    Hey Scotty, I'm a female and it's my experience that Mechanics can see a "sucker" from a mile away, every time I go in even if it's a simple oil change, watching you, I get to by-pass all that, I can't tell you how much you've helped me, because THAT would a Long post! Hi Hoober, if you do need an inexpensive oil change, last minute or just don't have the time to do it yourself, try taking your car to Walmart for an oil change. As a female mechanic, I am still surprised at many people's reactions when I show up to deal with whatever chariot of theirs, is giving them grief. Most people are skeptical at first, but once I talk to them and explain what I will be doing and why, they often open up and start telling me all sorts of horror stories of how they were previously scammed by one grease monkey or another. It infuriates me to no end, because any good mechanic is in high demand, so there is NEVER any reason to scam clients just to squeeze out a few extra bucks.
      When I began to be in demand, I simply raised my rates, and my clients were (and still are) more than happy to pay the extra, since they know they will get quality work from me. I am grateful for Scotty's vids, since most new clients are doubting clients, so they often want to question my decisions... So, whenever I can, I will refer them to Scotty's vids, so they can educate themselves and better understand my actions!
      As much as some say that equality has made leaps and bounds forward, I am still challenged by the occasional partsman when i've had to order something required for an unusual or customized repair. It never ceases to amaze me just how often parts people will try to pull a fast one, despite the fact that I have earned a good name as a roadside/ mobile mechanic in town. The best defence: educate yourself by watching more Scotty Channel!! (I like to call it, Scotty's nube tube)

    Love it... but don't $270 love it.
    I can change the cartridge without much mess. There's a 3/8" center cap to take off, plug a drain tube in (comes with most cartridge kits), then you remove the cartridge housing... often cleaner than spin-on as you're draining most the oil.

    I like that filter converter kit, but the only real problem I can see is that oil filters are often in a weird spot and the filter "converter" may be too large and not be able to fit as I've seen instances where you might have only about 3 inches between the bottom of the filter and something else, so it may have limited use, but a good idea regardless. Plus some cars have the oil filter on the bottom of the vehicle. So adding something like that may make it too long, risk getting bent or broken and then you have bigger problems.
    For paint, I think it may depend. I had to get some touch up paint for my Camry to fix a small rock chip, and being that it's only 2 years old and the Celestial Silver color (which is a silverish blue) it's hard to find that paint color (even though that color has been out now for 5 years since the most recent generation came out in 2018 in the US). If you have an older car, then some of those paints will probably work fine, as they will likely be the best you can get, but for newer cars, I would try to get the OEM paint first.

    My way of not making a mess from the oil filter is as this. First warm up vehicle. Next pan under filter. Use 16 penny nail to pucture filter. Go inside watch T.V. for half hour or so. Remove filter And install new filter. Don't forget to apply small amount of oil to the rubber gasket at the top of the filter. Reposition drain pan. Remove oil pan drain nut. Go watch T.V. again for half hour or so. Reinstall oil pan drain nut. Fill crank case with oil. Use funnel to put old oil back into now empty oil bottles. Return used oil to parts depot.

    Scotty you should follow your own advise. There is no way to tell how much refrigerant is in there. The only correct way to do it is to get a set of guages that measure both sides, drain the system of refrigerant and fill it to the factory load that's listed under the hood.
    You won't know if there's a problem with the AC system unless you measure temps on both sides and do a vaccum test to see if there are any leaks.

    Yea, one can go and simply fill up their a/c system as described here but the correct procedure is to, first, empty the system to a vacuum for at least 10 minutes (to dry the system out as water is damaging), check and repair leaks, and then place the correct, clean a/c refrigerant into the system, with the correct amount of a/c oil.
    Not applying the vacuum can be bad if you have water in your system, very bad.

    Spot on about the Baxter oil filter conversion unit. A little pricey but worth it. Built like a solid piece of steel. My mechanic had to do it for me because the Toyota dealer put the cartridge filter on so tight I could not get if off but I took it to a mechanic to get the plastic garbage off and install the Baxter unit. Really simple to do but like I said but the Toyota housing was really overtightened, On an 18 Rav4. Love it. Do it!! You won't regret it.

      That will not work on my 2012 Camry, that stupid adapter thing is so long that the oil filter would actually be dragging the ground. The cartridge filter is just not that big of a deal to me, they work fine.

    • @louisstennes3
      @louisstennes3 2 года назад +1

      @@markkauffman6184 I know what you mean. The model they make for the RAV4 enables you to use a filter length that when installed cannot be seen and doesn't protrude at all. Of course you have to use a shorter filter but it seems to work fine. Nothing wrong with the original cartridge system but if you don't do your own oil changes you are trusting someone to install them without over tightening, which happened to me.(it was a Toyota dealer too, that's what really P...ed me off.

    So as someone who spent 6yrs in the automotive industry you do not want to use those emergency AC refills without research. Not all cars use the same refrigerant. Some are 1234yf and some are 134yf. You do not want to mix refrigerant. Check your manual before putting one of those in and make sure it matches. We have to have two separate AC machines for both types of refrigerant.
