This is EASILY one of the greatest perfomances in rock history
I was part of the choir for this show, it was an amazing experience. Dave Grohl was on drums for all the rehearsals, so it was a surprise to everyone when Jason Bonham came out for the final performance. Also, this video has footage both from the dress rehearsal, and the live performance. After the show was over, Stephen Colbert came up to me and 2 of my fellow choir members to tell us that we did a great job, it was surreal.
Choral arrangement was done by Rob Mathes, and our chorus director is Joyce Garrett. Our choir was also at Obama's inauguration, Bruce Springsteen Super Bowl, and every Christmas in Washington performance on TNT, until it was canceled.
We were drawn from a lot of different sources around the DC area, including some former High School choirs after we all graduated, some church choirs, and eventually some University of Maryland choir members.
We rehearsed every day including weekends for about 3 weeks for this, and for most of our performances
The atmosphere on that stage just seemed to be on another level.
Thank you to you and your fellow choir members, you added a layer to that version that I just can't put into words. 😊
Does it feature in your Top 10 performances?
Oh my goodness. I love this performance. The choir and Jason Bonham made it so fantastic. Thank you!
You and the entire choir, as well as the back up singers were absolutely divine! All your hard work paid off. Fantastic!!
you (and everyone involved) did a GREAT job!
Thank you all for your beautiful voices and even more beautiful souls.
The Wilson sisters are a national treasure. You know you've done something right when you get a standing ovation from the originators of the tune you just covered.
Ann and Nancy Wilson performing for Led Zeppelin. Royalty performing for royalty.
Agreed
Perfectly stated 👍👍👍
Perfect!
Salem And what the fuck have you done lately? Until you’re on stage performing for your heroes in a packed hall you don’t get to say anything.
100% your right!
Robert Plant did a 2013 radio interview and was asked about this tribute concert. When he talked about Heart's performance, he said, "I hate it when people cover Stairway To Heaven because they always f**k it up. Heart did it brilliantly and I told them so at the after party, that evening." That was so cool.❤
I totally believe it! If you watch the three guys faces, it looks like the only thing keeping them from crying with joy is that English stuff upper lip!
Heart covered them before they made it BiG
Steven Tyler ( Abby Road Medley) Kenedy Center Honors Paul McCartney 2010
Also Epic.A must reaction!! 0:12
Since time began we as people are not worthy to hear and witness such musical excellence let alone to live in the time frame that this music was created
@@tomswanson7446what a load of crap the music is made by people for people you may not be worthy of it but I Revel in and celebrate every note
This is simply one of the greatest covers ever done.. Its done with such grace, class and respect to the original without trying to be a copy... Its sheer perfection
They claimed it, they owned it, they made it their own and did the best tribute of this song ever.
@@fernandopereira2611 True... Its one of the finest covers ever done. Its actually more than a cover. It's a performance honoring both the song and its creators. They didn't try to copy Led Zeppelin at all.
Agreed - wish I had a dollar for every time I've watched it!
IT IS ITS OWN MASTERPIECE PAYING RESPECT FROM HEART TO LED ZEPPELIN. REALLY A MAJOR INFLUENCE FOR HEART. ANN AND NANCY WILSON.
That it is...PERFECTION. BEGINING TO END.
watched this 100 times and still can't finish with dry eyes!
The drummer Jason Bonham is the son of late Led Zep drummer John Bonham
and he plays the original drumkit his father used for the song
I think he was wearing his dads bowlers hat too
Jason Bonham is announced immediately before Heart walk on stage, but for some reason those interesting extra few seconds are cut from the clip that most people react to.
he is J son
@@unbrokensoul35 that tribute to Bonzo by the chorus all wearing bowler hats.....dammit, where did those onions come from......
Heart have been huge Zeppelin fans for decades. They were the perfect choice. And then Jason on drums just put the whole thing over the top.
The American Led Zeppelin. . .
And The Mighty Led are fans of Heart as well. There’s a whole story about that.
And Jason looks to the heavens at the end, bet his dad was smiling down.
Seen it a thousand times & I still get a lump in my throat. Kia kaha
Yes and he was playing his father's drum set.
