This video is a reaction video the now famous guitar solo Prince did while playing with an all star ensemble "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" at the 2004 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony.
Prince was a very talented musician, and a very unique person, and the solo is a great piece of work. What many guitar players can learn from this is the performance and showman aspect of it.
When you look at some of the most famous guitar players in the world, Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, etc, they are amazing showmen on stage when they perform.
Many guitar players need to work on bringing themselves out of their shell, you can be the most amazing guitar player in the world, but if you are boring to watch, it really will not matter!

Prince was not a Prince everyone knows this. He was a King , a goat of everything, singer, dancer, song writer , composer, almost every instrument he played, his best is guitar, piano, drums and many more. No One was ever this talented at least in our generation........Amen to best in Heaven & Earth..,

I remember reading an interview with Prince's buddy who taught him how to play the guitar. He said Prince blew him away because he could just "do it". He said he would show Prince something and he would have it down effortlessly. Prince would say, "Okay, what next?" "What next is you're supposed to practice that for a week or two and struggle with it, not just be able to do it and move on!"
Lol he sure is a prodigy… on multiple instruments!

There's a story that Clapton was once asked how it felt to be the best guitar player in the world, and he answered, "I dunno, go ask Prince."
When Prince went to the rehearsal for this performance the guy that played the first solo also took the last one. The producer was worried about it because Prince didn’t rehearse the solo with everyone. Prince or his people told the producer not to worry about it. He was that confident. Prince also wasn’t that familiar with the song beforehand.

I LOVE IT that you honed in on the performance / theatrical aspect of this. EVERYONE knows he absolutely murdered this piece technically, and some people do not understand or seem offended by this type of performer. But it is nice that you spoke about THAT part of this!

Pr4ince is channeling a legend, like Caros Santana does. They are literally opening up to higher dimensions and allowing the muses to come through; can't be taught, truly mystical mind-blowing stuff! He tore it up from the floor up and sashayed away!
The Harrisons should actually be thankful. So much was made of Prince's solo that later the Harrison estate became critical of Prince for stealing the spotlight from George's moment. Even Dhani, who seemed so enthused during the concert, later came out in an interview that I read and he was also critical of Prince's playing in his dad's song. However if Prince hadn't been there doing that show stopper of a performance, we wouldn't be talking about George Harrison's song or his induction in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Younger people who don't even know the Beatles now know this George Harrison song. Prince gave probably eternal longevity to a song that would have been forgotten by many. I am a Beatles fan and I am a prince, btw.
Totally agree. Sad the jealousy from Dhani and the Harrison Estate. Love the Beatles too, but this cross of them both and Prince (if one can) further immortalising a song is what legends are made of.

Nice reaction 😃 Also keep in mind that he was also inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of fame as the first recipient of the evening. Also he was telling Rolling Stone magazine who didn’t put him in their top 100 at that point to eat it 😉💜
I think a lot of people really didn’t know he could play at that level… I saw an interview with Billy Gibbons from ZZ TOP say that he knew Prince was a great entertainer and dance but had no idea he could play guitar like that until this presentation…
@@YesYouCANPlayGuitar I was blessed to see him 4 times live 🔥🔥. To me Prince was the greatest all around musician/ entertainer that I’ve seen in my life “the complete package” pianist, bass, drums, singing and dancing, and of course guitar playing. He wrote, produced, arranged, and composed his own music. The first 2 albums he played all the instruments and only used band members for touring 💜😉
There is a version of “Purple Rain “ live in 1985 that is 16:00 long, Prince has several solos that are fantastic 💜
The guitar he is playing "looks" like a Telecaster, but it's actually a Hohner Madcat (Similar style of a Tele, but had pickups and a bridge more similar to a Strat). Nice review, thanks.
The Telecaster is not a brand, it’s a guitar body style so that Hohner MadCat IS a telecaster.
That Hohner telecaster is iconic, it’s the guitar which inspired me to learn to play guitar.
I have a Harley Benton telecaster which looks like a black version of the MadCat (all black with brown paisley pickguard); it’s my cheapest guitar and my favorite. All I did was change the stock humbuckers and it’s more fun to play than my PRS and Gibson SG.

