Prince and The Revolution - Purple Rain (Live in Syracuse, March 30, 1985)

Official Video of Prince - Purple Rain Live at Carrier Dome in Syracuse, NY on March 30, 1985 original released on Prince & The Revolution: Live (1986). 2020 Audio Remaster by Bernie Grundman. The remastered audio from the entire concert is now available in digital format for the first time
I know you guys loved the studio version of "Purple Rain," so you will go nuts over this live version! Both the video and audio were remastered/upgraded when the whole Syracuse show was released on Blu-ray in 2022. Prince is my favorite artist of all time, and I was born and raised in Minnesota, his home state. I do a podcast on RUclips about him, called "The Purple Knights Podcast." Please check it out, thanks!
STILL THE GREATEST VERSION EVER RECORDED OF THIS SONG.THIS WHOLE CONCERT IS A LEGEND IN MUSIC HISTORY !!!!!!!
I actually enjoy the paisley park 1999 version of this more but this is certainly LEGENDARY 🤗
I prefer the Purple Rain performance at the AMA’s ….but this is a GREAT performance too! He was the best to ever do it LIVE. Hands down he shines best when performing live. Miss his presence here on earth 💜 O(+>
Every live version of this song he recorded is the greatest version of this song.
Completely agree plus not many people see the guitar change
This is a close 2nd. The 1st for me is 1990 la Coruna Spain. Mayte was in the audience if I'm not mistaken. The solo takes me abit further than this one.
There are no words that can do this performance justice! Simply epic!
The guitar solo is beyond comprehension!
I'm 59 lucky enough to live during his time. RIP Prince
59 also and blessed to see him 3 times..really no performers comparable today😢💜
I owe him so much.
That is what a guitar means... feeling the vibe and giving it to the audience.
Story time. My friends and I resented Purple Rain in High School. We were hardliners who were fans during the years when he was considered fringe or underground status. In Prince fan parlance we're called "First Dynasty or Kingdom" and our wheelhouse is the "Dirty Mind" through 1999 albums. We liked When Doves Cry because it was different sounding but thought everything else was a sellout. When this concert was released on VHS we got to this song and something weird came over the room that I can only in my 50's now put words to. We realized that someone like him was too good to belong to a few, when he played that outro solo he belonged to the pantheon and the world. Watching this in silence with my friends all those years ago I realized we were letting him go. Kind of like watching your kid pull out of the driveway for college and you just know things will never be the same again. We thought mainstream acceptance would weaken our appreciation but it didn't, it just changed and evolved.
You are so SPOT ON. 😊
Get back to me when your wheelhouse was For You on vinyl and onwards. That was mine and people I knew were in agreement with me that Purple Rain was a classic Prince album moving in to a new period with a different sound (see Computer Blue) while still retaining Prince vibes from Dirty Mind and 1999 (Darling Nicki lyrics, Let's Go crazy solo). Every Prince fan knew that he changed up his sound and style on every album (for instance you can instantly tell something off 1999, even the B-Sides, just by the Lindstrom drum sound) so I will never get people being surprised that Purple Rain had a different sound, especially since he actually gave over some composition control.
Then again, sounds like the same sort of people that called Metallica sellouts for Load and Reload rather than just accepting they wanted to do something different and it wasn't for you.
@@knytestorme Metallica invited their critics because they had famously said they would never sell out and never go on MTV. It didn't take them long before they did.
That Song played live made me an instant fan!!! I had no idea he was that talented on guitar! What they were playing for dance floors gave me no clue about that level of talent.
What a Treasure we have lost.
Prince was an E-fin beast on the guitar! And I'm a 55 yr old metal guy! 🤘
I agree & I'm a 60 something metal guy
Absolutely, he was up there with greats.. Hendrix and Beck
@@Joshualuv13Jimmy Page Stevie Ray Vaughan Tommi Iommi Slash
Have to respect a "metal fan" that can appreciate Prince's guitar work. I bet that made you appreciate even the metal guitar you play aswell!
OMG! I was there. When I left I couldn't talk. I lost my voice screaming.
Probably one of the greatest performances of all time. Seriously.
