I agree with all of those recommendations! Also that this 1st introduction to Prince is him playing a part in a movie instead seeing him perform as himself makes a big difference. Check out some of the songs listed above & not from a purple rain movie clip, but a true prince performance or video. Funny thing though is the next scene in the movie would show you the high energy side of Prince you were expecting.
I think you're the first reactors who haven't been amazed by Prince. This dude is like a one man army! He can do it all and reached mega stardom by doing everything himself! He also had all the ladies. Everyone loves Prince 💜 Try Little Red Corvette next. That might be more your style and it's a good introduction to Prince
@@jamielazenby4090 Comparing Prince to MJ is dumb. They're completely different, in most every way. MJ was brought up to be a Pop musical success from birth. A whole team surrounded him from childhood to craft his career: choreographers, song-writers, career directors, producers, musicians. He was told to sing and dance, and did it very, very well - with a natural charisma that few posses. He is arguably the greatest POP star ever. If you want to make teen girls faint, he was your guy. If you want to hand him a guitar and have him tear the roof off a joint? No. Bass? No Keys? No. Not saying he's never touched an instrument, but he wasn't an accomplished concert instrumentalist. That was unprecedented, to this day. Able to play dozens of instruments, he is actually underrated in his singing ability. Per Google: "While David Bowie and Freddie Mercury both had ranges spanning four octaves, Prince could hit a gobsmacking B6" He continued producing, arranging, composing and performing through career that spanned more than 40 albums, and was an electric performer that did thousands of live concerts (sometimes up to 100 a year); and still found time to write and produce for other artists, including Sheena Easton, Sheila E. Sinead O'Conner, the Bangles, Kenny Rogers, Stevie Nicks, etc. Like I said, comparing them is dumb. The bottom line: From a musical talent measurement on all levels, Prince is top of the mountain. Pop Star: MJ, for sure. But he can't hold a candle to Prince when it comes to overall talent level.
@digitalvictory8266 totally agree 👍 prince 💜 Michael ❤️ and David were my heroes 💝💝💝 absolutely huge fans of all them all different artists and way ahead of everyone else in their art . prince felt the color purple symbolized the end of the world...to him, the song “purple rain” was about finding divine guidance during Arrmageddon. blood (i.e. red) in the sky (i.e. blue) = purple… purple rain pertains to the end of the world and being with the one you love and letting your faith/God guide you through the purple rain.” prince would say the apocalyptic connotations of the color purple made it his favorite color. the movie is more about apocalyptic relationships with the pinnacle being the one with his father... the end song "purple rain" is about rising above the damage and mending that emotional destruction whether it be your lover or other love ones in your life.
I think that the best version of this song is from his half time show during the Super Bowl. It was a terrible day weather wise and during this song the rain really started coming down as if on cue. Prince didn't miss a beat.
Make no mistake about it, Prince is one of the greatest artists of all time. If you want something uptempo from him, check out "Let's Go Crazy", "Little Red Corvette", "Kiss" for starters. I saw him 2 times and those are the best concerts I've ever seen live.
This probably wasn’t the song to start out with. It was taken directly from a movie scene and it’s a slower song so I’ll give u a pass on the almost disrespect of Prince. This title had me clutching my pearls. This song is something u listen to after u already understand who he is as an artist and u want to see him play.
Most young people who react to Prince for the first time usually starts with this video because they know it as Prince’s most famous song. Prince fans know better, but they don’t. They won’t even watch the movie to see where this video comes from..
there are other musicians in the world, and then there's Prince... He is on another level then any other musician. Purple Rain was written for the movie, so you have to watch the movie to understand the meaning of the song.
ummmm NO! Anything they do on prince should be his live performances. They would not appreciate that video. Seems like they are Eddie van halen fans, one of the most overated guitar players ever...One trick pony.
His catalog is HUGE! He was the epitome of an all around entertainer. He sang, wrote, danced/entertained. he also did a lot for musicians owning their own music instead of the music industry. PLEASE check out more. Some of my favorites: Sign of the times, When doves cry, Seven, kiss, I would die for you.
You guys were expecting high energy and dancing and trust me he delivers that on MANY of his songs, you just chose the wrong song with those expectations in mind.Try "Let's Go Crazy" and "I Would Die For You" live in concert Syracuse NY 1985 and the official video of "Little Red Corvette" !
