    When Prince performed the halftime show at the Superbowl, including this song, it started to rain right before he was due to take the stage. The Producer of the show called him and told him it was raining pretty hard and did he still want to do the show. Prince responded, "Can you make it rain harder?" It was an amazing show with the stadium lit up with purple lights and rain pouring down. You really should look up that video.

    In the movie, the girls in the band, Wendy and Lisa, wrote a song for Prince, but he kept ignoring them, not giving it the time of day. But in secret, he listened to it and worked on it on his own. Here he finally decides to perform the song on stage, to Wendy and Lisa's surprise.

      But as Wendy and Lisa themselves would say, "We did NOT write that song" Because Prince wrote it before the movie even started shooting.

    • @Ed7501
      @Ed7501 9 месяцев назад +17

      Of course Prince wrote that 100%. I was giving context to what was happening in relation to the storyline of the movie. Prince wrote PR. But in the movie, W&L wrote it. That goes to show how confident Prince was, willing to play like he didn't write PR 😂

      @Ed7501 you are 100% correct in contextualization, the actualization of your explanation for which you've shared, and the facts for which you gave support of the context for which you've presented. You are definitely a student of "Princeology" for sure sir.

    Being from Minnesota, Prince was loved for more than just his music. He gave millions to local charities and schools anonymously. You would often see him around town and at Timberwolves and Vikings games(he even wrote a song for the Vikings). He would also give impromptu concerts at his home/studios Paisley Park that were open to the public. To Minnesota he was just one of us..a regular guy. He loved Minnesota and Minnesota loved him back.

    Great that you reacted to this! As an aside, in 1985 I worked back-to-back Prince shows in Austin during the Purple Rain tour. In the afternoon before the first show i actually got to meet Stevie Ray Vaughn backstage, another guitar legend. If you have a chance I highly recommend checking out Prince's live performance of Purple Rain from Syracuse 1985. I was fortunate to see Prince live two more times in the coming years. This story of this scene goes back to the start of the movie when Prince is doing well with the band. Through the movie he begins to lose his way, and this performance is his way back in to the good graces of the club manager (the man with the sunglasses and the hat, who was not played by Forrest Whitaker 😊).

    Although I prefer a different genre of music, this is one of my favorite songs of all time. Prince was a one of a kind. There has never been another artist with the talent Prince had. And I don’t believe there ever will be. IMO there are no words that can describe just how great he was with his personal flaws and all. It is so sad that so many of the best artists leave us way too soon. You know we missed out on many more masterpieces with his passing. RIP Prince!!

    Prince was on his high school basketball team. The school is now a community center but there are pictures on the wall that includes Prince with the team. I live a a few blocks away from there and go there sometimes for community events/celebrations. The singing group Sound of Blackness rehearse there. Maybe give them a listen> Their latest song is "Woke" but there are so many more for which this 3X Grammy winning and Emmy nominated gospel group is known. They often performed at First Avenue, a music venue in Minneapolis where Prince often showed up to sing and dance with the crowd without notice. I believe this song was filmed at First Ave. The Revolution is Prince's band. The man in the hat is not Forest Whitaker. I think he's Billy Sparks, the First Ave manager.

    Prince donated to school music programs and instrument shops all over Minnesota, when MN school districts were cutting their music programs.
    I was a kid who benefitted from his humble generosity. It inspired me to act the same.
    I got the news of his passing from listening to the radio. I was driving and crying and I remember meeting the eyes of other drivers who were also tearful; Bunch of strangers in their cars, shocked, and connected by sudden grief.
    Surreal.

    I got to see Prince in concert once... it was at a stadium venue. The stage was in the middle and he played in the round. I never felt ignored. He constantly changed his facing so that all sides of the audience were included in his performance. One song he played on a grand piano and it rotated while he was playing. The show was spectacular. I rate it as one of the best shows I have ever seen. They had a video feed on the jumbotron overhead and it was like you were watching a movie. Smooth transitions. You could have sent that feed straight to a broadcast it was so professional. You didn't miss any of the performance even when he was facing away from your part of the audience. ...and he played the S*%T outta that stadium... No opening band... just him... and he did a double set. You got your money's worth and then some...

    I guess there is a generation gap. I am 65, 1 year younger than Prince so we are of the same time zone and thus his music is the sound track of my life. I saw him in concert twice. The first time was his Purple rain tour so I saw him perform the song and all of his songs from the movie. I bumped into him at a club a couple of years before his movie. Me and my friends always said wish we could get the kind of hot babes he got. So at this club I saw how he just did the 'predator look' a some girl across the room and got up, strolled over like nothing and reached out his hand and they headed to the dance floor. He danced with her normal, now gyrations. but all night long I was walking pass him thinking it was some guy trying to look like him until this girl I was talking to told me 'that is Prince'. I say generation gap because when I hear your wife say she have not listened to his music, my reaction is 'whattttttttttttt?'.
    Oh, one more thing, I spoke with Forrest Whittaker at a hamburger stand a in the mid 80s. I said, have I seen you in movies? he shyly said 'perhaps'. So, after I got my order i just looked back and said, 'I like your movies' he kind of looked up with a smile and shyly said 'thank you'.