Gives the "heart thump" to his chest, looks out at Robert Plant and the members and Robert Plant, gives him one back...that was one of the great moments. ♥️
pretty sure john was helping him play it
@@scotthaines1675 More than that, it was, apparently, the actual orange plexi Ludwig drum kit that his dad used on the original recording of "Stairway...".
Despite the well-deserved accolades for everyone involved in this production, the first ten seconds are all Nancy. And she's got to play it perfectly. Imagine THAT kind of pressure.
She was amazing!
The drummer,Jason, is the son of the original led zeppelin drummer, John Bonham, who died in 1980.
If Robert Plant cries, then we all cry...
Ann is just a master vocalist. This version gives me chills every time and seeing the guy's reactions is priceless. EPIC!
Am I the only person that cries when I watch this video?
I mean for fks sake, the insane amount of power coming out of ann Wilson's mouth....and that choir.... And Jason Bonham playing drums like his dad used to.... It's just to much.
I lose my mind 😭❤️❤️❤️
I tear up EVERY time I watch it. Best tribute I have ever seen in my 65 years of life!
Ann and Nancy have had a great career, but for me, this is the PEAK . This is the best live tribute ever.
Nope! I have the same emotional response every time I watch it, and that has been more than several now with all of my favorite Reactors doing their thing with it. So good!!!
ABSOLUTELY NOT... For a cover of one of the greatest songs by the greatest band to ever exist, it "moved" me (a grown 44 y/o man) in such a way mentally and emotionally that I can't begin to describe.
You just know what that "feeling" is when it starts corsing through your body like electricity.
No matter how many times I watch it I still get tears. It's so good.
There are moments in a musician's life (whether instrumentalist or vocalist) where everything feels on point, like it all comes together and your voice is hitting that amazing groove where it feels really good and smooth, and your instruments are practically singing as they play the most gorgeous notes, and you connect with the audience, the energy is there, and everything feels so perfect in the moment... I feel like this performance encapsulates that kind of moment. Everyone on that stage was on FIRE. They played and sang their hearts out and gave everything, and it showed. Just beautiful. They ROCKED. :)
The greatest cover in the history of music !!!
You need to go back and hear Heart's Cover Versions of a multitude of Zep songs from the 70's. They make this look pale, as Heart was at their Peak then. Zep gave them full permission to do so after catching one of their shows, where they pulled out a couple of Zep Standards...
I can never get over the last phrase of this rendition 'To be a rock and not to Roll' and how it is sung by Ann Wilson with so much heartfelt grit passion and emotion, it just brings me to tears..
When you have the band rocking to you doing their song its awesome, when you make them cry you are amazing. Heart showed out.
At some point, this transcends being a tribute to Zep, and becomes an anthem to the spirit of Rock.....
Heart said, hold our beers gentlemen we will show you how it’s done....
I've seen this dozens of times, get choked up EVERY time.
That is my favorite cover of all time. Especially when you figure in the arena, the audience, and the fact that Jason Bonham is playing drums in front of the three remaining members of Zeppelin, it’s amazing. Ann Wilson is one of the few singers that can pull that song off as flawlessly as she did. Beautifully arranged and executed.
you can see Robert Plant say "My God" when the large choir was revealed
I think he said "Oh, my" then John Paul Jones said "What?!" then Jimmy Page went with "OH F**K!!!" which was the correct response. Jimmy Page was having an absolute blast.
Exactly! Most amazing video EVER! Just ❤️this. Watched many times also.
To sing that In front of the writers and performers that is the great Led zeppelin ,perfection
Epic. Epic. EPIC...
One of the best covers of one of the GREATEST SONGS, in front of the Greatest band at the Kennedy Center Honors!
Doesn't get more nerve wracking.. flawless performance.
The tears are impossible to staunch.
Jason on the drums is perfection for this tribute.
The importance of that moment, having Jason on drums with Paige, Plant and Jones in attendance, John in the heavens...
TIMELESS😍
Ann Wilson (the singer) was 62 when she performed this. I know that is not considered "old" in today's day and age, but most singers hang it up or at least scale it way back by that age. Ann nailed it. Nailed it!
One of the greatest Covers ever made....and damn,Bonzo, you could be proud of your son.....
