  • We've got a long way to go, and a short time to get there... so today, I start digging in on my 1971 Dodge Demon to get it "race ready." What I should be doing is buying slicks and a nitrous kit, but what I'm doing instead is... removing parts? Bear with me here, because I have a plan. Also, I've got a bone to pick with a few commenters, so excuse me while I yell at them.

    The black interior in that car is gorgeous. You could just about eat off the underside of that car! Kudos to Dale for being consistent with maintenance over all these years.

    Originally Dodge 4 speed shifters were made by Hurst, when Hurst was a very young company. The Hurst "Super Shifter" (not Competition Plus) was used for 64 and 65, but Dodge switched to Inland shifters for 66, because they had a reverse lockout. The inland shifters turned out to be terrible for performance shifting and in the middle of the 68 model year Dodge went back to Hurst shifters. Because they lacked a reverse lockout, a reverse gear light was added to the dash. Most of the factory installed Hurst shifters have 0.500" shifting rods, while aftermarket Hurst shifters have 0.375" shifting rods. Mr. Gasket shifters have 0.430" shifting rods. Hurst was bought by Mr. Gasket in 1987. Even with the large diameter factory Hurst shifting rods, many racers weld reenforcement rods along the lengths of the shifting rods, to stiffen them up, especially with the long E-body rods. The early, pre-1970 side cover shifts better and faster than the newer side covers on the A833 4 speeds. The old transmissions used bronze shifting forks with the early cover and the newer 4 speeds use stiffer steel shifting forks in their covers. To get the "good" steel shifter forks to fit the "good" early side cover, the nipples on the steel shift forks have to ground off and can be compared to the older bronze forks for comparison. Racing with an A833 4 speed, use the early, pre-1970 side cover and the modified to fit, late steel shift forks. Replace any nylon shifter rod bushing washers with steel ones and grease them. Note the two Dodge bucket seats are heavier than a bench seat. Some lighter weight buckets can help trim weight.

      @@DeadDodgeGarage If you haven't done so already, some more dead weight can be "temporarily" removed, by removing the bottom and the back of the rear seat from the car. Most of my street cars were total street racers and had the floor covering removed too. I cleaned and painted the floors black, just for a clean look. On the cheap, I used lightweight, raised up Pinto bucket seats in the front, sometimes with a quick disconnect under the passenger seat.

      @@BrandonLeeBrown this just isn’t that car. It’s keeping its full interior and all of the stuff that’s supposed to be there. I have much different plans for my Barracuda. It will be primarily dedicated to strip action. The Demon is not a serious racer, and to be honest, I really don’t care how fast it ultimately is. I just want to get as much out of the package that is already there as I can.

      @@DeadDodgeGarage Yeah, I get it. These days it's tough thinking about going too extreme on the street, when there are LT4's, Coyotes and Hellcats tearing it up. Years ago, I had a super serious Demon, with stroker 440 and when I cut the fender wells for the 2 inch headers, I decided to add subframe connectors and a sort or 6 point roll bar to help stiffen it up a bit. I didn't; want to make front supporting tubes so high and long to impede getting in and out of the front seats, so with them being so short, they likely didn't meet any track rules, but they were welded in place.

    Love your vids. My first car was a 70' Duster with a 225 slant six. Slow, but indestructible. Next a 74" Charger SE, then a 69' Roadrunner, and then a 73' Challenger // now I am a Jeep guy, a different kind of affliction, but still similar. :)

      @mtbpirates My Grandpa had 2 Plymouth dusters in the 80’s not at the same time here in San Diego. One was Sand color and the other was blue. Long story short me and my Aunt his daughter we were in the same grade 11 months apart. And he would drop us off at elementary school. And they were pretty beat up cars I’m sure they had a slant six. I think one of them has a 3 speed on the floor. But my Aunt was so embarrassed as a kid being dropped off in front of the school. And I thought the car was kool. 😎👍👍👍

      @@DeadDodgeGarage lately I have been here my entire life except for Desert Shield and I lived in Mesa, AZ. for a couple of years and moved back home. We have had 11 tornados in a couple of weeks time and I have never seen that many in a short stretch of time here. Been raining a lot here but it is way more than usual past 4 years now. Doesn't it rain like every other day there or something like that?

