I can't be alone in thinking that it was probably this game's OST that gave me an appreciation for bass? So many of the basslines in this game are amazing.
I'm starting to realize my love for funk, disco, jazz, r&b, and hip hop can he solely attributed to this game. Played this a TON in my formative years.
I was just thinking this. NES games also had awesome bass lines.
You’re amongst friends and definitely not alone in thinking that! Sonic 3, 2 & 1 have some amazing bass parts
Agreed
same, sonic games and mother games had amazing Bass lines
who else hums the missing parts?
almost thought I was the only one for a second, haha
me
Who doesn't lmao
Your not the only one bruh 😁
Me
the bass is probably the coolest bit
that and the DAC is oh so good
For me, Channel 3 and 4.

Let’s not say anything bad
I know act 2's arrangement is widely considered to be one of the best (if not the best) tunes in the game, but I truly adore this one as well. The two together are my favorite themes in all of classic Sonic.
I actually prefer the hip-hop jazziness of the first act, myself!
Act I sets up the melodic and rhythmic ideas Act II builds on - the two can't exist separately from each other. The moment the Act II theme drops in has such weight and _oomph_ because it was given a solid setup.
Act I doggypaddles, so Act II can highdive.
I like Act 1 more. It's just so funky. Though Act 2 has this excellent Latin feel.
@Vincent Wisehoon Which is shocking because as water levels go I thought Hydrocity wasn't that bad. Of course I also played the first Sonic when I was 3 so I was thrown into the deep end.
i never actually noticed the bass straight up switches samples in the middle of the song, thats sick
Yes sir! 5- string fingerstyle- (popping on the off-beat) to some funky slap in the chorus
that messed with me when I realized it because I'm using this video as a guide for my recreation of the song

2:52 feels like a inner city at night with cats jumping from the trash
Yo this is a year late but I used to think this exact thing when I was little! I pictured cats in an alley way coming out at night being badasses next to graffiti walls. I wrote cringey lyrics to it when I was like 5 haha. I miss those days so much
@@lynxvsjackalope1149 Lol that sounds like me when I was 5 😂
@@lynxvsjackalope1149 I know I'm 3 months late but I'd personally love to see those lyrics, though I assume they've been lost to time by now.
Cats jumping off the trash 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Of all the songs I've seen deconstructed so far, I think that this one has the most complex interplay happening between the different musical layers. Listening to this gives me a whole new appreciation for the completed piece.
I seriously never noticed the square waves my entire life, and now my ears are fixated on them. This is way more complex than I would have guessed
@@PartyThrasher118 same here. Absolutely awesome how complex it is.
I can’t unhear those now, incredible
@@jerdure
One of the few times I genuinely don't wanna unhear it. It's literally music to my ears!
Lots of "hot potato" between the channels in this song, where in this case the "hot potato" is the melody.
I'm totally resonating with your last sentence! Thank you!
3:29 honestly when you get to this part it makes me think of a pause menu screen
Everyone talks about Channel 1 and DAC, but they forget PSG 3...
PSG 3 is the third of the bass triplets. It's so good.
Paris Saint Germain?? Neymar is here to stay!
@@Aj-me8mo Neymar is brazilian.
@@mixdecoisas9193 duhh I know that but he plays for P$G !
Yes, PSG3 is the hi-hat set to the drums (DAC)
Welp, goodbye concentration and hello next few hours of being massively distracted. So good.
It's interesting how this forms a build-up that makes the full track hit way harder than it normally does
The good thing about these videos is that you start hearing sounds you didn't hear before in the track. And that's soooooo cool
Sonic had so many funky basslines that carried the songs. DKC had a lot of similar songs where they'd let the bass kind of guide the tempo and direction of the music.
That's because Michael Jackson wrote all the music for sonic and many other genesys games
@@kg4boj what other games? Also I don't think micheal wrote the ones we know. But his version was deleted but I think some parts he could have helped with and influenced. Or maybe his team
@@kg4bojthis was not MJ believe it or not
@toters2724 Actually he did. Yuji Naka himself admitted it although Jackson was left out of the credits because he was busy paying off lawsuits for all those little boys he molested.
@@kg4boj those were for CNZ, ICZ, LBZ, Competition, Credits, Miniboss and Knuckles and nothing else as far as I'm aware

