was that a Peak Design attachment for a camera strap? I have the exact same ones on my camera. I have them on both sides of my camera if i want to war it over the shoulder or around the neck, especially if i'm using a tripod.
same here, i was waiting options, apps, conn and pros of each, but the only thing i got was tony acting as a salesman or "see all this stuff i have" video
Mike S I think just showing us an image of the cable doesn't qualify this video as a "how to tether video" . I can show you a picture of some guys playing soccer and do a close up on the ball and that doesn't qualify as a how to video
You are right that he didn't explicitly go through that process... but he told you what software he uses... usually all you do is plug the camera in and open the software and bam.... thats all their is to it.
Can you suggest a good and safe software to download for a Nikon CoolPix p530? I'm trying to use my laptop as an external moniter for the camera. I had bought an HDMI cord to connect to the laptop but the laptop isn't registering the camera. :/
+hargraveben23 Just plug a USB cable from yoru camera to your computer, assuming your camera supports it. Our Lightroom book shows you exactly how to tether in Lightroom (sdp.io/store).
Tony. Would it be good idea to update this video as new wifi cards have improved a great deal, and tethering with a cable can be a pain in the neck .It is very easy to trip over the tether cable and pull out your connection that might cost a great deal to repair your equipment. I would really like someone to make a video showing new ways to connect the camera to a laptop without using the cable method. Without using the hot shoe as my godox trigger sits on this to control the studio lights
I am just getting started learning to Tether my camera to a laptop. I have a 5Ds as well and found your video very helpful. I purchased the manfrotto 183 stand but was unable to stabilize it using a light stand . I was able to use it with my tripod. I use a tripod for my camera work so it cannot be dedicated to the 183. Is there an extra add on that I can buy to make the light stand more stable?
I never thought of doing a cart like that with a small form factor computer and a good, yet "small" monitor (funny how 24" monitor used to be considered big). Looks like when I go visit the inlaws for Christmas, I need to go help my sister in law by cleaning up her hubby's testing office for some supplies to build a new small system. I love having a brother in law that's a hardware tester :-) One question regarding Capture One. Do you find any differences in editing your raw files on it vs Lightroom?
Tony is there any difference between using the orange ?Tethertools 5m cable you show and using the 1m cable that came with my D810 with regular a USB to USB extension cable?
Have you done anything with EyeFi cards or the like for this? I'm shooting with a Fuji X-E2 and as I recall some of the cable tethering options for those aren't that great (Yes, I know, I need to get the X-T2, I've watched your vid and have been drooling over that body since it released. No bad jokes intended.) I'm also more interested in wireless options because I tend to move around a lot rather than doing fixed-camera shots.
WOW you are smart.. how do you learn and remember so much ? man i wished i knew all that. i have watched a lot of your videos because i really got interested in buying a full frame camera but the more i watch you the more i realize how much there is involved. you do a great job
sometimes i need to go on sight to shoot panoramic shot in rotational method, max of 180. Does the side bar help with rotation smoothly. In addition, is there a rather than tether and see the shot before being taken use the computer as a view finder? Video was awesome, much appreciated.
Walid Nasaa I realize your post is two years old but maybe this will help someone else. When mounted on a geared center post tripod like Tony's the bar will not rotate, it is fixed. If your center post rotates then you could rotate the whole assembly but I doubt it would be smooth. In addition because you have now increased the radius of the rotation circle any variation off of level of the tripod will cause a change in elevation of the panned image. You are better off having the camera mounted in the center of the tripod.
+Tony & Chelsea Northrup, was that a Peak Design attachment for a camera strap? I have the exact same ones on my camera. I have them on both sides of my camera if i want to war it over the shoulder or around the neck, especially if i'm using a tripod.
MrKravmagadude Light meters really aren't that precise. Technically, I could calculate the dynamic range of whichever camera I'm using and measure the highlights and shadows with a meter to make sure I'm effectively using the entire dynamic range... and that would be fine, until the model leans forward an inch and gets closer to the light, and then I'd have to re-measure. Or move a light. Or put a diffuser on the light. Or add a bit of fill. Or move in a different model with a different skin tone. All these would require re-measuring. Meters also don't account for variations in the lens T-Stop (which can change even with a single lens while zooming) or the camera's actual ISO, which nowadays is often 2/3 of a stop off from traditional film ISO. Anyway, it's always more precise to look at the camera's output. I will use a meter for shooting film, but for digital, it's just not effecient.