I love how the smile never left your face during their entire performance! 👍
No one knew Jason was going to be playing drums that night, it was a shock to all there; Robert Plant was moved to tears because of his late best friend in the world John Bonham's son was playing drums in his dad's derby hat that he used to wear, and all the choir had a derby on as well. At the end of the song Jason acknowledged his dad's best friend with a heart felt salute to Robert, which was accepted in kind. Classy!!
Jason is Robert's godson so that also was another reason it was so emitional
Loved this video. I watched this when it was on television. Seeing Jason playing the drums was a tear jerker and brought the guys to tears. I watch the Kennedy Center Honors each year. Absolutely awesome.
Covering maybe the most famous rock song ever in front of the of the band themselves live !! That takes a lot of Balls. Kickass rendition and great reaction!
If you're not brought to tears when Ann brings it home after the guitar solo, I don't know what to say to you.. It was a Masters class by her...
7:58 the voice of ann wilson at this moment, gets to give chills ... feeling maximum
I cannot believe how long she holds that note.
Damn. I LOVE these reactions videos because it's like listening to the song again for the very first time. This is one of THE BEST COVERS ever done. Ann and Nancy have created a masterpiece.
I love seeing the many celebrities rockin' out to this: Jimmy Kimmel, Stephen Colbert, Debbie Allen, Bonnie Raitt, and my favorite - Yo Yo Ma (virtuoso cellist)! what a performance!
Obama's as well. David Letterman sitting next to the band in the balcony. Such a beautiful performance. I still get overly emotional everytime I watch this.
And the woman behind and between John and Robert is none other than Carole King
billy connolly in there too..!
I've watched so many reaction videos to this song and thought I was the only one who recognized Yo Yo Ma!
Ann Wilson was 62 when this was performed. Not that she was old. But it shows the phenomenal care she has taken of her voice.
Rock legends performing the song of rock gods in the presence of those rock gods. The Wilson sisters have nerves of steel!
Nancy Wilson played the intro guitar at the beginning, in my opinion Nancy Wilson is " Underrated " as a guitarist, she has killer guitar skills and can hold her own with a lot of top players. Ann Wilson has one of the greatest voices in the world. When I first watched this ... I automatically knew it was going to be an epic performance. Heart has been doing their thing since the 70's and is my favorite girl led band of all time! 👍👍😎
Warren Lambert: Her intro was done smoother that Jimmy's was, even on the album. Definitely better than he was in concert. I saw them 4 times and he was great 2 of them times but sucked the other 2 because of booze and/or drugs. But even in those 2 good times he always changed it up live from the studio versions. Sometime better and sometimes so so.
Should have let Nancy play the solo too. The guy on the electric was easily the weakest link. Just bad note choices.
Still a great performance overall though.
@@sillysausage4549 - Seriously??? Wayne Fontaine is a great guitarist and did this proud. BTW - Nancy is a very good guitarist - not great. She could no more play that electric solo than my cat could.
she's definitely a good guitarist but I wouldn't say she's anything special. it sounds like you have an obvious bias with this being your favorite girl led band of all time.
@@sillysausage4549 Shane Fontayne, is an English rock guitarist. Active since the 1970s, he was the guitarist for Bruce Springsteen during the 1992-1993 "Other Band" Tour, as Springsteen had disbanded his own E Street Band three years earlier.[1] During his career Fontayne has worked with Ian Hunter, Van Zant, John Waite, Chris Botti, Joe Cocker, Johnny Hallyday, Marc Cohn, Randy VanWarmer, Graham Nash, Mick Ronson and others.[2].
He has worked with a range of artists, including Steve Forbert (Little Stevie Orbit, 1980 album), Maria McKee (Maria McKee, 1989 album) and later Joe Cocker (Heart & Soul, 2004 album), Richard Marx (My Own Best Enemy, 2004 album).
He has also been the guitarist for the French rocker Johnny Hallyday for his 1995 tour "Lorada tour", and 1996 concert in Las Vegas. In addition, Fontayne has been singer/songwriter Marc Cohn's touring guitarist since 1998. He has recently worked with Crosby, Stills & Nash and Graham Nash (solo) on tour (also producing the latter's 2016 album This Path Tonight).
