I have viewed a lot of tutorials on many sites and I really like and understand Northup Photography better than any I have seen. Clear, down-to-earth instructions and right speed and tone to his voice. Thank you for this!
Tony, I am already familiar with most of these concepts but it's always nice to see someone who makes a living doing this, and how they think and what they do. I have to say, there are many teachers out there and you are one of the best. You have a great way or explaining everything in plain English and using real world situations. Well done sir.
Yes, though i forgot to mention that it takes only two children in a photo to make it mathematically impossible to get a single frame with everyone smiling. :)
Best tutorial you've ever done! Very simple and your were not showing off $5000.00 worth of equipment most people can;t afford. This video showed off you true teaching skills.
Beautiful. It took me 12 years and hundreds of thousands of frames to learn 80% of what this one video covers. And I still had the other 20% to learn! Thanks very much. And I always overshoot large groups. What I always tell them is, "The more I take, the better you look." That usually stamps out any growing impatience. ;)
You and Chelsea make some of the absolute best photography tutorials I have ever seen. This one was particularly informative and useful. The more I work at getting comfortable with my basics, the more I like to experiment and learn. Keep up the good work.
Excellent advice, thank you. I never cease to be amazed at how little depth of field is available with telephoto lenses, even at medium apertures... your examples of out-of-focus group shots are a very timely reminder for me, as I have a couple of group portrait shoots coming up.
Thanks Tony. I just volunteered to do the annual Christmas photo for friends. I am a bird photographer so I know how to do that. Your great tips on small groups and children gives me a bit more confidence. Thanks so much.
I bought the ebook over a year ago and I still reference it often. The videos are a great bonus. I HIGHLY recommend it. Tony is also very accessible. :) He's awesome!!!
OMG. I've used photoshop for years and never realized I could brush in an equal sized face like that! Always thought I'd have to cut and paste the entire head! This was AMAZING!
For individual portraits you really need a portrait lens, like the 85 f/1.8 or a 70-200 f/2.8. For group shots, you can just use your kit lens. Refer to Chapter 6 in Stunning Digital Photography (link in the description) for more info.
Hey, Tony. Thanks for your very informative tips. I've been shooting for about 30 years, and finally decided to become a professional. Most of my work has been performing artists, mostly blues acts. I've learned how to capture the emotions as they flow from the performers. Portraits is something new for me; hence my need for education. Just bought your book, haven't studied it yet. You are a natural teacher. Thank you!
I’m obsessed with your videos! I love how you explain and give examples. I have learned so much and I’m going to start applying some of your ideas soon. After a lot of research I ended up buying the Canon 70D so I can take casual pictures and also take that nice SLR video. I’m going to try and get the Tamron 24 -70 in the near future. Who knows maybe after a while I can do some freelance work just for fun. I just want to say thank you Tony. You are the best my friend! Chelsea is awesome too.
Sergio Luviano Thanks! But don't but the 24-70, buy this instead: ruclips.net/video/ojXW9F1CnfA/видео.html and watch this for more info: ruclips.net/video/YDbUIfB5YUc/видео.html
I love the Yongnuo flashes. The triggers are good for their price point, and they're what I recommend for basic triggers. I use the PocketWizards, which support eTTL but are far more expensive.
Hi Tony and Chelsea! Newbie fan and Photographer here! I think I've watched almost every single video from you and I'm in love with them all. So much knowledge and info, packed into each one. Thank you so much for sharing it all so freely! I have learned more in the 3 days I've spent watching your videos than the previous weeks spent watching videos from other photographers. I will be adding your book to my Christmas wishlist, as well as the 50mm 2.8 I've had my eye on (I do mostly portrait photography). :) Thanks again! I can't wait to see what you will post next!
Hi there just got a Canon for fathers day. I was puzzled on how to use it, till I watched your tutorial. Thank you for explaining it in every day language. Now I have a basic understanding. thanks again.
I have my first family shoot (my brothers friends family) to do this coming May or June at the beach, consisting of the parents + 2 kids. Your advice will be taken into account. Thanks for a wonderful and insightful tutorial.
I'm getting ready to do a series of pro bono photos for people who can't afford a /holiday picture. Since I'm mostly a landscape person, I needed a good overview of shooting groups indoors -- this was most helpful; thanks.
