  • Amber Heard and Johnny Depp got into a little bit of trouble after they tried to smuggle their dogs into Australia, falsifying travel documents. Charges were dropped, and some are now wondering if their new apology video was part of their deal to avoid punishment. Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian, hosts of The Young Turks, break it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.
    "Amber Heard pleaded guilty on Monday to falsifying travel documents to sneak her two pet dogs into Australia.
    The 29-year-old actress had been charged with illegally smuggling her dogs, Pistol and Boo, into the country last May, but managed to avoid jail time after prosecutors dropped the charge. Instead, Heard was given a one-month good behavior bond, according to NBC News.
    Now that the #WarOnTerrier is over, Heard and husband Johnny Depp want everyone to know they’re sorry for illegally bringing their dogs into Australia.
    The couple recorded an apology video, which can only be described as incredibly somber. The video was posted on Facebook by Australian politician Barnaby Joyce, who initially threatened to have the dogs euthanized. Joyce’s comments turned the case into a worldwide media sensation.”*

    The law has some fucking good reasons behind it, and these two expected to get around it only because they're famous and rich. I don't see what's endearing about the video, nor how the Australians should be the "bad guys" in any way, shape or form. This is a tipical story of entitled rich people. This was UNSUFFERABLE.

      I'm guessing you aren't Australian, as the Australian populace heard about this story for like 2 months and basically everyone hated the governments decision because the minister of the environment said that the dogs would have put down . Even the government itself, the prime minister specifically said that the minister for environment was over reacting and should drop the charges. It was a battle of the ego more than anything else as the Deep and the Minster where just insulating each other.

    • @swaggyjimmy
      @swaggyjimmy 8 лет назад +1

      Deltasource He never said the dogs would have to be killed, he said they had to be taken back to the USA in ~3 days (Which, for someone with a private jet is easily enough time). Or they would be put down. Which is completely reasonable considering the dogs were brought in illegally. What would you consider to be an alternative? You can't just expect the government to keep them in captivity while they are there. Also, I was born in Australia and have lived in Australia all my life. Yeah it could have been handled more professionally in the wording department but the law still shouldn't be changed for someone because they have a lot of fans.

    • @swaggyjimmy
      @swaggyjimmy 8 лет назад

      Deltasource Yes I see your point, not everyone has a private jet to take their dogs away. I'm glad we could have an intelligent discussion without any stupid name calling. That is kind of rare these days. But other people arguing that Johnny Depp is above the law are the people who I really can't stand.

      really humans can be infected with rabies and all it takes is one dog to bring it in and a dog is much more likely to carry rabbies while its in the early stages than actual humans so its a major safety concern that's why all pets to enter Hawaii must go into a 2 month quartine.

    'Use your words wisely when it comes to pet loving Americans, and their dogs' This is a great example of the sense of entitlement which Americans have, when going overseas. No, just because you're American doesn't mean Australians need to chose our words wisely. Plus I didn't think you got the point, dog loving Americans CAN'T BRING THEIR DOGS -period... unless they've been screened, checked etc etc- so in that regard it's best just to say the facts. Furthermore Barnarby Joyce used the words 'put down'
    (a euphemism in Australia) and not Murder/homicide which is only applicable to humans where the act is premeditated or incited by malice (not in this case). It turns out the dogs ended up at a poodle parlour in the Gold Coast before getting taken back to the US. If it wasn't for the fact that the dogs were Johnny Depp's, and Amber Heard's I'm sure they would have been put down. Yes falsifying travel documents is a crime. It's hard for me to believe that anyone thinks fraud is alright, and I deplore the commentators above for their levity. Most people in their right minds whom knew smuggling their dogs in was illegal, so much so that they'd have to falsify travel documents, would take the low road, and leave their dogs behind with a carer or something. Oh, and to be honest I'd say Australia is a continent... and an island, but to be politically correct it's a continent; in the same way that Antarctica is a continent.

    I feel like I need to defend my country. Our current government is a coalition of a major centre-right party and a minor far-right party. Barnaby Joyce is the leader of the minor far-right party. Everyone here thinks he's embarrassingly nuts. We mostly think that Heard and Depp were acting in a very entitled manner, but we also mostly think that Joyce went way too far. The laws that protect our environment are very important (we're an isolated ecosystem after all) but people visiting us is also important.
    Look, we do have these laws. Just get the permits for your dogs first, it's not an over-the-top requirement. That way, the idiot Barnaby Joyce won't try to kill your dogs.

  • @thegatestoavalon

    Australian's saw the grey bag the assistant carried off the plan, it was evident there was something alive in that bag. l don't blame Johnny Depp at all and don't know why he was even in that video, only that Amber Heard should have been, it cost Johnny Depp $500,000 to send those dogs back, also the house that they were staying in whilst Johnny organised to send the dogs back had to be cleaned down. l know it's hard to understand, but Australia doesn't have rabies, foot and mouth disease, nor mad cow disease. That's why we are so strict, l agree with you in regard to Barnaby Joyce, he was a little bit embarrassing, l think the fact that Johnny does come down to Australia quite a fair deal is why the dogs weren't put down. We know all about Amber Heard and the stunts she pulled on Johnny Depp later, Johnny is always welcome in Australia. Amber Heard please don't come back your not welcome.