A lots of people don't realise that Anne Wilson was 62 when she did this. Amazing vocal & amazing cover generally!!
Imagine performing in front of original members. They are legends Btw the drummer is the son of Bonzo 💔
Such pressure. They did great and are amazing in their own right! :)
Who could pull this off in front of Led Zepplin? Ann and Nancy Wilson are two of the very limited few.
Who put a thumbs down? SERIOUSLY How could you not appreciate this performance. NUTS
Trolls will be Trolls.
kens32052 Rap fans. Thumb down because they don’t know MUSIC
Zeppelin purists hate any cover bands, versions etc
The same kind of people who gave the Grand Canyon 1star on trip advisor - trolls.
A real IDIOT that’s who, without an ounce of appreciation for great music!
I couldn't begin to guess how many times I have seen this clip - but it gets me. Every. Single. Time.
Suzie Q, sidebar?
There is an entire gamut of emotional hard-driving rock, ethereal ballads, and vocal godessliness to be had by even a cursory listen to ANYTHING by "Heart". During their era, a lion's share of the female talent in rock was embodied in a pair of sisters --- didn't hurt that they were ALSO hot as hell.
Thank you 😊 for letting the whole performance play out without talking.
Much appreciated because the song builds & builds so it should be heard uninterrupted.
Yes, their facial expressions and a few "perfects" added a sweet accent to the performance. Well done Wolf HunterZ.
The baby that Led Zeppelin composed is such a beautiful piece of music that can be augmented so brilliantly with an orchestra and choir.
Imagine the feeling on stage through this!
Absolutely stunning performance! In my 65 years, I've never seen or heard any song so beautifully and organically grown layer by perfectly formed layer, from start to finish. Brings tears every time I listen! 😢
Bravo to all who participated in its creation! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
🎸🎸🎸🎸FIRST HEARD this song 8/21/71 in concert at LA Forum before it was released on vinyl in November 71, I was 19 and we were all smoking pot...🎸🎸🎸
I saw Led Zeppelin perform April 8, 1970 in Dorton Arena, Raleigh, NC. I was 17 and that was best concert to this day I ever saw. That puts them above Jimi Hendrix, Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top, Allman Brothers Band, Jethro Tull and many others. Watching this amazing video did bring tears to my old eyes.
They asked the members of Led Zeppelin back in the day who their favorite band/musicians were and they said Heart.
First time that I saw this video my initial thought was how Robert Plant looked as if he was ready to cry through most of the song. But Jimmy Paige was smiling and really enjoying himself.
I love Heart one of the best female bands ever.I been lucky enough to see HEART ❤️ 4 times life. Keep up all your great reaction. Love you guys. Like I have told you before you can feel the music 🎶 in your sould. Rock On ❤️
Heart is the ONLY band who could ever pull that off soooo well :) Peace and Love from Canada eh :) sorry :)
That was Beautiful brought tears to my eyes Thank you Sweetheart Hugs be Safe,
Hi Guys. I'm following Ann and Nancy on Facebook. Ann was 62 and Nancy 58. The sisters still rock hard. They did a tour last summer after almost 3 yrsl. It was July thru October with one day off and almost 2 weeks in Sept. I still think that they are both still beautiful. Ann and Nancy killed it. This was a year before they got into the Rock Hall of Fame. Ann and Nancy were on tour at the time.
An amazing performance. Ann and Nancy Wilson are fantastic as always. I never get sick of watching this performance.
I love watching your takes You don't interrupt often you are angel's.
Best Cover Version Ever!🤘🤘🤘
Heart (live is a must)
Love Alive
Straight On
Even it Up
Crazy on you
This is more than great. Mind is literally blown!!👀
"Rock legends performing for Rock Gods"
I agree dude... to me, this is the best cover of any song ever.
robert thinking wow. that was me in 73 at MSG. jimmy killing it on that double neck guitar. jpj and bonzo backing it all up. epic. heart are awesome. they nailed it..
I've watched this so many times, just fantastic...if you didn't know, Ann Wilson was 62yr at this time..
When your performance makes Robert friggin Plant cry, you know you just made that song even more legendary than it already was!