Seeing Prince live was always amazing. One of the best performers to ever grace a stage. You can't teach charisma and that special " It" factor that only a few performers and musicians have. Mesmerizing could do it all as a musician who just lived to create and play music. Its hard to believe he is so overlooked as one of the greatest guitarists of all time.
Thank u for reacting to Prince. He truly was a National Treasure for the U.S, the 8th Wonder of the World, God's Gift to the human race. RiP dear Prince ❤
I have never seen this performance. It is the best live version of Purple Rain that I've seen and it was freaking awesome!!!!!
Along with a couple of friends, me and my wife(who we found out just two weeks earlier was pregnant with our first child) went to see Prince and The Revolution on Jan 6th 1985 when the legendary artist came through Atlanta. We had the best time of our lives that night all for the price of 17.50 each!!!
Glad you busted a move on that! I missed the train.
not many people in a 40 year old video can make me feel stuff like this Prince was a gift from god amazing
OMG, such wonderful memories, such a big part of my life back then. This made me cry like a baby. A good cry though. RIP PRINCE, you are dearly missed. Thanks for this one guys.😘♥️
Reading that it made you cry almost got me. He is the only performer or celebrity I ever shed tears for when he passed. People have no clue what he meant to his real fans and how his music was with us for pretty much the majority of our lives.
You should also react to the movie…and the Super Bowl half time performance.
When I saw this was a LIVE version, I hoped it would be his performance at the Super Bowl halftime show, when it was pouring rain. It made it PERFECT. This was, of course, amazing though. I get emotional seeing him perform. Can you imagine being there for this?
Guys you picked a good one....the talk about the vocals..but man he is one hell of a guitar player!!!
Was at this show. Lived in Rochester, NY and drove to Syracuse to see this show. AMAZING! One of the best live performers ever. The Prince & The Revolution craze at this time was surreal. The talent is unbelievable! People talk about the greatest guitarist of all-time but Prince is rarely mentioned and he should be. The dude could play the (bleep) out of a guitar, amongst other instruments.
Well, Clapton thinks he was the best guitarist in the world!
Prince Superbowl reaction. Best show ever.
Literally in tears! RIP Price! You are amazing!
UM GENIO... PRINCE
What a privilege just to be alive while he was alive on this home called earth.
I was a teenager maybe 13 ish.
What a slice of earthly time we had and now the fine example Prince left for all of us I a honoured to be a member of this planet and during his time only a small slice of time future generation to be born will say what a time those people living had while he was alive .
These people come along and we happened to bump into His time what a heavenly gift we were left.
PRINCE! He was such an ICON! One in a billion, he had more talent than any other artist I know & that's saying a lot. What a legend! Another one has gone way too soon! RIP, Prince! Loved your reaction, you two are one in the same, couple goals 100%! Sending much love, peace & happiness to both of yous! 🫶🏼✌🏼👏🏼💯💄💋
I love Prince so much, what a music icon. Music that brings tears to my eyes.
Prince was a freak of nature musically, and i mean that in the upmost complimentary way. Unbelievable Ridiculously gifted
I saw Prince in concert once - it was in February 2016 and it was just him on the piano. It was an incredible night and I’m so glad I went because he died a couple of months later. A tragedy we lost him so soon.
Prince was so amazing live. I was fortunate enough to see him several times, including being in the audience at First Avenue when they recorded the original video, in 1984. Best decade to grow up in.
Wow that’s incredible, I’m so disappointed I never got to see him live or appreciate him when he was with us, I’ve only become a huge fan recently
Prince isn't playing the guitar, the guitar is a part of him. That's what made him a guitar great.
Prince is eternal 🕊♥️🕊
THATS why they compare Him to Hendrix.....such an unique Soud only He could play....by the Way,these special created/designed Guitars were exclusively builed for him over here in Germany !
