I am 73 yrs old and not at all tech minded, following your excellent Instructions I have just replaced the keyboard on my laptop. I was quoted $90 from the tech store, purchased a keyboard on e-bay for $20 so have saved $70. Thank you so much xx
This may have been "old hat" to you, but for me it was a new experience. You made it look easy, and gave me the confidence to try this repair myself, rather than the much more expensive option of replacing the whole darn laptop. Thank you.
This keyboard is so easily broken. If you so much as lift a key up even slightly, it clicks out of place and never feels right again no matter how hard you try to fix it. Having to clean between the keys is great fun. This video is a lifesaver.
I was totally baffled regarding the ribbon cable, until I watched this. You saved me from having to replace the keyboard AND LOCKING piece (which is soldered onto the laptop)!! Thank you! Your video REALLY helped me immensely!
This was very useful. On my Toshiba Satellite 650 there some differences (1) There isn't a screw on the back, under the battery (2) there were no tabs on the side of the key board. (3) Most importantly, for the ribbon cable, the ribbon isn't locked/unlocked by pulling the black bar up. Instead slide the white bar that is under the black bar up, in the direction of the base of the screen, after the new ribbon cable is inserted, slide the white bar down, (toward the mouse pad). The old cable released without sliding the white bar up, but the keyboard did not function if the white bar is not pushed down (toward the mouse pad) apparently it grips onto the cable. Also spilled beer on the key board, the new one works fine. Very simple, easy and not expensive to replace. Thanks for the video, I wouldn't have tried without this instruction.
This is very helpful - the exact procedure will vary, my L770D does not need a screw removing from underneath but it's a VERY GOOD idea to remove the battery before you start this. The keyboard is very easy to switch out - the only tricky bit is getting the cable out of the keyboard connector and then reinserting the new keyboard cable into the connector - mine had a white plastic securing tab that came out completely when I removed the cable but with a little fiddling it went back in afterwards. Total time to switch the keyboard after watching the video was about 3 minutes - I've replaced other laptop keyboards before and this is very simple swap out! Thanks!
My local computer shop wanted $125.00 to replace mine. I bought one for $22.65 installed it in about 45min taking my time. Thanks for the vid, great job!
Thank you. I bought a very used laptop, and after much cleaning, decided it would be easier to just replace the keyboard, than try to get the crud out of the (several) non-working keys. I had replaced a keyboard on a ancient Thinkpad, and with your help, this was actually easier! ("Hi!" to the beautiful dog in the reflection, too.)
Thanks to this video, I changed my very own laptop keyboard in 20 minutes with no mishaps. It worked exactly as you said. Thank you for saving me a ton of time and money!!! :)
thanks for posting these. the model i fixed (satellite c655d-s5508) didn't have a screw under the battery, but the instructions were perfectly valid otherwise. thanks again for taking the time!
Thank you so much. I can be a really dumb person when it comes to these things so I head right for RUclips. I really appreciate all the people that upload DIY things for people like me. Thanks again!!!
I had never changed a keyboard before but wanted to try. I have a Satellite L655. I watched several tutorials, some said to loosen or take out the screw in the battery compartment, some didn't. I couldn't see how it was related to the keyboard, so didn't, but then when I was putting the new one in place I loosened it I thought it might give more space or wiggle room. Also in the tutorial videos I watched you are the only one that said to test it before putting it back together, though I had already thought of that, going from past experience fixing things. I had thought getting the ribbon cable in would be the hard part, bu tit just sort of slips in and is held by the black bar. What I found hardest was getting the bevel trim snapped back in flat. I think I am afraid to push down and be too aggressive with things like that.
Thank you so much for posting this video! I banged on my keyboard too hard and the whole thing stopped working. (shocker, lol) But, thanks to you, I ordered a replacement and was able to fix it myself. I'm typing all of this from my new keyboard. Everything is working great. It only took a few minutes too. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!
Hi, it should be similar for most recent toshibas. Try searching for a picture of the S870 replacement keyboard to get an idea of where the mounting screws are. Good luck!
