    Wake me up when a 5K 120Hz QD-OLED monitor shows up. What many people don't seem to consider is a 5K monitor is the double DPI version of a 1440p monitor (as 4K is to 1080p). 1440p is currently the sweet spot for gaming. So having an all-purpose monitor that can run 5K native for general use and do a clean 1440p downscale for gaming would be, in my opinion, the *perfect* monitor. I'm surprised and disappointed that no-one is making one while 4K 240Hz OLED monitors are a thing.

    • @nuzgul3
      @nuzgul3 27 дней назад +1

      you can't have both at the moment I guess. Not for a reasonable price anyway.
      I've found model without 5k, but with everything else you might want: OLED, HDR1000, 360Hz.

      @@nuzgul3 Thanks for the suggestion, however I've been watching this space for a long, long time now. It's entirely possible to make a 5K 120Hz screen at this point. 4K 240Hz OLED is out there. From ASUS, as it happens. Look at the PG32UCDM. For the last four years I've been using an LG 38GN95B at home, which is 3840x1600 144Hz. Kind of a rare beast, but I figure if I'm going to have to deal with low DPI, I might as well benefit from space. I'm a programmer, so the additional vertical room is a big deal. It outweighs higher DPI for me since I'm forced to choose between 5K and, well, everything else. At work I use an Apple Studio Display currently and had 5K iMacs before that. Once you use 5K, you can never really go back to the 4K aspect ratio. I fully recognize it's a niche market, so until Apple itself releases a "promotion" 120 Hz display, no-one else is likely to. Unfortunately, Apple doesn't really care about its desktop display product line too much. It just makes me frustrated when the "perfect" monitor is technically reasonable at this point, even if it would be expensive. I just want to shake someone at ASUS and say take the PG32UCDM, make it 5K and drop it to 120 Hz for cable/connector bandwidth support. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

      I'm with you here. I'm a graphic designer and used to own the 5k iMac. It was a dream to work on. Then I got a gaming PC and wanted 5k resolution to work on, and 4k 120hz or 1440p 240hz to game with. The closest out there at the time was the Samsung Odyssey OLED G9 with a resolution of 5120x1440 at 240hz. Gaming is wonderful, graphic design work leaves much to be desired.

    People don't realize, you can't do 5K120 on Thunderbolt 4. It is nice to see Apple is rolling out Thunderbolt 5, which should be able too. I would not be surprised if Apple had a exclusive contract for 5K60 all this time, and it has expired, just in time for them to release a 5K120 (requiring Thunderbolt 5, which means a new Mac) at $1499-1799 range. Now that these 5K60s are coming out at the $800 range.

      Why not allow resolution and refresh rate options in the settings? Many of us looking for a Mac display with a KVM switch are also using gaming PCs or consoles as the other device. These days, we need at least a 120 Hz refresh rate for that. It would have been nice to see it as an option here.

    • @VMYeahVN
      @VMYeahVN Месяц назад +9

      "Exclusive contract for 5k60" is not how it works. It mainly just comes down to prioritizing features for the audience a particular monitor is aimed at by the manufacturer. For the most part, gamers don't need high resolution and productivity/creators don't need high refresh rate. It's just the small sector of people who want one monitor to do both (which i am one of them lol) who go "ugh why can't this 5k 218ppi monitor also do 120+hz!"

    I own two 27" 5K Retina ASDs (both glossy and love them !) , the displays are bright at 600 nits, the colors are vivid and accurate with the ultrawide P3 color gamut, the build quality is unparalleled, and the embedded acoustics fantastic. No macOS scaling issues with the TEXT being sharp and crisp at 5K 218 PPI compared to the blurry and distorted eye straining text of inferior 4K monitors esp while viewing code, documents, web pages etc from close distance for long hours.
    I personally evaluated multiple 4K, 5K , 6K displays from third party incl Samsung, LG, Dell, BenQ, Asus etc at stores for hours and still ended up purchasing the ASDs for my M2 ultra studio and M4 Pro Mac Mini setups ! My Mac Mini M4 Pro setup with TB5 ports is already waiting for 5K 120 Hz next generation ASDs.
    I am waiting to buy the next generation 32" 6K all OLED 120 Hz promotion pro XDR display with xHDR at 2500 nits and 1000,000 + : 1 contrast ratio , VESA adapter and 360 degree arm. I'd prefer state of art embedded speakers and 4K webcam , plus multiple TB5 ports for daisy chaining multiple units.
    macOS was never designed to work optimally with non-retina PPI including 32" 4K displays. The retina alignmemt happens at 4K - 21", 4.5K - 24", 5K - 27", 6K - 32". Looking forward to an ultrawide curved 8K 38"-40" OLED pannel from Apple too.and like to pair that with a custom upgraded version of the upcomimg M4 ultra mac studio spec'ed out.
    The webcam on these is average and for that I use Insta 360 Link 2 which I found better than Osbot Tiny2.

    Your description of "scaling" (on MacOS) is a bit wonky. Unfortunately Apple does not help in this regard as they don't emphasize enough the two words _looks like_ in their list. The choice of scaling in MacOS is *not just there* for other monitor types. It is intentionally part of the UI design, to allow people to change the UI to suit their personal needs, such as people with vision problems who want large icons and text for example.

In fact, many non Apple professional monitors, are as heavy or way heavier, than the Apple displays. For example an Asus PA32DC weights 8 KG more than the XDR display (with stand). I tested multiple times to make sure if I've made any mistakes. I dounted myself many times becasue ASUS ProArt line is ment for professionals and may youtubers are praising them. 😊I eventually chose the BENQ MA320 and got higher brightness than my macbook pro16 miniled in sdr senarios and great color accuracy. Thus, before you guys pull the trigger on any other ASUS ProArt lines, keep in mind that you might get a monitor with greenish white that you can tell not right with naked eyes.

