There's a story Stevie Nicks tells about Prince.. Stevie was on her honeymoon, and she was on her way up to the resort, driving in a car... When Little Red Corvette came on the radio. .. Stevie made her husband pull over and buy the tape after searching all over this mountain town for it lol... Prince had recorded a under lying guitar track mixed in a very unique way, and it haunted her... She tried and tried to get ahold of prince the following weeks, because she wanted to record a new song Stand Back using the mixing technique..I guess they had started recording that song and Prince snuck in and played synth...helped her record that special underlying track.. He got up to leave and Stevie was like "wait a minute.. we have to sign some contracts and decide on a fee.. he told her not to include his name on the song at all, and that he was honored to with with her, and snuck out the back door...i love that story. Great reaction.

I believe the gentleman who played the first guitar solo on this iconic song was Marc Mann, who is an American keyboardist, guitarist, programmer, arranger and conductor. He P. didn't do that in the rehearsal. So Marc didn't even know P. was going to do all that. None of them did. Tom and PRINCE gave each other that look that this is great!

@@vickielliott4317There's a story that during a rehearsal Mann kept stepping on Prince's solo. So much so that the director or producer had to ask Mann to stop doing that. Prince was cool about it.

Without any doubts, a hard working genius with a hyper creative mind that could do anything and do it right in any music style, the most complete artist of all time.

When Prince first hit the scene he had a song on his debut album called "I'm Yours." When I heard that for the first time I was thinking, okay, now this guy can play guitar! My impression only got more cemented as time went on, so when I first saw *this* I wasn't surprised one tiny bit. However, everyone on that stage is awesome. I think why Prince stands out so much, aside from a blistering solo, is that it's Prince, doing a classic rock cover. He seems so out of place, yet perfectly in place at the same time as if he'd been a lead guitarist in a rock band his whole life.

Yup. This IS the best Beatles cover performance, and given the great artists who have covered Beatles' classics, that says so very much. But the force of spirit, the genius among icons here who takes this to the next level is PRINCE. This is the moment where Prince ascends from "mere" superstar, prodigy musician to those honoured few of the Panthéon of all-time greats: Janis, Aretha, Marley...George, Jimi, Chuck...
Prince's Holy Fire summons the spirits of BOTH George AND Jimi: they were THERE, you feel it, you know it, you're transformed by it. And of course it would be Prince: yes, he is Jimi's younger brother and George's spiritual fellow-traveler.
But Prince is also the one who best embodied, took forth, and really GOT the Beatles' wild, jaw-dropping eclecticism, their fearless boundary-crossing, their androgynous challenge to gender, class, all of it, all of it, HE is the one who really GOT what the Beatles were truly doing and took it forth and made it his own. And now we've lost him, too.
George, Jimi, Prince are lost to us but are now found forever "of the ages": While My Guitar Gently Weeps, indeed.

Prince was at the rehearsal, contrary to one of the comments here that he "showed up at the last minute". He was supposed to play lead throughout the song, but Marc Mann decided to play lead without consulting anyone else. Prince didn't say anything or make a scene, & just played rhythm. The producers were afraid that Prince would bail, but Prince said it was OK & he'd be fine with only playing the final solo. I'd say it worked out pretty well...
Eric Clapton's "best guitarist go ask Prince" comment is supposedly a myth. However, Clapton credits Prince for saving his life & renewing his love for music. Clapton was in the midst of a drug & alcohol fueled depression when Purple Rain hit the theaters. He was blown away by Prince & the movie & snapped out of his depression with a new sense of purpose. I've always thought that it would've nice if EC could've been part of this show too. The irony of "teetotaler" & anti-drug Prince being taken out by prescription drugs is compounded by how his work influenced Clapton to refocus & clean up.

I absolutely love this performance. I remember when the original song came out, Dhani Harrison is the spitting image of his dad. Thank you for sharing Harri ❤

Harri, I do believe you lost your cool, but in such a cool way! Great reaction, mate, as your emotion enhanced this great performance yet another level higher. As for you, Brandon, you've done it again. Awesome request!

For the ones who really understand the emotional feeling behind it (I had big one on sports event)
😅This is the greatest ever solo i never seen!!! Prince couldn't express his feelings openly at the end that's why He disappear from the crowd...Prince gave his soul and heart on this!

I didn’t get notification of this song, I came across it randomly. So many great comments. This brilliant performance never fails to bring a smile to my face but also sadness to those we’ve lost. Bittersweet. But we’ll always have their music 🎶…what a gift! Thanks Harri, so glad you enjoyed this. 🙏🇨🇦

Don't get me wrong; I'm sure Marc Mann feels honored to be part of such a memorable moment in music.
I just wonder how he felt, navigating an iconic and difficult guitar line (allegedly, Eric Clapton did it on the original recording because George didn't think he could do his own composition justice), and yet by the end…nobody's thinking about Marc Mann's performance. Prince just takes it to another galaxy. Insane.

**THIS** is why You Tube is so phenomenal. Anyone can be made aware of the best music and best performances of any genre and any age, at any time... I'd not heard much Prince's music when I discovered this outstanding performance by ALL the musicians involved, a few years ago. My lead-in was Tom Petty and the Travelling Wilburys, but discovered the video years after it was recorded. Now here you are discovering it, and I'm loving seeing your delight! And now your channel has brought it to the attention of thousands of other music fans ..... and so it goes .... Thank you Harri! [And, yes, I did explore more of Prince's work after this mind blowing encounter .....]

I assure you that particular guitar was not harmed. That was his literal baby, his Hohner Madcat. The same stage hand to held him up probably had to practice catching it.

Camera man kinda blew it I agree but wow what an assembly of greatness doing such an iconic song and when I first saw this I was totally blown away by the Prince solo as well. It was a top level solo no doubt. Music is so powerful - we need to tap in on another level and achieve more as humans ASAP

The reaction on the faces of tom and Harrisons son and the other guys was genuine, cause during rehearsals they didn't have time to work on princes solo. Then combine this with the fact rolling stones magazine left him off the top 100 guitarist list. He was a little pissed so what we got to see was prince giving them the middle finger only the way prince could! Then the guitar toss and walk off like a boss just epic! I feel like we all need to thank rolling stones magazine for this epic solo!!!
