  • A gay pastor in Austin is claiming that when he ordered a cake from Whole Foods, someone working in the bakery put a gay slur onto the cake. Pastor Jordan Brown uploaded a video of the cake and is now suing the company. Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian, hosts of The Young Turks, break it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.
    "A gay pastor in Austin, Texas accused a local Whole Foods store of discrimination for adding a homophobic slur to his cake order, KXAN-TV reported.
    Jordan Brown was scheduled to give a press conference on Monday following the release of a video detailing the incident.
    He says in the short video that he went to the company’s flagship store on April 14 and ordered a cake bearing the inscription, “Love wins.” An employee complied with the request, sealing the cake with a sticker.
    Brown’s lawsuit stated that he caught the slur written on the cake - which Brown intended to give to a congregation member - after driving away from the store. The video shows the cake inside the box bearing the company’s logo, and Brown also displays his receipt.”*

    the fact he goes out of his way to show that its still sealed in a box, for anyone but the courts, makes it obvious he's trying to make a spectacle and cover his tracks. If this was legit, that wouldn't matter in a press release, and would be a matter for the courts. He's waaaay too excited to show off his dirty work and draw attention to it.

      Look at the two videos again. In the pastor's video there is nothing on top of the cake box and the label covers the side and bottom of the box as a seal. Now look at the surveillance video. As the customer leaves with the cake, it clear that there is a white label on top of the box. The cashier appears to scan the top of the box with a hand scanner as this suggests the UPC label was on top of the box.
      Let's analyze the pastor's video again: the UPC label used to seal the box also has the price on it, but the price is at the bottom of the box. Does anyone find that suspicious that a bakery would put the price at the bottom? Also this was a custom order by all accounts. Why is it sealed to begin with? I've never owned a bakery but I would assume that you don't seal a custom order until after the customer inspects it. After all if there is a mistake with the message it can be corrected right away before the customer leaves.

Nothing about this adds up.

Having been to Austin, that is also a progressive town. There used to be a popular, homeless transgender man that ran for mayor a few times named Leslie. Whole Foods also noted that the person that decorated the cake was a LGBT member and high unlikely to write that smear on his cake.

    I work at a bakery similar to Whole Foods and I can smell bullshit all over this. I work with those label tapes for price seals all the time and the adhesive used is extremely weak when exposed to extreme cold temperatures like a freezer. You can easily to take it off and put it back on without any visible trauma.
    Also I wouldn't be surprised if the cake order said "Love Wins FAC" or "FAO" and he changed that C/O into a G. Considering the relative neatness of the other letters, that G looks sloppy. Once again by freezing the cake, you can lift and manipulate parts of iced letters without showing visible trauma. It takes some practice but it can be done especially if the iced letters was done in rose icing.

    As someone who works in a bakery at my local grocery store, when we hand a customer a customized cake, we are required to open the box and show them the cake to make sure it is what they wanted. I know that isn't the case everywhere, but I'd like to think that most bakery clerks would confirm the cake to make sure they are matching it with the right customer.

      meeg_2005 Even if Ahmeds was trying to get that response it does not matter. 1) They did not act like the clock was a bomb, they did not call the bomb squad, evaluate the school or anything else you should do when there is a threat of a bomb. I 2) He told them it was just a clock, it looked like a clock, there was no C4 or any other explosive looking stuff attached. He never said "look I got a bomb" The school acted in an incorrect fashion independent of Ahmed's actions. So not even closely the same even if this is a hoax.
      But sure keep using pejoratives, that will help us take you seriously.

