I disagree about 4K monitors. There’s a reason why Apple monitors are either 5K or 6K. It has to do with 110 vs 220 ppi and 4K is a strange fractional upscaling and downscaling which can hurt performance since these scales are done via GPU especially when you’re already doing GPU intensive activities. I recommend 1440p over 4K to keep the math simple so the scaling won’t be too problematic.
What most people dont realize: Macbooks are using a scaled resolutions by default. For example my Macbook Air 1440x900 (display as hardware is 2560x1600), and thats no problem GPU wise.
I compared a lot of these, but ultimately went for a LG 34WK95-U. Ultra-wide (21:9), 35 inches, 5120 x 2160, 450 nits peak brightness, 98% AdobeRGB, 5 ms reaction time, 8.8 kg. This is the sweet spot for me for video editing and photo editing. And the price is reasonable too.

What are you doing on the mac/display if I may ask? Gaming/video editing etc? And how are you finding the colour accuracy compared to the MacBook side by side?
I recently bought the Dell UltraSharp U2723QE as an extention to my iMac 2017. I was at first a little bit sceptical because it was cheaper than other models and it feels like plastic. But I have to admit that it is a beast. It covers 100 % sRGB and the image quality is jaw dropping with IPS Black. I love it and I don't regret the investment.
I know it has been around awhile, and I hope they refresh it soon, but the I still love the LG 5K Ultrafine! It has the best resolution and scaling, great color accuracy, and good features. It is not a high refresh and has large bezels, but the screen is fantastic. For working on photos, productivity, and the occasional video editing, I think it is hard to beat. I have tried some of the monitors on your list, and I went back to the Ultrafine 5K.

It has UCB-C data and 96W power delivery plus a ton of other ports so I use it as a USB-C hub as well. Fantastic quality and superb value for money - is there anything that comes close? Only caveat is that it’s a power hungry beast by the time you have everything driven through it (44W up to 185W max).
You did not mention anything about scaling on 4K monitors. Is it still an issue, and does it have some performance impact? I found a lot of complaints in the past. But I am not a Mac user yet, so I am checking which display to buy for mac mini or another Apple computer.
Yes scaling does require additional processing power from both the cpu and GPU. Sme will say that it’s negligible. I however don’t have a crystal ball, and believe it’s best to minimize power draw wherever possible cuz ya never know. This appears to be the argument in favor of 1440pm, however I’d never be surprised to learn that Apple employs additional layers of scaling that I didn’t know about. My current understanding is that Mac product scales immediately just to present an image, and then rescales x number of times at 60x per second to adjust for screen resolution, ppi, and user settings.
Can you make a video on the best dual monitor docks for the new m1 pros etc? the best 2 in 1 dock that allows 120hz output via display port or hdmi at minimum 1080p? That would be so useful! No third party apps required like Displaylink either, they support dual natively.

@@Thetechchap I'm just wondering whether it works well with the MBP 14 with the scaling issues? I've heard mixed reviews about the text clarity on the LG ultrawides and I was hoping to get your opinion as you've been using it for a while!
I don't have a 2nd screen, my external monitor is my only screen for my good old mid 2012 MacBook Pro 13" since its screen went black in 2020. I know what the problem is, it's the back light but unfortunately there is no competent repair shop in my place to deal with the right circuit on the motherboard. As I have very little money in the bank, I tried 2nd hand monitors but most of them were VGA and as I have Thunderbolt 2 (no typing error here) I wanted HDMI... this and a great bargain at the time led me to the Philips 241E (100€) plugged with a cable Thunderbolt 2 to HDMI (13€). Probably not the best set up but it allows me to use my MacBook Pro and watch your video.
For the last 10+ years I've paired a gaming monitor with a MacBook Pro (and gaming PC). Mac for creative but rest of workflow monitor. I've done this from games design at uni, through work life to now running a software company. A used MacBook Pro is great utility and holds value well.

