The Lost Nvidia 3DS Prototype
In 2006, the Nintendo DS was taking off. The launch of the DS Lite had firmly cemented it as a replacement for the GBA lineup, and Nintendo’s new casual brand strategy with the DS Lite and the upcoming Wii got a whole new audience interested in Nintendo’s products. As the Wii approached launch, Nintendo began work on a brand new DS model, with hardware that would be a closer match to Sony’s PSP. With mobile 3D graphics chips still being in their infancy, Nintendo turned to the GPU company Nvidia to collaborate on the development of a custom processor. But as years passed, this Nvidia DS disappeared, with the next DS model being an incremental upgrade using largely the same chips as the or...

Nintendo's Prototype Wii Emulator for the GameCube
Просмотров 88 тыс.Год назад
In 2005, Nintendo’s engineers were working on early prototypes for their next console, known to fans as the Nintendo Revolution and eventually the Wii. But even though most of its hardware had already been designed by the end of the year, they hadn’t produced any working consoles yet. The console that Nintendo showed off at E3 2005 was just a plastic shell, as core components hadn’t even been p...
Nintendo's Lost DS Prototype: Project IRIS
Просмотров 16 тыс.2 года назад
In 2002, Nintendo was in a bad situation. The Nintendo 64 was on its way out, the new GameCube was struggling to get off the ground and while the Game Boy Advance was doing fairly well, mobile technology was advancing quickly and a competitor could have jumped in and outdone it at any moment. Nintendo’s hardware development teams started work on a new console, codenamed Iris. This console would...
Early GameCube IPL (BIOS) Animation

This is a recording of a very early GameCube boot animation running on a Wii debugging console (NDEV).
Haha Persona music go BRRRRRRRR.........
This story sounds somewhat similar to GBAs Project Atlantis but then an incremental update with GBC came in
Nintendo 65 (probably the prototype version of the Nintendo GameCube)
I've heard that Yamauchi suggested a second screen after seeing the PSP and thinking "If they're going to show off a wide screen then we're going to show off two regular ones!"... which actually worked somehow
Just further proof that the Wii was just a Game Pube that could take full size disks and used motion controls.
I miss your videos man. Is there any new content coming?
Yeah, we're just kinda slow.
Nintendo: "Emulation stifles innovation" Also Nintendo:
now wiiu on wii
does it play the emulators included in the zelda collectors edition correctly?
We did not try that, and the board went back to the owner after this. I can ask him to test it out and see what happens. We will be install an A13 engineering sample onto a board soon enough and we will test it all out then.
I always thought that Iris already had a touch screen, so the switch to Nitro only added the top screen to the equation. Maybe I was mistaken.
my GOD TURN DOWN THAT VOLUME MAN, it aint hard to edit audio on free software just... jesus christ that's fucking LOUD
1:22 when you put a music that turns into meme
your intro is good
What's the music from the credits? I recognize the pokemon gen 5 soundfront but I cent figure out which track it is (if it even is an official one and not something custom made)
National Park - Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver
@@RGDRUclips thanks!
omg toothless meme in backroung musac blauh bauh al h
Other info in the rumor that matched the final product was backward compatibility. 3DS was fully backward compatible with all DS software that didn't use GBA slot accessories, as well as DSi Ware titles, and, although it did not have the slot, was fully backward compatible with Game Boy Advance software _(all_ retail units contain a copy both of TWL and AGB firmware, respectively). None of this uses emulation; it's all done natively, right on the copper (i.e., no HOME Menu while in AGB_FIRM), as all three consoles are ARM-based. GBA games were planned for release on 3DS and they ran flawlessly, but when the console price dropped before they were released, they were instead released only to early (higher-priced) adopters (so-called "Nintendo Ambassadors") for free. Modders later decrypted the rom packets to inject more-or-less the entire GBA library onto 3DS. Rom injection is also possible for 3DS Virtual Console games that use emulation (GB, GBC, SGG), as well as Virtual Console on Wii U (similarly, Wii and GameCube games run natively on GC-based Wii U).
Puts the finger to hide the numbers, takes the paper away and it's clearly visible for a few frames... hhaha you might want to use RUclips's blurring tools :P
Actually as a side note the first chip NVidia proposed for the switch was a little bit morepowerful but nintendo went for the cheaper option.

7:37 what name of this music is not pop up on video
Honestly the 3DS should have just used Qualcomm at that point
1:07 Hehe its that funny dancing meme song
interesting video but please invest in a new mic if possible
Thank god for people like you
Wow that was great! You know your stuff!
I bet making such fundamental changes to product specifications that far into the development process must be quite hard on the developers and engineers. I wonder how much coffee they drank getting the 3DS to store shelves?
okay i knew the wii was already a souped up gamecube but that's wild :o
Please explain 0:57
holy shit, my local games store had one of these years ago but i never knew what it was. i've been trying to find this dev kit for years.
I LOVE PERSONA 3 SOUNDTRACK
Extremely interesting. I love the history of embedded cpu/much/gpu stuff
This is incredibly thorough! Sub’d

I loved the part where he showed that he owns an Nvidia 3DS prototype
Your telling me the modding community might make my gamecube into a Wii

great video 🎉
got to start somewhere.
Your video was really interesting few years ago I found out a way to get NDEV, RVT-H, RVT-R. The history behind all this prototype is nice to see for the public.
Funny how the one time Nintendo actually went through with NVIDIA and used their Tegra chip, it actually has a big unpatchable vulnerability that costed them the switch's security :p
Very interesting documentary!
What is the first track, it sounds like it comes from a bootleg Persona game but I've heard it a lot lately
The music's sourced at the top right corner of the video, it's a remix of P3's Joy BGM from Persona Q2 (3DS)
@@chiptunesoprano ruclips.net/video/Src3czHw0sg/видео.html god this sounds so much better
Well! I did see GameCube Games work within the Wii!
I wouldn’t call the Tegra X1 chip…. It was on tablets years before the switch landed
OOOO
PERSONA
the reason is simple, nintendo realized a long time ago that they had absolutely nothing to offer because all the good developers were making exclusives with sony or microsoft, or spreading across all available platforms. so they decided "fuck it, every console is now a gimmick to catch idiots". and thats how we got to the "switch"- literally just a low powered shit tier android tablet that was like 3 years outdated in power when it was released, and is virtually unplayable on large screen TV's due to the sub-720p resolution the games run in.
Info about your engineering sample is hard to find. Are there any big differences between retail and this prototype?
There's an SDK document which outlines the differences (just a few bugfixes) between it and final. We tested its behavior a bit and observed intermittent crashes in Prime.
When people say the wii is just a overclocked gamecube there not lieing