    • @tommtommkin
      @tommtommkin 6 месяцев назад

      Where Prince is concerned there's a whole lot more to this story... What's his name? Prince and royal he was is and will forever be too. Then there's the doves... one of the symbols of the Holy Spirit is a dove... Then there are his guitars... ones called the cloud, again another symbol of the Holy Spirit. Then there's the little swirl on the cloud guitar which is a symbol of the wind which again is the symbol of the Holy Spirit. And even the love symbol guitar again and even bigger swirl on that guitar and the other part of it is in the shape of a trumpet, as in the trumpet of God, and held up right you have the shape of the world and the top of the guitar is pointing up to God... There are more signs of who Prince was meant to be down here a whole lot more. The Lord showed me these things when Prince left here. Peace.

    Your right, Prince could play 27 different instruments to concert standard, this tracks Backing was written by guitarist Wendy and keyboard player Lisa. The most interesting fact is that there is no studio version of the song, it was recorded live at its first performance in front of an audience using Sony's 'Black Truck' mobile recording rig along with numerous other tracks which feature on the album. The length was edited by some 7 minutes and 4 small overdubs were added in Paisley Park studio, but what you hear on the album and in the movie is 'live' and you can barely tell. And that is real genius, that was Prince Rogers Nelson....

    Yes, this is the official music video and a scene from the movie, but it was recorded live! I'm sure there were a handful of overdubs, but just think how incredible this is as a live performance as the first time it is released. Crazy!

    Some of the stuff was real. That is Billy Sparks club owner of First Avenue Entry in Minneapolis. I use to see Prince occasionally at Archie's Bunker. He would come and and just jam on Guitar with the band Dr. Mombo's combo. Some of the people in the band were part of Prince and the New Power Generation. In the 1980;s and 90's Minneapolis was a hot bed for music.

    Everyone wonders about Prince and purple everything. Think about it! He’s from Minnesota and was a huge Vikings fan. And we bleed purple in Minnesota. When he died everything in Minneapolis was lit in purple. This movie was filmed in Minneapolis. Most of in First Avenue in downtown Minneapolis. And the man could play 27 instruments.

    Prince has been my number 1 man since I was 10 yrs old with the catchy tune of Little Red Corvette.
    If you want to see more Prince performing live is where you catch all his magic and his band kick ass and take names. Check out his small club performance back in 91 the glam slam which was his and they perform Nothing Compares 2 U but what’s nice about it is they do it as a duet with his secret weapon Rosie Gaines. You’ll find out why I call her a secret weapon check it out.

    Okay, this will be a long reply but bear with me, it's worth it. Here's how this song came about:
    - The year was 1982 and Prince and the Revolution were touring to support the "1999" album. And long time friend and band guitarist Dez Dickerson (He's the one with the Bandana in the "1999" music video.) tells Prince that once the tour is over, he'll leave the band, citing exhaustion and finding Jesus as his reasons. Prince, being a very religious man himself, said that he understood and wished him all the luck in the world.
    - But that still left Prince with a problem, who could he ask to replace Dez in the band? Turns out, the replacement guitarist was already in his touring ensemble. Because keyboard player Lisa Coleman, brought along her lesbian partner Wendy Melvoin, and Pirnce overheard her playing these complex, very dreamy chords on her guitar.
    - So he asked Wendy to sit in during a band dress rehearsal, and the fit was so natural that everybody in the band knew that Dez's replacement had been found.
    - So after the tour wrapped up, and the Revolution was brought in to start work on what became the "Purple rain" album, Prince asked Wendy about those lush, complex chords. And so she started playing a sequence and Prince telling her to "Keep going" getting more and more involved, making what he heard make sense. So when Wendy told him she was getting tired and wanted to stop, he said "No problem, I got this." went home and the next day turned up with the song, almost fully finished.
    - Now on the Purple Rain album sleeve, it says that three songs, including "Purple Rain" itself, were recorded live at a fundraiser performance at Fifth Avenue in 1983. But that's only partly true. Because when you look up the actual performance, you can hear that it differs from what was eventually released.
    * Wendy's guitar was out of tune, so she was brought in to overdub her performance.
    * There was an extra verse about money, which was completely cut out.
    * Prince's outro solo was different and played on a different guitar, those little leads he does in between his singing, are from the original Fifth Avenue performance, that big solo was not.