That's the forth corner on the exposure square (Chapter 4 in Stunning Digital Photography, link in the description): Light. For the record, upping the ISO will evenly increase the brightness of both the foreground and the background. If your foreground is too dark, you can add light, in the form of flash or by just opening the curtain. Check Chapters 3, 4, and 6 for more information.
THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH. I am always messing up group shots to the point where I am afraid to do them. Lots of people will comment on group photo settings with people in different rows but never with people in the same plane. I need to boost my f-stop setting higher than what I am using. Thanks for the videos
Yeah, getting your subjects to relax is one of the most challenging parts of portrait photography. I can't really cover it in a RUclips comment, but I do cover it in Chapter 6 of Stunning Digital Photography (link in the description).
Tony, I enjoy all your videos. You are clear and concise in your information. I'm just about to try my first shoot outdoors with 4 boys, 2-10 yrs old. You told me almost everything I need to know. There were some other videos on posing families that I think will help posing the boys in something other than rows. Also, I have scouted the local park and there are some benches, tables and of course the ground where we can possibly change the look and the background for more variety. Thanks for the info.
Tony, my friend, this was a really helpful video! I have been photographing people professionally for about 12 years now and I actually got several helpful tips from this. Thanks and keep on keeping on. God bless from down in Brazil!
bunch of fantastic tips - especially like the one with the 8x10 framing relative to camera sensor size.. its the little things. thanks! great as always..
Check Chapter 6 in Stunning Digital Photography (links in the description). There's sections covering both group photos and self-portraits. Also check Chapter 5 for help troubleshooting the blurriness--it could be a couple of different problems.
Tony, I believe the information you are giving for camera settings are mainly for full frame cameras. These settings for a crop sensor would be difficult, that is if you are not using external light sources. Great advise, thanks for all the videos
Ideally you'd focus about 1/3 of the way through the frame. Read Chapters 4 and 6 of Stunning Digital Photography (links in the description) or watch my Beginner DVD series (available at the 'worldwide' link in the description) for everything you need to know about autofocus, camera settings, and depth-of-field.
Learned much from this video. Very impressed with the cloning technic to eliminate eyes being closed by replacing the heads with the heads from previous or other shots. Nice work Tony!
Tony, you are so informative in your videos. I've learned much from them and I purchased your book so I'm looking forward to reading and applying the tips there in. Thanks.
Hi, Evan. If you buy my book (link in the description) it comes with access to all my videos (about 3.5 hours now), as well as other benefits, like access to a private Facebook support page that allows you to access the videos without reading the book, if you so choose :).
Very professional and informative. Thanks Tony. Tony, is Lr enough to process a good quality wedding photos? or do we need to export it to Ps to enhance more using the plug-ins. Thank you very much!
Excellent tips, thank you! I was actually taking notes as I watched! :) Finally someone touching on all the aspects, including settings, plus real hands-on tips on how to set up groups. Great video, thanks, still appreciated in 2018 :)
Excellent tutorial! I learned a lot! I can't wait to apply all that he has taught me! Tony is turning me more into a pro! I'm definitely going to purchase his book "How to Create Stunning Digital Photography!
Very good info! Bouncing the flash works really well for me. However, what can you do in a situation where you are indoors with high ceilings and no studio lights, but would still like a little fill light?
I'm going tomorrow to take a picture of a family that hired me. This is my first time to "work" for someone.... and also my first time shooting a family together. Yikes! I've done single portraits, many of them too. Thanks for the video! Hopefully this will help me.
Please, please tell me how you shot on that lit background! It’s exactly what I am tryin to do! How far are subjects from the background? How did you light the subjects?
Thank you so much for this great video. It's just what I needed.I'm a budding photographer and I have my first family photo shoot scheduled soon and needed some tips. There will be 24 people in these photos! I'm wondering if there is a particular wide angle lens that you would suggest I use. I shoot with Nikon. Thank you so much. Love your videos.
hi Tony, i just watched the video and for 12 mins. ive learned a lot. i wonder if you have a complete set of video tutorial that u sell that i could use to enhance more of that skills. Thank you so much
Hello, Thanks for your video. I am preparing to take photos of our newborn soon. And want to get into taking newborn photography etc. What setup do you recommend to add light to the room? I have some natural light but feel need some extra. Softbox? Or a different setup
