One of the best live performances I’ve ever seen. I can only imagine how incredible it must have been to be there. The atmosphere they created with Prince’s vocals and musicianship. Wish I could’ve been there
I was lucky enough to see Prince back in the 80's, I'll never forget that night. One of the greatest guitarists and showmen of all time, the world's not the same without him, I miss him
Great guitarist, great composer, great performer... a musical genius, able to evolve every time. Probably we don't know how many songs he composed also using many different names
I’m so glad you guys got to experience this live full song of Purple Rain!!! So much meaning. Purple rain definition = blood in the sky mixed with blue atmosphere End times? God speaking will always be with us in the dark times! ONE Major thing I would give you all the $$$$$$ for, but don’t have, is for you 2 to experience the Prince SUPERBOWL HALF TIME SHOW! Arguably one of the best Ever! Performed in the pouring rain!!! ❤✌️
Eric Clapton was once asked what’s it like being the best guitarist in the world, he says he didn’t know ask Prince. Absolutely phenomenal once in a generation talent.
I saw this concert in Memphis in 1985 , one of 7 times I was fortunate to see Prince live. I’ve said before , when Prince died I mourned the man and his legendary genius , but I also mourned the fact that I would never see Prince live I person again…
You guys have respect for The Paisley Prince aka Purple one and all us 80s babies who live for the outro guitar notes that are heartwrenching at the end, that if you notice the audience was oooohing the vocal notes for it, in the beginning. And so the beginning also had seeds of the ending here. Bravo guys! The only ones who found a true version.
This was my senior year in high school. I’m sure people my age say this all the time, but music today just can’t hold a candle to music from our time. My kids are 20 and 16 and don’t listen to any modern music; their favorite artists are Queen, Billy Joel, Nirvana, Green Day etc. The world is blessed to have live recordings like this.
Got to see Prince 5x, and he always finished with Purple Rain. People were crying on the way out of the venues. So powerful. While in seminary, I wrote a thesis about Prince's music and God/Jesus/Devil (in the early 1990s, so not as much music to go through). When I hear the lyrics, I imagine God is singing it. "I don't want to be your weekend lover" could be God saying, "you only worship me on weekends," and "I just want to be some kind of friend" as many Christians see Jesus as a friend, to make God a little easier for humans to wrap their heads around. "You say you want a leader, but can't seem to make up your mind...so let Me (God) guide you..." Listen to it again and imagine God singing the lyrics (NOT saying Prince was God, just his music has a lot of religious read-between-the-lines).
Good reaction! This is arguably his best live version of this song. This was right after he won an Oscar for the soundtrack of Purple Rain. fyi - he wore that dark, glittery cloak to the Oscars.
The movie version was preformed Live during taping! Prince neva did a song the same during live performances!!!! Yall need to check out his award show performances as well!! Prince never lip sing ALWAYS LIVE!!! MUSICAL GENIUS!!! He also played 27 instruments masterfully!!! RIP YOUR ROYAL BADNESS UNTIL WE SEE YOU AGAIN!!!💜💜💜💜💔
The only reason why Princes guitar skills aren’t as heralded is because a lot of his discography is music that Rock critics don’t appreciate “soul and Rnb” if he just stuck to rock he would be up there with the greats (he is in my eyes)
I was lucky enough to of saw Prince in '84 for the Purple Rain tour with Sheila E . Part of the encore was about a 20 min version of "Purple Rain". Amazing guitar player and performer!
Prince disciple since 1982. I was 20 years old and saw the "Purple Rain" tour in Philadelphia, the day after Thanksgiving 1984. I saw Prince four times more (all of them in Philadelphia) and the greatest of them was the October88 show. It was the "Sign O' The Times"/"Lovesexy" era, which is my uber-favorite. PRINCE ROGERS NELSON LIVES 😃
Go watch the performance he did at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, in 2021, in tribute to George Harrison. He and several others play While My Guitar Gently Weeps. George's son is on stage playing with them. That's really Prince at his best.
RIP Prince!! I miss him & his creativity y’all. When I first heard Prince in 1982, with 1999, then this one, I was converted from a Michael Jackson fan to a fan for life of Prince Rogers Nelson….his mix of R&B, Hard Rock, & pop made him a musical god to me 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽💔💔💔💔💔
Blessed to have seen The Purple Rain tour, You should have been there..Lol Look up the back story on this song Prince was quite the conspiracy theorist.
Please react to it's gonna be a beautiful night live the 8 minute version. Uploaded by Freed American youtube channel. Prince does an epic drum solo and its super super high energy
god blessed us with one very special man here gave us more then we can ever imagine with his voice and talent i still can't he gone it still hurts he was a major part my lifetime his music will live on here rest in peace until we meet again.
I saw this dude live twice back in in late 80's and how he is never mentioned when people talk about best guitarists or best solos? I'm a rock guy but Prince and this solo both are definitely in my top 10.
This is why you pay good money, to hear an artist, take a song you know by heart, and see it reworked, and stay true to the reason you loved it in the first place. ❤
I was 14 and this tour was coming and I had the Lp, movie and I begged my Dad for tickets. It was restricted to 18 years and older . I asked him for 2 weeks and he finally said yes but said don't be mad if you don't get in just sell the tickets. We got dressed up as best we could got in and the rest is history. And yes the concert was very Sexual 😂 RIP Prince thank you for the memories 🙏 I have been to over 60 shows and as far as theatrics go Prince and Pink Floyd were my favorite performances. He can really shred the guitar live and he did set the mood. Great reaction and Peace out guys ✌️ ☮️
