    Prince didn't even get to rehearse with the rest of the musicians on stage. When he showed up for a rehearsal, the guy who did the first solo kept doing all the solos in the song while Prince watched and strummed along. The producer got pissed and told Petty to talk to him so that Prince could rehearse his solo as well. Prince told the producer "don't worry about it" and said he'd do the solo at the end, and left. So nobody knew what he was gonna do when his solo starts. That's one reason Petty kept giving Prince the sign to keep going, he said you could tell "something special" was happening on stage.

    • @aj71169
      @aj71169 4 года назад +48

      I think a lot of people miss that subtlety in the performance. To think about Prince, used to being the bandleader and doing whatever he wants, checking with Petty to find out just how much space he could take. And Petty, being able to read the band’s performance with someone they hadn’t rehearsed with, knowing how much space to give to make it special without being overdone. 👏

      There's even more to the story. A week or so before this show Rolling Stone magazine ran a piece saying that Prince was overrated as a guitar player. No one on stage knew that prince was going to go off the way he did except Harrisons son. This solo was a big FU to Rolling Stone Mag.

    This is a “once in a lifetime” performance! We’re blessed to have it recorded! I liken Prince to a modern version of Mozart. The similarities are many. What isn’t mentioned is that this took place at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, where earlier in the night, Prince had been inducted! An absolute prodigy, Prince was a virtuoso guitarist who could’ve played lead for almost any band in the world.
    Also noteworthy, is the fact that Tom Petty and George Harrison were the best of friends. As well as Jeff Lynn was another member of their close knit circle. They’re families were intertwined, which leads to another point. The young man playing acoustic guitar during this performance, isn’t just another artist. He’s actually Dhanni Harrison, son of the great George Harrison! So this truly was a very special performance! Sadly, not long after, we lost both Prince and Tom Petty. Gods Speed. RIP

The producers of that event & some of the musicians thought he was being shady. Prince has worked hard to be the musician he became. That man was hard working 24/7

    Prince has been known many times to have a bodyguard type guy who stands next to the stage to catch him, also that guitar that got thrown up in the air, no one on stage or in the audience ever saw it come back down. There’s a mystery for ya.

    I was lucky enough to see Prince in concert 5X. If you want to see something AMAZING, watch his Sign o' the times concert. It was just released about a month ago, on You Tube. Even if you are not a Prince fan, just his showmanship will be inspiring. Great reaction video! My deearest Prince, I will miss you until I get to meet you in heaven 💜

    Nice little coffee cup, Suze! My favourite version is by the late, great Mr Jeff Healey. He was a blind guitarist who played like a steel guitar, on his lap.

    When Prince looked over at Tom Petty it wasn't to say, "I know you Love it", he was asking permission to keep going.

    Amazing how George Harrison's son (Dhani) is the spitting image of his dad. He looks exactly like his dad looked, when the Beatles debuted on the Ed Sullivan show almost 60 yrs ago.

    George Harrison wrote this song when he was with the Beatles.
    This awesomeness starts with From Left to Right Front Row: Steve Winwood (Beginning Guitar Solos), Jeff Lynne (Vocals, Guitars from ELO), Tom Petty (Vocals, Guitars), Dhani Harrison (George Harrison's Son, who this version was for at the RRHoF Ceremonies), someone on guitar that I am not familiar with & the Prince!!
    All of these guys killed it, but Prince was on another level here!

    So this is rock & roll hall of fame ‘04. George Harrison was being posthumously being inducted as a solo artist/singer-songwriter in his own right having been inducted years earlier as a member of The Beatles, although Lennon & McCartney were the dominant songwriters for TB’s this was written by GH and featured on The Beatles White Album (‘68). Some on here amongst a slew of world-class musicians are Tom Petty, ELO’s Jeff Lynne, Steve Winwood and the young guitarist behind and to the left of Tom Petty, that’ll be DHANI HARRISON, George’s son who is the mirror image of a young George 😊🇬🇧🇺🇸
