Prince’s solo was NOT in the original-it was improvisation done by him, and the rest of the band heard it for the first time when he played it in this performance. Prince was a true genius; like his music or not, from composing to writing songs to being able to pick up pretty much any instrument and playing it, he was a God among his peers. Gone too soon and not properly appreciated until he was gone IMO, RIP Prince!

Solos like this were common in his live shows....but, for whatever reason, despite the UNPRECEDENTED amount of music he put out, he didn't really show it on his albums, (save for a very few glimpses on a very few cuts). I only got to see him live a few times, but I'm SO GLAD I at least have those , because let me tell you.....this man's live show is LIFE-CHANGING, MESMERIZING, MIND-BLOWING & UTTERLY UNRIVALED....(& I've seen SEVERAL of the "greats" live). Prince's version of "Creep" by radiohead(video is ok-the guitar is on fire!) Prince covering "play that funky music" live (again killer solo-if you watch the whole video-he picks up the bass and kills that too.). Both are on youtube. What makes Prince's guitar solos great is that most of the time he treats the guitar playing as if it were a vocal in the song (always adds emotion to the playing of the guitar).

Prince was that good on all the instruments he played (technically 27 but mainly keys, guitar, bass, drums/percussion). He made me realize it’s one thing to be a mult-instrumentalist, but it’s another thing to be proficient on everything. I’d put Stevie Wonder in that category too.
America from 1985 is one of my favorite live performances of his. And even though it’s his most popular song, the live version of Purple Rain in Syracuse 1985 is worth watching. It makes the album version look like a child wrote it, live was that much better IMO. Something In The Water from 2014 is cool too. He’s regarded as one of the best live performers of all time. There’s too many phenomenal live performances to mention

I think they revised the #. For one thing, you can actually see him playing harmonica in the "Thieves In The Temple" video, which means at LEAST 28. For another thing, I think he played 27 instruments on his first album alone and then learned even more. In addition to all that, he was a great dancer, singer, performer, and bandleader too (a forgotten art).

As far as more Prince, you can literally just randomly pick a song, live or not, and it's good or it's great. I think there are in his whole library, only one or two songs that I don't particularly care for, but they aren't bad. They would be other artists' best songs, by far, for sure. He wasn't just an amazing singer and musician, he was also a great producer and innovator. I had a friend who went to a concert of his and said that Prince had played the trombone. And then Prince said afterwards that he had just started playing it last weekend. My friend, who was very musically talented himself, said that was so hard to believe, because he played it like he'd been playing it for years! What a talent, and what a loss. Shinning so brightly among so many musical legends is very hard to do, yet Prince shone like a searchlight, wow and wow. And such a showman, leaning back and getting caught and propped back up, and then killing that guitar solo, yeeting the guitar into the air and leaving like "bye bitches", too much, I can hardly handle it, and I've seen this a few times. And why not yeet the guitar to heaven since he killed it? Watching this, it is more than a bit sad to know that Tom Petty and Prince are both gone now. And Dani Harrison, looks like a slightly more Mexican George Harrison, man, does he look like his dad, and you can tell how geeked he was to be on stage with all these legends, couldn't stop grinning from ear to ear. Another must-see performance, and it's related to this one, related by a Beatle, there's a live performance with Toto and Ringo Starr, them doing "Rosanna", "Africa" and "Hold the Line", and it is so good that I'm watching that again after this. Here's the link: ruclips.net/video/3FRcR7tzib8/видео.html

He was inducted in2 the R&R Hall of fame the FIRST year he was able 2 be and that same year George Harrison of the beatles was also and this song he wrote 4 the beatles. Then #Prince added what was the GREATEST live performances on that stage of greats. ELOs Jeff Lynne was singing with Petty and Winwood played the first guitar solo. I learned that day that there is Prince on the radio and there is Prince live and that is a whole different experience!!!! He played some guitar rifts that left wet seats!
I also didn't know many rock fans were fans of his because of his guitar playing. His guitar prowess doesn't always come through on records.
There are so many Prince songs to recommend but you might like "Let's Go Crazy" or "When Doves Cry" or "Kiss" ...really I can go on and on! You might like his live Super Bowl Performance of 2007 I think...

The look on your face when Prince starts to slay that guitar says it all. This is from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame TV broadcast in 2004. This was a tribute to George Harrison of the Beatles, who sang lead on this song back in day. George had recently passed away from brain cancer. His look-alike son, Dhani, played guitar standing next to Tom Petty. He was having a blast. The other lead singer was Jeff Lynne, ELO's front-man lead singer. Prince was a late addition to the lineup and did not show up for rehearsal, so nobody knew exactly what he was going to do. Prince played 9 instruments and was a virtuoso on the electric guitar.

Look into Steve Winwood. You'll be surprised at his longevity and talents as a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist. I know you've heard Gimme Some Lovin by Spencer Davis Group. That's Winwood singing and playing when he was a teenager! He also was in Traffic, Blind Faith and had some top selling solo albums in the '80s.

I think it’s one of the things that put Prince out there. Even though I was baby fed with his music, I discovered his guitar skills in my 20s…
Nobody seems to know how multi/instru he is.

that's Tom Petty an Jeff Lynn singing also. Jeff was the lead singer for ELO (Electric Light Orchestra) back in the 70's and 80's, he could really sing well. Prince could also play like 20 instruments, he was just really gifted and could rip on guitar when he wanted to, ha

Beatles are the top selling musicians of all time. 20 number 1 songs in 7 years, and this was written by their 3rd best songwriter. If you don't the Beatles, you don't know rock.

Bushy hair is Jeff Lynne from ELO -- lead electric guitar for the first half of the song is Steve Winwood (too long a resume to list) -- and yes, Prince is one of the best guitarists to have ever done it, Rolling Stones and others have come around in recent years... not only that, but he played about 20 different instruments and actually played every instrument in the studio recording of his first few albums.

You should check out Prince's live cover of Jimi's song Red House from the Rave Un2 the Year 2000 concert. I feel like Prince is so nonchalant about his guitar playing that it gets seriously overlooked in his own music...especially because he plays everything, so the end result is extremely balanced. But his guitar playing seems to shine when he covers other people's music, I think because folks are so used to the original that they can actually recognize Prince's style.

You prob know this already but the solo was a Prince thing. He did throw in a nod to Claptons version with a “Clapton bend” in the first third of the solo. Yeah, this for me, is one of my favourite guitar solos live. Check out his other live stuff, not just the purple rain era. Try play that funky music and motherless child if you want to be blown away and surprised.

Apparently Rolling Stone has just come out with the top 100 guitarists of all time and did not include him (but did include some on stage). So this was a nice little “take that” (pc version) for him… awesomeness personified. The man was a true artist!!!!

Prince was an idiot savant/prodigy (or genius) on all musical instruments since childhood. On his first album, the other band members could play what he wanted, but they didn't quite do it exactly to his liking. So, Prince played each instrument exactly how he wanted them to play em on every song on the entire album. He was a perfectionist too, right, lol! Oh, he was a Minnesota State Champion Point Guard Basketball Player, too!

Prince was an underrated beast on guitar. He mastered over 20 instruments not just played them. He was not happy with Rolling Stone at this time who did not rank him as a top guitarist. All of these legends are awesome but Prince's charisma and ability just stands out. Great reaction. I will subscribe.