    The third pedal can be mastered. Example 1. Herb McCandless Example 2. Ronnie Sox. I have faith you can become Example 3. Automatic transmissions may be a slight advantage but they will never be cooler or more fun. 4 speeds forever for this old school guy. 👍🇺🇸

      My father raced manual transmissions with the guys that got famous, from the 50's to about 1978, when he switched to an automatic for the switch to bracket racing. Consistency became more important than fastest ET. He quit racing after 79 or 80. sitting in the fiberglass seat for long periods at the track started bothering his legs. That may have been another reason he switched to automatic, but he never said so. The veins in his legs did give him problems though. He raced with the big names back then, before they were known. He raced locally, so he remained semi-pro, as he didn't want to give up his regular job to tour. Those guys remembered him and knew him. We'd see them at the track and in restaurants on the weekends.

    I never missed the sway bar on my 67 B body, but it it did help with the front end rise. After a few years, the rubber discs in the sway bar are so beat up the lost motion cancels any benefit. I had long travel Mopar rear drag shocks, if you get good traction and the rear rises to the point where the shocks top out, it’s ugly. Adjustable front shocks worked really well together with the missing sway bar, the weight transfer was fantastic

      Back in the 70's, with my high school street racer, the whole car would raise up, front and rear. I added shock absorber extensions on the bottom of the rear shocks, as it was really planting the tires. I didn't have the money for special drag shocks. Worn front shocks, no sway bar and heavy duty rear shocks with bolt on extensions.

      @@BrandonLeeBrown yes... let the rear end rise to get street tires to plant, but today's drag radials and slicks on glue need something a little different... too much rise causes a problem when you hit the end of the travel... and then she drops like a rock. ..

    Jamie- being as prepared as possible in this life is always a great thing; but the stress and anxiety over details isn’t worth the trade off.
    The car was born a badass, and we just watched you ripping gears all through the video 🤷🏻‍♂️… sure-(the u-joint…don’t forget) 😂.. point is that-both of these cars are badass Mopars. All of the people involved are real genuine salt of the earth Mopar people. The simple fact that you’re going from one corner of the country-all the way across the entirety of the rest of it-meeting Mopar legends every step of the way…is in itself a huge deal! Once you leave Washington don’t spend another minute fretting about the intangibles. Live in the moment, enjoy the journey! Remind some kid who might be watching…Dreams happen every day brother! That kid was you..🤷🏻‍♂️see what happened! 😊

    Jaime, I like how you explained things in simple terms that novices can understand. As for the office chair experts complaining about the paint having been touched up in a few spots, ignore them.... They are jealous that you have a car that nice and that it is 85% original paint. There will always be whiners who will try to pick apart any car that is not theirs.

    Dude you are absolutely killing me...back in 1980 when i was 19 i got my first car, a73 340 dart 4sp 3:55 ls (yes i swapped an 8 3/4 in it) (bright yellow). Watching you drive that brings back some awesome memories unfortunately it brings back the memory of leaving the car in california when i moved to arizona got nothing for it and found out a towing company took it. So enjoy that baby!

    From what I saw your shock mod and a little more height in nose with the way you have the leafs and snubber set should do the trick. Way back when mopars leafs would open and almost touch the track on launch to half track. Coolest thing to watch. U joint,don't forget. Luck to you.

    Make sure the rear shocks are long enough so that they do not fully extend. Good on removing the sway bar. Good on back off the snubber. 90/10 shocks. Six cylinder torsion bars. SS springs Classic Direct Connection set up. I had SS springs, long shock and a snubber that hit so hard in ripped the bottom of the floorboard where the snubber snubs. This combination put the original LO23 Darts and Cudas into the 9's.

