Hi pals: after trying in vein to get hold of my perfect Macbook x iPad 4k monitor: I just asked Benq to send me one of their PD 4K Displays! Value Apple XDR alternative? What's your perfect work from home monitor?
I’m a professional website designer and I own the PD3220u - the 32” equivalent of this - and it’s brilliant for my use case and business. Colours are accurate, pixels are indistinguishable, and the thunderbolt 3 single cord setup is super convenient.
is it comparable to the retina? I am coming from iMac 27 and will be upgradung my MacBook Pro but do not want to spend a fortune on the 5K display. Thanks.
@@mike_qbik I don't have the iMac 27, but I do have the new iMac 2021, and my MacBook Pro 15" where this monitor is attached to, and I would say it is comparable and can hold its own next to these Apple screens. It could use some extra nits in brightness, but if you're in a enclosed room it's fine.
@@eli.alcaraz Thank you very much Eli for the feedback. I might go with the 27 inch version then. In this price range I am already close to 5k LG UltraFine 27MD5KL . . . so lets see what's left in my budget after getting the MacBook Pro 16 Max :-)

I’m a programmer, and I’ve used everything from a 13” laptop screen to a 21:9 widescreen to a 48” TV (as a dashboard display in a server room), and I agree the ideal size for a desktop monitor is 27”. @@anaszahiri8116 The reason I don’t give a solution as you suggest is because I do not have one, I am not a display manufacturer. If you want 220ppi your best options are LG 5k ultrafine, Apple Studio Display, Pro Display XDR, LG 4K 21” ultrafine. There are some others that were released at one point or another but are not easy to get for cheap. I don't have the budget for a 5K one, and i think a 1440px 27" monitor will not be as sharp as i need it to be for my photos. thanks a lot in advance
Looks like a lovely monitor! I was in the market for a display for my 2020 M1 Mac Mini. I stumbled on the ASUS ProArt series, and went with the PA278QV. Full colour calibration from factory, full tilt/height adjustment, I use the HDMI input and it can go up to 75Hz. Really impressed with it!
@@FraTad, I used both. I had a Samsung T7 plugged in via the second port. And used the additional USB ports as well. Had to retire the screen as it started retaining images. No option on the 2720U to recalibrate.
LG Ultrafine 27" 5K is still the best Mac monitor below the Apple XDR display... Thunderbolt connection, usb-3 hub on the rear side, no buttons and fully controllable through Mac OS, and color calibrated with Mac OS together with Apple.
I'm super happy with my LG UltraFine Ergo 4K 27" and aesthetically imo mine matches apple products magic keyboard etc. better than this thick chonk. I can control settings through my keyboard with default apple UI. LG does Mac displays better than any competition.
LG UltraFine 27” 5K is the best monitor u can get short of the apple display. I tried the BenQ 27” display and didn’t like it. Not sharp enough. I’m a graphic designer so end up needing to spend more for a better quality display.
Sounds like you were saying you’re about to make a video on it the other accessories… but I saw the Stream Deck in this video which I’d never heard of. I immediately ordered one and got it yesterday. I’m going to use it more as a productivity tool. While I pride myself on my keyboard shortcuts, having a button to press for certain things I can already see is going to be brilliant. I’m a sales engineer, meaning I do a lot of software demos. Having buttons that just take me straight to a certain demo use case is going to be nice. It’s stuff I could pull off with bookmarks or Alfred scripts, but being able to press a button without distracting my audience I think will be pretty cool
Was deciding between PD2700U and PD2725U for digital art and I think this sold me! Especially because I feel like with the thunderbolt 3 ports and ergonomic stand, it eliminates other purchases like a thunderbolt dock and ergo arm... so that honestly closes the gap between the prices. Gonna to pick one up refurbished fingers crossed.
A year too late, but just in case for someone else. PD2700U is NOT color accurate. It has NO M-Book or DCI-P3 profiles. And there is NO color sync whatsoever. So don't make my mistakes :D If you got PD2725U, what is your opinion? Should I upgrade? Thank you :)
I just randomly picked up a “thrown by USA” 2K LED from a local market in Pakistan where sellers don’t even know the difference between 2K and 4K. The LED was buried below many other LEDs. Picture quality is surprisingly superior than my Macbook Air’s M1 Retina display. No text blurry issue. It supports many screen sizes and picture mode. I bought it for only $97 without scratching my head. Perks of living in Pakistan 😘
The only answer is probably but maybe not, depending on the user. Recently I’ve been surprised to read a few users talking about going Mac>4K with no scaling. Was surprised because in months of observing I’d never seen that before. However, it does show that for a few people, that allegedly works. What I’m used to reading and seeing is that without scaling, Mac>4k 27” yields text and images that are far to tiny to work with, and scaling is necessary. I know that scaling would be necc for me, just based on video recorded examples I’ve seen in presentations. I’ve read and seen a number of times users using native 27” 4K and then placing their face within a few inches of the screen. Painful to watch but whatever works for them. FWIIW YMMV and there are a lot of videos on this platform that focus on the subject of 4K scaling from a Mac with video recorded examples of images and text at various levels of scaling.