This video is super cool, do you think you could do a video covering the experience of using a Studio Display as a 2nd monitor of an iMac Retina 5K 27” - Does the audio work in both screens? - Which camera will be used? - How’s the workflow?
Excellent video. For me, I use two 4k 32" samsung monitors for my desk. At first I was worried about the refresh rate being only 60Hz but I think it is less of a big deal when they are that large because you find yourself scrolling far less than something with more limited real-estate.
@@heinlenkatie I have one of those dongles that has the two usb c ports to plug in on it and it connects to one side of my MacBook at the end of my desk. It has two hdmi ports (4K 60hz ports), a port for my charger, ports for my keyboard and mouse, and an Ethernet Jack. It also has two extra USB ports (one type a and one type c) for flash drives or anything I may need to connect. It was only like 50 bucks whereas a dock was hundreds and you don’t even notice it at the back of my desk.
Thank you for another great video. I do have a completely off topic question. Where can I get the big stormtrooper that have been in many of your previous videos? Thank you in advance for your answer. Happy new year.
Very nice. I have a question that no one answered properly. When you connect a macbookpro to a display via thunderbolt cable, does this setup harm the battery of the macbook when using it daily as a desktop unit.? Some say, the machine will recognize that it is powered up constantly and the current by pass the battery so it does not stress it. What is your advise? What is the proper and safe way to use a laptop with a desktop monitor?
One issue that I’ve read online is that what resolution is recommended if your work will involve text reading tasks such as spreadsheets, programming, etc? Some say 1440p is fine, while others suggest to stay away from all monitors below 4k resolution if on a budget… or just go 5k UltraFine. What are your thoughts?
@@Sainicooldude01 Ah ok. There are certain Mac operating system versions where the text is clearer on 1440p, and the newer ones look better when you go above that resolution. I use a 2k display with a HiDpi setting and it looks crystal clear, but the same resolution and a different setting and certain things can be a strain. It kind of depends on the size of the screen and your budget. My display is very old now but with the right settings it is fantastic. The one thing I will say is the human mind and body is amazing, because it will adapt to whatever it has experience with. The only downside is that once you have experience with a much better display it might be hard to go back. So my display is only HD, and for me it’s amazing, but I have seen the newer Apple displays and I could see how my brain would get spoiled and used to such a better picture. So I would say that you would be fine for the text based tasks you have mentioned with 1440p definitely. But as soon as a person starts watching video content or editing videos, then you can always use more. For your tasks, you can save a lot of money just going for the 1440p, and you can use that extra money for other things. But if money doesn’t matter get the best you can afford, because in the end it is the only part of a computer we look at for hours and hours, and the better resolution will make that slightly easier.
@@ghost-user559 Idk, I've bought a 2K monitor and the text looks really bad (Monterey, 14 inch model). Tried to play with plist configs for font antialiasing but with no success. Couldn't get HiDpi options appear, so for the text-related work I would say 4K is the only option. For the video/image viewing it's still good, so this is the only a text-related issue
how for the love of god you can say that 1080p 24inch works on mac as an external display? With the new macbook i geniuenly get headaches using it for more than 30 minutes even with the betterdisplay app helping out.
Check the specs of your monitor, and then your PC settings, if you’re already outputting the maximum resolution and framerate that your monitor panel has, switching to USB-C won’t magically give your display more refreshes.
@@GreeniusGenius Well of course I know that since I also have a PC connected to my monitor. I was just asking if the Macbook is capable of displaying more than 60hz on external monitors.
@@Homayun Mac can do more than 60hz, modern Macs have Thunderbolt 3 ports with 40gbps of bandwidth. Just make sure you use a 10gbps USB-C cable and it’ll be fine (a thunderbolt cable would be overkill unless your monitor has thunderbolt.) There are video bandwidth calculators online. 10bit, 1440p 120hz uses 8gbps of bandwidth, so you’ll be fine.
I have that Samsung M7 smart monitor for a PC, and it is excellent, and it gives 4K@60 screen. It is just like hooking up a smart TV but without antenna out. It has support for Tizen Apps, has 2 HDMI, USB-C with charging and video transfer (up to 65W) and additional USB ports for whatever you like. It natively supports RDP to your Windows machine if that's what you prefer (to go fully without cables). One thing that I would like to have is "premium" version of this monitor, with a much better brightness (it is about 300 nits I believe, so HDR although supported is not really a HDR) and possibly QLED technology. That would make it perfect. Kind regards.