Fantastic review, thank you!! Prince was all about the feels!! He could do it all. He was such a joy to watch. Sometimes I think Prince's skill was that he made it all looks so effortless that he didn't really look like he was trying at all. And the obviously he was accused of showboating. But I don't know anyone who ever watched Prince live that didn't get the "magic". He just had it. To watch him perform and you would be under his spell. He was everything and more to music. He entertained the crowd and for those few minutes or hours that you were watching him you were transfixed, happy and uplifted. Rest in peace P 💜💜💜

It's interesting to note that Prince was shy and introverted early in his career, but he worked hard at his craft and had a clear vision. It was a dragon he slayed.

I've seen a few comments on other posts of this performance that Dhani Harrison didn't like how Prince showed off during the song. It bummed me out reading that bc he looked truly pleased with what he was seeing. Im so glad you said "don't hold back." Prince NEVER held back on stage. It was his place to shine and he did it with ease. I guess I can maybe see, coming from the son of the man they are paying tribute to, that he thought maybe Prince was being disrespectful but Prince will always be Prince on stage and if you didn't know that beforehand, you learned real quick! The best performance artist of all time in my eyes 💜 RIP The Purple One.
The whole thing is that it is a performance, it's the total package. Prince got that very young which contributed to his quick rise and success. There are some music "purists" out there who will never get it. Yes in an ensemble there are some courtesies you take playing lead guitar, but Prince did nothing wrong, he kicked ass!
I read that it was not Dhani but his mother that was not a fan of Prince that night and she had to talked into letting Prince play in the tribute to her husband. She felt he was a show off performer.
@@rodpeter6542isn’t that what you’re supposed to do when performing and putting on a “show”? Show off is definitely what he did, and rightfully so seeing that he was inducted into the Hall of Fame that night after being snubbed from the greatest guitarist Rock & Roll Hall of Fame list.
Prince was notorious/infamous throughout the '80s for his ever-present & over-bearing bodyguards, who would sometimes carry him bridal-style or piggyback, so that was kind of a nod back to those day LoL
They didn't want him in their club so he took a moment to crash the party and show them he's above them...

You see I believe that Prince never really showed us him playing guitar all out, you see he always wanted to keep it professional & in line with the chords that he was playing. To me as I have studied him throughout his career, he really only gave us just enough to keep us wanting more & I believe that he had a thing about not showing his whole repertoire in fear of being copied or someone trying to use his style that he felt like he created. Selfish Genius is the best way that I could describe it, but hey that's Prince, sorely missed R.I.P.❤ 🙏🏾👼🏾
His guitar playing was always tasteful where the esthetic of the song always took priority. I was never once bored by Prince's guitar playing and that says something for his craft. If you go back to the late 70's - early 80's, Prince developed what was called the Minneapolis sound and everybody jumped on the bandwagon and stole that sound. So maybe you are onto something.

You clearly haven’t watched purple rain or any of his early music videos. His song why you wanna treat me so bad proves that he was a guitarist he was always so good at guitar.
@@cocopops4974 1st I'd like to thank you for your comment & I said that he was probably the best that ever did it, I don't think that you read my opinion thoroughly because no one can deny Prince's prowless on guitar, what I was trying to convey was that he's probably never showed us his whole repertoire that's all, now Price never needed anymore to champion his cause as far as his art, dead or alive so please try & comprehend what you are reading.
He and his instrument are one. You know he doesn’t need practice before playing because his playing onstage is spontaneous and what he feels. I have been listening to his sessions at Sunset Sound and the engineers talking about him. Peggy, David Z and others at times. They were merely witnesses as opposed to contributing to his sessions. Worth listening to if you have time.

