This is a fabulous video. I found myself running away from work & feeling more anxious as my desk grew more cluttered. It was easy for me to write off the instinct to be fastidious & spartan in my work area as an extravagance, or imitating/aspiring for things I want, but it’s essential for productivity. I think the TL;DR of this video is to trust your gut/instinct/feelings and try to examine yourself if you are finding yourself distracted, worried, less-productive, or anything related to that.
I highly recommend getting a walking pad under your standing desk. It is surprisingly easy to use a mouse and keyboard while walking at 2/3 km/h, and it is way less strain on your body than just standing.
@@karinaki13 Hi bro. What is the best lighting for RUclips video shooting under $250 from Amazon? If possible, what kind of lighting did you use in this video? Thank you.
Some useful tips. My workspace has always taken centre stage wherever I’ve lived because my life revolves around studying and working. That has usually meant that the office takes over the dining area and sometimes even the living room. I’m looking forward to the day when the layout of where I’m living lets me work from the couch with a keyboard connected to a huge monitor and I’m still near the coffee pot. Coziness is important in winter. That means wood and colourful art as a contrast to the neutral walls and furniture. My desk is a white metal IKEA unit topped with a beautiful piece of salvaged solid teak. Adjustable lamps instead of overhead lighting are key if you’re videoconferencing in both bright daylight and in late evening darkness. My leisure time spent with others happens in coffee shops and on hiking trails so I don’t need a bunch of rooms complicating my living space.
I absolutely love my standing desk (a Flexispot) and Aeron. My posture issues and pain went away basically. I switch every hour or so, since it’s so easy.
such a timely video. i am thinking about upgrading my desk setup before 2025 with a bunch of stuff in my cart waiting for checkout. This vid helped to reconsider a few things. Thanks!
It's not always about how to set up or what someone should buy to get started in a home office, it's not a dream yet it's essential to have one correctly. Daniel you mentioned things that helped me clean my thoughts, Thank you 💙
Easy cheap and minimal desk setup with all the gear one might need. 1. Alex drawer units left and right for organisation paired with a wooden plate as a desk or a pro desk which is height adjustable etc. (let´s face it you never really need to adjust it anyway) 2. Above the monitor or monitors a simple IKEA LACK shelf unit which is hollow to hide all the cables. 3. Unter the LACK unit you can install speakers, mic. holder, headphone holder, webcam and or light all out of the way and yet functional. 4. On top the shelf you can can place an additional laptop or some pictures or plants. 5. Additionally I use cupboards for my VR gear, Camera gear and other stuff as well. It all looks clean, I can wide my desk any time since I use monitor arms, I can hide all the cables easily and I have all my stuff.
I live in a one room Apartment - and you inspired me in the past a lot - I’ve created an office space with high focus of making it look like living room furniture - I focused from mouse (pastel green), to desk Matt (rosé), to screen (white and green), to keyboard (white and light grey) on not using anything black - I got that ikea chair (white beige)- which doesn’t look too officy :) thanks for the inspiration :) - got a tylko which is separating visually the bed from the office and having a dedicated „tech drawer“, and a drawer for my black working bag ! My monitor is in the same time my TV (Samsung M8) - the desk is white and height adjustable - to melt in with the wall - I have a lightgreen carpet below and I love it :) would like to show it to you and get your opinion about it
Disagree about the premiss in the intro: gamer setups with flashy RGBs, figurines etc. aren't just about function, they are very much an aesthetic choice. There are tons of videos about people decorating even the inside of their PC case, or how they have different smart lighting schemes for different games (whether futuristic scifi shooter or cozy farming sim). It's just that their taste is different from the average interior design enthusiast bubble.
The one essential product binder I use everyday is 2" thick and full of samples. It props up my computer monitor to the right height. When the rep. calls, I tell them, "It's really useful".
❤ 21:26 surge protectors don’t protect from lightning ⚡️ strikes so be sure to unplug your equipment ‼️⚡️🤨 Old wrapping paper tubes are also great for keeping the cables out of view ❤
I've always been uncertain about standing desks because of 1) lack of built-in storage drawers and 2) I suffer from a chronic illness which makes standing difficult for really any length of time. Currently, I regularly get up from sitting at my desk to blow my nose, get more water or a snack from the kitchen or just to pace in the hallway. I don't know yet how that will feel with working a full-time schedule of being at my desk all day.
im really tempted to making my own desk. I can't believe there's limitations on L-SHAPED standing desks that are aesthetically pleasing to the eyes and isnt bulky.