I've been using the same 27" Ultrasharp since late 2012, so I think I'll stick with Dell. Furthermore, they just released two 27 and 32 4K black IPS panels with an enhanced contrast of 2000:1, and an 34" ultralarge Alienware QD-Oled will be available in a few weeks. Once you've tried out Oled, there's no going back.
@@RabianskiT Not that I know of. I'd rather buy a Dell Ultrasharp myself, but it's the first model of an all new technology. There's only this model and a big Sony TV coming later.
@@DarkPhychic Oled may not be bright enough for well-lit rooms, but I'm a night owl, and the standard pixel density is good enough for most people, including Mac users without very sharp eyes.
I bought this monitor a few weeks ago after some very extensive research and I still think it’s second only to the Pro Display XDR. One cable and I’ve got power, DisplayPort, audio, and my Time Machine drive. Paired with a monitor light from BenQ and some Apple input accessories and you’ve got an easy Pro-ready setup!
@@szatanica1 it’s a long cylinder that mounts about above the monitor screen and just like headlights it projects light straight onto the desk without creating any glare on the screen. It’s way better than a desk lamp and it’s super sleek and discreet. I recommend any of the BenQ options. Here’s a product video I found on a flagship model: ruclips.net/video/ffBQ5sa9ol8/видео.html
At the same exact specs, 27'' 4K 95% DCI-P3 99% sRGB 1.07 billion colors, slightly better contrast, sits the Dell Ultrasharp U2720Q with way smaller cost. Very similar design too.
I’ve been using multiple displays for about ten years. I discovered, pretty much by accident, that the prime benefit is the movement of my eyes, neck, shoulders to look at the second display. The difference is not subtle and I’ve experienced it in all of my multi-display setups. If someone asked me “why they should use a second display” I could stop right there, offering only the one reason.
@@BetterCreating In much of my work in broadcast, I have 10 or more displays, each with an express purpose and just a nice fast rolling chair-ride away. It’s not at all a luxury. It’s a system I’ve worked years to develop - the job would literally be impossible otherwise. Trying to glean and respond to tons of info staring at one spot is very bad for me, physically and mentally.
I use just a 49' ("nornal," not those weird ultra wide stuff) 4k Samsung on landscape and two 28' 4k Samsung on portrait on the sides. Works like a charm!
Fantastic video! What do you think of the text quality on the BenQ's when connected to the MacBook? Not retina (right?) but good enough to not be disappointing?!?
It's good - I really like the quaslity of the image: but then this is usually true of any reasonable 4K. I would definitely also look at the LG ultra fines thou: I hear they can have more direct support for linking to native mac settings rather than using scaling. But I'm really enjoying this one. Some designers have reported some backlight bleed in the corners on the BenQ but that is for very deep black - focused image work - most users won't spot this.
As a coder, one of the problems I have with matte screens is the fact that text gets a bit blurry on the edges on a lot of monitors. How is the text readability on this one? I want ultra sharp text before anything else, does this one deliver that?
@@NguyenJulian Oh wow! How many splits can you make that doesn't feel cramped? Two or three? And what made you choose it over the 34 ultra as a coder. Sorry I have many questions 🤣 In my country, we can't just return stuff if we don't like it. Purchase is final. 🤣
@@arvi8843 No worries about the questions! Feel free to ask as many as you'd like. I'm totally the same way when it comes to buying a new product - I will go deep down the research hole and make sure I'm weighing all my options. So to answer your questions: 1) I can comfortably do two screen splits. Three is definitely possible, but not ideal. I have my laptop open in front of it so use that screen real estate. 2) So while I am a coder, I am also a photographer. I can really take advantage of the 4K resolution of the 32, while the 34 is only 2k. Additionally, the 32 inch has much better connectivity - it has a Thunderbolt 3 port which also outputs up to 85W (which Is what I need to charge my 16 inch MBP). The 34 inch does not have Thunderbolt. Does your country have Amazon? Or where are you purchasing from where there is no return policy? Please let me know if you have any more questions. Would love to help in anyway that I can :)
@@alex_lionspaw I love the monitor. I use two laptops so being able to switch between them is great. I don’t do any print production and have not done any color calibration. But for what I do, I find the colors to be accurate.
Yes works fine with PC - I mention other monitor options in the video - the Dell and LG options looks great and better value if you are looking to spend less :)
I have the PD3220u. Great monitor. My only call out that some people might have an issue with is the brightness. If you sit near a lot of windows, then the glare will be overpowering.
Yeah, I sold my PD3220u for that exact reason. Next to my imac screen it was far too dark. Just ordered the mac studio display for the extra brightness.
@@NguyenJulian I put on ebay but ended up selling it through facebook marketplace. Don't get me wrong it's an amazing screen, I just needed more brightness
@@heoung8611 I haven't seen it personally. But my friend has an OLED and it has amazing brightness, colour and contrast. I'm not sure how it would go for a close monitor though... I just bought a second one and couldn't be happier (even with the pricey price tag)