Hello Tony. How are you? I'm learning a lot from you on how to better take pictures when travelling with my family on a vacation with my D5600 Nikon. I hope you don't mind, may I ask if the tethering application in Lightroom Classic 9.2.1 which came with my Adobe Creative Cloud subscription is compatible now with Catalina 10.15.4? Last Nov 2019 I upgrade the OS of my laptop from Mojave 10.14.6 to Catalina 10.15.4 and tethering didn’t work. I had to pay Apple service USD50 to bring back the OS Mojave 10.14.6. thank you.
Hey all at Northrup Photo Industries. Agree 100% about 802.11ac but wonder if you could mention something on how you sync. In my windows days I loved synctoy but maybe there is something better now. Since I just have loop scripts running rsync.
Amazing...it was very helpfull for me...just bcoz i was looking for too many thing...nd i got it frm ur video...knwlege nd help nd guidence....nd sir u guide very well....nd its very beneficial for beginer as well professional too...
Hi, Tony! @6:16, you mentioned that you sychronize your camera to your computer , so that it can go to your computer in your work space or editing space. I have 2 questions. Can you tell me or give a video link, that I can watch, so that I can do the same? Will the synching allow me to transfer video footage? I'm asking, because, my recording studio is upstairs and my editing space is downstairs. I'm tired of taking my camera, up and downstairs, to import media. I'm afraid that I may fall and break my camera or something. It's a waste time and I hate unplugging and replugging my camera, back and forth, to 2 different computers. I'm frustrated! Please, answer, me. Thank you!
Would you take a moment to share what adaptor you use for Canon lenses on your Sony A7rII? When the Sony rep demoed the camera in LA at Samys he had a $109. Fotodiox adapter and the lens focused almost instantly (or at least we heard a beep, we never saw the pictures up on the screen.) We've heard so much blah-blah it'd be great to know what you and Justin have found as the best. Thanks for what you do.
Just wondering are sure it the 4790k and not the 4790 non k because amazon page you showed, shows the non k version and that version is a bit slower at 3.6 instead of 4ghz? also Intel just released the 6700k so that is now the best cpu for single core performance.
Hi Tony, Wanted to ask, if I can shoot with my Nikon D810 camera tethered to my iPhone 7 Plus with a USB 3.0 Cable? Tether Shooting and transferring big NEF files ~40-45MB per photo.
I have a question @Tony & Chelsea Northup. I’m aware that one can remotely view photos on iPad or a smartphone before it’s taken; but is it possible to do this with videos? I’m using a canon EOS 4000D, and its doesn’t show up my iPad 6th gen when I use my lightning to USB adapter-only I use my USB drive/ SD card adapter does it show up. Any advice would be appreciated
Tony I was hoping you had an answer for this tethering challenge. I have a 2016 MacBook Pro (upgraded), capture one 11 & Sony A7r III that I’ve been tethering with with no issues for years. Until three days ago. I cannot shoot tethered with my laptop unplugged any longer or I get an alert that says “ USB accessories disabled. Using too much power”. Like I said this has never happened before.I’m getting these tiny little glitches after updating to Catalina. So, I upgraded capture one 11 to capture one 20 thinking it might be a application issue (nope). The next step is I’ve been shooting with the same tethertools cord for three years so I ordered a new cord to see if maybe that’s it. That will get here on Wednesday. Do you have any idea what this could be?
Love your videos! An absolute wealth of information. Thank you so very much for all your help. Im in the process of building my home base studio right now. I do need to find out what type of grey backdrop do I need. If you have a video you can suggest please do. Thanks again. Oh and I love your Richard Gear smile when your laughing. cute haha
Hey Tony .. How you're sync the data between PC's ? What kind of software or scripts. I's assuming that's fully automated process, Please explain if you can. Thanks
Tony Northrup The link for your computer brought me to a computer with a yellow accent, but yours has a purple accent. For some reason, the purple accented version with i7 is much more money and has different specs. Do you have a link to the purple accented one? Thanks!
Hi Tony & Chelsea. I'd like to know which LAV Microphone you're using and what's it recording to. I really like the quality of the sound. Thank you btw, this video was helpful.
Thanks for the video, however its from 2015, so I was wondering if you still feel that Capture One is the fastest way to go when tethering to your computer?
Nice set up Tony, I've been shooting tethered in studio with my laptop. It's much better being able to check focus, exposure etc on a larger screen. I'm getting a shot to image shown time of around 3 seconds, (D750, Cap one, i3 with SSD) what kind of times are you getting with this set up? Also for network, have you looked into power line plugs? I use these for my gaming PC etc and they are rock solid and fast when compared to wifi for myself. :)
ZG0002 I think I'm at about 3 seconds, too... with LR it was more like 8-15 seconds. Re: powerline, I used two generations of powerline networking, but actual performance depends on your home's wiring, and for me, 802.11ac was MUCH faster and more reliable.
