- A Toyota Master Diagnostic Technician shares the Best and Worst Used Lexus models to buy. Some of the Worst models will be a surprise to some!
In this video we're continuing on Lexus-thon! at the Car Care Nut channel with the best and worst Lexus models to buy per your request and as promised in the previous video!
We'll start off with the best middle aged Lexus models to buy. These are models that are out of the factory warranty that I would recommend even without an extended warranty.
Then we'll move on to the oldies section where these are older models that are still reliable enough to drive a lot more miles.
Then we'll move into the bad Lexus models. Folks this is the truth from experience. To some it will be hard to hear the car that they own be called bad and if you own of those models and it's been good I am very happy, glad and wish it continues to be good.

the worst Lexus is still better than the most Buicks, Chryslers, BMWs, Early 2000s Mercedes, Cadillacs, Lincolns
Got that right
you mean the worst Lexus is still better than all of those. not “most”. chryslers, BMWs and Buicks are straight up garbage
Many more Lincoln Town Cars with half a million miles on them than Lexus ls400/430/460
FACTS!
@@unclejoe6811 Sure...Im not saying its bad but what I am saying is Id still rather have a Lexus LS over a Lincoln Town car. The Lexus LS out there driven 250k miles are in most likely in a better shape than the town cars driven 250k miles
As a current Lexus owner I can honestly say that I will NEVER buy a different brand ever again. I bought a very high mileage, but well taken care of, 1991 LS400 eleven years ago and I still drive it daily. I currently have close to 400,000 miles and going strong. That said, I am not a "Lexus can do no wrong" fanboy. I am very appreciative of the Car Care Nut for making these videos and helping us make better buying decisions. I am sure that when I am ready to buy a second car or replace my current car, I will use this list as a guide in order to avoid problems. Big thank you.
I live in Australia have been a an LS 400 owner for 4 years.
Hands down best built luxury sedan made Period! Fit, finish!
Car had 290,000 Klms now has 340,000 Klms still doesn't use any oil,or water,or transmission oil!
Car still rides & is still bank vault tight! No rattles no vibrations
VVTI engine 210kw/420nm
Extremely fuel efficient 800klms on
Highway per tank! Car is built to last, like Mercedes were made in the past! Wouldn't buy any other luxury brand than Lexus
The LS is the best selling luxury sedan since 1989 in America
Lost 1997 to BMW 7 series then won it back in 1998 & has kept the title ever since best luxury sedan period! Regardless of price!
Change the oil and filter every 5k mi. and you might well put another 400 k. on it. But don't let it rust!!!
I have a similar story. I've had a 1993 LS400 for nearly 10 years now and while I have had to fix a few things it's been a fantastic car and the best engineered car I've ever experienced. I think I will be keeping it for a long time, I put nearly a hundred thousand miles on it in that 10 years and I'm about at 259,000 miles now.
Awesome advice
I have been driving Lexus cars since the late 1990s starting with the LS400 up to what we now drive..2015 RX350. I think this is my 12th Lexus in last 25 plus years. I have bought certified and non certified Lexuses and several service loaners with nominal mileage on them like my current car which had 10K on it when i bought it. I can honestly say that in all those years the only problem i ever had with one what when the battery went dead on my original LS400...Im not lying!LOL> My current service loaner which i have owned since 2015 now has 88000 miles on it and I am itchy to get a newer NX300 to get upgraded technology. Unfortunately, Lexus pricing, both new and used, have skyrocketed since the pandemic so i am very reluctantly considering switching to another Toyota, or Nissan Rogue, or Hyundai Santa Fe, but i HATE to switch because of their reliability compared to Lexus. Now that my wife and i are older , retired and dont drive nearly so much as before, i really should buy a certified RX or NX, but dealers will try to STEAL my tradein which is in excellent shape, while charging ridiculous for the same used Lexuses they are trying to steal in trades on their new or slightly used cars. As much as we love the Lexus that wont be happening. Maybe i will sell my car privately and then buy a Lexus directly, but with only one car that wont be easy with limited inventory at Lexus dealers. I would never buy a Lexus from a non Lexus dealer because their cars are not certified.
01:32 🚗 The Lexus ES 350 is a highly recommended middle-aged model due to its reliability and value.
02:27 🚙 When considering the Lexus RX 350, opt for models from 2010 and up to avoid power steering and radiator issues.
04:02 🏎 The Lexus IS 350 and GS 350 are reliable cars with slightly higher maintenance costs compared to other Lexus models.
05:24 🚚 The Lexus GX and LX are dependable trucks with high resale value, making them solid investments.
07:05 🌟 The Lexus LS 430 is a timeless oldie known for its longevity and reliability, although it comes with a higher price tag.
Also the Lexus GX and LX issues to be concerned with at 16:35
@Rivizar: Thanks for the summary. Can you add the model years as well? Thanks!