Yeah - I still think it’s a good choice. If you can get hold of an Eve spectrum and are happy to that risk of it arriving (!) from what I hear… that actually looks super brilliant + 144hz and looks like that!
What about 120 hz? Does it give you that or does it take down the experience to 60 hz like an ipad mini?🥴 What abut vesa stand compatibility, can you put it on any vesa stand as it comes?
It’s only 60htz. Always seems to be the trade off for creative lead monitors not gaming - so frustrating! But yes - VESA Mount is super straight forward and comes with screws and spacers depending on the arm.
@@BetterCreating I see… great with vesa! I got the ipadmini 6 and I get migraine and crystals watching it too long, especially if scrolling a lot..l I do not get that from scrolling on other apple devices… is a constant highpeed jumping of the ipad mini screen when scrolling…. i suppose that is due to the 60 hz screen?! I'm willing to spend up to $1500 on a large (over 30") monitor. It needs to look great with a MacBook m1 and can't have any scaling issues. I do primarily photo and video editing. What would you recommend?
Imo one of the best parts of Apple monitors is that they don't have that annoying matte layer that dulls the colors (see Dave2D video), wish this was available in glossy.
Yeah - most non-apple monitors are Matt finish I believe - I find this one particularly OK to use thou if you are looking for a shiny finish - you really have to do Apple native displays. Meh.
Hey! Thanks for useful video, but what about PPI? 27 inch 4K is not a good choice, having 163 PPI vs recommended 220 PPI for retina and 110 PPI for non retina displays.
People are really overthinking this ppi issue…i have a 4k LG which i use with my mac,,, ive heard people say it will be blurry, put images and text are crystal sharp, i reall dnt get why everyone want a 5k monitor with a mac
Great to hear! The wallpaper is a native apple one that came on my 14” Mac. If you go for it make sure to use my links in the description - i’d be super grateful! :)
27" or 32" - I use both and I honestly cannot make up my mind. But interestingly here is what I do. MacBook Pro 16 (2019) gets the 28" Samsung 4Kand - Dell XPS 13 (2021) gets the BenQ 32". Having recently retired I actually moved into the Mac OS - and - love it!
I was wondering if I could connect 2 of these monitors together with a Mac book pro m1 max? I love having the ability to spread my workout and was wondering if I could do that here or if the monitor can’t pair with another.
Hi! I hear 4k monitors has some scaling issues with MacBooks. Aka, if you dont run it in native resolutions, it will be a heavy resource hog. Thats also why Apple themself made a 5k monitor, and not a 4k. So technically you want 5k or half of that, the 1440p to run native resolutions/scaling. Does the Mac mode on this go around this? I dont fully understand it but theres only 2 out of the display settings you actually want to use, the ones in between will use way more resoursces.
Hi Kennet, I don't think that the Mac mode can override the scaling problem, and yes, I confirm that is a very performance hog. On my company Macbook (an i9 with rx460) I can't run it in scaled mode and when it works, I encounter many glitches due to the massive GPU usage. Another thing you have to consider is to use only DP connections, as HDMI doesn't have enough bandwidth to deliver a 4:4:4 RGB signal, and it results in a 4:2:0 signal, with pixeled reds. If you have an M1 I would consider it, but with an Intel Mac... I would pass.
Thank you for the detailed review! Does this monitor adjust higher than the height of a MacBook Pro, or do you need another stand? I want to create a setup where the monitor is sitting directly above my MacBook
It’s been a while since I used the original stand - I have a feeling you may need a little more - but that said - I’d highly recommend picking up a $25 monitor arm on Amazon like my vivo arm to take up less space anyway. Great monitor with that particularly. See my desk setup video that followed this one :)
Thanks pal. It’s a print from a shop on London’s Southbank - I think if you search for South Bank Centre London, you may find they stock it in their store. 👍
BenQ have done a pretty good job with the PD line monitors, specially for the price compare to SW line. My only complaint is that, they advertise this monitor the same es the predecessor of it, the PD2720U. If the this monitor is using the same panel as the 2720U than it does not cover 95% DCI-P. The PD2720U is a GBLED panel not a WLED PFS. GBLED would not cover 95% DCI-P I have Donetsk many different calibration and settings on my PD2720 and would not reach. Overall the monitor color are superb for its trier, I’m very happy with it even though I’m using it as a second monitor.
Having just purchased, spent hours fiddling with and then returning a BenQ production monitor, said to be Mac compatible, and having watched BenQ waffle and change w/re to models X and Mac compatibility, I don’t feel secure enough to take that plunge again. They put stuff out there and then they change. Right after I got the BenQ, I went to support.benq only see a large font paragraph alert saying that the monitor I purchased was suddenly no longer compatible with Mac m series machines. The large bold font alert nature of this told me that previously the monitor was comparable. BenQ implied that Apple was the problem. I have no idea, and when I looked again last night, the big alert paragraph was gone, replaced with a note saying hdmi would not function of the monitor was match with an m1. They’re all over the place, for me ut was impossible to get customer support, and although I wish the monitor had worked out, I have no time to invest in free beta testing for BenQ. Firmware has been reported to be a big issue too, fwiiw.