This video was straight out of the movie and you mentioned early on. Seeing the movie purple rain, which is awesome, will make this song hit so much harder. Dont stop on prince. I think based on your comments you would love raspberry beret to do next.
princes super bowl half time show was epic bet half time show ever yall should really check it out not just purple rain but the whole show during purple rain in that show it started pouring rain prince kept rocking
Almost every other song Prince did was high energy - you just happened to start with his slowest song. Definitely keep going, you won’t be disappointed. I’d suggest Let’s Go Crazy from the Purple Rain soundtrack album.
This is an anthem for all die hard Prince fans! He was beyond amazing! I was lucky enough to see the opening night of the Purple Rain tour in Detroit in 84'! He is missed! RIP King!
Saw the little genius and his talented band on their opening night of their 21 shows at the London O2 venue in 2007. Surprisingly he opened the concert with Purple Rain Unbelievable performer and workaholic. I pity those of you who will never get to see him perform live R.I.P little man
I hope you revisit Prince maybe check out "Kiss" or "Little Red Corvette" to see more of his personality. You should also hear Purple Rain live (as this one was for the movie). Prince was very physical, animated, and even funny at times, in his live performances. He was a true Gemini. The Jazz Musician Miles Davis once said Prince was 4 people in one; James Brown, Charlie Chaplin, Jim Hendrix and Marvin Gaye.
Yes, it was a 'hit song'--and it won the Academy Award for best original song in a motion picture in 1985. There is a somewhat rare video on RUclips (ruclips.net/video/q_sHFZWeOUo/видео.html) of the live performance that this recording is made from when Prince debuted the song in Minneapolis in 1983. It is about twice as long as the released version, stripped down, and really shows how great this song actually is. Y'all must check out more Prince--his catalogue is top notch.
Most of the reactors think by not knowing anything about an artist is cool, but people like Prince you have to make an effort to look into more, it's a bigger story than one song. He's considered a musical genius.
To me this song is so legendary and epic because it is very different than most of Prince's previous hit songs. There are a few live versions of Purple Rain on youtube which are about 15 minutes long and Prince is absolutely wailing on the guitar. There's so many people that are familiar with Prince that don't realize he is one of the greatest guitar players of all time.
I could go on for days about the greatness of this musical genius. The man could do it all , rock , blues , pop , funk , jazz, classical you name it. There will never be another Prince.
This is from the movie. In the movie his father (a failed musician, alcoholic who is wallowing in depression) wrote the lyrics, it’s about Prince’s mother, and Wendy & Lisa wrote the music. Before this Prince’s character wouldn’t allow anything he didn’t write to be performed. Edit: Little Red Corvette
I saw Prince 3 times and it was the most unbelievable concerts I've ever seen. Love that man💜💜💜 the Bangles "Manic Monday". Yall need to watch :Little Red Corvette" for upbeat. This was the end of the movie so you have to see Purple Rain to understand the drama of this movie. Don't judge from this song, they are all different.
Prince has many different styles. He never gave into the music industry's idea that an artist should stick to one genre. You'll find Prince songs that fit into the rock, r&b, funk, hip hop, dance, pop, and gospel genres to name a few. I know you guys have reacted to live versions of songs you previously reacted to. I would like to recommend Prince's live version of Purple Rain from the 1985 AMAs. That was the first time many of us saw Prince live on TV, and he absolutely killed it. Here's the link: ruclips.net/video/VbEv8C9Cff0/видео.html. Some Prince songs that would be more in line with what you were expecting are Gett Off, 1999, Let's Work, and Kiss.
Prince could play 27 instruments I will never forget the first time I heard "I Wanna Be Your Lover" (1979). I was 8 years old & I hooked on his clothes, makeup, & THAT FALSETTO my God! Definitely check it out..... "Purple Rain" came out in 1984 age 13. That album flipped the script on the music industry. Most importantly is how the album affected Gen-X. In a world of Bruce Springsteen, Madonna, MJ, & groups iike Def Leppard & Metallica - there was the genius who set the standard for creativity, uniqueness, & musicianship. He truly is his own genre. RIP my purple 💜 one
Prince and The Revolution - Purple Rain (Live in Syracuse, March 30, 1985) watch this version. Then you understand Prince andhow the song was suppose to be( and not edtited by Producers)
I have seen many artists live at concerts over the years, lots of amazing songs. But this song has been my best experience. A surreal moment and nothing has had the feeling of goosebumps more for me than being present through this performed in person. So sad so many folks never will have that opportunity, but for the folks that did I am fairly confident he was the pinnacle. Rip Prince I was lucky to see you twice , a musical moment I feel will never be surpassed.