Your comment on stage craft/performance is valid but it needs to suit the band and music in order to be believable. If you look at Prince here, his performance wouldn't normally work in a band situation like this one. It only works because it's a special one off event performed by legends for a legend and quite honestly, Prince's performance is the reason it's so memorable - he instinctively knew there was no point for him to perform if he wasn't going to try and elevate it to epic proportions.
George, Prince and Petty are all gone now but this performance lives on for all time.
Well said, I agree with the statement made about a lot of guitar players who show lots of technical skill but the playing doesn't actually grab you.... I'm always blown away by Princes ability to show off but also humbly be a minimalist at the same time...
This was a performance after rolling stone magazine didn't have Prince in the top 100 guitar players of all time. So Tom Petty gave Prince the platform to do his thing. Watch it again and you will see Prince keep looking over to Petty to keep going.
Wow really… now that is interesting to learn. Rolling stone obviously made a major mistake with that printing. I’m glad Prince had a chance to show that he had the skills, but for whatever reason it went unnoticed until that day.

@@missy652 You never lie BUT Tom and Jeff Lynn asked Prince to come perform after the Rolling Stone's article came out. Also, in rehearsals Tom told Prince not to rock out save it for the show.
2 rumors about that performance...is he didnt rehearsed with them and the reason he showed out was Rolling Stone mag did a top 100 guitarist and he wasnt listed so he sorta did a f you to them

I saw him one time ...maybe a year or so before he passed...a reporter asked him about playing the guitar...he answered the reporter by saying to him...that he could no longer play the guitar...I heard that and thought WOW...how can you lose your ability to play something that you have played your whole life ?..it was unreal..

OMG, this was one of the first reactions I did some time ago.... my old videos are so hard to watch now.... well even the new ones are hard to watch but you know what I mean :)
There is actually a second video of this performance that was released I believe last year, labeled the director's cut which showcases Prince's solo in more depth. The director decided after all these years to edit the video where the camera focuses on Prince. You should watch it, it is a way better version when you are focusing on Prince's talent.

From the perspective of bending a piece of wood, strings and electronics to his will he's high on the list...In terms of burning the house down he's maybe the best in recent times.
I absolutely agree Nick! I've since checked out some of his other performances people have told me about. There is an interesting interview with Billy Gibbons and he talks about when he met Prince after that guitar solo. He knew Prince "played" guitar but thought of him more as a singer/dancer/entertainer, I thought the same before as well.
It would have been great if Tom Petty had asked Prince to become a defacto member of the Traveling Wilbury's, and had done something together.

It sure woke many people up to how great of a guitar player he is!
He was actually inducted that same night in 2004 as well. It wasn’t after the fact.

Prince said that he did not have time to learn the solo note for note but he copped a feel for it and went all in.

Marc Mann, part of Jeff Lynne's band. In the proper audio mix of this performance (only available at the RnR HOF Museum in Cleveland sadly) you hear him playing against Prince in that final 30 seconds where Prince seems to slow down and run out of steam... He's actually playing into Mann's soaring guitar.

People are weird... Agreed! hahaha! Personally, I just want to see some passion behind whatever instrument is being played. That's it. But then again, people display passion in different ways. I know I do. I always look angry for some reason lol. Anyway, enjoying the music comes in at #1. ( where the hell did that guitar go in the vid. by the way)

Sheesh, a lot of hype out there about Prince's solo; it was definitely amazing, but not better than dozens of solos by Van Halen, Schon, Paige, Rhoads, Luthaker, Knopfler and others already captured on film.
I call them quick fingers , Steve Vai and others like him . Al great , now the real great ones have their own sound . Jimi , Erick , M Knopler , D Gilmour , P T , Santana .all you need is 3 notes and you know . Now Prince is a case apart , he wanted to be remembered by his music , he was a bit weird .

@@YesYouCANPlayGuitar yea. I would never toss my Les Paul , but Fenders with the bolt on necks make them more repairable I guess . Or probably more likely is how I feel when playing one . The sound from guitar and springs and light craftsmanship and just plain sexiness drives me mad sometimes. I just can’t control myself . Great video by the way . Harrison wrote a gem , and Prince did the song Justice .
@@YesYouCANPlayGuitar case in point : I saw Yngwie a year ago on security at corner of stage left . Malmsteen threw every banana scalloped masterpiece to roadie after every song . Must have been 20 times and 20 feet minimum.
I’m aware of the calibre of artists on stage but Prince makes every one of em sound like amateurs.
