Something interesting about the Wii's design: It doesn't have a normal operating system. All games run on bare metal. The Wii System Menu is practically just a game built into the console, and the popup menu when you press the home button is built into every game individually. However, the Wii also has a co-processor called "Starlet," which *does* have its own OS. That's the one mentioned in this video. It's in charge of trying keep things secure and providing API interfaces to games (e.g. USB access).
The DSi is very similar, there's some boot stuff that initialises things like the Wi-Fi card, and then it just kicks you into the main menu. All the apps are just ROMs, even the main menu.
It was a decent amount more powerful and gamecube was more powerful then ps2. Why dont you compare the xbox one x to the series s. It is a smaller percentage improvement over it then the wii was to the gamecube
To be fair the Wii had all of these peripherals and Wii motes so it was a Basically a GameCube with Side Activities/Mission 😂 The Wiii U is basically a GameCube and Wii Tied together and the switch is a Wii U game pad with detachable controllers 😂
There's still weird indev bits and hardware being discovered for even the GBA, and given newer consoles are so much more complex I doubt we'll be "done" learning about the newer hardware for some time.
Hello right there. I'm an owner of 2 RVL-Ocean-X12 boards and 1 RVL-Turtle-01 board. I'm currently doing research to make this work and see what's inside "RVL-Turtle". What I can say based on exterior, and research : The RVL-Ocean-X12 board is an optical disc emulator. It also seem to be the power card since you have to plug a GCN AC Adapter to make it power up. The RVL-Turtle-01 board is a "disc" containing software or firmware. Since no one was able to make it work, nobody, even me, can theorise on what's inside. Since it's an ODEM, the ports to "connect to the Wii disc drive" are probably ports that connect to the Wii directly and substitute the mechanical drive. I'm not sure on this one, I have to grab another Wii to further research (and also a GCN). Since I have 2 boards, I can spot what's missing on the better one. It's just a matter of 1 capacitor, 3 small components (that I have on the bad board) and 1 switch. Although I might not even need the small components and the switch, because it has clearly never been there before (contrary to the capacitor which is ripped off). On my YT channel, I will soon do a presentation of what it is (only in french though). But I will, on my Twitter, provide all the small details of my progress in english. This board is quite mysterious and I want to know what's inside the RVL Turtle.
Wow, this looks like an surprisingly in-depth explanation of how nintendo developed the Wii... Without the Wii! Thanks for making this video, this is really fascinating content.
This is a pretty clever workaround, for hardware limitations at the time, and the fact that they combined all that, into one little white box, is pretty incredible when you think about it, and my original Wii still works to this day, as if it just came of the box!
Your content is very good and really informative ,you should get more visibility, i will share this video to some of my friends, i hope you do well in the future.

Oh yes I noticed😅 A few weeks back my girlfriend was dancing to some tiktok and my brain went "wait... This is familiar..." And now this tune is absolutely everywhere, and I just got a feeling the algorith has just gone full driftveil these days😅
Just wanted to mention, the Homebrew Channel audio you use for your intro seems a bit loud and bass boosted. Might just be me though, as I'm wearing headphones.
It can’t be any stranger then this, that’s like prototyping a snes using a nes with a mmc5 expansion chip and a pc with more ram and rom to simulate 16bit graphics that way, 1 thing I NEVER understood is why everytime you start up a wii game you will see that ugly curved background border,as if nintendo wanted to fake a curved crt screen on it dor retro gamers or something,i just didn’t like that .
It was supposed to mimick a wall of TVs at a store, each displaying a different channel - LCDs were new at the time and the curved CRT shape was probably seen as more evocative.
Great video but the thumbnail needs some work. I‘d suggest you use a bright picture of the gamecube with slightly better visible text. Otherwise this video was wasted effort 😓
Thanks for your feedback; I tried to make sure that the text would stand out in the thumbnail, which is why the picture of the GameCube is dimmed. Even if the dim GameCube prevents it from getting more views, I don't consider it wasted effort. - K

So is the Wii just a repackaged GameCube but with extra hardware?
Was the version of Vista they used a prototype or did they get a final build early?
Sorry for the confusion; they used XP, the text is just there to clarify because the footage shows Vista. - K

Why did they use a Windows machine just for a disc drive, why couldn't they do that on the Linux machine too 😭
It was based on the existing GameCube disc drive emulator software for Windows, easier to use two PCs than to rewrite it for Linux.
What a mess, it’s too many stuff glued together to make it work.
