One thing that bothers me is why the aim should be to look "expensive"? Why not just "nice", "beautiful", "sophisticated"? I see and hear the word a lot in the interior design community and I could easily imagine it makes people feel bad for not having loads of money. Isn't it something we could be more aware of? Thanks for your work!
well, sophisticated has for very long only been accessible to people who had a good amount of money, precisely because places like (current) Ikea didn't exist. When it becomes totally normal to be able to get sophisticated-looking items for aa low budget, then the expression "looking expensive" won't be needed.
@Poppy Seed Sophistication is most often paired with high society, which is made of people who make a lot of money and have expensive furnishings. Sophistication and cheap are not normal companions. Walmart is cheap, and most of the decor looks cheap and doesn't pull together nicely. Crate and Barrel is expensive and helps make a home look magazine worthy. No magazine has Walmart-like decor. Except Walmart.
One of my favorite clutter hacks is just having a single drawer where you can throw in ANYTHING you don't want to see laying around. A box, or whatever item you like also works great. Just remember to go through it every few months to declutter and possibly get rid of unwated things (preferably through donating)
Yes! I have a round cloth hamper in every main room. Anything that doesn’t belong in the room gets tossed into it. Do I want a hamper on every room? Not really… but it looks 10 times nicer than clutter everywhere.
As someone who is Swedish it is actually so funny seeing someone trying to pronounce the product names, some were pretty good and a few were really butchered (I understand why you apologized after the pillows haha) Great video!
Exactly my thought as well.. Hahaha I can't even imagine how it is for an English-speaking customer how they are talking to IKEA-staff and mentioning the names for the item they are looking for? How are the staff pronouncing it, and will the customer and staff understand each other?
I rarely comment on videos. This was a beautiful and thoughtful video. The tray and rug tip were really golden nugget for me. I really hope you make more of these videos in which someone can easily implement these tips in their house and also teach about house keeping/aesthtic/buying/or whatever. I enjoyed the whole video even though Ikea is not officially available in my country(but I have visited their stores when I lived abroad and I love them).
3:35 as someone with ADHD and general issues with keeping my house clean let alone tidy trays or just marked areas really help! Just be sure to have the tray be large enough for the intended use and be mindful of the sides Another is friction - for me cupboard doors are enough so, for example, I have open trashcan and drying rack that is for most my plates and glassware. I get that open shelving can be messy looking but if you limit it to the items you use weekly it isn't that bad and way better than the alternative for me
I used to dream about that Langfjall office chair, because of an artist on RUclips who has a lovely home office and she has that same chair. I tried it at the store and it felt great at first, but when I got one and started using it at home, I realized it actually hurts my tail bone! The stitching that goes down the middle was also very tight creating a ridge that made it even more uncomfortable. Hit or miss... Works for some people, but here's my experience in case anyone loves the look of this chair too. I sold mine. :( Saving this video for when I can afford a home makeover. I love IKEA and don't mind if my house looks like a showroom, in fact, I wish I could get that moody lighting, and cozy, tidy but not "sterile" looking. I live for rugs and pillows and can't wait to get these for our bedrooms and sofa.
Thank you, Daniel. I bought the off-white Stoense carpets for my Mum to her bedroom. She loves it, it is really beautiful and good quality. And quite cheap too.
It's insane how much cheaper Ikea is in Canada vs Australia. I was finding these prices a bit low, because there are some items I've looked at before. So I checked. That lighting strip you put under your sideboard, which costs 20 CAD (which I'm guessing should be under 23 CAD with tax) costs 47.85 CAD, equivalent of course, in Australia. It's aboslutely insane. It's close to 25 CAD difference for the exact same, mass-produced item! And GST in Aus is not that high, just 10%. Mental. (Other than that, loved the video as always!)
You're right about that. We pay more for everything here which sucks. But that's only because we are so far away from the rest of world. Of course that can have its advantages (hello Covid border closures) but it does nothing for those of us who want to buy goods in the variety that the rest of the world has.
@@audrablue515 no, that's a often a myth. When things are manufactured in China, like in the case of ikea, they need to be shipped to Europe, Canada or Aistralia. Be wary of ergonomic chairs with no armrests... they might look sleeker but they are far less supportive and you might end up having to switch it out for a truly ergonomic one.
There are great pillows with synthetic filling that are plumpable and not stiff at all! Just go for higher quality and chose pillows with down-like synthetic fillings, found in the bedroom-department rather than cheap cushion pads. Great tips, just one thing: the ikea desk chair you mention doesn’t have any armrests. Armrests are super important from an ergonomic point of view, I’m afraid. I agree that the chair looks good, but it wouldn’t be the best idea to use it as a home office chair
I'm not sure design needs another IKEA video. Maybe look at some Nick Lewis (who is also in Canada) videos regarding local retailers and design wholesalers who take it to the next level & holistic trends. Keep it up !
IKEA is a global brand for his global viewers, I live in Portugal so I can easily just pop into the store down the road and get those items. What I have taken away from the video is how to style your home so that it looks more high end. I can take those principles and get items from a different retailer.
Nick Lewis also does IKEA videos too. It’s an accessible and widespread store that’s easy to work with, so it’s helpful for lots of people getting started on a budget
The karate chop does NOT make your space look better, because most people do it so severely that it makes the pillow look like it has ears (just as you did in this video). If you do the chop, do it a bit more subtly so that it looks more aesthetic and less like you’re trying to turn your pillow into a bunny.
I got the Stoense rug for living room, really nice product. I also got some of their pillows, I would like to get more, but IKEA has a on-line page that is not "true" on colors. I know the store fairly well, so I can guess, and they do use a similar color scheme, however, I do not want to order a green rug and hope I got the hue correct. It is frustrating!
