertibles are the best kept secret imo. I recently purchased a 2014 IS250C w 85k miles. I researched for months before chosing the IS convertible.
*now I'm in search for a body shop specializing in Lexus, bc their is a specific build for these, but requires a knowledgeable specialist to know which F Sport front bumper is the best fit.
Glad to see your comments on the beauty covers. I agree! I can tell you we live in the SW desert. It's very hot. When we got my wife's RAV4 (V6) we went thru the front ignitors 3 times in 100K miles. It was weird because it was always one of the front ones that went bad. The back ones never went bad. So the last time I changed one of the front ignitors, I left the "beauty cover" off. We now have 190K on the car and not one has gone bad. The back ones are up against the firewall, away from the radiator. The front ones are right next to the radiator and the cover just channels the air right to them. So the cover is in the attic and it'll never be back on the car.

One thing I like about you, Scotty, is you don't take anything at face value... even all those scan codes! Some mechanics would look at that and write up a $2,000+ repair bill. Wow all that computerized stuff just to drive down the road.
It’s interesting that water and dust are the 2 main killers of computers.
I personally like the old 70’s cars where a person could actually work on the car if you had some tools with you and some duct tape and water in the trunk with a real spare tire and rim available.
Today’s cars are WAY to complicated just to drive to the grocery store.
Yeah, the oldies were the best. Still got an old 55 chevy I've had almost 30 years, not complicated at all!