I just sat mine behind the wire which held it there. Can also use blue-tack or the old adhesive Velcro trick is a good one - I used to use that with my laptop to hold an SSD on the road. :)
Now it’s out, it’s worth doing; I personally think the apple studio monitor is silly money for what it is - pay the extra 200 and you get a whole iMac!
Speakers? I think I’m the only person in the world who wants to get rid of my TV and have a superb large monitor with speakers so I can watch streaming services from say an Apple TV when not working … is there a really obvious alternative I’m missing? Thank you
Mine is the Keychron k3 v2 with brown switches (75%) . I really like it. Ordered the chunkier K2 V2 which is very nice too - but was a bit too tall to slide under my desk shelf and find this one better on the volume side! :)
Be aware! These BenQ monitors have only 250-300nits of brightness. This is ok only if you work in a dark room or sit with curtains closed all day. In all other cases, they are unusable. Apple displays have 500nits and it's a night and day difference. My advice: do not buy these BenQ monitors until you are 100% sure that you don't need brightness. To get a feel of how it would look compared to a MacBook Pro, you can set MacBook's brightness to 50-60% and this is basically how this monitor looks at the max brightness.
Very true - they are not the brightest at all! I agree you should be sure it will work in your space - mine has been just fine thou. Thanks for sharing 👍
nice one. Yeah, they look good but I don't like the aspect ratio for my workflow. That deeper ratio is less good for video editing timelines and viewing 16x9 content. Had it not been for that i think it looks like a great monitor! :)
Not sure how this beats out the LG ultra fine monitors. Similar color, USBC /thunderbolt connector that drive the monitor, other usb connectors on the monitor, AND charges your laptop with 96 watts means you just need one connection. And the base isn’t as big nor the monitor as thick. But I have been thinking about a small OLED tv instead for the perfect blacks.
I hear you - I personally found the bases of the LGs to be more annoying due to those curved feet - at least with this one you can put things on the base for this one. But have to say those ergo arms look great. Agree - 96watts on LG is better than 65watts on BenQ but if left plugged in - no huge difference really and both still just need a single connection. The thickness of the monitor for me is not an issue when the design is so good and mostly seen from the front. Nice idea looking at OLEDS for perfect black - wonder if you can still find the connectivity and colour profiles. Thanks for watching!
I know my monitor has not the best the color accuracy but it is a 32:9 120hz 3840x1080 monitor which allows me to work insanely good. @@christopantz i just discovered all these information about scaling issues with the 27 4K, i was juste about to purchase the asus proart 27 4k, but i need your help here, i'm not a designer, i will mostly do very heavy photo editing, and maybe video editing in the future, will i encounter the same problems you guys have or not ? i will still deal with texts, emails, browsing... but i don't mind having the texts scaled up, can you please tell what other problems will i encounter with a 27" 4k monitor as a photographer ?
I don't have the budget for a 5K one, and i think a 1440px 27" monitor will not be as sharp as i need it to be for my photos.
thanks a lot in advance
I bought this monitor after watching this. Great video, Simon! :)
Ah cool - I’m still using and loving mine. Hope it works for you :)
Sounds great - thanks for sharing - waiting for that perfect affordable 5k 120htz + well designed monitor still!
Could not agree more, I've had one for 8 months. King!
I agree, 27-inch works for my home workstation setup.
Yes - I thinks it’s optimum - anything bigger I have to reduce the window down on the screen.
I’ve got a 2720U. Just put my external SSDs in the back of the screen. Great idea.
Does it work with the second thunderbolt port or do you use the usb-A ports?
@@FraTad, I used both. I had a Samsung T7 plugged in via the second port. And used the additional USB ports as well. Had to retire the screen as it started retaining images. No option on the 2720U to recalibrate.
LG Ultrafine 27" 5K is still the best Mac monitor below the Apple XDR display... Thunderbolt connection, usb-3 hub on the rear side, no buttons and fully controllable through Mac OS, and color calibrated with Mac OS together with Apple.
Agree it’s still a great monitor ! Just gonna cost a fair bit more. Fingers crossed for some new Mac / LG monitors in 2022 - I hear rumours! :)
@@abdulhamidozturk agreed I have the same one at my office would like another at my home but can’t believe the price is $120 more now…..
No contest the LG is the only one to have tried others but came back to the LG. I have 2, love them.
So don't make my mistakes :D
If you got PD2725U, what is your opinion? Should I upgrade? Thank you :)
I just randomly picked up a “thrown by USA” 2K LED from a local market in Pakistan where sellers don’t even know the difference between 2K and 4K. The LED was buried below many other LEDs. Picture quality is surprisingly superior than my Macbook Air’s M1 Retina display. No text blurry issue. It supports many screen sizes and picture mode.
I bought it for only $97 without scratching my head.
Perks of living in Pakistan 😘
Where did you buy it from? And what's the exact model name? Any defect in the monitor?
This feels like an ad. What about display scaling? Does this monitor require scaling?
Same question.
Love the setup, I feeling little sick with Covid but always it’s good to view your videos :)