The tray tip is great. My living room will never ever be visited by a rug. How ever I imaging a rug in my living room it will add to the (visual) clutter. Leaving out the rug makes my not so large living room look larger and less cluttered. Now to be honest, I do not have a minimalist living room. With for instance two couches, a bookcase with about 500 books and around 30 plants. In a living room that is 21 square meters.
Designers still need to put in the work and research where to find the best and affordable pieces- and being familiar with products from other outlets is key- like I recently saw a quality built desk at Staples- being familiar with what you are likely to find at outlets like Lowes, Home Sense, Home Goods, At Home, Way Fair, Home Depot and local thrift stores is important. It is safe to move away from the cookie cutter appearance of an IKEA dependent home
Nothing Ikea ever gives an expensive expression even when it is expensive. Their quality has suffered tremendously and on top of that, people who recognize and even buy Ikea things, always thought of it as cheap. Ikea is a choice, a lifestyle, and sells so well because they always had all of their furniture on display outside their ridiculously stressful maze shops.
Great video, which I can actually relate to given we have ikea in the UK! Please keep these videos coming haha they’re amazing and simple to understand! Is there anyway I can reach out to you to get advice on a design tip I’m after?
Temperature controlled kettle, and pre-ground coffee, what am i seeing?! 11:37 If you want to elevate your coffee experience inexpensively, I'd recommend a hand-grinder 1zpresso have some great ones. Amazing video, thank you for the inspiration!
Always so funny to hear English speakers pronounce the IKEA product names. IKEA names a lot of products after places in Sweden, but sometimes they make up things that we as Swedes don't even understand 😂
Wow, so many negative comments here about the word 'expensive'. Whilst I agree that wealthp0rn isn't cool, this video isn't about that. In this context, I take expensive to mean 'quality', which to me always feels comfy, beautiful and mindful.
Why should you strive for a more expensive-looking home? If you had said; mass-produced items with personality and one-of-a-kind look, I would have applauded you... because you are good at this, really good. Many of your suggestions are sound if one is on the lookout for items which doesn't scream mass-produced. But that doesn't mean mass-produced equals affordable... think cars. Anyway, I especially liked those handmade-looking items. And don't worry about pronunciation. I'm Norwegian, and I know my English sentences are wonky but I'd never let that stop me from commenting.
You speak and write better English than many Americans. I mean, just try to read the comments section. I am frequently floored by the poor spelling and sentence structure. Let's not talk about grammar. So much fun thinking, "Did they just say what I thought they said?". Lol. @tonje_gram 😘😁🤔
Please don't sacrifice physical health for aesthetics though. Even if the backsupport may be fine, the lack of armrests is *really* not good for your arms wrists and shoulders. Unless you have a highly deep desk that lets you fully rest up to your elbows, and you have to sit at your desk frequently, please get something with armrests. I know the Langfjall also comes in a version with armrests. Maybe slightly less stylish, but your arms and wrists will thank you.
What I like about this video isn’t the products recommended, but rather the concepts behind the implementation of them. I hope you do more like this Daniel. Cheers

Great video, which I can actually relate to given we have ikea in the UK! Please keep these videos coming haha they’re amazing and simple to understand! Is there anyway I can reach out to you to get advice on a design tip I’m after?
فيديو مفيد جدا شكرا ،استفدت جدا منه وخصوصا بشأن السجاده،شكرا على الترجمه للعربيه
Weird question, but whats your desktop background, i really like it.
This is pleasant to watch to say the least. Great content
Temperature controlled kettle, and pre-ground coffee, what am i seeing?! 11:37 If you want to elevate your coffee experience inexpensively, I'd recommend a hand-grinder 1zpresso have some great ones. Amazing video, thank you for the inspiration!
Great video as always! Thanks for the tips. QQ: what couch do you have at 2:48?
The map at the start explains on a geographical level why IKEA's HQ is in Delft, the Netherlands. Just look at where the centrepoint +- is.
Always so funny to hear English speakers pronounce the IKEA product names. IKEA names a lot of products after places in Sweden, but sometimes they make up things that we as Swedes don't even understand 😂
Can you design a living room that can turn into a work space where the TV would also serves as a desk monitor.
Wow, so many negative comments here about the word 'expensive'. Whilst I agree that wealthp0rn isn't cool, this video isn't about that. In this context, I take expensive to mean 'quality', which to me always feels comfy, beautiful and mindful.
Is it worth have a rug of you have a narrow living room?
what is this sofa? beautiful!
Great video! Quick question tho: where do you find your wallpapers? Love the one on your desktop
I know that he usually has his own design on the screen of his computer, I think that you can buy it from him, but I can't remember how 🤦
Ah, I got some new ideas. Maybe, not everything is IKEA products. But, yeah.. thanks, for the recommendation.
May I ask which shirts you wear in the video?
SUCH a great video wow what an icon
I would love to send you the plan of my apartment! What is the best way to do this please?
I found the place to submit 🥰
Please don't sacrifice physical health for aesthetics though. Even if the backsupport may be fine, the lack of armrests is *really* not good for your arms wrists and shoulders. Unless you have a highly deep desk that lets you fully rest up to your elbows, and you have to sit at your desk frequently, please get something with armrests. I know the Langfjall also comes in a version with armrests. Maybe slightly less stylish, but your arms and wrists will thank you.
I hate those bloody karate chop on cushions I have to straighten them 😂
Hi 👋 what bar stools do you have?
This is fantastic, thanks 😊
always thought the chopped pillow look was tacky, why mess up a good looking pillow to make it look like its old?
This video is awesome!! Thank you very much, I’ve used your advice previously and my home interior is so much better!
Damn you for making me blow on my phone, that icon must catch out so many people 😂
@@ElsieJay haha yes
Where is the chair from? The one in the living room