Great content, just one remark on desk depth. Going other way around into shallow desk can be even worse than too deep in my experience. I have a desk in a living room that is quite long and narrow. Opted for a narrow LILLÅSEN Ikea desk which visually fitted well due to its form factor. Desk in practice is even to shallow to use with a laptop, just lacking leg space in practice. Ending up using it rarely, while my spouse straight up refuse to use it completely and we end up on dining table when working from home.
Daniel mate, please, I am sure you have a whole arsenal of desk mats - bring one of them to use! I think your setup would look super sleek with a leather mat, or even a felt in charcoal. The mouse on naked tabletop hurts my eyes :D
Being able to use my mouse anywhere on my desktop was like Independence Day for me! Even with a relatively large mat, I was constantly running off the edge (or having to be careful where I set a glass down). For anyone making intensive use of a mouse, that lack of constriction makes life so much more convenient. I would never give that up for the eye candy of a mat.

About the G.A.S, I usually tend to sit on something I want for weeks, if not months or years just to justify I need it and then buy it. While it still ends up with me having 1 mechanical keyboard, a half keyboard, a macro pad with a knob, a pair of bookshelf speaker, headphone and IEM and 2 27" monitors, I still find myself using all of them and having one less hinders my workflow. And about the ergonomics, I bought a less comfortable but still good ergo chair as I believe that anything that separate us from the floor is worth investing in, I try to not keep any water bottle or cups near my desk as I have a water jug a few steps away from my desk, this encourages me to stand up and drink while not far enough to make me lazy and get dehydrated.
smart bulbs to serve both room and video lighting is such a simple idea that i mentally slapped myself for not thinking of haha. thank you for the video; they're always so well put together from the visuals to animations
@6:11 This was so well said because less is definitely more when it comes to the time and effort you can get back instead of spending hours of precious time as you said researching for tools that you really don't need and then also researching how to do the setup just right on your desk which honestly is just more work and stress overall than it's worth rather than just being happy with what already works just fine 👍
How much do you think I would regret putting my 98" solid walnut butcher block onto an Uplift frame? I know they arent designed for 98" but it seems some have had success with it.
I wish you would’ve made this video sooner 😂. I went from an Ikea Malm Desk which was terrible for my aesthetic. Then I went for a walnut desk which is nice. Then I went for an all matte black setup for my gaming desk which was very nice but it was in my bedroom with poor lighting so I didn’t feel productive at all. Now I’m working on a white desktop with japandi style vibes and trying to incorporate more artificial lighting since the area is far from a window.
As a pianist i was trained to consider the flow of energy from shoulder to finger - eg hand lower than elbow. So i have found that having my - seated, allowing for the depth of a mechanical keyboard - desk level lower than is common has been super helpful. Umm yeah for the gas kinda hard not to do that with hacking the amount of adapters alone not to mention hubs and switches and servers not to mention more specialized hardware like my current setup I have three different work spaces in one desk to multitask and so I need leg room but storage outside the desk but in reach
Definitely a gas sufferer here. Started working from home and briefly had a nice minimalistic set-up then started watching more and more RUclips desk set-up videos and acquiring more equipment which started cancelling themselves out till I now have about a good few 00 pounds worth of stuff I can't use. Also, got the worst ergonomic chair ever and I found out that when I stand at my standing desk, I get dizzy. Had to ask the algorithm to stop recommending the videos to me and am now getting rid of all the dross.
My personal major problem with most offices is that desks are far too high for ladies. I spent a lot of time finding the perfect height setup. After that, I focus on simplicity combined with practicality. My laptop is lifted so the monitor is the same height as my external monitor which is lifted to eye height with the desk being elbow height. Yes, definitely drawers and minimal distractions. I do insist on having some flowers on my desk for a splash of colour, but that's it.
number one mistake imo: placement of desk. I just don't want to face a wall with my back to the room. I'd rather be in what feng shui calls the command position, facing the room and the entrance to the room. if the room is quite intimate but has a large window, i'll place my desk next to or facing that, and take advantage of the daylight. surprised you didn't talk about this! thank you for mentioning acoustics though!
I totally agree with you, but majority of us just don’t have enough space. A commanding position of the desk takes so much more space as the desk is taking a more central position, and cable management becomes very difficult.
I’ve only lived in a couple of spaces where such a setup worked. In both cases, the room was at least 17 feet long and took up half the total living space. In one case it was about 500 sq. ft. You need to be close to at least one wall at the side to have access to power, unless your work doesn’t require a big monitor.
