Today on the channel, I am checking out "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" being performed at the 2004 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony to pay tribute to George Harrison! This performance was absolutely mind-blowing and everyone on stage brought it! Prince however, went absolutely insane with his guitar playing and his extended solo brought the house down! This is one of my favorite performances we've had on the channel and I cannot say enough about the talent on that stage! When Prince starts playing lead, you couldn't wipe the smile off of Danny Harrison's face with a sandblaster. We got robbed when he died. Such an unreal talent.
On a stage full of legends, Prince shown like no other. Dani looks just like his dad it is eerie. We've lost so many on that stage now. Jeff Lynn seems to not age though....

Prince always put 1000% into his performances! I think he plays 20 some instruments, including DRUMS. His creativity was endless and he truly lived to perform.

Prince was a musical genius. Loved him!
Prince's part was supposed to end but when you saw him give Tim Petty that smile, it was because Tom told hi to go for it! Prince had briefly attended rehearsal but didn't rehearse the ending. When the told him he needed to rehearse this, he told them, "I got this!"

This was when George Harrison was inducted into the 2004 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Great tribute to George & this is one of his best songs that he wrote. Dhani Harrison (George's son) was playing guitar with all the other mega stars that night. Sadly we have lost Tom Petty & Prince now.

* Tom Petty - 3 Grammys and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; (playing twelve string acoustic)and from his band the Heartbreakers’ Scott Thurston (playing bass) and drummer Steve Ferrone.
* Jeff Lynne - 1 Grammy and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (playing electric guitar with hat, beard and curly hair) and from his band ELO (Electric Light Orchestra) and Marc Mann (plays first solo) guitarist for ELO.
* Stevie Winwood - 2 Grammys and member of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (playing organ) was part of The Spencer Davis Group, Blind Faith, Traffic and solo career and Jim Capaldi (from Traffic with Winwood) on percussion (tambourine).
* Billy Preston - 2 Grammys and in Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; (on piano) played keyboards for the Beatles and had a solo career.

Note that the Grammy mentions are wins, it doesn’t count the numerous nominations they received. Also Petty and Lynne were part of the Traveling Wilbury’s along with George Harrison, Roy Orbison and Bob Dylan. Harrison, Petty, Lynne, Winwood and Preston are also song writers and producers.
Prince was inducted that night also💜. What a great reaction. All I could do was smile😊

The reason the 2 official videos of this performance have a combined 164 million views is because of Prince's solo. It's become legendary & without Prince the video would've gotten a respectable few million, because the other legends on it are being legendary & amazing, but Prince lifted it up. There's a NYT article about the behind the scenes with stories from those who were there. It was written after Prince passed. Tom Petty said he could feel something special was happening very quickly, so he kept letting Prince continue. Prince didn't all out rehearse, he just said he'd be ready for showtime, so none of them knew what he was going to do. It blew all the legends' minds, too.
This was the night that Prince got possessed by the ghost of Jimi Hendrix!!!
I told you, man! I was among the people who recommended this performance. This is why Prince was called "His Royal Badness"! The guy was an entire package - He could write great songs, he looked great, had great moves but he could TEAR UP instruments! Multiple instruments! Also, not all "All-Star" performances are created equal. In fact, there have been some pretty awful ones, particularly some of the RR HofF show-closers but THIS.....This is as perfect as it gets!! Everyone on stage is firing on all cylinders!

Steve Winwood was in 60's group The Spencer Davis Group at 16 years old, with the hit "Gimme Some Lovin". Steve on lead vocals. You might want to start with that one. He also had solo hits too, "Higher Love" & "Roll With It", to name but 2. 👌🎶🎼
Prince was also being inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame that night, so he had a whole other performance for his induction. He had a GOOD night that night!

There are so many story's behind this event. You should look it up.
From Prince not showing up at rehearsal and other legends saying don`t worry he will do fine. Prince wanting to show of do to being left of a Rolling Stone top 100 guitarists.
Some think this solo is his way of showing his abilities after he was left off the Rolling Stone list of best guitar players.
Prince had walked away from "Guitar God" curse but still had his pride. He was building other bands etc.. Took time off and this was his come back.
I know Prince was a good musician, but his guitar on this just blew my mind.
Prince comes in and with the first note bend you can hear that something different is about to happen.
It’s crazy that it seems like it took taking Prince out of his music for people to finally see what a skilled guitar player he was. From early songs like Bambi to later grooves like Plectrumelectrum, he constantly showed his skills and somehow people slept on it.
There’s a great story about this. According to an interview with Top Petty Prince showed up and didn’t even rehearse, he simply asked what part of the song did they wanted him come in on. Then he replied “ok, I’ll see you at the show”. Tom said they were blown away at what he did. As far as Prince throwing his guitar up in the air, Prince had a roadie set up to catch it. It was reported that the roadie had then gave it to someone in the audience. That someone ended up being Oprah. What a legend Prince was.

