I think the problem is more if you only pick from one series like Hemnes or Malm because everything gets very "samey" and can look cheap. The tray tip is great. My living room will never ever be visited by a rug. How ever I imaging a rug in my living room it will add to the (visual) clutter. Leaving out the rug makes my not so large living room look larger and less cluttered.

The karate chop does NOT make your space look better, because most people do it so severely that it makes the pillow look like it has ears (just as you did in this video). If you do the chop, do it a bit more subtly so that it looks more aesthetic and less like you’re trying to turn your pillow into a bunny.

Nothing Ikea ever gives an expensive expression even when it is expensive. Their quality has suffered tremendously and on top of that, people who recognize and even buy Ikea things, always thought of it as cheap. Ikea is a choice, a lifestyle, and sells so well because they always had all of their furniture on display outside their ridiculously stressful maze shops.

Designers still need to put in the work and research where to find the best and affordable pieces- and being familiar with products from other outlets is key- like I recently saw a quality built desk at Staples- being familiar with what you are likely to find at outlets like Lowes, Home Sense, Home Goods, At Home, Way Fair, Home Depot and local thrift stores is important. It is safe to move away from the cookie cutter appearance of an IKEA dependent home

Ok, so. What is this fixation with making things look "expensive"?. Why can't it be just "because it looks nice" or "because I like it" or "because it looks neat and organized"? Why are always pushing for things to be or look expensive? Are we changing our living spaces for what other people think of them? or are we doing it for ourselves?. Clearly is for others, since I will always know the cost, even if it "looks" expensive.

well, sophisticated has for very long only been accessible to people who had a good amount of money, precisely because places like (current) Ikea didn't exist. @Poppy Seed Sophistication is most often paired with high society, which is made of people who make a lot of money and have expensive furnishings. Sophistication and cheap are not normal companions. Walmart is cheap, and most of the decor looks cheap and doesn't pull together nicely. Crate and Barrel is expensive and helps make a home look magazine worthy. No magazine has Walmart-like decor. Except Walmart.

It's insane how much cheaper Ikea is in Canada vs Australia. I was finding these prices a bit low, because there are some items I've looked at before. So I checked. That lighting strip you put under your sideboard, which costs 20 CAD (which I'm guessing should be under 23 CAD with tax) costs 47.85 CAD, equivalent of course, in Australia. It's aboslutely insane. It's close to 25 CAD difference for the exact same, mass-produced item! And GST in Aus is not that high, just 10%. Mental.

You're right about that. We pay more for everything here which sucks. But that's only because we are so far away from the rest of world. • @miyounova
      @miyounova Год назад +2

@@audrablue515 no, that's a often a myth. When things are manufactured in China, like in the case of ikea, they need to be shipped to Europe, Canada or Aistralia. If anything it's probably a bit closer to Aus.

I used to dream about that Langfjall office chair, because of an artist on RUclips who has a lovely home office and she has that same chair. I tried it at the store and it felt great at first, but when I got one and started using it at home, I realized it actually hurts my tail bone!
The stitching that goes down the middle was also very tight creating a ridge that made it even more uncomfortable. Hit or miss... Works for some people, but here's my experience in case anyone loves the look of this chair too. I sold mine. :(

Just go for higher quality and chose pillows with down-like synthetic fillings, found in the bedroom-department rather than cheap cushion pads. Feather cushions almost always involve animal cruelty so they are not recommendable. If you had said; mass-produced items with personality and one-of-a-kind look, I would have applauded you... because you are good at this, really good. Many of your suggestions are sound if one is on the lookout for items which doesn't scream mass-produced. But that doesn't mean mass-produced equals affordable... think cars. Anyway, I especially liked those handmade-looking items. And don't worry about pronunciation. I'm Norwegian, and I know my English sentences are wonky but I'd never let that stop me from commenting.

You speak and write better English than many Americans. I mean, just try to read the comments section. I am frequently floored by the poor spelling and sentence structure. Let's not talk about grammar. So much fun thinking, "Did they just say what I thought they said?". Lol. @tonje_gram 😘😁🤔

I don’t understand all the complaints in the comments about using the words “look expensive…” like bro if you WANT A CHEAP RAGGEDY LOOK …..IF YOU LIKE to give a BROKE TEA …….GO DO THAT!!! Nobody is stopping YOU……People are ANNOYING !! Take your simple a$$Es to Dollar Tree a chill ….be happy be at peace

Please, please stop adding ‘ality’ onto the end of words that shouldn’t and don’t need it … words like function and intention …. You are verbally cluttering which kills me, like home clutter drives you nuts!

Otherwise a very nice video, but:
The point about cheap cushions looking too perfect. The opposite of this is "this pillow looks so shitty, it must be expensive". I do not support that kind of thinking.

With chairs, especially office chairs, looks should never ever be put above ergonomics... unless they are decoration only. What good is a pretty home that you'll never see because you spend all the time at a chiropractic and are hurting a lot?

I bought a fjadrar pillow for my bed and oof it smelled lol. I gave it a couple of days out in the open before stuffing it in a cushion cover. it feels nice to squish. pretty nice pillow to have and hug imo.

Wow, so many negative comments here about the word 'expensive'. Whilst I agree that wealthp0rn isn't cool, this video isn't about that. In this context, I take expensive to mean 'quality', which to me always feels comfy, beautiful and mindful.

As an environmentalist and furniture designer, I am trying to do my best to encourage others NOT to support big-box stores such as IKEA. Not only are their products quick-fix options with short shelf-lives, but their production methods are usually unethical and unsustainable. Not to mention how big-box stores kill local economies.
I know it maybe difficult for some households to consider, but nudging consumers towards purchasing higher-quality products that last longer is ultimately a better investment of your money; and getting people there, is essentially where our challenge exists.
Having said that, I still find Daniel Titchener's channel to be a beacon of inspiration for creative solutions to spatial design.

I’ve got plenty of IKEA furniture that’s 10-15 years old and still looks brand new. This short shelf life idea about ikea isn’t true unless you’re buying the supper cheap stuff.

Love the video 👏👏👏👏👏. I have some of the items that you mentioned ☺️. Just a little tip that I like to use, when buying the pillow inserts buy one size up, it fills the cover better and makes it look even more plush and luxurious. I need to pick up a few table lamps, we have a large open plan kitchen/living/dining and thankfully multiple times of lighting but I think that we could still benefit from extra lights. I also love to light candles, especially in winter, it gives a soft organic light that I find cozy and relaxing.