I watched several folks' comments on this performance and all of them said what you did..........best cover that they have ever seen.
Perhaps one of the greatest songs ever written..just my opinion
opinion indeed... not one of the greatest... 1 of the most legendary ever
WOW! My goosebumps have goosebumps...
It's Amazing how Sheldon Cooper plays that guitar solo
My heart wrenches everytime i see this video when Jason Bonham looks up when she sings heaven to his dad
Heart has stated many times that Zeppelin was a big influence on them. I saw Heart way back in 1977 during their "Little Queen" tour on the boardwalk at Convention Hall in Asbury Park, NJ across from the legendary Stone Pony. In fact Led Zeppelin played there in August of 1969, instead of at Woodstock. The date was August 16th the day Elvis died and they dedicated "Rock n Roll' to the King during the encore to finish off the show.
Ann said they were a bit worried about doing the song in front of Robert, Jimmy & John and afterward they all went to dinner together and she said Robert Plant said he hated when people covered Stairway, that night he didn't mind.
She is a pro " she can throw her voice with clarity and still can be heard even with a big band as well as a choir .
Jimmy Page.. Doing that solo in front of him and execute beautifully is amazing. Jason and the choir behind them are using that hat because was a signature item by John Bonham. Also Bonham was Robert Plant's best friend. His lost is still felt by him, and the others as well. That's why you can see him crying. And when Ann sings "and she's buying a stairway to heaven" Jason looks up... Just amazing!
Heart, (Wilson sisters) have always treasured Led Zeppelin as artists and icons. Heart has covered several Zeppelin songs in the past. It was a natural fit for Heart to pay tribute
Aloha I’m sorry that I watch your timeline awhile back and I enjoy it yes long live Music you guys are really Cool I’m a fan keep on rocking
This is so beautiful it makes me cry....
Such a paradoxical set of circumstance❤️. Ripples of trinity...
By reading some of the comments, a lot of people don’t seem to know who Heart is. Two sisters, Ann and Nancy Wilson. Amazing artists since mid-70s. Ann sings, Nancy is blonde on guitar. Check them out. ❤️
Absolutely hands down the greatest cover EVER!!
Sooo f..kn awesome!! I❤HEART!!
The part that got me emotional was watching Jason, the son of the late drummer John (Bonzo) Bonham playing the drums. He did His Father PROUD !!!
Ladies and gentlemen, Sheldon Cooper on the guitar.
Plays a hell of a solo...
Yep, Shane Fontayne is an excellent guitarist. He is well acquainted with all three members of Zep. He was 58 at the time, and looked 20 years younger.
He fuckin shredded it
I love how you both love what you do... Awesome
The song always will get me as we played it at my late brother funeral, he was/is a Zeppelin fan
The bowler hats were a lovely touch, Respect to Bonzo & that he is missed.
Led Zeppelin we're getting a ward for The Stairway to Heaven in 2012 it had a 50-year anniversary and Miss Heart was 62 years Young when she did this performance and she nailed it
The absolute most amazing cover of this song I have ever heard!!!!
the finest cover I have ever heard, many try, very very few succeed
Cry everytime
This was just amazing. Seeing Jason at the beginning you can see him with his eyes closed and you know he’s thinking of his dad. Really moving moment to go along with just an amazing performance from Heart, Jason, the background elements and in this setting with Led Zeppelin watching with the President. It’s just awesome. 🤙🏻
in my opinion this song is the best song for all time!!!! When I died on my grave I wish there would play this song. LZ is the great rockband for all time
She is amazing
Love Heart!! What a beautiful performance. And the choir...what an outstanding touch. You should listen to Heart sing Rock n Roll by LZ......amazing!
Heart definitely the first girls of ROCK
So great to see him working doing his best
Also another great cover is the tribute to George Harrison at the Rock and roll Hall of Fame. Prince plays an amazing guitar solo at the end.
Amazing vocals. Ann Wilson when she sang this was 65yrs old
The best cover! Heart did such a great job and seeing Robert Plant get some tears in his eyes was so touching. 💓💓💕💗💙💙💜💜
AWESOME !!! Can't say more.
I Love Heart, and they killed this rendition! No doubt!