I'm sure happy to know I'm not the only sarcastically minded individual! Keep up the great work Scotty.
Planned obsolescence is part of the reason modern cars aren't as reliable as the older models. Follow the money.
Cool tech tip about checking timing advance at idle vs revved to determine timing chain slack.
I sold my 1995-sc400 with 400,000km on the v-8..Leaked zero oil-zero knocks or misses and still had FULL power.-best engine I have ever owned..not even close
That’s not true. I haven’t seen a 400k that doesn’t leak oil. Toyota owners do a lot service but they don’t report it and pretend it’s bullet proof.
I have a 95 Lexus ls400 and was driving it normally and the car suddenly turned off and the dash lights turned on. Put it into neutral right away and restarted. Then it ran like nothing happened. THOUGHTS ANYONE?
Ignition switch or ECU. I would bet it's the ECU.
Electrical fault?. I would get it checked anyway as you don't want it doing that on a highway with a 22 wheel trailer truck right up your backside :)
I know your a staunch believer in Toyota, I tend to agree they make a reliable vehicle, but recently I viewed a video on Louis Rossmann's channel where he discusses the recent action that will be undertaken by the manufacturer. Where you will have to pay a monthly fee to use the keyfob to unlock your car that only connects directly to the car. I would like for you to view his recent video and get your take on such an action by them.
Rodents love to chew on my rides, love the engine covers!
Never buy a first model year from anybody. That being said, I bought a 2001 IS 300 and a 2006 IS350, both first model years. Neither had serious problems, mostly aggravating issues.
Hey Scotty I'm thinking of getting a new car and I was looking at a 2014 GS 350 what are your thoughts on this car, and what should I look out for when testing it?
Hi, I have owned a 2015 Lexus 350 AWD for 3+ years and it has run like a charm. It drinks premium gas which is the only minus. If you decide on a new car I’d suggest the3022 Toyota Camry AWD or Hybrid. If you have extra cash, go for the 2022 Lexus 350.
I've heard that the LS430 is the best of the Lexus cars.
Been beaten . And poor oil change intervals with crappy oil .
The beauty covers are to make the car quieter scotty 🤦♂️
Edit: I love the live data readings they teach me to look at used cars and know what to look for thank you scotty
This happens due to the software not being compliant to AUTOSAR and MISRA safe code standards. So some things trip the other.
Honestly I don't see a problem with them. You can't expect a 100 grand car to have next to none expensive faults. It's still a 100 grand car failing, even when worth just 10
That's where you're wrong this is a 4.6 V8 used in many different Toyotas. It's not some special high end performance engine.
@@itptires Don't they modify it to squeeze out more performance though? That's why the "same" engine needs premium gas on a lexus and not on a toyota
I had to drive my 1992 sc400 in a foot of snow the other day it was no bueno
$2000.00 to fix it would be a lot less than buying another used car(s) that are currently selling for 42% over what they were a year ago…!
2k for a chain tensioner? Odd... again I can only talk BMW but there the tensioner is stuck in from the outside so you just loosen 2 bolts on the side of the engine and pull the tensioner out. Plug the new one in and Bob's your uncle.
Why didn’t you just replace the tensioner and the chain ? The parts could be had for this car cheap . Just an excuse not to change the parts. The engine will be ruined if the tensioner fails
I`ve no idea what Scotty's talking about, but he`s good to listen to.
I have had 3 2021 GX460s and now I have a 2022 GX460 and this one is NOT the same as the previous 3. It rides a lot rougher, the steering wheel has more play in it, the engines doesn’t feel as smooth or buttery as the previous 3 I had. A few others that I know that purchased the 22 also complain about the rough ride. Looks like the supply shortage is making Toyota go with different manufacturers with lower quality. Man, this 22 I have has a harsh ride. I feel every bump!!. I’m going to get rid of it as I really like it but for this kind of money, I expected to glide over the road like my last 3.
Even Toyota/Lexus aren't built like they used to be.
Those ‘beauty covers’ help manage heat, sound, dust, etc. I keep mine installed.
This is not a common issue of LS460. If someone buys the flagship Lexus model (even second hand) they should be prepared for $2k - $5k bill for major repair. These cars are well built and can last if you take care of them. Of course you can get more reliable V6 Lexus but you will never get what the "L" class offers.
Scotty, I just bought an 09' ls460, do they still have that problem in that year? I bought this car with 170k miles on it thinking that was a fraction of the cars life. I already swapped my struts to coils, replaced all the control arms with aftermarket and changed the brakes to drilled and slotted
Yes... before the 2013 facelift the 07-12 460 are the worst rated LSs...07-09 is the worst
@@RtistiqSkubie I have an 07 LS460 and i disagree. Never had any issues with mine and my car has every option except for the long wheelbase. Even the air suspension and control arms still have no issues at 159000kms but I of course know that these will have to be replaced at some point. The radar on this car is amazing and the features/comfort make me feel like it is one of the best cars ever made!
I have a 07 with 127000 only thing I did was change the control arms cost me about 1200.
I bought a 1999 LS400 for $4,500 with 120,000 miles on it now 150,000 miles and a 2004 LX470 with 170,000 miles in 2020 for $11,000 now it has 210,000 miles great cars!!
I think a funny video would be one that was titled "A Sad Day for Dodge/Chrysler Owners." Then Scotty would start laughing and say that they were all sad days. Well, at least Dodge/Chrysler is consistent. Consistently bad but consistent.
Usually a worn timing chain rattles really loud at idle. Just me but I prefer the LS400 or LS430 to the LS460. Those 460s are really complex.
Yup the 3.5 runs and runs and runs. Many into the 300,000 mile range.
It's a happy day for me as I got confirmation that my ordered Rav4 hybrid modell year 2022 has started to be made in Japan 👍😁.
Excited for the LS400 video!
That's still low mileage! My 2015 Volkswagen Golf Sportwagon (Turbo-Diesel, injected) has over 160K, so I'd still feel like the Lexus has a lot of life left in it! Plus, it's not a Volkswagen... Volkswagen, turning drivers into mechanics for more than 70 years!!!
I can't believe the amount of plastic crap in that engine bay! What's the point in having a bonnet? (hood) If I owned it, I'd take all the pointless plastic off, because it gets really hot here and I like to be able to see what's going on with the engine. My Camry has the plastic engine cover, but the everything else is uncovered. I don't even know why they have those covers in Australia. It doesn't get cold enough to warrant having them.
Haven't been able to get beyond east TN! Beautiful here !!!
⭐🌲🎅⛄❄ ⭐ MERRY CHRISTMAS ⭐❄⛄🎅🌲⭐
In a perfect world Scotty owns an LS600hL, IS-F and a LX570
Merry Christmas Scotty.
I blew a headgasket in my 08 gs350. Took the entire engine apart myself and was surprised to see that 2GR had direct injection when toyota didn't start using 12 injectors until 2017. It cost me $1600 in parts (replaced all seals and bearings with new waterpump and spark plugs) and 5 weeks rebuilding and I sold it shortly after out of disappointment. I didn't expect that from Lexus. Especially coming from a 1mz ES with 350k . I would by another one of those no question.
You want to buy a Lexus or Toyota?
@@peterenerst6492 not currently interested in buying either at the moment but I would buy an 1mz or 3mz ES if I needed another daily
My 2006 IS 350 has been nothing but fantastic with only 45k mi. I'm optimistic that it will be just fine for another 150k+ with routine regular preventative maintenance...
I enjoyed his videos. He knew his stuff. Would have been my go go mechanic. Rip scotty .
Those leaves under the hood near the wipers aren't hidden, maybe the customer should buy a beauty cover to hide the debris.
I have a 2007 and I have a oil leak that keeps coming back I’ve been to the dealer twice and they told me that it was bad seals I paid 1800 to get all those things replaced and the problem it’s back now I have to take it back again I like the car but I can’t keep paying thousand plus dollars to get it fix
The chain stretched abit early if you ask me.
Snapchat has a filter with Scotty's tinted glasses 😁 Is my new Facebook profile avatar.
You got to love Scotty for all this cheer and good will lately. Especially at this holiest time of the year. HO-HO! 🎄
Scotty offer your intellectual perspective to Toyota I hear they are having some issues moving forward into the future.
A dead or dying battery will thought simultaneous cam and crank sensor codes
beautiful 95-97 ls400 parked up scotty
Happy holidays Scotty!
Happy new year scotty
I found Nissan V6 chains to last the longest.
Actually Scotty the reason the engines have covers is to protect the engine from road debris
At least my 2021 Infiniti QX80 4WD Sensory doesn't have all that plastic beauty covers, when I open the hood.
Even some of the v6 engines have problems with timing chain guides.
Timing chain tensioner that are worn are not common on this car. Very few ever have this go bad.

The "S" Class is still the pinnacle of high speed luxury, & the suspension does not die in the 65,000 mile area...
The electronics do though lol. You only lease those cars for 4-5 years and make it someone else's problem lol