The other band members are from Tom Petty's back up band "the Heartbreakers" and that is why they sound so tight!!! An amazing cover of this song!!! Prince is so under recognized as a guitar God!! He made that guitar not weep but SCREAM OUT" in deep emotional pain!! One of the great guitar solos ever!!!! On a side note both Prince and Tom Petty passed away because of a drug combination when they were sick and trying to make themselves feel better. So sad😭😭. To loose 2 of music's great performers!!!

Incredible performance. You don’t have to guess if it’s Dhani, he looks just like him-lol. Prince absolutely tore it up because one he was a great musician even though I was never into his music that much. Second, he felt he had to prove his ability to stick it to the naysayers. There are still so many ELO and Traveling Wilbury songs to get to. Prince’s guitar is still floating up in the air.

He DID have a dept to settle actually.. Prince was pissed he didn’t make the Rolling Stone ( maybe it was Billboards ) top 100 guitarists all time list . Every guy in this stage was in that list ( except Dhani H) Prince told them he JUST wanted the last solo to end the song . He didn’t even rehearse with them . And THaTS what happened !! bTW.. He tossed the guitar behind him to his personal Guitar tech . NOT to the crowd .
This is one of those performances that will go down in history as an all-time great. And with Prince and Tom both gone now too, it's even more special. And oh my gosh, if you get a chance, check out a side by side of George and Dhani Harrison. They look so much alike it's stunning.

Dhani is George's son; he's the spitting image of George. Mostly he was laughing at Prince's antics, I think. Steve Winwood is known for his keyboard skills, I think he had a blue sports coat on while he was playing. He was a child prodigy and was with The Spencer Davis Group at 15. As for Prince, someone said he was ticked that he didn't make a list of great guitar players so this was to show them what they missed. Great reaction!

Winwood has so many, Can’t Find My Way Home when he was with Blind Faith (Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker) is one of my all time favorites. Believe he was only 17 at that time.

Steve Winwood definitely has a unique voice. He peaked at a time when there was just too many other great artists out there. if he had come into that peak a little bit sooner or later, he would not be so overlooked today.
Love this so much. Prince is having the time of his life! And he didn’t know he’d be playing until that day when they asked him to join and do the middle solo. Then 30 mins before they go onstage, they guy doing the ending sold (I don’t know his name) said why don’t Prince and I swap and he do the ending solo, since he was also inducted that year. So they asked him if he could do the ending, and he said “I got this”. He did all of that on the spot. Totally improvised and still made it feel like it was written for that song. Fucking genius. This was also a middle finger to Rolling Stone Magazine. When they came out that year with the 100 greatest guitarists ever list, Prince wasn’t on it. I believe their next list he was #47. 💜💜💜
I’ve often wondered why Billy Preston is never mentioned. He’s playing keyboards. He is another genius. Collaborated with the Beatles a few times I believe.
Hey bud! Yeeep, will slam on the brakes every time for this one. It's one of those pieces that, every time you see it, it's like the first time. Prince was transcendent. I watch it over and over just so I can see the looks on everybody else's face. So, delighted to watch you watch this. HOF indeed. I'm just a JV musician, but it always amazes me that this song, rather spare on record, would have room for so many musicians, and everybody is perfect just where they are. And then Prince comes in and cuts everybody off at the knees. Don't sweat the Winwood bit. He was in Traffic before he went solo and bored me into a coma in the 70s. If you heard "Steve Winwood coming up!" on the radio, you changed the station or risked falling asleep at the wheel. Haven't heard much from him in the last 40 years, but to paraphrase Eddie Murphy, I'm a headbanger, so I guess I wouldn't know. Maybe I was just too young to appreciate him. And if you like the "lots of stars on stage" ethos, might I suggest absolutely anything from Satriani's G3 concerts? There were a bunch of them and legends all around. I know you're the drummer, but you appreciate genius no matter where they're standing. Adding another layer to this story. Prince had never heard the song before rehearsals. The first guitarist felt he should do the last solo over Prince…. So that’s why Prince is chilling in the background… and then said I’ll show them all😂😂😂

To be fair Prince was late for a concert that he was performing at. Prince goes back stage and talks with a member of zztop before leaving to go to perform at his next job.
No one even mentions Christopher Cross on the tambourine.