I have a Lexus 450h BEST VEHICLE I EVER OWNED. I’m meticulous about maintenance, but have never had to replace anything but tires. It’s a 2013 and plan on keeping it another 10-15 years. Drives like new!!! ❤❤❤❤
Same goes for my 2012 Lexus RX350. I'm planning on getting rid of my 2023 BMW X3 as soon as I can... but I'll be keeping my 12 year old Lexus. It's no speed demon but as reliable as the sun rising in the east😊
Any updates on your gs450h? I’m looking at a 2012 gs450h

Personal testimony: We own a 2010 RX 350 2wd, bought it new in 2010, drive it daily, has 160k miles on it. This car is absolutely amazing, we’ve driven it cross country twice and drive from Fl. To Canada about every other year. We tow a 17’ boat with it too. We plan on keeping this car at least another 10 years, maybe even another 15 or 20.
I own a 2013 RX 350 F-Sport. It just crossed 100k miles the other day-- and I couldn't agree more with your statement! So reliable... I love it. As a millennial, I often wish I could take it off road., Thought about grabbing a 4-runner... But... I just love my RX so much... and would want that legendary 4.7 V-8... thinking about both?? I have an 06 Rx 330 with 170k miles.. it is still a dream. Have only done brakes and struts since I bought it 6 years ago with 70k miles on it
I have a 2005 ES330 with 59,000 miles. I have worked from home for the last 30 years so drive it locally. Still looks showroom new. My mechanic said he will buy it when I sell it since he says it will last another 200,000 miles.

This video was absolutely phenomenal! I am looking to purchase a Lexus and definitely did not want to be "car poor" I love preloved vehicles, so this gives me so much to research and select the best model for my budget!!!! Thank YOU-You and Scotty keep me in the knowledge!!!!!
I have owned, and still do, an IS250. It crrently sits at around 300k km and runs flawlessly. Kept up the oil changes and fed it premium fuel and had not one mechanical related issue at all.
What’s you’re best advice for maintaining these cars? I have a 2012 with about 100k miles on it and I’ve heard bad things about this engine. I know my car has a good history and I also keep up with it. I just had the trans fluid change, front and rear dif oil changed, a coolant replacement, and I change the oil every 5000 miles
@@das05 5W-30 every 8000-10000km. Also give it premium fuel, it pays off in the long run. I've got basicly no carbon. You will also have to change the front end links, they tend to wear preety quickly. The suspension arm bushing also tend to give way somewhere between 200-300k km. Other than that, if you live in a place where you get salty roads, try to get the underside washed atleast once a week. It is already preety well proteced, but i do it just to stay on the safe side. Other than that, I hope it serves you well for years to come.
@@jerrymcm4042 this is all good to know. I’ve also been considering adding a catch can, thoughts? I’ve only put premium in it, it says it’s required on the gas door so I’ve always followed it. But that’s all good to know, thanks for the advice
All that you said but my Q50 hybrid 3.5 instead 💟
same here, I have IS250 with 300K+ miles and never had any problems with engine. Just fill in with premium fuel and don't listed to stupid youtube videos

Picked up a 06 ls430 with 80k miles 3 yrs ago. Just hit 103 k miles. Best car ever owned. Will never sell.
@@B2stunt1 Same here! Bought a 2005 LS430 2 years ago, and will keep it forever. Every journey is a joy.
He’s clearly clueless because the 400 is way more reliable by far.
I'm a Lexus Master Tech and completely agree with this video! You nailed it man. A couple of things I would add.
The increased maintenance cost for GS/IS mainly comes from the way the cars eat tires. We have seen them need tires as early as 20k miles.
Buying an LS430 now, you run the risk of oil leak issues. It's usually a couple thousand to fix the leaks. However once you do, they are bulletproof reliable.
Avoid any Lexus with the 4.6L V8. That motor is hunk of garbage. About every 100k we see coolant leaks coming from the valley plate. It's a very labor intensive job, usually around the 2000 dollar range to fix.
Ls460's go through front control arms every 100k. OEM arms are not cheap and if you think you can get around that by going aftermarket, they wear out 3x as fast.
Not many people realize how reliable ISF's are. With consistent maintenance we have seen them reach over 300k miles. The 5.0L V8 is a solid motor
Is a dedicated space allowed for a Lexus ES 05-06-07, Rx08-07, or IS 07-08?
Just bought a very very good condition 2010 GX 460 for my wife... really concerning to hear that about it's engine. Is that your only complaint about the engine? Is there any preventative maintenance to avoid it? Or maybe a quick way to check that it's not leaking to keep an eye on that specific problem?
@Presence_of_Mind_ It's much less common for the valley plate leaks to happen on GX460s. I'd say we see valley plate leaks 1 in every 200 trucks with 100k+ miles. The LS460s are more like 1 in every 50. When the leaks get severe, you can see pink going down the back side of the engine and on top of the transmission. We usually check in the shop by using a boroscope to look under the intake manifold. A good preventive measure would be to change the out the coolant
@@thomaspattison1397 sounds good I plan doing a coolant flush in the near future. Thank you for the advice
Any opinions on a 2004 RX 330? Looking to possibly buy one with 124k miles.
First lexus I owned was a 06 GS300, never had an issue. Second was an 03 LS430, was old and had a serious oil leak so had to get rid of it. 14 ES350 current daily driver, no complaints. My fav car was the LS430. It was the most comfortable and had the best suspension. The LS430 felt like i was floating around in a cloud on the streets of Chicago.
Was the maintenance on the ls430 more pricey than the es350 ?
We’ve had 6 Lexus currently 3. The quality is just impeccable, the only pricey repair was a timing belt on my SC 430. They just hold up very well
I would own the worst lexus/Toyota over the best domestic