Hi Tony, today i m gonna take our family picture. Your books n videos were really helpful fr me. I hope I can do it. Well m no professional but ll try what I learnt frm u...thanks.
What would you recommend for Lens when having a tighter space - I am doing portraits at a Christmas Dinner, so mostly couples, but the space will be limited and tight. I will have background and flashes, etc. but a 70-200 won't be feasible.. I'm using a 70D, and have a a EF-S 50, EF-S 18-135, EF-S 55-250. Thanks from a newbie!
Tony.....i admire d way u covered so many aspects in pretty systematic order...!!! As an amateur n beginner.... i m sure i can try n get better results with my Nikon D5100.... Thanks...!!
Hello, Great Video! (sorry for my english, from brazil) What is the correct aperture (f) for group photos (indoor). How to do with the focal points so that everyone is focused? Thanks!
Hi sir. Its a very nice tutorial! I am asked to shoot for an event this month and it will be my first time. I just have a canon 600d and a kit lens hope i can still get nice shots because the venue is not well lit
Great video, thanks! I have one question: for outside photo shoots, why did you say that it is best to have the sun in the back of the group? Wouldn't that create a silhouette around the group? Thanks for all your videos!
You'll won't regret to buy! I recommend all books including buying guide, even if you are not planning to buy somethingv soon, there's a lot of useful information related to photography in general.
Question: I loved the video and purchased the ebook for kindle. Is there a way to get a version (digital version) with better quality pictures? The picture quality in the version I have is very low resolution and off putting while viewing on my iPad. It would be a much better experience with higher resolution photos.
Great video but do you have the book maybe for mirrorless cameras? or would the DSLR book work the same? Because I have a sony A5100, and I would like to improve my skills
Just starting a small passport photo and supplimental portrait biz on the weekends, thanks for the tip about the 8x10s I didnt know about the cropping,One thing I use a 24-70L on a 1d Mark2n,I use a 2 light set up one monolight in front and a light for the back drop,my camera settings are f5.6 @ 125th iso 100,now my work space is about 9x9 so using 24-32mm on the lens would this distort the pics? or will the crop factor 1.3 crop take this into consideration?
really helpful since i just got some prime lens i did not get why some ppl where out of focus , i needed to go higher fstops , know iwill go practice , thank you again keep up the good work .
In the video, you talk about photographing people in the shade outdoors and using fill flash. Would that be just the normal default strength flash, or would you have to dial the flash down a bit? Thanks!
Thank you for saying chest/ shoulders up 4:36 and fill frame with faces. I was always taught "make sure you get our feet" and the photos are just not good. It is hard to get away from emphasis on outfits.
So would you pick one point autofocus (focus on the middle/closest person) and then raise to f16? I have a group picture to take this weekend and I’m nervous! First big group!
I was just asked to shoot photos my daughter-in-law's family on Christmas Day! I'n not a professional portrait photographer so no pressure there! I do have a Sony A7III with Sony GM 50mm 1.2, Zeiss Batis 85mm 1.8 and a Sony GM 24mm. For lighting I only have a Godox TT658s & X1T-S trigger. I'm guessing based on the video the 85mm and maybe the 50mm depending on the room I have are my options. In the past I've tended to use the flash in manual and adjust just enough to fill. Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance!
Thank you Tony! I'm getting my final pieces of my studio equipment this week. I'm ready to practice. I will be volunteering my time taking studio photos of everyone and their families in a conference next year. It will be free to all attendees. I'm giving them the digital on a flash drive. I'm doing this just to give back what God has given me. If I purchase your book (hard copy) on Amazon, how do I get access to your videos?
I love all your Videos. I have learn so much from watching your channel. I will have a family portrait shoot maybe next month. i do mainly product photography but i want to get into portraits. i have a nikon 5300 and i have a prime 50mm. and i have a set of three lights(soft box) they are not flash and its constant light lights. i saw this video and i think i can do it. i really want to break into photographing people. thanks tony for all your videos.
Tony, thank you for sharing the great tips. I always found your tutorials are extremely usefully for some new types of photography shoots that I like to try. Love your works!! :)
Hi, Juan. Unfortunately there's no quick answer, because it depends on your distance to the subject, your lens, your sensor size, and your light. Read Chapters 4 and 6 of Stunning Digital Photography (links in the description) and watch the videos in those chapters, and you'll understand exactly how to set your aperture.