Yeah, it’s a good one
Excellent video friend, I love that monitor, one question, could you give me the reference of the keyboard? It is beautiful and very elegant!
Do you know if there are any plans for 27-30 inch QD OLED monitors? Ultrawide is not for me…
@@RabianskiT Not that I know of. I'd rather buy a Dell Ultrasharp myself, but it's the first model of an all new technology. There's only this model and a big Sony TV coming later.
Pixel density on that alienware oled sucks.and also dim brightness
@@DarkPhychic Oled may not be bright enough for well-lit rooms, but I'm a night owl, and the standard pixel density is good enough for most people, including Mac users without very sharp eyes.

I bought this monitor a few weeks ago after some very extensive research and I still think it’s second only to the Pro Display XDR. At the same exact specs, 27'' 4K 95% DCI-P3 99% sRGB 1.07 billion colors, slightly better contrast, sits the Dell Ultrasharp U2720Q with way smaller cost. Very similar design too.
I mention it in the video as a great cheaper alternative.
I agree. This is brighter than the Dell one.

I’ve been using multiple displays for about ten years. I discovered, pretty much by accident, that the prime benefit is the movement of my eyes, neck, shoulders to look at the second display. The difference is not subtle and I’ve experienced it in all of my multi-display setups. If someone asked me “why they should use a second display” I could stop right there, offering only the one reason.
great point man! totally true
Yeah great point / glad to hear the double is working for you :)
@@BetterCreating In much of my work in broadcast, I have 10 or more displays, each with an express purpose and just a nice fast rolling chair-ride away. It’s not at all a luxury.
Hey men, thanks for the review.
What about the retina, because it's not a 5k instead a 4k? Do you notice up?
As a coder, one of the problems I have with matte screens is the fact that text gets a bit blurry on the edges on a lot of monitors. How is the text readability on this one? I want ultra sharp text before anything else, does this one deliver that?