I've owned a 2006 LS430 for about three years. I love that car. No one ever complains about having to sit in the back seat. The seats are as good as a Stressless recliner. The sound proofing of the cabin is better than anything from 47 years of owning cars. A tank of gas lasts me 2 months so hopefully there are years and years left of economical ownership.
how does your tank last this long?

Wow! For someone who is in the market to get an old ES350, this is the best, most informative video I came across! Thanks alot!
Appreciate the pictures with the models. Lots of numbers if you don't know Lexus, so helped me keep track. Thanks!

does a 04’ 430 with 104k miles for 11k sound fair? one owner as well
had my 08 250 for 2 years, got it with 169k miles now i’m about over 185k miles. Best car i’ve ever had. 10 hour road trips no problem. Never had anything to out except the original 13 year old alternator from factory. Regular maintenance is always on time and i’ve done other stuff like suspension, brakes and rotors all that. It’s been a great car and i can still throw it around at times.
Would you finance a 2011 gs350?
I have a question, I’m in the market for one and I’m going to see one at 140k miles, should I buy it. I’m unsure if the transmission has been serviced but it looks flawless overall.
@@pasidudissanayaka1843Imo, 140k miles is pretty damn low for a Lexus, and if it’s been well-maintained then that’s even better, but you should definitely find out when/if the transmission has been serviced if possible, and maybe see if there’s a maintenance log or Carfax report available. I’ve heard that it’s not uncommon for some IS250’s to have carbon buildup issues, and the car may feel a bit slow compared to the +100 HP the 350 adds, but overall they should definitely still be reliable cars and I can’t think of any other downsides aside from what was mentioned in this video (I’ve been doing a ton of research on Lexus cars myself since I’m considering getting a used one, but this is a bit of disclaimer since I’ve never actually owned a Lexus myself). Just my two cents, sorry for the wall of text and I hope this helped a bit

Thanks so much for including Lexus in your video lineup! Keep up the great work. Be forever blessed and favored!
'05 LS430 owner here (after upgrading from many years of a '92 LS400). After nearly 3 years of ownership, I can certainly attest to the reliability of these tanks. Even being 16 years old, it has only ever required regular maintenance items to keep going and going. Almost all of these items are extremely simple to do if you have some basic tools around and a spot to work. Additionally, the Lexus forums are a wealth of information regarding questions, troubleshooting, and general support. I can't speak highly enough about my ownership experience and have tried to convince several people to get them as well. What really separates the LS430 for me though (on top of the reliability and simplicity of mechanical design), is the craftsmanship and quality of materials. The doors feel like a bank vault, all of the wood is real, and it's still one of the quietest and most effortless interiors I've ever been in. It's spoiled me in a sense, as I find myself critiquing cars that are newer and significantly more expensive that seem subpar when compared to my old Lexus. If you're in the market for the best bargain luxury sedan around, look no further than the LS430.
I totally agree. I loved my LS400 but my LS430 is even better. I didn't think they could do better but they did. It is just a magically awesome car.
Definitely gotta agree my 06 LS430 was nothing short of excellent before someone loses T-Boned me. That by far was the best model I've ever owned.
You are right about this timeless body design My LS430 2006 is modern luxury flint mica and would never take even a new camry to let my lovely LS430 go.
Bought one of these last year. Unfortunately, it got into a fender-bender not long after. Great car!
I agree. My LS430 is fantastic. Btw the wood is veneer.
Worked as an engineer 16 years for the german Automobile Industrie/// had several Mercedes/Audi/BMW’s!!! LX 470/100 Series 2002/ 5 Gear automatic. Daily driver with trailer up to 3k. I just picked up a 2001 LS430, 2 owner, 135k, still has the clear plastic on carpets from new! Absolutely love this car! Previous was a 2000 LS 400 with 265k miles!
4 years ago I bought a 2010 IS 350 hard top convertible with only 40k miles. It was recommended by my mechanic (he emphasized 350 too.) I’ve had no problems with this car. It’s really fun to drive. I plan to do some cosmetic work and keep it forever!