I never was a huge Prince guy myself. However a ton of respect for his musical talent and can shred that guitar. What made me a fan was watching him play this at the Super Bowl halftime show-in the pouring rain! And killed it…
Yeeesss !!!! Prince one of my favorite songs I like how billy the guy with the white glasses was looking at Prince and was " yeah....this going to change things forever"
Prince is awesome in every single way! Please do more reactions to his songs. And i wouldn't recommend this for every artist, but with Prince it is ALWAYS worth going for the long versions of his songs, especially for "When Doves Cry".
I got to see Prince tour for this album I was 14 and it was a restricted to 18 and up show. Prince was provocative on stage to say the least😂 He was Absolutely incredible and his moves OMG😂 My Dad bought the tickets by the way😂 We got in!!!
This song is actually a recording of a live performance they did in 1983 almost a year prior to the release of the movie and soundtrack. It was recorded at a benefit concert for the Minnesota Dance Theatre at the First Avenue nightclub. No, I was not there but wow, how amazing that would have been.
Actually several songs are from that performance. The first performance of those songs and remarkably the released version of those songs is largely that live performance ruclips.net/video/mn7NpvHp0NY/видео.html
Tastiest guitarist/ artist🎸 that ever lived. Tommy Bolin- Post Toastee ( 76) 🔥 RIP Minds will be blown Prince and many artsts site Bolin as an influence.
Filmed at 1st Avenue in Minneapolis. Prince would play there a lot in his early days. 1st Avenue was thee concert venue in Minneapolis back in the day. This clip is from the movie Purple Rain. The actual live clip from this recording is amazing. If you want to see prince and his guitar talent, watch The music hall of fame tribute to George Harrison. Prince plays part of While My Guitar Gently Weeps and leaves everyone speechless. One of the best guitar solos ever.
This is the final scene from the film from 40 years ago. Of course you couldn’t be more impressed. Yet, many people cried when seeing it back then at the theater.
😊❤ I agree with some comments, probably not the best song to start with. 😊 For more upbeat songs I love "1999", "Let's Go Crazy". My favorite song of his is "Raspberry Beret" not as fast as the other two I mentioned but it's the lyrics are fun and it's just a cool song!! I also love "When Doves Cry" is an awesome song. Probably one of his most famous songs but I would wait until you have heard a few other more fun songs. It's kinda slow like this one. Luv you guys!! 😊❤❤
PITCHFORKS AND TORCHES! WE RIDE AT MIDNIGHT!!! Naw, for us, we only knew the high energy Prince, so this was shocking and amazing (and still is). How he can take a ballad and still inject so much passion is remarkable to me. And, he's at the top of my list of guitarists - so much danged talent. However, please do not feel like you need to apologize for your reaction. That's part of the deal. We want you to like what we like, but really I want to know how you see and hear the music. Thank you both for your honesty (and now I'm singing that Billy Joel song). On a separate note, Phil, did you get sunburned? I hope that tans out nicely.
Two points others have mentioned: (1) While this is a classic Prince song, I agree it is probably not the first of his songs you should have reacted to to get a full appreciation of his genius; and (2) since this video is actually a scene straight out of the movie of the same name, you probably need to watch the whole movie to apreciate the visuals of what is going on onscreen and the actual lyrics in the context of how they fit into the story of the film. In the context of the film the dedication to his father makes a lot more sense.
Please do more Prince! His music changed my life completely… And I‘m also not totally in „Purple Rain“… Of course the guitar solo and the intensity in his voice but in my opinion Prince offers much more. So please listen this genius and react. I would love to see it. Greetings from Austria/ Europe
Been a fan/fam since the early 80s (when honestly, I was too young to be listening to Prince). Got to see him in concert 5 times, and each was incredible. One of the best artists to grace a stage. He loved to play off the audience, get them to sing, then look like "mmmm, that was awful!" and then try it again. So fun. When you really want to jump in, I'm sure there are lots of Prince songs to introduce you to. My favorite is a little-known song called "Good Love." So upbeat. Now you need to watch the movie Purple Rain, and both the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction of George Harrison (with Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, others) and the Superbowl Halftime Performance. Thanks for the reaction! My guess to your quiz is Manic Monday by The Bangles.
His song Kiss shows off his falsetto high range vocals. I loved that song. I grew up in the 80's. A hard rock guitar player but I always loved Prince. He's amazing.