@@arvi8843 No worries about the questions! Feel free to ask as many as you'd like. I'm totally the same way when it comes to buying a new product - I will go deep down the research hole and make sure I'm weighing all my options.
So to answer your questions: 1) I can comfortably do two screen splits. Three is definitely possible, but not ideal. I have my laptop open in front of it so use that screen real estate. 2) So while I am a coder, I am also a photographer. I can really take advantage of the 4K resolution of the 32, while the 34 is only 2k. What abut vesa stand compatibility, can you put it on any vesa stand as it comes?
It’s only 60htz. Always seems to be the trade off for creative lead monitors not gaming - so frustrating! But yes - VESA Mount is super straight forward and comes with screws and spacers depending on the arm.

I was wondering if I could connect 2 of these monitors together with a Mac book pro m1 max? I love having the ability to spread my workout and was wondering if I could do that here or if the monitor can’t pair with another.
Yes - you can daisy chain two of them I believe.
Does it have vignetting & other panel uniformity issues?
Hi, are you using these with Default Settings for display, or with scaling.
Does the PD 2725 work with the M1 MacBook Pro?
@@mickeyjetpur7998 yes, it works. I am using M1 Macbook pro 16" with this monitor, using thunderbolt connection.

Im still debating on this or the Dell UP2720Q. Any thoughts? i'm looking for STudio display quality. thx

How about comparing it to the Apple Studio Monitor?
Now it’s out, it’s worth doing; I personally think the apple studio monitor is silly money for what it is - pay the extra 200 and you get a whole iMac!

Yes, I think it can… but I’d double check with BenQ if buying based on it!
What desk is that looks like height of shelf is adjustable
Ah yes - it’s the String shelving system :)

how about display scaling, PPI issues and text jitter on these BenQ displays?
The LG Ultrafine are just ugly as hell.
Nice looking desk setup

I know my monitor has not the best the color accuracy but it is a 32:9 120hz 3840x1080 monitor which allows me to work insanely good. What do you mean by “no support for M1”? Meaning the monitor app or the whole display? I got a bit confused…

Looks like the matte finish of the glass reduces the black depth - Deep blacks become kinda dark greyish...... Or is that just in the film here?
I think that is accentuated by the camera. / filming angle. I find it fine... although it's not a super bright screen - depends on your space
Wow, that's a gorgeous monitor!
It really is! Loved editing this video on it. :)
What resolution do you run the monitor for? Is the text crisp like a MBP?
Great review!
Glad you think so!