Happy Saturday, my brother. Thank you for your hard work and help.
I’ve got an 08 ls460 with 276,000 miles on it luckily I didn’t get the one with the air suspension and I love it. It hasn’t ever given me trouble besides when I had to replace a few control arms, it’s a fantastic car and yes repairs on it are a little pricy but if you are prepared for that then in my opinion it’s the best purchase in the world
I have a dark green 98’ LS400 with 230k miles…had it for about two years bought it at 195k and instantly got the timing belt replaced. It’s been absolutely fantastic for me and hasn’t given me any issues whatsoever. Paired with a set of 19” Work Schwert SC3’s and it’s a pretty dope ride

ANOTHER EXCELLENT VIDEO FROM AMD!
I've got a loaded 2014 GS 450h - no issues since new. I maintain it myself and it's not once been in the shop for a problem. Gorgeous car, very high quality, and surprisingly fast. And it gets about 32 mpg in the city.

Thank you for your thorough review of all the models. Long waited for this video. Thank you 🙇 for taking the time to make this video. Much appreciate!!!
Great video series AMD keep it rolling. I had a 2005 Lexus ES 330 a few years back just as a second car it was such a great car. I loved how it drove ,and just the overall simplicity off everything. I know drive a 20 ES 350, I have always loved the ES line really great cars.
02 es300 owner here 122k miles. Great cars
Not all LS 460s have air suspension. Look for the height adjustment button on the center consul. Those are the cars with air suspension. Another big problem with the LS 460 are the control arms. In the earlier years 2007 through 2009 they weren’t that good and they often need replaced. OEM parts could cost as high as $8000 to replace all four. Actually there are eight. Another problem is the brake modulator. These often fail and are pretty expensive to replace. And also the water pumps sometimes will be suspect. So if you’re looking to buy one, check to see if those items have already been replaced. and if not, at least have them thoroughly inspected. And they are a fantastic car.
I own a LS400 1993, Bought if for $4000.00 three years ago in California, one owner, pristine condition, and less than 80k miles. I was in the process of doing some things on it, pesky electronic things, headliner came down in front, leather in front needs a bit of help, but overall mechanical condition is good with the exception of the speedometer doesn't always work. I then had a few days of feeling poorly and spent them online looking at used Lexus. I bought, on impulse , a LS460L in Florida, one owner, corporate CEO owned. Thank goodness it does not have the air suspension after listening to these videos, however, even at less than 60K on it, already have had issues with brakes, not THE BIG issue, but still some things had to be replace to get the brake warnings off. It is a gorgeous car but I wish I had taken the 17K I used to buy it and instead sent my LS400 to have EVERY single thing fixed including the interior leather front seats only, and all the pesky electronic goodies that aren't working anymore like the up/down antenna , the radio which is on and off, same with the speedometer, a few paint issues hardly noticeable. I could have completely restored the LS400 and had money leftover instead of buying the LS460L, I am going to try and sell the 460 ASAP before I loose too much on it. If someone who has more cash to burn than me buys it, it will still be a great car, but for me not so much.
I bought an '03 RX300 AWD in 2014 with 160,000 miles on it. I now have 275,000 and it's been insanely reliable. Yes it has the sludging issue that this engine has but I just change the oil every 4k. I've had to have 2 repairs total since buying it.
1. ECU was throwing up knock sensor codes but it was the ECU itself that needed replacing.
2. The original alternator died on me yesterday so that is getting replaced.
I did have to replace a servo for the hvac system and actuators for 3 of the doors, 3rd party parts were super cheap and they have held up 5 years so far.
Other than that, just fluids and brakes. Never driven a better car in the snow and it does surprising well on the sand and trails too.
Needing to get something with more seats for the growing family but it's been impossible to get a Sienna.
In September I bought a 2004 rx330 and I can confidently say it is one of the best cars I’ve ever owned, the awd system paired with snow tires preforms incredibly in the snow and I’ve never felt safer in a car. I’m 6’6” and I have plenty of room in it and so do the people in the back thanks to the sliding and reclining rear seats. I previously had a 2002 4runner which was an unbelievable car offroad and in the snow but the fuel mileage compared to my RX was horrendous. I’ve also owned 2 gs300s in the past year, one of them a 1998 and the other a 2000, and those are also high on my list of cars I’d recommend to anyone looking for a cheap and reliable commuting car or first car. Tons of leg room in them as well. They get high 20’s for mpg and they ride amazing, both had over 250k on them and you would’ve thought they were brand new with how well they ran and they can take a beating. I only got rid of them because I moved down to college and didn’t need to have 3 Lexus’s😂. And as far as maintenance and parts for the rx330 they are dirt cheap especially compared to some of the German competitors from the same years. A full set of ball joints for my car is around $200 and my friend is looking at around $1,200 for ball joints for his Audi. The only complaint I have about my RX is the squeaky dash when it gets cold out, other than that I have nothing bad to say about the vehicle
We drove my step son to the dealer so he could pick up his brand new Dodge Mini van. We drove him in our old rx330. I felt terrible when he said, "This car is Amazing....I wish I could afford one." His new mini van was worth 3x as much, but I just stayed quiet
@@rcannon409 so what are you saying that the RX series isn't as good as a dodge mini van? Or the RX is a myth better vihical than dodge mini van??
I have a 2002 RX300 that was the first model of this suv. Still driving it 21 years later!
I have a 2005 RX330 with 223k miles on it using pennzoil platinum oil and it’s been 7500 miles since my last oil change. The oil in it looks, feels and smells brand new. I try to never take it for short so the water and fuel evaporate from the crankcase. Only time I will take it for a short trip is if I’ve already driven the car on a decent trip that day.
I am 6’8 and still love my 2004 RX 330, such a perfect vehicle!
Bought my mom a 2010 ES 350 with about 35k miles back in 2019. What a car. Zero problems. It's fast and comfortable. She loves it. I wish I had one!