DOC! C'MON MAN!
Wish more people would make songs and remixes using the Genesis soundboard like they do with the SNES'. Genesis has some really great drums and bass.
Well, the Genesis used a DAC (Which stands for Digital-to-Analogue Converter), so all of the drum sounds were pretty much exclusive to each game. Sonic 1 & 2 used a lot of the same samples IIRC, but yeah.
@@Nyaalexifr
Hydrocity Act 1 is the embodiment of "Cowabunga!" Sounds like music that fits TMNT (the first show back in the 80s)
They don't compose 'em like this anymore! This track is FULL of surprises and it's so nice to hear it deconstructed like this.
It amazing how much those square waves add to this song!
Channels 0, 2 ,3 and 4 are individually completely mess but combined creates something awesome. Composer was really clever by making this most complex song.
That is literally Michael Jackson
@@reallyblue he had nothing to with this
"It's HYDROCITY!"
"It's HYDRO CITY!"
sad news… sonic origins files say hydro_city… 😔
sad day for us all
I like when they all go "Bap bap badap bap!" together at 8:29.
I think hearing those PSGs alone really gives it that Master System/Game Gear vibe.
DAC and Channel 1 in the pocket baby... damn that's tight!
I know MJ was part of the composition process for the songs in S3. It really shows on the more funky tracks.
EDIT: And then PSG 3 comes in... holy hell
Im deeply sorry but that first part damn near had me kill the turtles
this one want MJ
this wasn't mj
Wikipedia article on Sonic 3 quotes composer Cirocco Jones as saying that he, MJ, and Brad Buxer worked on the music from “levels 2 and 3”, which equates to Hydrocity and Marble Garden.
this song was composed by sega, having distinct act 2 theme and being in sonic mania are some telling signs as MJ's songs have pretty lazy act 2 remixes and sega doesn't have the rights to them.
Words can't express how much i love this
1:53 8-Bit Version
2:12 doom theme?
Nice
I can totally imagine 2:49 being used in some sort of underground setting. At things progress, it would turn into 3:47.
Ik I'm late but thats a neat idea
an underground setting... like some kind of flooded city?
@@FirstnameLastname-sb3hj You know what, that's fair. I almost forgot Hydrocity was underground. I was thinking like a cave system or something.
@@kalebadvent so like hydrocity but with no water

I was just listening to the original video of this one. Coincedence 🤔. I do like how you gave the channels some more solo time and added more channels to become solo, if you get what I mean.
Rereading my comment hurts my brain, but I have no other way of saying it. :p
It doesn't feel rushed. The deconstructed video feels rushed so alot of the parts we hear now were dropped. Alot of the channels should be paired for it to make sense
I think pretty much all of us can admit that this is an absolute BOP.
You are so amazing. I was planning on doing a sort of remake of this song. And this will help tremendously, same goes for act 2. You need to do more like this!
...Even though you most likely not get this...
It's awesome how much juice they manage to get out of the PSG Channels... They add so much...
Wonderful deconstruction! You can literally see the vibrato on Channels 0 and 2. You can also see the limiting/compression at work on Channel 1 and the DAC.
I will never think of music the same way again.
Gotta love how it all comes together
Wow, two of my favorite songs from S3&K back-to-back? I love it!
Channel 3 and 4 are my favorites, with channel 1 and dac combo as close second
I love these remades of your deconstructions in oscilloscope!
1.34 will forever be my favourite part. Makes me feel like doing the Michael Jackson move where he goes on the tips of his toes
The people who made these tracks were WAY ahead of their time! They really knew how to make some stank synth riffs.
When you describe it as stank it doesnt sound like youre complimenting it
You know, MJ did the soundtrack but was uncredited
@@BeachBear64 Hydrocity wasn't one of MJ's tracks
@@TempoKong the main commenter said these tracks, not specifically hydrocity. So I meant that the soundtrack in general was done by MJ.
@@BeachBear64 He did a minority of the tracks. In fact, Bruxer did most of the work on the 3 stage tracks they worked on.

This one be groovin'! I like how the PSG channels alone are a jam. And does anyone else feel the FUNK from the bass channel?! Thought I was listening to ToeJam and Earl for a second there.
Surprised to see no one talking about PSG 0 and PSG 1
Though, understandable with the mere existence of Channel 1 and DAC + PSG 3
These deconstructions are great focus music for work
You know I'm happy Hydrocity replaced labyrinth zone from being in the stand are water level
Dayumn, the swing on this is so addictive
3:47 sounds like it belongs in ToeJam & Earl
Plot twist: they used sounds that make us remind of the water. And in sonic mania they used the only music. But clean
I just noticed channel 2 makes that effect on channel 0.
With just a 10ms* delay!
*I don't know the actual delay, I just thought it was that long.
Also, the song at half the speed hears like it is on 3/3 or 3/4

Love your videos Carpathia 808! You got me motivated to try deconstructions of mega drive music. I found a program called RYMcast. Have you tried that one?
He usually uses foobar2000
Yeah I saw his tutorial on it. I just found that program as you can't run foobar extensions on Mac.

0:56 channel 3 and 4 are def my favourite
Can you do Flying Battery Act 2 (Prototype)?it sounds like the Mania remix

Can you do emerald hill?
He already did
I think Thomas Strohi means an Oscilloscope Deconstruction video, not a Deconstructed video.
It's all fun and games until the drowning theme kicks in.
You thought I wasn't gonna mention the bass and/or drums, weren't you?
After listening to each channel of this song isolated, as well as countless other Sonic songs on your channel, I have only one question. How has no one found out who the composer is yet? I’m 90% sure that this is Jun Senoue, with numerous similar instruments being used in 3D Blast later on down the line, not to mention that the trumpets are used in the Continue Screen music in this same game. Am I just crazy or did I actually figure it out?
just a great song

Can you deconstruct Columns 3 from Sega Genesis?

U using foobar2000? I resampled S&K like that
yes
Strong Seinfeld vibes at 3.30
how do you make the oscilloscopes split into channels on foobar2000?
There is a plugin on the foobar2000 website that reads several video game music, the Genesis being included. There is a video somewhere on this user's channel page about how to use it. It's from their channel called "Tutorials and More", I think.
PSG 0 and 1 alone could be a game gear song

By getting the Genesis music file for this from the game itself or dowoading it from a Genesis music archive.