This was the climactic scene of a movie, so it hits differently. It’s supposed to be a brand new song written by the girls in the band, and he’s essentially winging it up there , pouring his entire heart into it. Legendary
If you are not feeling Prince’s slower-paced jams, there are plenty of uptempo higher energy Prince songs than this. To see a more upbeat, energetic performance by Prince, I’d recommend “I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man”, “Let’s Go Crazy”, “America” live performance , “1999”, •Little Red Corvette”, live 1985 performances of “I Would Die 4 U” and “Baby I’m A Star”, “Batdance”, “Controversy”, “Why U Wanna Treat Me So Bad” , “Fury” He can slay on a ballad-both in writing and singing them. But if slow jams aren’t your thing react to at least the first two songs I mentioned.
This is from the movie. which is partly autobiographical. The dedication makes more sense in the movie. I think I felt the same as you about this song at the time, and I let it go. But there is a deeper meaning you are missing. No spoilers. Maybe Prince is an acquired taste. He is diverse. Thanks for being respectful and thoughtful. That's nice. There was a time when people got along. despite musical preference differences.
This song is in a pivotal part of the movie. I think if you saw the movie there'd be more context to the song. He normally is pretty high energy.
❤
Absolutely this. The song has a lot more emotional impact when viewed in the context of the entire movie.

Prince and The Revolution - Purple Rain (Live in Syracuse, March 30, 1985) watch this version. Then you understand Prince andhow the song was suppose to be( and not edtited by Producers)
The audio from the movie was from a live performance with only minor edits
Yea it’s from the movie. He definitely wrote it .
Prince is a musical genius!! And a brilliant guitar player!! I had posters of him all over my walls as a teenager 💜💜💜
This song is almost 40 years old. You guys should definitely listen to more of his music…
And it was the greatest Super Bowl halftime performance ever… mic drop
🤗 Prince Reactions are here! 🤩 Lets Go! 🥰🐰
To understand this song you should watch the whole movie
The Bangles,“Manic Monday and Sinead O’Connor, “Nothing Compares 2 U. There are more
This song is actually a recording of a live performance they did in 1983 almost a year prior to the release of the movie and soundtrack. It was recorded at a benefit concert for the Minnesota Dance Theatre at the First Avenue nightclub.
No, I was not there but wow, how amazing that would have been.
Actually several songs are from that performance. The first performance of those songs and remarkably the released version of those songs is largely that live performance

Prince was an absolute genius.. he wrote so many songs, for sooo many other artists. Played so many instruments.
40 year Old 80's Babies Classic!🎶🔥🔥🔥😎
If you REALLY want some epic Prince songs, When Doves Cry and Thieves In The Temple are what you want. Both are masterpieces.
I saw Prince 3 times over here in Scotland live, he was 1 of the most exciting live performers ever, he sings, dances, playes all instruments.
Tastiest guitarist/ artist🎸
that ever lived.
Tommy Bolin- Post Toastee ( 76) 🔥 RIP
Minds will be blown
Prince and many artsts site Bolin as an influence.
Bengals. He also wrote songs for many others.
This is the final scene from the film from 40 years ago. Of course you couldn’t be more impressed. Yet, many people cried when seeing it back then at the theater.
@stevepecorella2704 This isn’t the last scene or song in the movie. He sang I Would Die 4 U and Baby I’m a Star after that in the movie.
I think seeing the movie and the dynamic between him and his father would help u. It's a beautiful song and always makes me emotional.
you really need to watch the movie purple rain to appreciate how amazing this song is.
This dude is the picture they use in the dictionary next to meathead
Check out Let’s Go Crazy or Raspberry Beret.
Remember when you talk about him he could do anything pop r&b soul rock etc again a Genius
I think these are excellent recommendations.
Prince left a vault full,of music..
Completely Agree.
Prince was amazing. HE Shreds a Guitar..!!!
Please do more Prince! His music changed my life completely…
And I‘m also not totally in „Purple Rain“…
Of course the guitar solo and the intensity in his voice but in my opinion Prince offers much more.
Prince would never talk about the true meaning behind "Purple Rain".
The solo, in this song is the best part for me. So much emotion. That guitar sings just as good as prince does.
Prince wrote Manic Monday performed by the Bangles.
This was the climactic scene of a movie, so it hits differently. It’s supposed to be a brand new song written by the girls in the band, and he’s essentially winging it up there , pouring his entire heart into it. Legendary
Royalty, nobility, luxury, and ambition are all associated with the color purple.
Prince was every type of music! dance, disco, funk, rock, punk, jazz, he even did country! he did "strollin"! which might teeter on big band music!
If you see the movie Purple Rain, then that will put this song into context and meaning as it relates to the movie
Price has written songs ranging from ballads to dance, to hard rock, and everything in between.