@@brianpullen5950 I didn't purchase that one. It looked very nice in the pics, but once I test drove it, it clearly had some issues. Even for that year, it was beautiful on the inside. But I did end up purchasing a 2009 Lexus RX 350 with 130G. GORGEOUS! I love, love it! It came with the luxury package. I paid around 10g for it at a dealership, which is amazing for this area. I had a 2016 Honda CRV and my Lexus is nicer than the Honda. I hate saying never, but if at all possible, I will never own anything other than a Lexus. Even this 2009 is better than all the newer vehicles I test drove. They are worth every penny. But you gotta make sure the previous owner/'s took care of that engine. It took me awhile, but she was definitely worth the wait. Best of luck to you!
So glad I found you. Your content is Gold.
Love your channel, thanks for all the valuable information
Thank you! IS and LS were revelations. Potentially saved me money.
I second the “investment” comment! I bought a 4Runner brand new off the lot and when I went to trade in, the dealership paid MORE than the MSRP sticker price (which I didn’t even pay full MSRP due to incentives at the time of purchase)! After that, I knew I would be a FOREVER Toyota/Lexus owner!
If you traded anytime in the last year it has a lot to do with the uptake in the prices of used vehicles. Most dealerships are getting more for used vehicles than they are for new for the last year or so.
I’ve been lookin really hard at the 2010-2015 RX350 and you just helped me make my decision, I’ve always owned trucks and suvs but I’m looking for a daily that I can carry stuff in and it really checks off every box for me
Thank you! You helped me avoid the bad ones. Subscribed!
This video was incredibly informative and helped me figure out exactly which Lexus I'll be purchasing soon. I'm leaning towards the IS350 and I'm excited to have done my homework on Lexus. : )
Thanks for another great video AMD, you’re my go-to resource for Lexus advice. God bless
My father in the UK bought a Lexus IS200 15 years ago. It is still uncanny how reliable it is! Even the exhaust system is original and it's 22 years old with 120,000 miles. Interior still looks new. Bumpers are scuffed but other than that it just goes and goes. Engine is still so smooth.
Very informative video! 2011 Lexus LS460 owner here, been in a flood and pretty certain the mileage has been fiddled with and no service history. Dispute it being a bad buy, it was very cheap & drives so lovely! Lexus are on their own level, many times better than the German cars which is supposed to be good, they aren’t even close!
My 2011 IS350 has 201k on it and not one issue with it. Unreal car! It's quick looks good, and it's built so well. Love lexus
Finally , great informative video , as i am planning to buy a used rx350 within a Week this video is a gem 💎 for me 🙏
Love my 2015 RX 350 purchased in Jan 2022 - runs perfect - also got a 5 year maintenance & extended warranty for only $500.
@jacksonj3082 From where did you get extended warranty for $500?
Thanks for awareness , you saved my time and money.
I’ve said this over and over again. They greatest Lexus ever made were the 1996-2006 LS400 and 430 respectively.
You should do an excel spread sheet with all your information provided and make it available for download . It would be awesome your content is very neutral considering you work with Toyota . Good content . Lexus Lx / Land-cruiser are the best suv.
I got a Es 350 Lexus 2009, runs like a champ.
The GS450h in 2013 was a big improvement over previous year models. It could get 30 MPG and do 0-60 MPH in 5.4 seconds.
I went to a Lexus dealer awhile ago and checked the IS 300. I’m thinking of getting one. Thank you for this video. I will just look on IS 350 2019-2021 . Im from Cerritos California.❤❤❤
Very informative information video AMD. Thank you for sharing your wisdom with us.
Ahmed. Loved this discussion. Thanks for explaining. Never owned a Lexus but, good to know which to consider and which to avoid.