    • @PrometheusFireNZ
      @PrometheusFireNZ 8 лет назад

      meeg_2005 I do not think I have missed the point at all as I do not think it was a Hoax bomb - I think It was a clock. He showed the clock to his engineering teacher first and said "look I made an electronic clock". At no time did he refer to it as anything other than a clock. The correct response from the teachers is “Coo nice clock, but listen science is awesome and all but people could get the wrong idea”. Which is what his engineering teacher said, what his English teacher said was “Eeeek the Muslim kid has a bomb”, “No it’s a just a clock”, “I don’t believe you!” and then acted in the exact manner you should do even for a hoax bomb. Also multiple white students have done the same with NO bomb scares. One of my mates used to do bomb disposal for his military service in Israel. Two things always pissed him off. First, wire colours mean nothing but what the maker wants them to so all this “Cut the red one” stuff is stupid. 2) Some do not look like what most of the Hollywood’s movies make them out to look like, infact they can look like anything. I can’t blame them for leaving if they did, why stay where you are not wanted.
      Yes people lie and scheme and maybe you are right that Ahmeds family did this hoping for nee jerk reaction but the school was in control of their actions and the acted the wrong way. But the three cases are COMPLETELY different. If this cake deal is a hoax then the store is nothing but a victim, they could have done nothing different and I hope the store nails this dude’s ass (no pun intended). The school could have acted differently and more measured. The Columbia deal was way worse since it was not harassment but rape. Now the thing that worries me is that when some real shit goes down people will be afraid to act or believe the real BS that happens. But to make that call I need compelling evidence. With the clock I do not see that other than a few people being upset he got stuff. There was not guarantee that the story would have blown up (there I go again) and gotten the attention it did. He could have just gotten in serious trouble or worse he could have gotten shot. Sounds like a stupid scheme to me.
      You know what would have proved this was a scheme. If the media had gotten all the raw parts and put him on the spot to remake it. If he had of going through a lot of time and effort to make it from scratch rather than break a clock and put it in a brief case then it would have been clear it was just a clock and not a scheme. Same if he could not do it. But screw that lets go for sensationalism!

      Condor DM they're not real Christians man. the Bible condemns being gay. And the priests that you're talking about are not coming out as being gay because as soon as they do they get kicked out of being a priest. Just look at what Pope Francis did when he met a gay priest.

    I heard that this pastor pulled his car over when he saw the cake and called the corporate office and left a message. Then called the store itself and they apologized and asked him to take photos. If this had really occurred, why didn't he just turn around and go back to Whole Foods and explain the situation instead of waiting to get home and take photos. Just ridiculousness on the pastor's part.

    • @MsMondaymornings
      @MsMondaymornings 8 лет назад

      I was just thinking, if this was real, what would a logical person do? But, yeah I agree with you. if you see the surveillance footage, the employee so obviously scanned the top of the box. Not the side where the label was on in the pastor's video.

  • @MichaelKerr71
    @MichaelKerr71 8 лет назад +1

    The cashier scanned the box on the top and to the side. But when Austin showed footage of the cake box, the upc label ended up on the side of the box. This is a clear case of fraud.

      +laurie spencer I know - because a few years ago I realized that, as an adult, I didn't have to wait for my birthday to buy a birthday cake! I also realized that I could get them to write anything on the cake - they have to write what you ask, cuz it's like bakery law or something...so I get them to write things like, "Cake decorators are stupid." HILARIOUS. I'll stand their and watch them write it, and sneer at them as they scowl at me while handing over my cake. Then I go to my car and I eat the whole thing, washing it down with a jug of chocolate milk. True story.

  • @josephinethornton3823

    I haven't done it but I've seen comments elsewhere on this topic- take a larger photo into Photoshop (or GIMP) and take color samples of the writing. It's clearly a different color with far more yellow, easily confused by the eye but not by software.
    Personally, he lost me at seeing it in the car. Who wouldn't immediately walk back in and demand a manager? Who instead seeks a news conference?
    We got chicken that was clearly spoiled and, despite being disabled and in a lot of pain, I drove back across town to take it to Whole Food and called a manager up to SMELL IT. They immediately pulled all similar packages from the shelves and offered us a full refund plus a gift card. That's merely a spoiled product, not HATE SPEECH.
    I find it excruciatingly hard to believe he didn't see it, the cashier didn't see it, and any bigot would have written it on there with a huge clear lid on the box to begin with.
    It was the only purchase he had. How could he not even look at it?
    LGBTQ peoples, I am fully behind you. Please don't misunderstand this stance. I think this is a scam. I don't know why he would do it but I am having serious difficulty believing this happened for a plethora of reasons.
    I watched his video first, for the record. I didn't believe it then, either. He spoke like Data (no contractions while denying he opened it).
    So much is suspect here.