I'm happily typing this comment with my newly installed keyboard! Thanks so much for the video. I never did find a Phillips head screw to remove under the battery which may be why I can't get the trim back on, but maybe I just haven't had enough coffee. :) It took longer than 10 minutes since I had to let the cats out, get coffee after I started, get a damp paper towel to get all the cat barf crumbs out of the edges (the cause of the need for a new keyboard.) It's so nice to be able to type more than one click of a mouse on the screen again. Thanks again for sharing your know-how.
Thanks, first video I've seen on how to do this procedure. Good oral explanation, with mostly adequate videography. Definitely worthy overall of a thumbs-up. Thank you.
Great video! Went on a cleaning frenzy with some windex and sprayed my laptop before I realized what I was doing. Will be replacing on Sunday when I get the new keyboard. Thanks!
Thank you so much. It had become quite difficult to type and work on planning classes when various keys stopped working. THIS WAS AWESOME! I ordered a keyboard on ebay for $15.00 and followed your instructions :-)
Hi. Thanks for this; just ordered a new keyboard fr my 750 and would have taken half the laptop apart to replace it if I hadn't watched. Brilliant. BTW, your dog is just beautiful and I had to go back and watch the last part of the vid again as he/she distracted me :)
Marvellous! Even I as a woman can now boldly go and repair my laptop ;) Just ordered the keyboard. Thanks so much! update: managed to install it and am typing this with it. Thanks so much.
Thank you so much!!! Took maybe 15 minutes and I thought I was going to have to take it in. Bought a keyboard on ebay for $15. Again, thank you!!! Christa
This video was so helpful and complete! Thank you for sharing your knowledge I hope to replace my keyboard this weekend if I can find a replacement board locally! TY!!!
Used this guide for an older L305 - same principals in how it's taken apart, with only small, subtle differences -- most notably in that the clip that locks down the keyboard's ribbon cable doesn't seem to be lockable. I just pulled the ribbon out, and slid the new one in. Also used the opportunity to install a new network card, to upgrade from G to dual-band N. :)
Great vid! My L675 S7108 was a little different. No screw holding the keyboard on in the back. I just took off the trim piece and the four screws. The keyboard came out real easy. Also, no bar holding the ribbon. It slid in to the connector and is held by friction. Super easy fix and the keyboard cost me less than $20 on EBAY.
So I spilled something on my Satellite keyboard last week. Amazingly, it WORKS but the laggy keys are driving me nuts. This is the first video I found - THANK YOU!! - showing how to remove it. Do you think I could remove it and maybe clean it somehow and reinstall? Or if I'd need a new keyboard where is the best place to get one??? Thanks for your help!
Great video! I have been looking at a friends laptop and her space and other keys will randomly type, this occurs even when the computer is left idle, so I believe it may be a faulty keyboard, would you reccomend replacing this? If not only thing left it would be the system board... Thanks again!
Thank you for your video. The problem is is not all Toshiba satellite. Laptop’s are the same. I’m looking for guidance on how to replace my keyboard for a P75-A7200 model. Clearly, they are totally different laptops and built differently. So I will keep looking for someone who has instructions on how to do that.
Thank you so much for this step by step guide to taking out the keyboard and replacing with a new one, I have to admit the ribbon part was the hardest part for me ie disconnecting not reconnecting the new one. I have a bigger problem now as my brother brought this Toshiba laptop home to the UK with him as a present for my Grandaughter off her Great Grandad, as its been out of action for a year its gone back to my Dads name and none of us can remember his password, so were stumped :( Hopefully we will overcome this soon :)
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I spilled wine on my keyboard today and could not figure out how to get it apart to clean underneath. I don't know if this will fix the problem, but I thought it was worth a try before taking it in to a repair shop. Hopefully I didn't fry any components.