Yeah LR is much slower (I wonder why that is?) I do the same as yourself and transfer the raw files into LR after the shoot. Good to know my speeds are up there, but also slightly disappointed that I'm unlikely to see a speed boost with a upgrade. That's a shame about the power line networking. Keep up the brilliant work, learning so much from you two :)
Tony, for an older and smaller Megapixel camera, would LR be sufficient? I am running a Nikon D700, which is 12.1mpx... the file sizes are usually about 15-17MB each... I'm very certain the D700 doesn't have USB 3.0 :)
Tony, have a 5dmk1. Any info on being able to shoot tethered untill I can afford a ii or iii. The mobi wifi messes up the files when transmitting the Jpeg. Not sure if pro version will work better, ie, transmit RAW or Jpegs.
Mikael Schulin Chapter 5 in Stunning Digital Photography has a video on this topic. Most people (but not all people) shouldn't worry about it--in my experience it's almost always a mis-diagnosis.
Great Video. Definitely deserves a subscribe. Really Like Your setup. few questions: what camera did u use to shoot this video and what material is the black backdrop?
Thanks for the video - I'm curious about the dual Capture One and Lightroom workflow - the processing algorithms are (in my experience) quite different between the two programs (I use C1 on location, but LR to manage everything at home). Do you export TIFFs from C1 to lock in the 'look' you have on your screen as you shoot, or are you just copying over the unedited CR2 files and starting from scratch in LR?
Hi tony I've been wanting to know how to tether to my computer and was wondering if all sony cameras can be tethered the same way as your canon ? Thanks Greg
Good work, Tony. I noticed you shot 30 fps video on this one. What camera did you use? The detail is impressive. Did you shoot 4k and then size it down to 2k? What is your favorite video camera to film these with now?
Thanks for sharing your tethering gears Tony :) Can you throw some light on how you transfer wirelessly from the studio computer (alienware) to your power horse desktop in downstairs.Any software in particular? Does this update every picture you take to the other desktop ? . Also is there any wireless gear to add to the camera to transfer files wirelessly instead of a USB cable ? , which could help both camera and computer to be more mobile in the studio.
11:10 I have the same problem here but use powerline ethernet adaptors. They just plug into the wall at any points in the house and use your power cables to create a wired network connection. It's the only thing that gives me 100% up time as WiFi occasionally drops out in my loft.
Hi Tony, my laptop has both HDMI and USB ports. I tried using the HDMI port using my Sony a5000 but my computer doesn't recognize it. Also do I need a separate windows app so that my laptop can read my camera? Was was told to check wether my HDMI port in my laptop is IN or OUT?
+Richie Quinsayas The HDMI is usually used for outputting video. You need an image processor that supports tethering. Capture One is industry leading, not only for tethering but also as RAW converter.
Hi guys! love your relaxed and well worked trough videos. I'm interested in a good wireless tether option, is Camfi Pro Plus or Camranger a good option. Cant find any good reviews online. Keep up the good work!
Tony, great video as usual. Regarding tethering, would the speed at which LR uploads pics be enhanced by (i) more RAM and (ii) a faster processor? Do you have any experience with the Nikon software Camera Control Pro 2 and if so how does it compare to the one you're using? (I have a D810 and MacBook Pro).
+calevy100 Above 8GB of RAM you probably won't see much performance improvement. A faster processer (meaning, higher GHz, not necessarily more cores) will always help. We've only used the Nikon software a couple of times.
Great video, good information on tethering. I have the 5ds and was wondering about your experience with that weird Canon USB3 cable strain relief. Do you use it? Do you prefer a different method or does it not seem to need it. Was worrying that not using it would crack the USB3 connector off of the circuit card inside the camera. Thanks for any thoughts you might have on this. Love your channel!
+ScotTheGr8 I put it on one time, but I forgot to put it on when I recorded this video. I never thought about it protected the circuit board, I just figured it was there to keep the cable from popping off accidentally... I'll have to make a point of using it in the future.
Tony, I have been following your amazing video pretty closely, I greatly learn from these videos and thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge pretty liberally. My question is tethering is all great when indoors, what would you recommend for outdoors when shooting in different environments, climate conditions , at least I am unable to judge the clarity of the image pretty accurately irrespective how much I zoom, that too with my reading glasses on the Camera LCD let alone the view finder. How can tethering work in outdoors ?
If you can't run an ethernet cable but would like to have a wired connection (maybe for consistency in bandwidth), why don't you use power-lines adapters?
