    I'm a junior doctor in Australia, and it's fascinating to see the differences!
    At my hospital, first-year residents work around 40 standard hours a week (normally more than that, but it's usually paid as overtime), we work maybe 1 in 4 weekends, and we do zero night shifts. There's no such thing as a 24-hour on-call: the residents doing nights are doing it as a rotation of just night shifts for a couple months. It's only when you get to be a senior registrar on a training program that the crazy nights on call begin...

    You are freaking INCREDIBLE. I absolutely admire you. I work a 32hr week... and this coming week I offered to do an extra half day.. I was dreading a 36h week until I saw this... how do you even.... how are you that driven? How do you even .... how can you fit life in.. I am truly stumped and inspired!

      And you know whats worse, it’s incredibly difficult (or so I’ve heard) to become a doctor in Canadá. Apparently they only accept about 10~20% of the applicants each year. In contrast to the US which is apparently 40~50% 😭
      Maybe if they just admitted more doctors, they wouldn’t have to overwork them.
      Also, this is really sad for me because i wanted to become a doctor in Canadá 😭😭😂

But i do love when i worked a 24 hour then get home to then get called out to a fire and then as we get back to the station get called out again for a burnt food call and have to vent the house then ive been working for like 30 hours and go home turn off everything and sleep for like 20 hours.

    This is my first time commenting since discovering your channel. I am an elementary school teacher in Missouri, and have no ambitions in the medical field, but I find your videos to be fascinating! I love your positive attitude and your insights into the life of a doctor. Although I don’t work nearly 75 hours per week, teachers definitely work more than just our 40 contracted hours, and even that is tough. So to see you so positive about working so hard is very inspiring. Thanks for the work you do and for sharing it with the world on RUclips!

Although we are in different professions with their own unique challenges. it is interesting and comforting to see as well what we have in common. The quest for work-life balance, staying positive, dealing with imposter syndrome, time management- it's universal. These videos have definitely motivated me!

    So the max is 80 hrs that you're not supposed to go over, but its exceeded all the time, everywhere. Glad you showed legitimate hours. Most people unfamiliar have no idea how much work is asked of residents. Imagine if you were a surgeon! I wish more people knew how incredibly difficult it is for families of MDs going thru residency. Stay strong there is a reward!

    I love what you say at the end! A lot of people act like it’s insane the amount of hours doctors work. Yes it is definitely a lot and definitely tiring, but many people already work over the “40 hour average” work week. That shouldn’t discourage anyone from being a doctor because many already work close to those hours in other jobs anyways.

    How do you handle this sleep schedule? Once I worked second shift and it was hard. Everybody is right, you have a LOT of energy. I almost went with the violin, but I chose the clarinet. I got a flu shot last Thursday!! My mom doesn't believe in vaccines (she watched Vaxxed). I still believe in getting it though, I'm around a lot of people (and I volunteer for a food pantry).

    • @BhappyD
      @BhappyD 6 лет назад +19

      Thank you so much for getting your flu shot! I'm extremely immunocompromised, and just getting a simple cold can land me in the hospital very sick, so flu season especially is a scary time of year for me! I so appreciate you thinking of others and not just focusing on your own needs. The whole anti-vaccine movement is a terrifying thing, and there is so much propaganda and lies being spread, that people without a solid background of medical training easily fall victim to believing just because their unsupported fears about vaccines (due to the false propaganda) are being "confirmed" by "medical professionals" in these "documentaries", that not only cherry-pick data they use as "proof", but also straight out lie for financial gain (as most of them have actually lost their medical license). It's truly a horrifying movement that we are already seeing the devastating effects of as these old diseases of the past, that were eradicated by vaccines, are now coming back. I commend you for not blindly following your mother, and for being able to seek the truth outside of the anti-vaccine propaganda. I truly feel for your mother. I know she means well, and is only trying to do the best she can at being proactive about her health (and yours). Sadly, she is exactly the type of person these "documentaries" are targeted towards, and without having a true medical understanding of vaccines, it's easy for someone to let fear cloud their objectiveness towards their opinion on vaccines rather than basing their opinion on solid facts and research. They hear scary sounding ingredients (that actually aren't so scary when you understand advanced chemistry, and how those ingredients are actually processed harmlessly by the body), and they hear what they think are "facts" which have no proof supporting them, and they are fear mongered into believing things that aren't true. I hope with time that your mother will see the good that vaccines do! Vaccines save lives, and it's not just your own life that is saved, you're also saving the lives around you just by being vaccinated! God bless! 💗🙏🏻💗

      Hey Anna! ooooh awesome to hear you are on an IM rotation right now! I know it can be really tough between the hours and the amount of studying you need to do, but I think it's one of the most beneficial rotations (although I may be a TINY bit biased as an IM resident hahahah!)

      Hey Siobhan! Thank you so much for replying, I truly appreciate it. It can be really tough sometimes but it's so so worth it. I have to agree, IM is just a really interesting and fascinating field. It has bits of everything, including the most common semiology a patient could present and good communication skills also needed while you're trying to figure out what the patient may have. It allows you to learn every day and keep yourself up to date. You can tell I'm really enjoying my rotation so I may be a TINY bit biased too ;)

    I can't even fathom working 80 hours a week as a doctor. I've only been accustomed to 100-120 hours. I remember the time I had to do EOD on calls. shudders

    I´m infectious disease resident in Brazil and i work something close to 100 hours a week, I can totally understand you. Unfortunately I have no time for my clarinet, gym or cooking. It can get really hard.
    Its fun though... Lot of science, rare cases and things to learn.

    Hi Siobhan, I'm really considering studying medicine, but I'm not sure how I'll balance other things in my life. I was so happy to find your channel as you are, like me, really interested in music. I play the piano and partake in sports too. How do you balance these elements such as time to practice music and be a doctor?

    Greeeeat video! The amount of hours that a doctor spends in the hospital kind of scares me and makes me think that a doctor is not able to have a social life... But as you said you can shape your future later as you want :)

    You're awesome Siobhan. Love to see you playing your violin - I'm a professional pianist and have had an interesting career but since becoming sick in my twenties with autoimmune conditions I've secretly wanted to become a physician. Thinking of retiring from the keys and trying my chances at med school... late in life (mid thirties!) I must be crazy but will keep watching your channel for inspiration. Best wishes.

    Hi , i wonder that how many inpatients are you responsible from when you're on call?
    Maybe you won't believe me but i am working 90-103 hours in a week as the second-year pediatric surgeon resident, we are on call for 34 hours(except friday and saturday call-they are 25 hours because the after day is weekend) and we have 10 night shifts in a month and 3 of them are at the weekend so i spend most of my time at the hospital.these days when i am about to give up to love my job, i came across with your videos and your smile and energy give me happiness and hope, thank you very much!!

    • @rehsa2194
      @rehsa2194 5 лет назад

      Dr Selin I absolutely believe you. Sounds right for surgery for sure. I get off easy in psych, but it’s still usually around 72 hrs a week, unless it’s a 24hr weekend call week which adds 12 more hrs. If I get a golden weekend then it’s closer to 60hrs.