    • @akyhne
      @akyhne Месяц назад

      That monitor must have had a defect then. It's factory calibrated to a delta E below 2. Or your Calibrite software sucks.
      Use DisplayCal instead. It's a much better software. There's a working Mac version somewhere.

    • @TalesOfWar
      @TalesOfWar Месяц назад

      @@akyhne Software isn't enough for proper calibration, you need hardware too. If you have the budget and really need super accurate colour then the go to brands are NEC and Eizo. You should always calibrate for your environment too, given it'll be different than the factory. A lot of pro's will set up their studio with controlled lighting to ensure ever more accuracy, but that's probably overkill for most people. You can really get into the weeds when it comes to this kind of stuff lol.

    • @akyhne
      @akyhne Месяц назад

      @TalesOfWar Not sure what you mean by hardware. The Calibrite software uses hardware, in form of the Calibrite Display Plus colorimeter (the case of OP). That's a decent colorimeter.
      I've never used the Calibrite software, but I've used X-rite, which was the former brand of Calibrite. And I never could get my two monitors to match each other. So, I changed to the Open Source software DisplayCAL, which worked great for me.
      Most professional displays advertise a pre factory calibration of a Delta E error below 2, and some even below 1. These are fairly accurate, and won't benefit much from a calibration, at least not initially. And a factory calibration is already done in a low light environment. Often you can't even calibrate the profiles on such monitors, in the sense, that you can't adjust any settings on the profiles, including brightness. For that, you need a monitor, with so-called hardware calibration, where you don't create an ICC color profile, but actually calibrate a 3D LUT into the monitor itself. Hardware calibration is also more accurate, than a software calibration, but they are also expensive monitors.
      Almost all the big brands sell monitors, with hardware calibration, so one brand is not necessarily better than the other. It depends on the price, and you usually get what you pay for.

    I know you said you don't personally need it, but this monitor not having 120hz refresh keeps it from being perfect for my use case. I'm not looking to have 3 monitors, one for every use case or whatever. I just need one. But i need it to be able to serve my productivity work, and then at the press of the Source button be able to switch over and and handle the full capability of a PS5 and i think it's crazy that all monitors other than the most high end QD-OLEDs make you have to choose one or the other. I'm really hoping that 2025 monitors can offer offer 5k 120hz at 27" or 6k 120hz at 32". I want to have my 218 ppi cake and eat it at 120hz too lol.

    I respect ASUS for getting this piece of the pie BUT this is way way too late. To be competitive this had to somehow be either OLED or mini LED with an insane local dimming algorithm, 120hz minimum or have some crazy standout feature (and a glossy option). This is just too blah but maybe they know something we do not. I have that feeling the new MacBooks got the thunderbolt 5 this year because in a few months we will see the new either studio display pro and or the Pro Display XDR 2 which will certainly be all of the things listed due to natural progression. Great video. Cheers!

      You can't have 120Hz with Thunderbolt 4 @ 5K. And Asus makes other monitors, with MiniLED technology. They are however all 4K and much more expensive. Like 3-4 times as expensive.
      Except for OLED, you won't see them making glossy display, at least not for their more expensive products. Because it makes no sense.
      With Apple's release schedule, you're gonna have to wait another 5 years, for a new XDR. And there are much better displays on the market, for much less.

    That people talks about Ks of pixels (without size or aspect ratio) as an indicator of quality of a desktop monitor is preposterous. We should reject that as misleading and instead ask for PPI (pixels per inch)! That tells you how “fine grained” the image is. Apple has always done this. Actually it used an even more meaningful measure: pixel per viewing angle. All its products with a retina displays have so many pixels that at standard viewing distance you won’t notice pixelation of curves.

      @ThisIsE I've never had a good experience with a matte panel. Even the new matte 4K OLEDs and the Apple nano coating reduce the clarity and color saturation, and they somehow even FEEL cheap compared to the glossy counterpart.
      It's just not worth it when you can just get blinds for your windows and have a much better looking glossy coating.

    • @akyhne
      @akyhne Месяц назад

      No professional display uses glossy and for reasons. And no, there's no measurable difference in color saturation, brightness or black levels. Yes, text is more clear, but that's about it.

      @houssamalucad753 Месяц назад

      @@akyhne sure not the super expensive professional displays other than the Apple XDR because they need to be used in settings such as a studio where the lighting conditions are not always fixed and accounted for, but a lot of semi-professionnal displays like the Apple studio and practically all high end laptop displays are glossy.
      The difference in clarity is measurable and obvious. The difference in color saturation is down to how our eyes perceive the light smearing on a matte coating, not sure if it would be reflected in measurements.
      For a quick comparison, some RUclipsr already reviewed one of the only displays with both a matte and glossy options, the Dough Spectrum One 4k. I advise you check that video and see the difference for yourself.

    • @akyhne
      @akyhne Месяц назад

      @houssamalucad753 The XDR is not a professional display. The Studio Display actually beats it in many areas. No reference monitor comes in glossy, at least none of those I've looked up. That goes for FSI, Sony and other reference monitors.
      And no, you can't measure any difference, like I said. But there's a difference in perceived experience.
      Glossy provides 2 "positives". One is the more clear text, the other is the shiny ness, vivid perceived look it gives. But in essence, the latter is a bad thing, as it's based on reflections from ambient light. Which is a bad thing. But people like it. For pros, it's a no-go.
      Monitors Unboxed very recently reviewed an Asus Oled display, with a glossy front panel. It was the third monitor with this panel, the other two being from different brands. The Asus had way worse blacks, when there was ambient light, which there always is, except for reference color grading, where they sit in 5 nits, controlled dark environments.