I recently attended a seminar on tethering sponsored by Tether Tools. They compared Lightroom with the On1 Photo RAW 2018.5 software. The On1 beat the pants off Lightroom in speed. One thing that increased the speed of Lightroom was adding a Tether Tools booster inline between the camera and the computer. However, Lightroom still lagged far behind On1 in speed....
RainbowClash123 No, the live show monitor is a 1080p touchscreen. The laptop is an older XP13 that's no longer sold, but here's the latest version: sdp.io/xps13. The mouse wasn't sold with the computer.
Damn - I wish I had seen this video a couple of months ago. I had an issue tethering my nikon D610 to my LR5 at that time. Any idea what sw would be better option?
This is quite an old video. But having just found it, I am AMAZED at the number of people who don't know how to plug in the two ends of a cable. And get this, you troubled folks, not every camera has the same kind of USB port on it. And not all computers have the same kind of USB ports on them. (Which we would be evident if you even listened to what Tony says.) SO there is no way Tony could tell you "what kind of cable you need", except that, it needs to link two USB ports. So it's a USB cable, Doh!! If someone doesn't figure out they need to find a USB cable that connects THEIR computer to THEIR camera, I think they are going to get little help out of this video. And those complaints that he's not providing any information or that insulting "just a salesman not a photographer" .. .these are just so blind lame and ignorant. The guy is easily confirmed to be a highly competent photographer. And he's giving a lot of real world information about what he finds works best, and what doesn't, including what kinds of gear is best for these purposes (e.g. not just a tripod by a seriously heavy one; not just a monitor but a hgih-resolution monitor, not just a mouse but a mouse with a wheel, etc.) and showing what the advantages of tethering are. (I was hoping to find a video on wi-fi tethering. But that's a different thing.)
any idea how to connect your dslr to an ipad to be its camera instead of the one built in, so like whichever app u use like instagram from example it opens up your dslr to take pictures on ipad
as a cheap laptop stand, you could also use conductor stand. The ones that musicians friend sells go fully horizontal, and they are sturdy. Priced under twenty bucks shipped.
It says "Tether", I know it requires a mini USB into the camera and a normal USB into the laptop. What software do I need? I would of thought that's what was going to be addressed here. The software issue is all I need to be briefed on.

so how do u tether???

Could you make a video on how to tether a camera?
I was waiting for the teather which usb cord exactly and how do you plug things in
yes cool a how to video that shows everything except how to tether, excellent
+Bruce Nguyen Um... you missed the cable that runs from the camera to that PC :)
+Bruce Nguyen I was thinking just the same. At least we got the sales pitch for a dozen or so related products.
same here, i was waiting options, apps, conn and pros of each, but the only thing i got was tony acting as a salesman or "see all this stuff i have" video

Hey Tony .. How you're sync the data between PC's ? What kind of software or scripts. I's assuming that's fully automated process, Please explain if you can. Thanks
tony if I get a 4k monitor to see more detail does that mean I have to get a better graphics card for my desktop if so what graphics card would I need
Tony Northrup The link for your computer brought me to a computer with a yellow accent, but yours has a purple accent. For some reason, the purple accented version with i7 is much more money and has different specs. Do you have a link to the purple accented one? Thanks!
Hi, maybe could be a good idea to upgrade these tether video with A7Riii C1 & MS Surface pro ?
This has to be one of the best organized and easy-to-understand videos I have ever watched! Very useful and will definitely subscribe. Thanks a lot!
Hi Tony & Chelsea. I'd like to know which LAV Microphone you're using and what's it recording to. I really like the quality of the sound. Thank you btw, this video was helpful.
Thank uuu very much ur videos are one of the best tutorials on the web cause its so detailed and simple, thats why I'm willing to buy ur books
Hey, great video! What cable are you using?
Tony, for an older and smaller Megapixel camera, would LR be sufficient? I am running a Nikon D700, which is 12.1mpx... the file sizes are usually about 15-17MB each...
I'm very certain the D700 doesn't have USB 3.0 :)
Todd Davis I don't know, give it a shot! Most of the time is spent waiting for Lightroom to render a preview.
Tony, have a 5dmk1. Any info on being able to shoot tethered untill I can afford a ii or iii. The mobi wifi messes up the files when transmitting the Jpeg. Not sure if pro version will work better, ie, transmit RAW or Jpegs.
Which tripod is he using (with the crank that lets it go up and down smoothly)?
How long is the tether cord? The one that came with my camera is too short. What lenght do you recommend?
Nice video as always. Suggestion: Please make a video about micro adjustment for auto focussing. This drives me nuts..!
