  • The time has come, I'm splitting my carbon fiber cowling! I'm also working to adding in lights, a night vision camera, and a NACA duct for airflow. The cowling has been one of the most labor intensive projects of Scrappy, but we are making progress!

When properly implemented, a NACA duct allows air to flow into an internal duct, often for cooling purposes, with a minimal disturbance to the flow. The design was originally called a submerged inlet, since it consists of a shallow ramp with curved walls recessed into the exposed surface of a streamlined body, such as an aircraft.
This type of flush inlet generally cannot achieve the larger ram pressures and flow volumes of an external design, and so is rarely used for the jet engine intake application for which it was originally designed, such as the North American YF-93 and Short SB.4 Sherpa. It is, however, common for piston engine and ventilation intakes.

Mike, consider designing the top surface of the plenum with a slight upward angle toward the air inlets when on the ground, the reason for this is to allow the hot air from the engine to escape after shutdown. Most aircraft cowls and plenums trap this hot air at the very top with nowhere to go, and in some cases it'll literally cook the paint if it's hot outside, take a look at some of the older cowlings and there's a good chance you'll see bubbling or discolored paint. Allowing the heated air to naturally flow up and out of the cowling alleviates this problem. It's a lot easier to incorporate on a taildragger, especially one with massive air inlets like this.

16:09 i usually put a thin stainless washer around the screw holes which has been thinned out at the edges (think donut saucer). It's extremely robust. I even crashed my bike twice, and the screw holes didn't rip as they usually do when you have factory or aftermarket CF.
TIP: on the multitool, you can get an old (or new) blade, and cut it, centered, to a thinner profile, then if you twist it in the lock at 90 degrees from the tool, you can use your palm as a rest on the part you cut, and you get extremely precise control over the cut. I mean, surgery grade control. Source: as we all know, these machines came the medical grade bone saws. I actually used a bone saw before i had a multi tool and it worked best in that orientation (because of the half moon blade, look like a saw tooth scythe, i think it's for cutting between ribs or something) so i figured i should try it with the multitool as well, and it does.

I have done this before, of course used width of tape to measure spacing too, using a strip of tape as a template to properly phase drill holes, then tape strips perpendicular.. looked like railroad tracks### (or plaid sometimes)but gave me absolute "visual security" in the process.. what I call "I see what I'm doing before I cut insurance" 🤠👍

I've been watching this build since the first piece of metal was cut from the factory Cub frame. It's hard to believe at this point that there is any factory parts left in this build. Very excited to see this get off the ground for the first time.

You make it look like anyone can do what you do, I think it’s rubbing off and thanks so much for that.
It’s fantastic your expanding into a more in depth videos of the processes of making Scrappy‘s Cowl it’s awesome I’m lovin this Carbon Fiber.
What a great contribution you guys make.
I think it would be great to see in depth videos of the design and mould making, I know I’d save those videos to watch over and over which I do now anyway trying to get a handle on your work.
Hangin out for the next video.

There is no part of any build of yours I've seen that is not simply astounding. Exceptional engineering (I'm an engineer, so I'd know, okay?), phenomenal attention to detail, staggering work ethic, devoted family man, and killer skills in every necessary discipline. Mike, you are THE MAN!! Even though I'm many years older than you, I think you're who I'd like to be when I grow up. Or if, maybe. :)

Mike, if you want smooth curves in parts you're sanding, you need sanding splines. Double-back tape sanding paper to flexible strips - sheet metal, pressboard, composite, whatever. Make long, wide, stiff ones for gentle curves. Make short, narrow, flexy ones for tight curves. Make whatever you need, you'll figure it out.

Mike, the more I watch your videos, the more I'm impressed with you. Genius, I don't think, is an apt description of you. You leave 'genius' in your propwash. Clyde Cessna, Walter Beech, Roy LoPresti and Burt Rutan are all in the same league as you, but you're the leader, I think. You are a maniac, but a pleasure to watch your creativity. I wish you the best in all you do, and I can't wait to see Draco II, but I want too see Scrappy fly first.

If you have a forward looking night vision camera, you could fit two infra red spotlights under your aircraft, one at the back, one at the front, which could be angled such that they would shine ahead of your aircraft and the two lights would coincide (overlap) only when you reach, Say 50 feet AGL. A line on your screen could then show 30,20,10 feet to contact.

When I saw the hot glue. I said to myself "Now you're speaking my language" Then I saw the disclaimer. If I were tasked with building a plane, it would be mostly hot glue.

Sure Glad you are documenting all this. I used to build fiberglass race car bodies back in the 60's and 70's pretty much the same way. (Carbon Fiber came later.) I''ve been trying to teach my Son, the Drag Racer, some body building tricks. I have bought him a lot of tools and tricky stuff, Clecoes, Camlocks, panel clamps, bead rollers... ECT to help him with his latest 1800 HP, 200 MPG Drag Car. Your videos help me explain the processes to him. And I'm an airplane nut as well, so I'm like the guy said, "Watching this as my Saurtday Morning Cartoon/ Entertainment. You ever need to land that thing in North Central Texas come see us. 7TS0 airport is in my back yard. We have a big talent pool of Experimental Plane Builder as Neighbors.

Please either use a shotgun microphone on top of the camera (or external audio recorder), or even better, have Mike wear a body pack transmitter with lavalier microphone on his shirt. The reverb from the hanger as well as he is quite low compared to the music and audio from B-roll / cut scenes is significantly different. I have to turn my system up quite a bit to clearly hear his speech but the music is very loud in comparison. I LOVE THE VIDEOS (other than the mic levels)!!! I VERY much look forward to the weekends so I can catch the new videos. THANK YOU. I tell every engineer, builder, plane guy I see about these videos as it is refreshing to have Mike talk through his ideas and logic behind what he does and why he does it. So much talent, knowledge, and work ethic.

Another great video Mike! Just laying it out there for when Scrappy is up and running. How about you set sights on setting a speed record for electric powered flight? Should fall right into your wheel house with slippery light weight aircraft construction and battery power. Would make a great project and video series and broaden your reach of viewers. Who knows, may lead to a whole new class of aircraft at Reno Races. Love your work and hope to see more of it.