I think Prince is fantastic and i like sign o the times best and he was a great guitar player bud only Stevie RV was close to Hendrix
Google Shh Prince Detroit 2004.....it's live in concert & Guitar solo is 🔥🔥🔥🔥
thnx for the tip its great didnt knew that one
Thats not accurate - His Main guitar is Japanese and the Cloud was built in Minnesota
As a huge Prince fan already in my teens, I was 17 years old, when this concert was transmitted live via satellite to all over the world from Syracuse New York. Living in Copenhagen Denmark, I had to stay up all night to watch the concert. - I have seen Prince many times live. BUT still to this day, THIS concert stands for me, as my absolute nr. 1concert I have ever seen and heard. Even I did not even attend the concert but only watched it on screen. - AND this Purple Rain solo is by far the best solo I have ever heard. Prince was not only a huge talented musician - HE WAS THE MUSIC - THE MOZART OF OUR GENERATION
I saw him live in Glasgow the year before he died, when he performed this song is the greatest experience of my life
Thank you for this video.....he's amazing
Ok...... Hadn't seen this..... THANK YOU !!!! middle of the night , LIFE CHANGING !!! ☮
That was absolutely amazing. I’ve never seen this version of Purple Rain. What a guitar solo! Flawless. The whole vibe from beginning to end had me enthralled. Love it!!!!!!
That's just amazing , holy shit. Do Prince' Super Bowl half time show.
But make sure to react to the whole halftime show not just the song Purplle Rain. ☔️
@@tracyface1999 You're absolutely right.
Not a single living artist today, doesn’t matter who you pick, is seeing him any day of the week. I’m pretty sure any living artist u pick will say the same. He also treated performance as a blood sport.
Every story about Prince makes hi,m so magical.
He was simply the best
Lifelong Prince fam here, Prince always gave you your money worth in concert. I can't believe how many people were so surprised at how he could play guitar so amazingly. He has been playing guitar and so many other instruments his whole career. Prince is music!!
WE just did not hear this talent at the dance clubs... We had to witness it for ourselves.
Try Computer Blue from the movie Purple Rain. So hot. I saw this tpur in Kentucky in 1984. My 1st concert at 18. It was surreal. Our colors and everyone in their Princriest fashion. It was total heaven . We tried to get backstage but a no go but had great seats. Im 57 saw many many legends and live shows and Prunce fan since middle school when he was totally a taboo sort of artist. Purple Rain came out summer before college and it was insane. This tour was spectacular. When I see the Syracuse and Atlanta concerts pretty darn close to what I remember. It was transformative. Best show I ever saw. Missed seeing Elvis but I saw Prince!!
what a genius. Please please do "All the critics love you in Montreaux" thats sooo funky and great guitar work
I was lucky enough to see this concert 6 times. 1985 was a great time to be 18.
Prince was doing a bathroom break and changing into new clothes during the early "break" of this song while Wendy played rhythm guitar and passed out flowers. This was the finale after all. This 6 minute intro was not by accident. But when Prince came back from his break? Holy fucking hell. What a finale. If you include the "orchestral" outro, this is a 20+ minute version of Purple Rain. Just Gorgeous. If you have ever questioned whether Prince is a guitar god, this is fucking proof that he is. PERIOD. DONE. I bought this VHS in 1985 "Prince & The Revolution Live" in Syracuse, NY. Best live performance of Purple Rain ever!!! 17 minutes!! This was my second reaction, I love you guys, you get it.
This is the greatest performance from an artist ever done, because not only was he the lead singer, lead guitar player, but also he created the most lazer focused energy on himself as the complete entertainment by any artist in memory.
purple rain will always be one of my favorites song of prince i like how they took there time on this live version of purple rain.
one of the best reactions ever
It was AWESOME to be there! I saw the same show in my hometown Oakland, CA. All Price concerts give you your moneys worth. Glad you got to watch it. The entire concert film is AWESOME!
That second solo... The Man left it all on the stage!!! Holy Smoke. It was Purple Rain and Prince playing live on an awards show in the eighties that made me an instant fan!
Twice in one day is flipping awesome. Big Texas love to Y'all!
top 30 guitar heros for sure
I always thought what he did in the Orange Bowl during this tour when I first got to see him saving my Ponderosa Steakhouse Busboy money to buy a ticket would go down all time, but he always found a way to do this song and take it somewhere different every tour stop and in Syracuse he again did something truly special.. If this doesn't reach down into your soul, you must be dead inside.
Prince made some iconic music videos, but his live performances were something else. Check out his covers of"creep", "motherless child", and "play that funky music white boy/Inglewood swinging". Epic. His halftime show at the Superbowl was and still is the greatest ever.