This is one of the very best tutorials I have seen very easy to follow and full of simple yet important tips. Great job as always Tony.
I have watched upwards of 20 to 30 videos this week about photography, this is by far the best! Thank You! Please continue to make them!
By far, this is best video on this subject on the internet. Very thorough and easy to follow for someone new to photography like me. Well done.
I bought the ebook over a year ago and I still reference it often. The videos are a great bonus. I HIGHLY recommend it. Tony is also very accessible. :) He's awesome!!!

Thank you TONY, I really learn so much with your videos. God bless your heart and family.

You explained in 1 video what I've been looking for in the past 6 I have viewed! Very professional...THANK YOU!
great information, never thought of using anything smaller than f8 for group shots THANKS!
Very professional and informative. Thanks Tony.
Tony, is Lr enough to process a good quality wedding photos? or do we need to export it to Ps to enhance more using the plug-ins. Thank you very much!
Going to shoot my sister's family portraits and this was very helpful, thanks Tony!
I've never learned so much from a 12 min. video ever! Thanks!
Excellent tips, thank you! I was actually taking notes as I watched! :) Finally someone touching on all the aspects, including settings, plus real hands-on tips on how to set up groups. Great video, thanks, still appreciated in 2018 :)

GREAT advice/techniques, esp. for these times when we have to retool our photo businesses!

Excellent video. Clear advice delivered in a really logical way. Another great video, Tony.
hi Tony, i just watched the video and for 12 mins. ive learned a lot. i wonder if you have a complete set of video tutorial that u sell that i could use to enhance more of that skills.

Thanks for trying to make us better fotographers.
Hi Tony, thanks for the tips it has help me out immensely as I normally only photograph wildlife or landscape.

Hello, Great Video!
(sorry for my english, from brazil)
What is the correct aperture (f) for group photos (indoor). How to do with the focal points so that everyone is focused?
Thanks!
Hi sir. Its a very nice tutorial! I am asked to shoot for an event this month and it will be my first time. I just have a canon 600d and a kit lens hope i can still get nice shots because the venue is not well lit
Very good, wish I had watch it four months ago. Well done mate.
I love your videos, Tony & Chelsea!! Thank you so much. They are lovely to watch, very informative, and, well, Chelsea is simply beautiful! 😊❤️
Great video, thanks! I have one question: for outside photo shoots, why did you say that it is best to have the sun in the back of the group? Wouldn't that create a silhouette around the group? Thanks for all your videos!
I really love these tutorials, Will get this book soon.
Matthew Emillio Thanks, Matthew!
You'll won't regret to buy! I recommend all books including buying guide, even if you are not planning to buy somethingv soon, there's a lot of useful information related to photography in general.
Hey, thanks. I ordered the book from amazon. Waiting on its arrival at the moment. :)
Question: I loved the video and purchased the ebook for kindle. Is there a way to get a version (digital version) with better quality pictures? The picture quality in the version I have is very low resolution and off putting while viewing on my iPad. It would be a much better experience with higher resolution photos.
When you focus on the front middle row, do you use single point focus? Thanks for the video.
Great tips! I'll try them for my Camera Basics class. Thank you, your videos are very useful!
I love to watch your toutorial s. Everything is explained in a simple and easily. Thanks a lot for this video.
Wow this is probably the most helpful and informative video I've ever seen. Thanks a bunch.
Wonderful suggestions for new entry of DSLR. Thank you for sharing.
really helpful since i just got some prime lens i did not get why some ppl where out of focus , i needed to go higher fstops , know iwill go practice , thank you again keep up the good work .

Love the videos wish I could share a group shot with you I did on Thanksgiving day I feel one of my best
Hi Tony!
Can you please compare the Sigma 300mm f/2.8 Ex APD HSM DG and the Canon EF 300mm f/2.8 L is ii usm.
Best group shot video I’ve found yet
Thank you Tony! I'm getting my final pieces of my studio equipment this week. I'm ready to practice. I will be volunteering my time taking studio photos of everyone and their families in a conference next year. It will be free to all attendees. I'm giving them the digital on a flash drive. I'm doing this just to give back what God has given me. If I purchase your book (hard copy) on Amazon, how do I get access to your videos?

This video is a few years old but it's still current. You packed in lots of great advice and information. Thanks
Excellent advice as I prepare to open a small photography business for fun somewhat
I always enjoy the way you detail things, thanks.
Hi Tony, great video!
How much time do you allot for a photo shoot & what's a good timeframe for the processing period?
Thank you.
Great video. Right to the point. Very dense information flow. Excellent. Thank you so much.
Great videos. Just got your book. Couldn't be happier about it.
You're welcome. Check Chapter 4 of my book (links in the description) for all the information you need about focusing and metering.