Hey @TheCarCareNut, I'm a big fan of your informative videos. Thank you for spreading your knowledge and decades long experience with us. I'm kind of an old school, still driving a manual transmission and always try to avoid all those modern cars equiped with loads of technologies and sensors. My ask is, is it a good idea to buy an accident free Lexus RX400h (2008) or RX450h (2010) with 180000+ km on the clock in 2023?
Once again great vid CCN.
I own a GS 300 and it has been the best used car I ever had, both in comfort and reliability. Yes it has the GDI engine and it will some day fail. What I do to prolong the problem is to use injection cleaner every 1000 miles and only use gasoline with at least 5% ethanol. From summer 2021 our 95 gasoline in Sweden contains 10% ethanol by default. I sometimes fill up with extra ethanol up to 15% of a full tank and the car is not complaining. So far the car has about 80 000 miles and running great. Thank you for all the great information about the models. =)
I own one also...year 2000..minor issues, but the car runs great..Over 200,000 miles and still going strong
2000 GS 300 . No turbo . Easy engine to work on . I 6 3.0 L is an animal , cast iron block
We have a ‘98 GS 300 and it has 330k. We put non-ethanol in it and it runs great.
Picked up a 2014 is350 AWD and with every drive I love it more, it’s unbelievable. Even being a 2014 it has features that 2021 lack or have just introduced.
Yes, this is exactly the video I wanted to see from a Toyota expert! Thank you!
Great content, Matt. Thanks for sharing your expertise. I have a 2021 RX 350 with 40K km / 25K miles (recently bought), and an issue with the transmission. It feels the 8-speed upshifts too high when in Eco or Normal mode, not a major concern but not an expected Lexus experience. However, when slowing down or breaking there is a jerky shifting from either 2nd to 1st or 3rd to 2nd gear. Would you have any advice, i.e. resetting transmission memory? My 2011 Rx is buttery-smooth. Just would like to hear your opinion before taking the car to the dealership and be told this is normal... Thanks in advance!
I had the same problem sometimes the gear shift was rough. When coming to a stop it jerked like it hard gear change down. I took it to the dealer they changed transmission fluid nothing changed. We did scans no error codes were found. After many months and $ some body told me to change the ecu. I bought a used one and this solved the problem
Great video! I loved what you had to say about my LS430! It's almost 20 years old, and is still the nicest, best riding and QUIET car I've ever owned. I plan on keeping it until the wheels fall off! lol My wife has an RX350 she loves too.
Love the detailed info! Would be great if you add more Lexus content in the future. Keep it up
This guy is really good at these videos and he’s very knowledgeable.
One of the best videos I have ever had the pleasure to watch, you are the reason why u tube was invented, thanks again❤
I have a 2009 Avalon and 2005 ES330 both in the low 80,000 mile range. The last I checked the ES is worth the same money as the Avalon. The 3.3 in the ES is quieter than the 3.5 in the Avalon. However I like the fact that the 3.5 has a timing chain whereas the 3.3 has a belt. The Avalon get amazing fuel economy but the cabin is rather noisy. The ES is a great car to take on trips. It uses a bit more fuel but is so comfortable.
This was very much needed. Thank you!
Excellent advice! Spot on. Thanks
I can't believe the first generation IS300's were left out! Had the lovely 2JZ (sadly non turbo) but same crank/block! That paired with a timeless body style and great interior (given you don't have the sticky dash).
One of the best looking sedans of all time along with the 3rd gen Acura TL that era was awesome
@@kevinconroy6606nope that Acura mad ugly
I watched this video hoping he would talk about the IS300 since I’m looking to buy a 2016 one….
Speaking of the sticky dash, I had mine replaced. Still holding on to my 2003 model. It's still in pristine condition
1999-2004 is300 imo is the second best Lexus after the LFA.
The fact that he left it out of this video is crazy.
Shame they didn’t really come in manual.
Factory Manual with the 2JZ-GTE from factory and Lexus would of had the best sedan on the market.
