    imagine being one of the devs working with the iris devkit and nintendo calling you up and basically going "hey we're adding a second screen and also it's a touchscreen, you have like 8 months before manufacture to integrate it into your game"

    One of the leaks has the ensata cvs repo, the earliest versions call themselves the "IRIS Software Emulator". Also ensata was developed by intelligent systems not nintendo

      @@techshibe137 Considering Intelligent Systems made some of the GBA's hardware, when did game development really start on the GBA? I know at least for Super Circuit, the game started off as a port of "Super Mario Kart" to test the GBA hardware, so I could only assume some games started development really early on in the GBA's development.

    awesome video! loving how in-depth some of the information is. i never knew about the existance of the iris until now, but it seems like a pretty cool system to be honest, though i am glad it turned into the DS

    I've heard that Yamauchi suggested a second screen after seeing the PSP and thinking "If they're going to show off a wide screen then we're going to show off two regular ones!"... which actually worked somehow

    Funny how we kinda came into full circle now, now that the DS/3DS era is over we are back into a single-screened handheld (actually hybrid), Switch family!

    I always thought that Iris already had a touch screen, so the switch to Nitro only added the top screen to the equation. Maybe I was mistaken.

    pretty interesting stuff! I've just seen your other video about the INDY as well which was also very good. the "ensata" emulator name implies some relation to the actual iris flower, but based on the naming conventions here, it seems like Nintendo were reusing the names of old SGI workstations as internal development names for the consoles actually? it makes a lot of sense considering a ton of n64 development was done largely on SGI hardware

    I wonder if Project Iris was the code name for the trademark Nintendo filed for the "City Boy" and this was sort of kept in reserve in case the DS flopped?

    • @RGDYouTube
      @RGDYouTube  7 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah, that's a personal theory of mine as well. I've learned since making the video that the Iris lived on briefly afterwards as a console styled after phones/PDAs of the time with a slideout keyboard (like the PSP Go); it definitely would've fit with that concept.

    • @RGDYouTube

      Nintendo filed a trademark for the name 'City Boy' in early 2004, so it could've been that.

      @@RGDRUclips i thought that was to stop that GameBoy clone that was also going to be called the "CityBoy" from getting released in Western markets. It was a badgered version of one of those that was common in China (blanked on the name of the original clone sorry).
      It was snuffed out very quickly soon as Nintendo found out the project died. Still it was a near 1-1 clone of the Gameboy just with a custom BIOS (was to get around copy-write stuff).
      Fun fact there was a released bootleg called the CityBoy, but that is unrelated.
      [ No idea what it is apart from some bit of rubbish that took 2 button cells and had no screen, likely made sounds or something ]

It is great that other people is willing to research about the system and I am not interested in becoming famous or anything but I've spent months with it to get it up and running and I think communications is a better approach to find more details about it.

    the reason is simple, nintendo realized a long time ago that they had absolutely nothing to offer because all the good developers were making exclusives with sony or microsoft, or spreading across all available platforms. so they decided "fuck it, every console is now a gimmick to catch idiots". and thats how we got to the "switch"- literally just a low powered shit tier android tablet that was like 3 years outdated in power when it was released, and is virtually unplayable on large screen TV's due to the sub-720p resolution the games run in.
