Adult Beginner Violin - 1 year progress

  • I am 30 years old and I have been learning the violin for 1 year today.
I have wanted to play the violin since the 4th grade when a classmate brought her violin and her violin teacher to school and played a duet for show-and-tell one day. My parents didn't send me to lessons and I never had enough money for an instrument or lessons fees on my own until recently.
I dove head first into it, bought my own instrument and stared going to lessons regularly once a week for the first 6 months, and twice per week from months 6-9. When I moved back to the USA because of all the lock-downs, I couldn't find a teacher so I have been learning on my own ever since.
The past couple of months I've felt really down on myself, comparing myself to other "adult beginner progress" videos and feeling like I just don't measure up, especially considering I practice every day, and up until month 10 I practiced a few hours per day. But I have to remember, I'm doing this because I love it and if I'm a little slow at improving, so what? I'll get better.
I'll become a true LingLing (wannabe) someday, I just have to keep practicing 40 hours every day. ;)

As a musician, I can tell you that even though you may feel like you're stagnant in your ability, as long as you're practicing consistently, you're getting better. Your brain is making different connections every time you practice. Some days, it will be like, "woah, where did this come from?" Most days are a fun* challenge, though. 🙂 Happy practicing! Let me know if I can help 👍🏽

Good luck for your learning process. Nice video! I have been on that road since I was 16-17 years old and I am now 34, with the exception that I had already some musical background. I never stopped playing and my time of pratice increased as I got more motivated. A different teacher and a better sound quality violin helped a lot. I can say that I only noticed a greater progress many years after I started playing. My learning process was markedly by steps. Although I see many adult students progressing a lot in the first 2 years that did not happen with me. During the first years, I used to make a harsh sound on the violin. It seems like you are a way forward. Impressive!

My dear...I was a professional violinist… I must tell you the progress you’ve made in one year it’s more like a student who has played for four years. You have a special talent that should be nurtured...At the rate you learn you should be able to play in a community orchestra in about four years if you stick with it. It is possible to do Vibrato in such a short period. It depends on the person's skill level and other stuff. I learned vibrato within one month of learning the violin (without skipping any day) and i was desperate to learn vibrato cuz it makes my out of tune stuff sound better when playing infrot of ppl. The way i learnt it in such a short period is by analysing the movement and technical side of it. From the tip of the finger upto the the shoulder to make sure i'm doing the right thing. First few days i almost gave up cuz my finger wouldn't listen to me but suddenly one day i tried it and it worked like a miracle. Well it's not actually a miracle cuz what happened was my body learnt it and built the neccessary things for me to do it and i did it. It's specially very easy for Adult beginner's cuz we understand things better than a little kid.

@@xaladrez7811 it’s still better to be able to play correctly in tune before you add on vibrato, idk if you have a lessons teacher, but in my lessons I always had to practice vibrato with a tuner and metronome so I only waved my intonation a certain amount and at certain intervals. It takes incredible precision to be able to do the correct amount of vibrato.

I played violin from 11 years old to 18 years old. From 11 to 13 I had a really good teacher. Then, due to arthritis she had to retire and my learning and playing went down hill. :-( Back then there was no internet or DVDs. I've taken up guitar since (self-taught by watching videos online and DVDs), both with pick and finger-style and I can honestly say guitar is way easier, even finger-style. There are so many things to learn on a violin and you need a good teacher. But keep practicing and learning on your own till you find a good teacher, either in person or online. Wishing you the best!

You go, kiddo! I got my first fiddle when I retired at 65 (last week of October, 2018). I never had the opportunity as a child because I was deemed "too old". At the time they wouldn't take you on as a student unless you were ideally aged 5 or so. I was 12. The world of being a violin student has changed for the better, in my opinion. If I can offer one thing, maybe just consider REEEAAAAALLLLYYYY slowing down your tempos - there is nothing worse for muscle memory and intonation than just blasting through a piece faster than you can control the sound. This is great advice for ANY instrument! To add to the comment: I've been playing guitar for quite a while and I started playing the piano. Higher quality output happens when you really slow down and do it as perfect as possible as slow as 45 BPM. It is far easier to fix learned mistakes this way. If you go too fast, you learn mistakes and bad habits along the way. THAT is hard to fix down the road.
Remember, going slow allows you to build a solid foundation for your house. Otherwise, you are building a house of cards that will collapse at the slightest bump.

This is sound advice, Scarborough Fair did my knappa in. Slowed down to the point it doesn't sound like anything like the music. Piece by piece (no pun intended) it comes together. Few days later my wife couldn't believe the difference (and she hates the violin) 👍. Martial arts you learn slow for correct form and speed, strength and dexterity comes in your bodies own time.

A lot of people really worry about starting as an adult because it feels like we'll never get anywhere. At least, thats how i felt. And now I've been playing for 2 years, I'd never be without it.

Hi there! Just saw your playing you’ve made amazing progress! I’m a professional violist but I teach violin since no one plays viola haha! If I could offer one bit of advice, I noticed that your left hand moves a lot when you are playing. I always try to explain that it’s important to make your fingers do the work! By constantly accommodating your fingers with your hand, you’re creating 2 motions (moving hand and placing finger) instead of 1 motion (placing finger). It’s important to find a hand position that can accommodate the placement of your first finger and pinky to really optimize the efficiency of your playing and it will feel a lot “easier” in the hand because it won’t be under so much stress! It’s also how people play super fast! If you look closely at super talented violinists playing really difficult pieces like Sibelius violin concerto, their hand really only moves to shift! Hope this helps! Keep up the great work :))

same sentiments in the description as well. i always wanted to learn an instrument when i was young, but my mom couldn't afford one back then, now that i have my first violin (although a bad violin), i'm still kinda down bc i don't know if i'm gonna have time for learning and practice due to work. then i thought, "how am i going to keep up with them, this seems impossible, they started when they're so young, i have zero knowledge and no background on music" and so on
then i also remembered, of course you'll suck at it first, but when you remember the reason why you're practicing (for me: to create and recreate music), this nugget of childlike wonder will help you get better at it.
this video is really important to me, it made me realize it's never too late. thanks for sharing your journey. thank you. keep practicing!

It's brilliant to see your progress.
A am 73 and started to play violin in April 2020. I had no musical background either and play everything by ear but also try reading a bit of music .
I use both a low cost Acoustic violin and a good Yamaha electric. I did start recording my progress but regret wiping quite a bit but will now record in earnest.
I felt over confident so took my tapes off recently but ended up putting the low three back. Strangely I never look at where my fingers are going and the intonation isn't too bad so I guess I could remove the tapes.
It's great to see that we all go through much the same learning process.
I do think that most players are hindered by being worried about making too.much noise and mutes seem to ruin the sound so adjustable volume electrics are really good but they don't sound the same.
    Keep at it ...!