I LOVE my '17 ES350. I enjoy doing my own maintenance, and your channel has taken away the anxiety of tackling the tougher jobs i.e. spark plugs and "sealed" transmission fluid changes. Thank you for your excellent videos!
Is the 2017 es350 a hybrid ? .. I really want to get the 2016 or 2017 models but I am not sure if they are hybrids
I love my ES350, 2015 Lexus. All it does is run. It's now 2022 and think this the best car I have ever owned. This car stays primarily in florida. Has never seen snow. 27,800 mi. I'm 72 years old and think this car will out last me. I hope. You didn't mention the ES 350. I wish you had commented on them.
Greetings AMD, just bought '04 ES 330 with 68K, with no rust and am thrilled with it. My sister ('04 LS 430) and son ('11 ES 350) convinced my better half to look for a Lexus and fortunately after many months and test drives we found this gem. Many thanks for your expertise/videos. I'll do basic DIY maintenance but will leave the deep dives to our dealership mechanics. Besides your channel (1st on my list) any other Lexus forums/channels that you'd recommend?
Bought 2012 LS 460 L without air suspension and without all-wheel drive. It's been 2 years 160,000 miles nothing but oil changes... love this car. Had plenty of Jags and Benzs.
Excellent video as always! Thanks guy!
I bought a 2012 Lexus LS460 at the beginning of August, and I replaced the front rotors and pads (bought at the Lexus dealership). They were not a "small fortune". I spent around $380 and these are surprisingly huge rotors and pads. I had to check online to be sure they weren't the Brembo kit (they aren't) since they were so large, and dual piston, fixed calipers. Maybe his idea of a small fortune is a bit different than mine. I'd consider pads and rotors on an AMG CL65 or S63 to be a small fortune, at around $2,000. Not the Lexus. Last week I changed both engine air filters, and the cabin air filter. I think the total was around 50 bux at the Toyota dealership (it was closer at the time, and the parts I replaced said Toyota anyways). My oil change wasn't too bad, maybe 85 to 90 bux for 10 quarts of full synthetic Mobil 1, and a Percolator filter (not the cheaper one). I do expect the control arms to be pricey, but instead of getting the Lexus ones at $500 each, it was recommended to get the Mevotech set, which are comparable to OEM, but you can get them all for that price, which is a huge savings. Also, all LS460s don't come with air suspension. I believe it's standard on the 460L as well as the LS600h. The LS460 base has regular suspension, unless you get a less common model that has a different description--a comfort package or something, and it will have the suspension setting button on the bezel to the left of the shifter.
I’m interested in buying one of the same year, have you experienced any other problems with your car and do you have to pay a luxury tax on it?
I really fancied the 460 long wheelbase, I hear the air suspension is a fortune, so maybe find one that’s just had a replacement??
So the brakes are a problem too? Anything else I should look out for??
Thanks.
I have a 2012 ls 460L and it does not have air suspension or all-wheel drive.
@@brokersopen1664 wow 🤷♂️
There seems to be no hard fixed rule.
I find it strange for instance a lot of the LS600HL AWD cars have the badging missing off the back re the ‘AWD’ badging, why would you not claim to state such a significant omission.
Some have them on some don’t - weird.
@@dibaz1 Badges muddy up the timeless, classy design Lexus goes for. My RX is AWD and there isn’t any badge on it except RX450H.
thank you for this! I can't afford a brand new one but am getting older and would like a smooth quiet operator. This helps so much I took notes on the good and the bad to keep an eye out someday for just the right one!
Because of the direct injection, I opt for old cars that are much more accessible and easier to repair myself. And with the modern car because of all those unnecessary gadgets, a lot can break and unaffordable repairs and errors that are almost undetectable, so that a lot is replaced "on the gamble" and in the case of misgambling, it is charged with a nice story.
@@henkholdingastate Skyactiv in my Mazda6 is direct injection. 147k miles and still going strong.