Awesome video! i would appreciate a lot if you could tell me where can I buy a toshiba satellite keyboard. I live in Montreal, so if it can be ordered online I think it's at my range
Ok, if I’m correct, the keyboards for the Toshiba laptops are model specific. I’ve had one keyboard put on my laptop many years ago. I watched the tech who did the work, and the procedure was the same as what this guy did in this video. So, can someone tell me where I will find what series my Toshiba is? I’m not referring to the model number, or serial number. I’m referring to the series number, as in Toshiba Satellite (A665, or C302). I don’t know if that letter and those numbers in parentheses are correct numbers, and letters, but that is what I need to know. BUT, before I get a new keyboard, is that the letter/number series I need to know in order to get the keyboard?
Awesome!!! So easy I did it :-) (Got my keyboard via Amazon, it came from LotFancy, Inc. out of So San Fran. I was a little worried about the packaging it arrived in, was marked Fragile but the USPS beat it up quite a bit but it's working so it's all good) Now I can Skype with my husband again and he can watch my Saints play. Who Dat?!!! It's a good day!! Thank you for the help!
On my laptop I don't have that one Phillip head screw in battery compartment... Should I not worry about that screw? This screw is connected to that trim on keyboard? Is this possible for some model? I have L775D-S7222. Can You reply soon... I already have new keyboard and wants to install now.
I was wondering if you could perhaps do a video on graphics cards for this laptop. Im looking into upgrading my Geforce 9000something series to a 660-680 series. I dont want to spend $1000+ on a new laptop that has it. Also looking to upgrade the RAM. If you could do a video on that to I would greatly appreciate it.
This is a great video & will help immensely in replacing keyboard! Thanks so much for posting this!!! Now to find a replacement keyboard for a decent price! :)
Hi how do you know when the ribbon cable is in it's correct position ,i have to replace my keyboard on my l650 this video will save me 70 dollers in labor thanks for doing it
i just removed my keyboard, but i broke the two plastic inserts that the ribbon's lie on, and that you push both sides in to secure the ribbon's connection to the motherboard. is there any where that i could get those plastic inserts? please help!!
hello. im havin a message thats pretty annoying. saying the cooling system is messing up. just wondering if by taking apart the keyboard, i can clean the fan with compressed air. thanks
THANK YOU for this. I spilled some soda on the right side of my keyboard. I blotted what I could but weeks later the keys started sticking over there. Hello, I have a question, My entire keyboard works perfectly but um.. well to shorten it up, One of my keys (bottom right key between Alt and CTRL) got a minor burn because I left something there for to long.. lol it works but it looks horrible now. My question is.. can I just pop that ONE key and replace it with another without doing that whole procedure?
please where i buy screw driver and keyboard thanks.alsp some on here saying screw by battery does not need removing please can u answer why screw by battery needs removing.how much are they keyboards x

hello. im havin a message thats pretty annoying. saying the cooling system is messing up. just wondering if by taking apart the keyboard, i can clean the fan with compressed air. thanks
THANK YOU for this. I spilled some soda on the right side of my keyboard. I blotted what I could but weeks later the keys started sticking over there. I popped the keys off and cleaned and apparently damaged (dented) some of the metal plate underneath. The problems persisted and I popped off the keys again and then lifted part of the two plastic sheets underneath and cleaned between them and let them dry. Put everything back together agaaaain and I'm still having major issues. I was worried I needed a new laptop because I think it's the metal that's damaged but now I'll try a new keyboard instead!
I had an episode of clumsiness involving pepsi just yesterday on my desktop and have a case of the sticky keys too. I'm happy to help, and hope you can get yours fixed!

My laptop keyboard on this computer does not work, it does not react. If I change my keyboard will it work?
My laptop doesn't have a backlit keyboard. do you know if it is possible to replace my keboard with a backlit one

I got the keyboard on ebay. On my computer I needed to remove the screw, but according to some commenters, on their computer it wasn't necessary.
Great thanks
Whats the point of taking the screw under the battery off? No other tutorial has done this.
where can i find a replacement keyboard though?
Just what I needed 99% the same on satellite 650d
Thanks man! Big help, it's working perfectly!
why do you have to take the screw from the back by the battery
Where did you order your new keyboard from?
Why did he remove the screw near the battery? Thanks.
abbyboyone
no idea. I didn't remove it and still did the repair just unscrewing the top screws and trim.