There will never be anybody like Prince again. No matter what they say Prince is the GOAT. oh and just FYI Travis you're cute
my favorite Artists
Prince is this only artist/performer who could give me the chills listening to him.
What a loss… he was amazing
Seeing this live in 85 on toir...its even more beautiful... My friend and I cried though the whole thing singing along.
I HAVE NEVER SEEN THIS VIDEO BEFORE !!!! THANKS GUYS......OMG OMG OMG !!!
The best that's ever been.
Never saw this live video......liked the hell out of it....damn!

Hey Travis and Suzi, thanks for doing this reaction for me. I'm SO glad you enjoyed it. ROCK ON! ☔ 💜 🎸
I was lucky enough to see him twice.
Nothing compares to Prince
Thank you Wolf Hunters.Blessings
His guitar work is LIQUID BLISS
I have heard this many times before. But I get speechless everytime I hear it……I get goosbombs all over, this is nearly unbelivebel omg what a genuis he was…..I love him for ever 💜 RIP daling Prince 🙏🏻 and Thank you for all your magnificent, amazing music…….thank you to your reacter….very great, fabelous react 😊
I live an hour from Syracuse NY and I so wish I was old enough to be there!!! Awesome reaction yall thank you!!
WOW! March 30, 1985 and I'm just seeing this, after his passing in 2016, people started to release/upload all those videos they been holding on to for years.
Hello you 2. What a great song and especially an artist. Unfortunately he left us too soon. The film is also beautiful. I would be happy if you two pretty guys react to Guns N Roses Live again. There is a really brilliant version of Patience live in Paris 1992. But you definitely have to listen to the previous intro by Wild Horses. You will not regret it. I would really be very happy
Love this !! 💔💓💓💓🎶🎸🎶🎤
He was simply anointed.
If you musically perform long enough there is a moment when musicians become transcendent and go to another level. That's what happened here with Prince.
Tapped into something beyond. A timeless song ☔
Liv4luv 0(+->
he is a legend
I was lucky enough to see Prince in 1984 for this tour. It was restricted or rated R and you had to be 18. I was 14 and begged my Dad to get me tickets. He did, we got in, Epic night❤
Good effort!
Prince Live is like no other. Saw him back to back nights and 80%+ of his set was different night over night-incredible! His ‘One Night Alone Medley’ covered multiple songs over predominantly him just playing piano was Amazing. His artistry was just insane. If you haven’t, you should check out his Royal Badness in a black and white version of Do Me Baby, My Guitar Gentle Weeps epic guitar solo, Joy and Repetition, various appearances on Jay Leno, Arsenio Hall, Oprah, Saturday Night Live, Ellen, George Lopez and any of his concert films! Even his covers are incredible play that funky music
EPIC !!
He would improvise and add tunes within the tune. Always had to be creative as new music was running through him all the time. He said it was a curse and a blessing. Imagine talking to someone and creating a new song in his mind at the same time. He once said he often had to leave a social situation because the music in his head was too strong. He also got bored easily, always wanting to move on with his creations. Listen to interviews with his first engineer for five years, Susan Rogers and you will understand the pressure such a genius was under, that admittedly he put himself under due to his great work ethic.
In 1985, when Prince was 26, he won the Oscar for Best Original Sound Score for the movie Purple Rain
You guys are awesome for doing this. Definitely a solid, epic performance!
All in high heels too !!!
Please react to Prince "Do me baby" live at the Capitol theater 1982
That Guitar was absolutely cryin !
The G.O.A.T. ...& the Greatest Guitar Player.....dont care what no one think...🎵🎶🎵......Google Shhh Prince Detroit 2004 ....Guitar Solo is 🔥🔥🔥
Prince is not dead, He Lives Forever in My Mind.l
HE lives. Saved from very bad people who wanted him dead for speaking out about the industry. He will return, if he choses to.
That Prince was a stone ROCK GOD, man!!!!!! If God created a better rocker, he must've kept it to Himself.🍇
love that beautiful almost blues riff on the intro wow
Epic 🔥💜
Wunderbar 🎉