    Australia has very strict laws on protecting its environment just like the US use to have very strict laws on black people not being allowed to sit in the front of the bus. So, it is understandable that Americans would find laws of other countries incompatible with their own. But, the law is the law, and no one should get a free pass, especially not actors who make really questionable quality movies.

    Am I the only one who interpreted the video as being condescending? It didn't seem forced at all. They knew exactly what they were doing: she called Australia an "island", he spoke about how the law will come after you (nothing major happened to them), and their tone was tongue-in-cheek the entire time. The whole video reeked of condescension toward Australia and Aussies.

  • @123rockfan
    @123rockfan 8 лет назад +3

    I don't understand why they didn't do a sincere apology, it could have been so easy. They should have simply said "We broke the law and we are deeply sorry. We are very close to our pets, and because of that, we made an extreme lapse in judgement and did not put the safety of Australia first. We have learned from our mistake."
    Done.

    • @GuillermoSTD
      @GuillermoSTD 8 лет назад

      +123rockfan simple: because they're rich, and they're probably angry that unlike in America, where they could have probably gotten away with it with ease (and money), apparently in Australia these pesky things called laws apply to celebrities as well.
      Unfortunately you can tell more about their true characters from this little incident than from all the fake, arranged interviews they give when they promote their movies.

      Lets be serious, Australia doesn't need to strictly enforce a law like this when the dogs were obviously vaccinated. The purpose of this type of legislation is to keep non vaccinated dogs out. There is also no reason to believe they did it on purpose, it was likely a mistake that anyone could make.
      They could have gotten an apology that was less condescending if it were handled better from the beginning. I think most people wouldn't like being forced to give an apology if someone publicly threatened that they would euthanize your dogs to cause controversy.

    • @GuillermoSTD
      @GuillermoSTD 8 лет назад

      +mikesdav you are way too forgiving, I think. Apparently they didn't declare the dogs at the customs, and they hid them from the Customs officials who boarded the plane when they landed (just what I read, I obviously wasn't there), so it hardly looks like an honest mistake. The authorities only learned about their presence in the country because they posted a picture on social media.
      As for the apology, the whole thing is a mess... I'm sure both Depp and the Australian authorities could have handled this non-issue 10x better, because I don't think anyone won here, and I have a hard time believing that the Australian minister of agriculture would have bothered to threaten killing Depp's dogs if he had cooperated from the start, or that they would have demanded that apology.

    These presenters are such an annoyance with their fake laughter and lack of understanding of the real issue. Have they never heard of Rabies, foot and mouth disease etc. They should have checked with their own U.S. Border Control and Department of Fish and Wildlife as to what the consequences would be in a similar situation in the U.S.A. Instead of attacking the Australians on their policies they should be commending them but I guess these presenters don't have the IQ to understand the implications of such a breach on a Nations right to protect its own borders.

    Sadly for the Australian people, we've got our equivalent of Republicans with a majority in the federal House of Representatives (congress) and a plurality in the Senate.
    Add to that Malcolm Turnbull (Romney-like ex-Goldman Sachs partner) for Prime minister.
    Most shamefully of all, Barnaby Joyce (climate change denier among other things) is our deputy prime minister. Think of him as the rejected bumpkin love child of Paul Ryan and Louie Gohmert.
    Our Greens party has a presence in the Senate and a single seat in the HoR, but we lack a charismatic speaker who can attract older voters with straight talk and younger voters with informed policy.

    This is not about the Australian Governments or celebrity, both of which come and go. It is about bio-security on a continent that has some unique flora and fauna that has so far kept numerous pests and diseases out that could kill/destroy those plants and animals by having strict screening procedures and laws that emphasise the serious implication of ignoring the ecological consequences. Please don't see this as a challenge to authority.....Australia has already seen the devestation caused by foreign species that were deliberately introduced .

  • @jamesbluntirules

    Yes the video is very funny, and Depp's comments after the video was made prove 100% that he meant nothing that he said, possibly because it wasn't him facing any criminal charges but rather his wife was. Yes, Barnaby Joyce has a reputation here in Australia for being, I guess you could say direct, with his language and there was criticism at the time for the way he handled it, but Depp broke the law and didn't even have to go to court. That's probably why he's got an attitude of "I'm a big time celebrity and so I can break the law and get away with it." whereas his wife is more subdued.

    as much as it's extreme to euthanize 2 dogs over this, there is a reason why Australia have strick Animal Trafficking Laws. Australia have a long history of forgeign animals being introduce to the enviroment and ravaging the local flora and fauna, this includes Toads, Rabbits, Boars, and even Dingos. Yes, Dingos are not native to Australia, they were once Domestic Dogs that escape, reproduce, and gone feral, they drove alot of native species to near Extiction, and are probably the main reason why creatures like the Thylacine came extict (Tho, some people claim to still see them, but thats for another story), and they are a threat to people too, just look up Azaria Chamberlian to see a case about it. Basically the reason why the Australian Government is making a big deal about this is because the last thing they need is another Plague of Dogs

      +otamanlvhs well depending on whether you're returning from a region on high alert from bio threats, you'd either be asked to hand in a medical assessment while still there, or, in my personal case, returning from U.A.E, we were asked to fill in a questionaire on plane declaring what sort of animals and/or bio matter we had come in contact with, hence if they'd found anything threatening they would have most likely taken further action upon landing.