The Artist (formerly known as Prince...) will forever be in a league all his own - and a National Treasure, whose voice went forever quiet way too soon...💜
The original “studio” version was actually recorded live, it was the first time it was ever played, he removed one verse as he felt it didn’t fit the song and added the orchestral ending in editing. You can actually hear the crowd ‘whoop’ at one point. The video of the full version is on RUclips. I’ve was never a fan of his music growing up, other than this song which is f’ing awesome and when he passed away I was surprised at how so many musicians were coming out and speaking about his musicianship so I did a bit of a deep dive into his music. I admit I’m still not a fan of his music, it’s just not my thing but having looked into his stuff, there is no doubting that he was a true musician, absolutely superb.
I actually got to see this concert 6 times in L.A. at 18; camped out overnight at the Forum for one and paid $100 for a "Purple Circle" seat for another (we actually got onstage for "Baby I'm a Star" that night - and I got retroactive stage fright ON THE WAY HOME lol). My fellow Prince addict's father worked at the Forum as a side gig so he got us tix the rest of the times, but we were willing to work (sleeping outside) and pay for that show when minimum wage was $3.35. EDIT: Granted, we were both still living at home (in a very nice neighborhood) and didn't have to pay rent, but still... 🤣. We spent OUR little money 😁; it wasn't like we were getting an allowance anymore lol. (I know. First world problems 😆). The funniest part was that we didn't think anybody would believe us about getting onstage (we weren't aware of anyone we knew also going to that show), but we both worked at a record/video store that had a Ticketmaster and, unbeknownst to us, some promotional tickets had gotten thrown on sale at the last minute - and two of our co-workers snagged them. (That was a pretty successful strategy for getting great seats to see almost everybody; just another perk of that being the greatest first job ever). They had good seats, but still brought binoculars (this was before huge video screens were a thing), and one of them lost his mind when he saw us onstage - apparently punching the other guy repeatedly while screaming, "Oh my God!" When we got back to work, they told us they saw us before we could even try to tell the story ourselves 😄.
There will NEVER be another Prince EVER again!!!!! He was a ONE of a kind and in universal history past and future!!!! the PASSION on this performance is INSANE, the ENERGY!!!
Amazing performance always get me, love both studio and this one! Eric Clapton was asked once, what is it like to be the best guitarist in the world..! He replied I don't know! Ask PRINCE..!
The loss of Prince and SRV was the greatest loss that will be felt forever. Both musical geniuses & left everything on their stage. To see Prince live, and the knowledge that he always gave the very best to his audience…This is why his body was broken.
I worked two nights of this show on this tour in 1985 in Austin. The first night before the show I was fortunate to meet SRV backstage as he was there to see the show.
Most people don't know that the opening lyrics of "never meant to cause trouble" was referring to the bitter relationship with his father, "weekend lover" was referring to a previous relationship he was in, "new leader" was referring to his band planning on going their separate ways.
Amazing to think that Wendy, the rhythm guitarist, was 20 years old at the time of this concert recording! A few months after this concert, he released Raspberry beret and its parent album "Around the world in a day"! He had moved on from Purple Rain!
I was always Prince fan, but I wasn't a huge fan. However, after his death, I cannot listen to this song without tearing up, and I'm not a cry-er. I've had way bigger musical influences die (Neil Peart, EVH, etc), but I don't have this problem with their music. Just Prince and this fucking song.
And you also have to remember that in 1985 with no internet , you would have to catch this on a Cable show , MTV was only 4 years old and that's where you would see something like this , IF you were watching at the time , I didn't even know he was a master at guitar until internet lol
You should check out his Manchester, UK version of Let's Go Crazy with 3rdeyegirl. It's a bit different from what most have heard of the song but real good.
Ya gotta do the Miami Suoerbown halftime show with Prince in actual Purple Rain. And hear the story behind it. It never rains in Miami in February. Except it did.
I saw this in the Orange Bowl in Miami when he brought it to Florida and you could hear a pin drop the crowd was so silent and amazes by what he did playing that solo ..
Prince was one of the greatest live performers to ever live. I still miss this musical genius
👍
an ex Gf dragged me to a prince concert back in the day,...... i can't stand that woman, but that night is still one of my fondest memories.
Gives me goosebumps every time and I was there. R.I.P. PRINCE 💜💜
This song is a masterpiece, but this performance….absolutely STUNNING
It is just beautiful
One of the best live performances I’ve ever seen. I can only imagine how incredible it must have been to be there. The atmosphere they created with Prince’s vocals and musicianship. Wish I could’ve been there
Well, they sure got their money’s worth ❤
I don’t think he ever did it the same way twice.
Thats a fact and to this very day this performance of Purple Rain is the best live version he’s ever done IMO!!! Watched this hundreds of times!!😊
You have to do "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man" one of his best.
I was lucky enough to see Prince back in the 80's, I'll never forget that night. One of the greatest guitarists and showmen of all time, the world's not the same without him, I miss him
The man was Awesome, Could play any instrument including his guitar.
Great song.
Great guitarist, great composer, great performer... a musical genius, able to evolve every time. Probably we don't know how many songs he composed also using many different names