Mikael Schulin Chapter 5 in Stunning Digital Photography has a video on this topic. Most people (but not all people) shouldn't worry about it--in my experience it's almost always a mis-diagnosis.
Thank you Mr Northrup! I ought to buy your book since I have seen so many great videos of yours for free.
What are the tethered shooting options with a Nikon D750. I couldn't find any. Lightroom and Capture One still don't have support for it.
Great Video. Definitely deserves a subscribe. Really Like Your setup. few questions: what camera did u use to shoot this video and what material is the black backdrop?
How accurate is the screen shot to your left in comparison to the shot your taking and that you end up with on the computer to edit with?
Thanks for the video - I'm curious about the dual Capture One and Lightroom workflow - the processing algorithms are (in my experience) quite different between the two programs (I use C1 on location, but LR to manage everything at home).
Do you export TIFFs from C1 to lock in the 'look' you have on your screen as you shoot, or are you just copying over the unedited CR2 files and starting from scratch in LR?
Hi tony I've been wanting to know how to tether to my computer and was wondering if all sony cameras can be tethered the same way as your canon ? Thanks Greg
+Greg Bird I don't know if "all" Sony cameras can be tethered but they're generally supported by Lightroom and Capture One.
Hello Tony, I'm wondering do you calibrate the lenses that you put on the 5dsr? I seen how extremely sharp the picture look! Love you guys!
I’ve said this on pretty much every social medium, you guys are perfect and awesome in every way. Thank you for everything.
Also, would an HDMI to Thunderbolt cable enhance photo upload speed or is this for video uploads only?
+calevy100 Yeah, HDMI is just for video out, you have to use USB for stills.
I was hoping to find out what cable to use to tether. Otherwise some nice ideas for a studio set up.
Hi guys! love your relaxed and well worked trough videos. I'm interested in a good wireless tether option, is Camfi Pro Plus or Camranger a good option. Cant find any good reviews online. Keep up the good work!
What is the red and gray thing attached where a camera strap would go?
I'm use d5300. Confused between sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 Dc macro os HSM or Tamron SP AF 17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di llVC LD.
PLEASE HELP
Hi, do you have any experience with "Digicamcontrol" for live view tethered shooting ?
title should have been : "Look at all my cool expensive stuff and here's a link"

Tony - have you noticed an improvement in Lightroom's software / performance since this video was made?
+TheUberSchattenjager No, it's still torturous.
Tony, can you please tell me what lights controller is that on the camera ?
Can we tether this video back to tethering your camera/computer...
What software were you using in our video to tether? Lrm? I couldn't tell when I was looking at your monitor in the video.
+Gerald Barnes Capture One--it's vastly faster for tethering than LR.
Is that 4k monitor the same one that you use in the live show? What XPS laptop is that? Did you buy the mouse seperately or in the kit?
RainbowClash123 No, the live show monitor is a 1080p touchscreen. The laptop is an older XP13 that's no longer sold, but here's the latest version: sdp.io/xps13. The mouse wasn't sold with the computer.
Tony Northrup Thanks!
Damn - I wish I had seen this video a couple of months ago. I had an issue tethering my nikon D610 to my LR5 at that time.
Any idea what sw would be better option?
What Tony uses, Capture One Pro.
So how does one tether the 5D sr to the computer? And maybe..also do this for Mac...
Just received all of your books and cards trying to fugue out how to load them on my new MacBook Pro wish me luck thanks for all y’all do
Hi,
i have a d850 running firmware 1.20 and lightroom is unable to detect it for tethering....any advice?
any idea how to connect your dslr to an ipad to be its camera instead of the one built in, so like whichever app u use like instagram from example it opens up your dslr to take pictures on ipad
Sorry, that doesn't exist.
Can the A7rII tether? I know it is USB2. I have lightroom, looks interesting to try.
FilmFactry Yeah all the a7 series can, but it is slow. Especially with LightRoom
I believe so. And it comes with a Capture One Express for Sony license, so you really should try it out.
what is your light stuff? and how does it works ?
as a cheap laptop stand, you could also use conductor stand. The ones that musicians friend sells go fully horizontal, and they are sturdy. Priced under twenty bucks shipped.
Can someone tell me what software he's using for the camera to pc live view? Thank you.
Have you tried the program or app Qdslrdashboard ?
It says "Tether", I know it requires a mini USB into the camera and a normal USB into the laptop. What software do I need? I would of thought that's what was going to be addressed here. The software issue is all I need to be briefed on.
do you know if the A7Rii can be tethered this way?
Can I bypass an SD card from a Lumix G7 when filming in 4K and tether straight to a computer?
What synchronization software are you using?
