Snares are too frequent.
1:45 The forest burns as the wild life trying to flee many lose their lives. Alex Yard and knuckles touches on this tho.
this should've been emphasized more tbh the music is still too cheery for the act I kinda hate this track for this it seems insensitive to what's happening

Check out Alex Yard & Knuckles. You'll like that.
I've been toying around with the sound chip and some…stuff. Squeezed a PSG into the empty register space at 0xBE on the OPL3; this is OPN2, derivative of OPNA (which has a much more complex PSG not present in the OPN2). Got space in there to add polyphony per channel, made it 6-operator, and made it possible to configure any operator algorithm mathematically possible (I even drew up a circuit of muxes to do that in hard IP). Then: I put the wavetable synthesis (OPL4) down in the register space (where it is on the YM278), added one more register space (0x200 wide) down from there for a stripped (no ADPCM, no timers) and extended (4-note per-channel polyphony, infinitely-configurable 4-op) OPNA; a FamiTracker synthesizer (which is exactly what it sounds like); and a quad-sid.
Sonic 3 was where I started.

When I played Sonic 3 as a kid, I always wondered what made Angel Island Act 2's theme more sombre than the act 1 version. It turns out that it is in minor, specifically c-minor! I am not surprised why this great track is one of the highlights of the S3&K OST.
Hey, BG! Glad to see you here
It's in E and A minor, you can take it from C minor but that's not what it actually is.
@@shay_playz Actually, it is indeed in C minor, as proven by the bass.

Someone gave the composer the 8-Bit Square, and said "Go Crazy".
And he did. It's amazing.
I was actually surprised to find out that a lot of the "square wave" sounds were actually produced by the FM channels. Neat!
Yeah channel 1 and 2 do have an almost square wave sound to them at times, definitely sounds better than anything a PSG channel can make tho

Perfectly illustrated just how underutilized the depth of sound on the megadrive was compared to the people working on Sonic 3 and why it sticks out as one of the musical masterpieces from that console.

I wish i could compose music as well as this. Everything is so geniusly implement that it does not feel out of place at all. The melody, the bass, how can one get to such a point of mastery in composing music... It is sad that nobody is entirely sure who composed any of this music so i can not praise the author as much as i'd want to. This composition is literally perfect in every way and i cannot even comprehend how can a person sit down and just write a song this amazing. Not many will ever get this skillfull, oh no they wont, and if a individual can get so high that it is super rare to get close to his skill level... That's a thing nobody can take away from you.
3:20 Gotta dig that baseline!
I thoroughly enjoyed Sonic the Hedgehog songs, and recently gravitated towards this song. Took me a long while to realize this is probably the best song in S3. From seeing it deconstructed, see each channel's usage, to the totality of this amazing track is so cool. It's like we're slowly seeing it come alive in real time. Thanks for putting this together.
It's one of the best examples of the act transition too imo. It transforms with what's happening in the zone, but still sounds familiar. Giving you a weird mix of emotions as you play.
why do sonics bass lines always have to go so hard
I have no idea bro but I love it

TUME TO SAVE THE FEKKIN ISLAND
Most of the songs in the Sonic 3 franchise are sad and somber songs like: Endless mine, Azure Lake, Angel Island act 2 and Desert Palace
represent that
Channels 1 & 2 sound really close to the PSGs.
Also, I'm pretty sure that 1:30 is the same lead from Green Hill.
Many Sonic music was heavily inspired in the first 2 games
Ya they probably reused sound samples at certain points.
@@JNSStudios Especially in Beta of Sonic 3
@@JNSStudios nope, they are not samples
JNS Studios samples would be like the drums and clips of Michael Jackson saying “Go!” “Woo!” “Yeah!” and “Come on!”, which are always under the DAC in these videos, which means Digital Audio Converter. What you’re thinking of is patches, which is the term for the settings that make a specific sound with synthesizers
2:27 Why does it sound like they forgot to use the fine tune command on PSG1 for this section? It seems this is the only occurrence of deconstructive wave interference throughout the piece, and feels very unintentional.
For those not versed in chiptune: The fine tune is used in this specific situation to add an echoey sound (it’s not how it makes the actual echo tho, those are made by using channel pattern delay). It basically enhances the echo effect overall and also provides a way to avoid deconstructive wave interference.
Wow this should be my ringtone
I do just love how the PSG in the second bit are ever-so-slightly off key so it creates a cool effect.
2:05 suddenly 8-bit Sonic 3
1:44 makes me think that the music is telling a story:
the island is burning and can't do anything about it, no matter what you do, the jungle will burn until there is nothing left... But 1:58 reassures that and that you can and WILL save the island
3:07 But tails returns and travels everywhere and finds all the chaos emeralds and now angel island is saved and now eggman's gonna get it
I never used to like this song compared to act 1. But now that I- have a better understanding of theming, I have a better appreciation for it. It sounds more dangerous, and like it's on fire. I think subconsciously, it filled me with the low-key dread that was coming for the game. Especially towards the end of the track where there's an air of desperation. The drums feel more aggressive too. Kinda like they're marching you forward, rather than taking time to kick back and relax.
1:08Listen to this on the phone
1:31 Only now I noticed that this is the same instrument used in green hill zone's theme