Eric Clapton was once asked what’s it like being the best guitarist in the world, he says he didn’t know ask Prince.
Absolutely phenomenal once in a generation talent.
There was, is, nor will be anyone as good as Prince.
Prince's guitar ability was terribly underrated - he's great . . .
The best him and Eddie Van hallen
Was never underrated by his peers. Quite the opposite.
@@alanprzybylski1309 So true . . .
Pure genius. Never be another quite like him.

Spectacular.
He was the best artist of our time, most talented.
You should review Princes live Superbowl halftime show . It is awesome and yes it was pouring rain the entire show
My husband was a bodyguard for Prince. He said Prince was one of the nicest person you could ever know.

What an awesome song!!❤❤❤ Prince is an amazing performer, with definite personality!!❤❤
This is my favorite version of Purple Rain. I get goosebumps every time I listen to it. There are many great versions though. 💜
That was fantastic, utterly amazing & beautiful, 100% performed with passion and heart ❤️
Like it’s been said in the comments, the Purple Rain performance from the Super Bowl is a must, it’s the BEST! 💜 RIP 💜
Super Bowl halftime, IN THE RAIN, how appropriate and Prince wanted the promoters to make it rain harder!
I was lucky enough to see him on the purple rain tour and it was one of the best shows I've ever seen! 💜💜
Me too, Michelle. I was a college student at Michigan State. My buddies and I road tripped to Detroit for this concert.

Best Guitarist I've heard since Hendrix. Awesome feel and technique. Miss him.
Entertainer par excellence.
Good reaction! This is arguably his best live version of this song. This was right after he won an Oscar for the soundtrack of Purple Rain. fyi - he wore that dark, glittery cloak to the Oscars.
The guitar solo was fire! Right up there with how he killed it at the GEORGE HARRISON🔥 tribute! RIP PRINCE.🔥🙏 Thanks for everything.❤️✌️
My favorite Purple Rain performance was at the Super Bowl in the rain
The single greatest performance at the Super Bowl EVER PERIOD. I wish they would have chosen it.
Same I was hoping that was the video they had selected.
I agree also! It definitely shows his showmanship! Greatest Performance ever!@Andre_Ons_Marshall

it was remastered in 2021 but was played in 2004
Prince is the GOAT live, bar none 💜 great reaction. Will you react to Prince at the 2007 Alma Awards performance please 💟
Saw the Purple Rain tour live. It is everything you would think it is. Best concert I have ever been to and I saw a lot of bands in the 70's -90's.
To me this is his best live version of Purple Rain. The solos are mindblowing.
thank you...thank you....thank you. How it was meant to be listened to
Jimmy Page, Mark Knopfler, Steve Howe they could all improvise but their musical minds, their light and shade and subtlety were sublime.....
God damn that man could do no wrong.
Commenting at 7:45 mark…. Wait for it…. Wait for it…… wait for it….. and Prince plays the white cloud guitar!!!!!! 💜💜💜🕊️🕊️ Miss U Prince
Like a cosmic occurrence,
...you get this level of artistry once every hundred years or so.

The performance really brings out the gospel aspects of the song. The church of James Brown.
Agreed!!! That performance was spiritual as he took them to church that night lol and he had that guitar crying!!!!

The first solo was Wendy Melvoin. She was part of his band and half of Wendy and Lisa. Lisa Coleman was hs keyboardist.
Prince was off the chart with charisma and talent live. He was from another planet.

i cried when he died too, and still do to at times. such a man with such a message for all.
It happens to me too, also hearing heroes by David Bowie
When he goes to his favourite guitar he really lets rip !!!!!! Unbelievable performance

My wife and I got to see them on this tour when they came to the Omni in Atlanta.A night we will never forget and it was only $17.50 each!

The Purple Rain you heard from the movie which is also the same on the album was actually performed live in a 1983 concert he gave at First Avenue.
Strong Jimi Hendrix vibe to me 😮
You have to also remember this song was released 1 year before this performance , and the fans are singing it before he does.

Prince is always better live. Not too many people you can say that about
Prince was a guitarists guitarist.
If Prince had decided just to be a guitar player and focused only on the guitar, he would be considered the greatest guitarist of all-time.