Hi Tom, could you do a video update to this one giving your best pics for MacBook users in early 2023?
Exactly what I was looking for as a recent convert from a PC to MacBook Pro.
For the last 10+ years I've paired a gaming monitor with a MacBook Pro (and gaming PC).
Mac for creative but rest of workflow monitor. I've done this from games design at uni, through work life to now running a software company.
A used MacBook Pro is great utility and holds value well.
Thanks for watching 🤗🤗

is there something out there that has
1) ultrawide screen, 38 or more
2) high resolution, at least 1600 vertical or even better more
3) at least 120 Hz refresh rate
4) good color accuracy
Great video! Would also love a video on the best MacBook docks
Danke!
Thank you!
So many options compared, important factors to consider explained, how to meet the varying needs of different usages addressed - amazing presentation. Thank you!
What about the Huawei Mateview 28inch. Should that be a contender as well for office use?
Great video, very insightful. What wallpaper are you using on the macbook? It really does the quality display justice.
Got any luck looking for it?
Thanks
This video is super cool, do you think you could do a video covering the experience of using a Studio Display as a 2nd monitor of an iMac Retina 5K 27”
- Does the audio work in both screens?
- Which camera will be used?
- How’s the workflow?
I really love the design of the ProDisplay XDR! Myself, I am rocking a 24" LG Ultrafine 4K monitor and it is perfectly fine for what I do with it.
Excellent video. For me, I use two 4k 32" samsung monitors for my desk. At first I was worried about the refresh rate being only 60Hz but I think it is less of a big deal when they are that large because you find yourself scrolling far less than something with more limited real-estate.
How do you connect everything together? Do you use a docking station?
@@heinlenkatie I have one of those dongles that has the two usb c ports to plug in on it and it connects to one side of my MacBook at the end of my desk. It has two hdmi ports (4K 60hz ports), a port for my charger, ports for my keyboard and mouse, and an Ethernet Jack. It also has two extra USB ports (one type a and one type c) for flash drives or anything I may need to connect. It was only like 50 bucks whereas a dock was hundreds and you don’t even notice it at the back of my desk.
Thank you! I've just ordered a new M1 Pro and I want to pair it with a monitor that's worthy.
Certainly got the colour tones near perfect on your videos. Be safe & Merry Christmas Tom.
The Dell S2722QC seems like a very good 4K entry monitor as well!
What computer do you have?
@@ghost-user559 windows, Linux. Borrowed a friend’s M1 MacBook Air for sometime. Now back on Windows.
@@ghost-user559 thank you! Appreciate the write-up. Will keep in mind!
I know I'm late to the party but where do we find that wallpaper on his MacBook Pro? 🤩
Thank you for doing this. I really appreciate you doing this after I requested it awhile back. I love your style and work.
`is this for real or spam? The number quoted does not work
Great video! Do these monitors come with built-in speakers and how is the sound quality?
Hey Chap nice review! Does the M2 MacBook Air support 144hz and above?
how for the love of god you can say that 1080p 24inch works on mac as an external display? Ive just updated my laptop to a macbook pro m3 pro and was rocking a dual 24 inch displays on my previous windows machine and although the ppi was not great - it worked. With the new macbook i geniuenly get headaches using it for more than 30 minutes even with the betterdisplay app helping out.
Not suffered headaches or anything - would prefer 1440p every time though.
Hey, what is your wallpapaer that you use on your Mac?
yh, I want to download. ty
Please talk more about the scaling of Macbook to fit certain screen resolutions and how it affects performance