ES 300,330 - all except 2002-2006. 2nd best after LS430

Your videos are the best. THANK YOU.
Owned a 2007 LS 460 and I loved this car. I took it to 225000 km and essentially all I had to do was your usual maintenance. Water pump, rear struts, brakes. The car was easy to work on and would agree the brakes were not great on the car as I did have pulsation issues with it. Mine had the rear struts and was not expensive to fix, even though my car had the rear reclining seats it still was not terrible job to do. I would always get under 8 litres per 100 or 31 MPG (Imp Gal) on the highway. I live in Canada and with good winter tires traction was not an issue as long as you had good winter tires. I would not agree with his assessment except the brakes were a little disappointing and you had to use premium fuel. This car was a dream and would buy one again.
My LS460 is still going strong. The only thing which I expect to go soon is the control arms bushings and the air suspension. My only real complaint is the door trim paint starting to peel and Lexus’s decision to use a bad quality interior sticky dash plastic. I also agree with the brakes not being the best even though the technology is superior. Otherwise the car is an absolute tank and in Australia we only got the fully optioned models and ai love radar cruise control and the auto side and rear blinds. It’s gonna be hard to upgrade from this car because it’s almost perfect.
I’ve owned my 04 SC430 with 140K miles for 13 years. It has been Uber reliable. I’ve never done anything but basic maintenance to it. It has been one of the most reliable car I’ve ever owned.
What other cars have you owned that were as Reliable as the Lexus ?
Owned 3 of is250s since it was so great for the budget and I had to drive far due to work, 0 issues, most of them over 150k miles, never did q carbon clean up. Just regular maintenance, never topped off oil between 4-5k intervals...
I'm planning to buy one in 2024 for 14.5k USD. 100k miles. Would you recommend it?
Just got an ES330 2005 for my wife and my God everything still works!!! Even the rear windscreen shade. It's so quiet and handles like a cloud. They don't make them like they used to.

My Dashboard and doors panels have been replaced free by Lexus. I replaced the radio head with a Phoenix automotive PX6 10.2 Tesla style and absolutely love it! My taillights are now Spec-D taillights and Depo headlights. My exhaust system is a INVIDIA complete system. I'm Rolling on Vossen C2V 20 inch wheels MPS4S tires with BC coilovers. Ive added Megan Racing sway bars super pro adjustable endlinks and Figs polly LCA bushings. Adjustable SPC ball joints and rear adjustable control arms. I absolutely love this car! Not taking anything away from your post - just thought that typo was hilarious.
Thank you, AMD! This video is a real gem 💎. You provided me with all the information I needed to make a very important decision.
This is a great channel. Informative and entertaining. I bought my first foreign car almost two years ago - 2013 RX350. I can’t see myself buying anything else now.
Maybe in many years you will be interested in a Hybrid for your next purchase. I just took delivery of a new Sienna and it’s fantastic 👌
Very informative video for current or prospective Lexis enthusiasts. As a current ES 300 (2002) and ES 330 (2005) owner you are so correct. They are great cars, and I plan to keep driving them for another 10-20 years.
I really enjoy your insight and professional information.
@The Car Care Nut: Thanks for another great video. I really enjoy listening to your expertise. Question: To become a Lexus Master Technician, do you have to be the best of the best Toyota Technician first? Is there a certification process to work for Lexus above and beyond with Toyota?
Hi! Becoming a Lexus technician you will share many of the core classes and education however as you reach the higher levels of certifications there are many model specific courses that are different and on the Toyota side there’s actually more training required especially on the hybrid side and PHEV side. So if anything it’s the opposite. It’s a smoother transition from Toyota into Lexus than Lexus into Toyota
@@TheCarCareNut I posted a question for you in the comment section of this video regarding a 2018, IS300 AWD with 15K miles on it, no undercoating , includes a luxury package, selling at a local Toyota dealer here in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada for $40,000 cdn. What’s your thoughts or advice on this vehicle?
Incredible video! I sold my 2006 Land Cruiser and for the same price found a beautiful 2014 RX 350...I have never enjoyed a car more!
Hi Car Care nut. After watching this and a few other videos you have done covering the LS 460 I'm convinced I don't need that expensive hassle ever though it's a beautiful car. I'm now looking at the GS 350 as it seems more practical. I drove a friends and I love it. I'll be looking for someting around $20K so I obviously won't be buying a late model. Probably a 13/14 with 100K + miles on it to find one in my price range. By any chance do you have a video on common problems & solutions for the GS? Any perticular years to avoid or target? Is the AWD version just adding complexity & problems? I have a F350 & a Tahoe both 4WD so i wont be intentionally going out in the snow with the Lexus so my thought is to find a RWD version. Any thoughts? Thanks!
Thank you Sir, I was curious about the HS250h . You have answered my question perfectly
I’m glad you didn’t speak a word about the second generation GS line. Must mean it’s the one to buy period lol. I love the info 👍🏼 and couldn’t agree more with what you have said.
Another great video! So much information. Thanks for sharing your extensive knowledge. I have though about buying an older Lexus. Now I could do it with wisdom!
Great video. Very informative. Thank you! )
Very informative. I'm in the machine tool industry as a tech, and I can honestly tell you are speaking from a service point of view. I appreciate the honest opinion. I was seriously thinking of an LS460, but you set my path straight. I don't want to take the chance. Thank you.
What is your opinion of the ES300h compared to reliability of the other models?