@@polishtheday it's true it takes more space and cable management is a challenge. If you draw a square around your desk and the area taken up by your chair (and any rug or floor mat), then rotate the contents 180°, that should make a good start without encroaching on the remaining square meters in the room. I'm not saying facing the wall or window can't be the best option for a home 😊
I choose facing wall 1/ I use screen and laptop and a bunch of cable that I don’t want to have in the middle of the room and vision. I choose sofa for my command position. 2/ as adhd I need to limit my stimuli while working. Wall is the best. I tried with the window and got myself mostly dumb staring at the sky. I tried the room and got myself distracted until everything was in perfect order and then 🎉 lunch time and all over again. No distractions! Wall is my view of choice. And… I would like to hide the screen with a button. Future!
15:54 - Sure, plants are cute. I love plants. But don't count on them to magically supply you with oxygen. Unless you have your entire office covered in plants, they simply don't make enough of it to really matter in that regard. Still make for great additions to an office though.
Hi, thanks for this video! I'd be very interested in a solution for Gamers who need to work from home and have no space for two desks :) Because I really have these productivity issues
You had me up until the RGB laden, gaming product drenched setup was labelled "Function" lmao. Most "gaming" products radiating RGB are actually crap compared to normal or just ergonomic counterparts. Good points all around though :)
I realized the word "aesthetic" comes up quite a lot in your videos and with architects in general. It is a confusing word for me. So could you make a video explaining what it means exactly. Thanks.
I counted four commercials in this sponsored video. I understand that you need to make money, but having so many commercials in an already sponsored video feels excessive! Also, are you only making sponsored videos now? It seems that way.
The production quality alone is worth the ad spots. I don’t think people realize it takes creators dozens of hours, sometimes weeks to film each video and then at least a dozen or more hours to edit, optimize and publish. The content is free and we’re still complaining?
You do realize he could have at least 10 in every video. So many companies value Daniel's professional input, it's only natural for them to fight for ad spots. Daniel does a fantastic job of actually using and testing his sponsors products I cannot say the same for most content creators!
Its not the creators fault. This is youtube trying to get you to pay premium... and unfortunately for me it works. Creators have no say on the ads google will play in their videos.
Ditch the air purifier and get a plant wall or some sort of plant pots/tiny garden if you can. The plants will give you fresh air and have many mental health benefits
A piece of advice: E27 is a standard of the EU and the naming of this standard does not make sense to a most Americans. Maybe saying ‘these bulbs are available in your area’ instead of listing a certain standard. I am quite literal, as I am neurodiverse. I do not mean this to be a criticism. Otherwise, I always love watching your content, when my ADHD is interested in the topic.
If you show studies about sitting time and how it can badly affect your body and then offer standing as an alternative why would you not look into/ show the risks of that too? Because i just recently saw studies about that and standing also has risks of it own though other kinds then sitting. Just curious i still like the video overall and you do make a lot of excellent points otherwise
Whenever I see supposedly "Pro" desktops from content creators in RUclips they are always super tidy, super clean, minimalistic empty desktops. But when I see the real desktops from true professionals they are quite the opposite. Plenty of creative chaos, things, cables, chargers, and even half a pizza from the previous night. Tidy minimalistic desktops are more from wannabes than real professionals.
No, just no. Suggesting going for a less than optimum chair with regards to ergonomics is just wrong. Suggesting people should punish them self, in order to remember not stay seated all the time that is just not the way forward.

19:43 is literally me right now
Hi, thanks for this video!
The one with the most tools when they die wins.
Happy Christmas loves from Debra from Mallorcaxxx
500k before 2025? Let's gooo!
G.A.S. missing a full stop at end
I say put your standing desk on a timer, if it rises on it's own you got no other option than rising with it 😂
That’s a good idea if you could do it!
growing that hair? wow
I can not live with a minimal setup. I need good audio, multiple screen and air purifier on my desk
Is he slowly becoming to look like chris evans 😂
The richest person is not the one who has the most, but the one who needs the least
After 6mins i got sleepy
I realized the word "aesthetic" comes up quite a lot in your videos and with architects in general. It is a confusing word for me. So could you make a video explaining what it means exactly. Thanks.
I counted four commercials in this sponsored video. I understand that you need to make money, but having so many commercials in an already sponsored video feels excessive! Also, are you only making sponsored videos now? It seems that way.
I don’t mind the commercials bc it’s a way to support the channel and the content
It's one big add.
People gotta make money bro but i feel you
The production quality alone is worth the ad spots.
The monitor so close to, and basically facing, the light from the outside cannot be practical.
Not if the window faces north or if you live where it’s grey and cloudy all the time.
But I want all the RGBssssss
I dont have G.A.S. because I think it will make me better. I just like gear too much.
too many adds
I agree. I made a similar comment - I counted four commercials in this already-sponsored video. 🙄
go premium or get adblock extension
Otherwise, I always love watching your content, when my ADHD is interested in the topic.
got me withthe GAS, unnecessary distractions researching stuff