About time too - something I need for my New career in being a videographer
I am rocking my work Retina 16-inch, 2019 MBP (2.6GHz 6-Core Intel Core i7, 32GB 2667 DDR4, AMD Radeon Pro 5500M 4GB & Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536MB, 1TB HD) with dual Dell E2422HS monitors. Woo-Hoo!
Thanks for the monitor port capability chart!
Hey Chap! What if I use a USB-C on a 1440p monitor? will I get more FPS?
Check the specs of your monitor, and then your PC settings, if you’re already outputting the maximum resolution and framerate that your monitor panel has, switching to USB-C won’t magically give your display more refreshes.
@@GreeniusGenius Well of course I know that since I also have a PC connected to my monitor. I was just asking if the Macbook is capable of displaying more than 60hz on external monitors.
@@Homayun Mac can do more than 60hz, modern Macs have Thunderbolt 3 ports with 40gbps of bandwidth. Just make sure you use a 10gbps USB-C cable and it’ll be fine (a thunderbolt cable would be overkill unless your monitor has thunderbolt.)
There are video bandwidth calculators online.
Wait till March -- new monitors from Apple are rumoured, including a replacement for the XDR.
Great video, I would love to see a ‘best Mac monitor for less than $500 for photography and video production’ video.
😊Maybe a silly question ... But is it possible to use a macbook display and keyboard with the new mac studio👀❓
What’s the best 120 mhz plus 27” or larger 5k monitor to work with the new Mac Studio? If it’s not a Mac monitor will the web cam still work with an Apple if it’s not a dedicated Apple monitor?
LG 24 4k UltraFine with 2 thunderbolt 3 ports and 3 usb-c ports is the best for 4k and apple products.
Confused between 2k 144hz display vs a 4k 60hz one. My main task (90%) is programming, with very casual gaming on the side.
Go for 144hz
The pro display is such a nice looking monitor. Shame its so damn expensive.
You missed every 5k option and also missed the discussion on the issues with Mac OSX displaying correctly on a lot of monitors and how to fix this.
could you make a video on best docking stations for a MacBook?
This was so useful!
where'd you get that desktop background? I love it
The one that is on the Macbook pro
Not meny people think about monsters when doing some work for a part software and part time editor. Long story short I wa having trubble choseing the moniter. Thanks for the help.
I‘m sorry but the Pro Display XDR isn‘t a normal IPS its a mini LED like the new MacBook Pros
Pro display XDR uses Mini LED 12:30 it's just not 120hz
You are wrong about frame rate of Pro XDR. It supports 120hz just like latest macbook pro
Great video - Dell just announced the new U2723QE, which replaces the U2720Q!
What is that wallpaper on your macbook 👀👀
This was really helpful, thank you!
OMG The MacBook pro wallpaper!!. where can I find it??
which monitors are tall enough to go above a Macbook?
nice to see these things but I dont have the money
Keep up the good work
Been looking for this exact video. Thanks Tom!
Best budget Dell P2720DC, usbc with 65w and low price, and 2k, best working resolution.
I got myself the HP U28 4k usb c monitor. Good enough to charge the 16” MacBook Pro. I like it and it’s pretty cheap at £329
So helpful 😇👏🏼👏🏼🔥, keep going
Excellent! Honestly the best tech video with lots of useful informations! Thanks!
I'm currently using 3 x 24" screens but really want to swap them out for a 49" and possibly use one of the 24's above. I really enjoy and use all screen real estate when working and having the extra when chilling/surfing is a bonus too. The Dell 49" ticks most box's for me but they have been out of stock for ages :(
With so much variations in screens people view content on, there isn't so much point in getting highly calibrated monitor, unless printing photos etc. But online content purely depends what the end user views it on
Thanks to be crystal clear and informative ℹ️! 🎄
So if a monitor has HDMI 2.2 and a USB C 3.2, which would be better to use?
