- A teenager in Ohio is accused of live streaming the rape of her friend. Allegedly, she didn’t call the police, but she did laugh. Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian, hosts of The Young Turks, break it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.
"A woman will appear in an Ohio court on Friday accused of broadcasting a friend’s alleged rape on the mobile app Periscope.
Marina Lonina, 18, faces charges that she used her mobile phone to broadcast live a 17-year-old girl being raped by a mutual acquaintance.
Lonina and the acquaintance, Raymond Boyd Gates, 29, are both set to be arraigned in Franklin County court in Columbus, Ohio.
“The victim and the two defendants were socializing and at some point in the evening it is alleged that Gates forced sexual intercourse with the victim and Lonina started Periscoping (live-streaming in real time) the sexual assault,” according to a statement from Franklin County prosecutor Ron O’Brien.
The alleged attack took place in late February at a house in Columbus, and a county grand jury on Wednesday agreed to indict Lonina and Gates on several serious felony charges.”*

That's certainly one way to traumatize someone. Worst thing is, the live streaming might traumatize the rape victim even more than the rape itself, depending on the person. Does not help with the self esteem issues at all. Not perhaps the best idea. If the part about the giggling is true, that's a special bit of disturbing to me in this story.

20 years is way way way way way way way way too long. It's a rape, not a murder. In Portugal our max prison sentence is 25 years and this would be something like 6-12 years here. We have lower crime rates than you also.

I'm not sure how periscope works but how tf does live streaming work as evidence? Do you get to save the live stream to your phone afterwards..? But if you're gonna save it, why not just record it on the camera? And if it doesn't save, then the live stream is useless because you'll have nothing substantial to show to cops other than the testimonies of whoever watched your live stream.

+Wearyaxe Is that the law in United States? Here in Finland people that have turned 16 can decide who they get to have sex with, no matter how old the partner is and if there is a case of rape with a person that has turned 16, the assailant is charged with "normal" rape, rather than statutory rape.
Although in cases where there is incest, if the younger person is under 18 and the other person is a parent or similar person that is in charge of raising them, the under 18-year old won't get charged with incest but if they're both over 18 they both can be charged.
And that has been our "Learn the sex-laws of other countries, Finland-edition."

I was just wondering about how and if in United States the limit for statutory rape is 18. When at the same time a 16-year olds can drive cars in most places there and 17-year olds can enlist in the military.
So making a person to be a minor when it comes to sex and rape, while they can at the same time be considered to be adult enough to operate a vehicle of 1-3 tonnes at speeds up 80mph and also be adult enough to make a decision to go fight and possibly die for their country just seems to be a bit strange and puritanical...

But i'd still think that if a person can be considered mature enough to go fight and die for their country at the age of 17, when their parents consent, shouldn't they be afforded the right to have sexual relationships with ANY people they want (regardless of the other persons age) before they turn 18?

So, when it comes to your original comment, while i find the rape-part of this story disgusting, having been raised in this country with our laws, i just can't take offence at the victim being a 17-year old any more than if she was 18, 20 or 22. Rape is a bad crime and the person guilty of doing that crime should be severely punished, but a 17-year old isn't a minor in my eyes when it comes to being a victim of such a crime. I find our 16-year limit to be more reasonable when it comes to this than an 18-year one.

Why would someone broadcast a criminal act if they didn't want it to be used as evidence of the event?