    An old Hurst Ram Rod shifter would help a lot at the track, that's what i used to run in my 69 Swinger. Don't forget to get a U-Joint😄

      A quick question I may have missed the back story on.. I know you’re running a 360 currently; is that what Dale campaigned in the car mostly or was it the 340? Just curious. I love both engines but I will say from my experiences they seem to behave quite a bit differently for the small variation in makeup. There’s a great family local to me named the Devore’s that have been very successful campaigning the exact setup you’re running currently-I mean like each generation has won the yearly championship in Tulsa! Wish there was more time.. a day with these guys could certainly help you fill a notebook full of tips, I mean 🤷🏻‍♂️idk..they might know something the Williams boys don’t know-or better yet-something they learned and forgot about 😁. Maybe next time you come through.

    First thing I wanna do to my Hornet when I revive it is subframe connectors. Many years ago I had it on a 2-post lift..... we opened the driver door and it made a fairly loud "POP" noise, and then we couldn't get it closed again. You'd think a car that is a 2-door post would be relatively stiff. Considering I wanna swap to 3.73 gears, yeah.... gonna have to strengthen the old girl up.
    On topic, my old Swinger was a PIG with no Sway bar. In a hard turn, it would lean over, hit the bump stop and the rest was left up to the tires.
    Compared to my V8 Valiant with a Sway bar.... it was literally night and day. The Valiant was tight and nimble. Factory 727 and 3.21 Sure Grip, too!
    Are you gonna take those tow hook / tie downs off, too?

      Oh yeah. I’ve had many A-bodies without front bars and they’re generally pretty terrible. Yes I am planning to pull the hooks.

    We drilled out the front shocks back in the 70's. That and no sway bar really aided front end rise.

    the advantage you have over Slaghammer is, Slaghammer has a truck rear suspension. It's never going to hook unless Tony does something about it. Now, you with your Demon suspension, (and the new U-joint you need to get), will hook just fine.

    I put the KYB gas a just shocks on my gm a body’s (70-72) and it made a world of difference. When used to go watch NMCA races, the mopars would just track straight, whereas the gm’s would shake rattle and roll. It was quite noticeable.

      Torsion bars! They’re a big part of how Mopars are as well suited to drag racing as they are. The shocks are completely extra in many cases.

    What I usually found is that people would way overthink Mopar suspensions and add junk that doesn't do any good, and of course the aftermarket vendors were only too happy to sell them all that useless junk. Basically, they are designed quite well stock, and just a few simple zero dollar tricks is all it takes (like removing the rear spring clamps on the back side, and adding clamps on the front). Anyway, I am looking forward to see the race between the Demon and Slaghammer. I am rooting for the Demon, I just like the screaming small block with a stick in one of the coolest A-bodies ever built.

    Nice walk around. As far as the front sway bar, I just take off the left front end link for Drag Racing. Of course it is worth taking the whole bar for weight reduction, but if you want to make back to back runs and want to check it quickly, the end link alone helps. When road racing I do that to the rear bar to keep it from swapping ends, but leave on for Auto-Crosses. BTW cool car.

My thought with leaving one link on is that whichever arm is still attached may still resist drooping when the nose comes up, harming weight transfer and potentially pulling the car out of level. But obviously I haven’t tested it myself. For an all out drag racer, I think it’s extra equipment. But this one will be going back on when I’m done with this phase.

    Had a 71 Dart with a blown up 225. Replaced the motor with a 318. Used a 72 340 parts car for the Kmember and drivetrain. Wound up with a vibration at the flywheel. Come to find out that post 71 340s have externally balanced crankshafts like the 360s.
    BTW, instead of removing the sway bar could it be just disconnected at one end and reconnected after race day (no matter the extra weight)?
    Love the way that thing jumps up when you punch the throttle.

      Disconnecting the end links could work, but you’d probably want to unhook both, and then the bar would be left hanging there. It really isn’t hard to fully remove and reinstall it.

    I pick up a 1971 Plymouth Swinger / Demon ? For my wife to drive in 1986 while in Florida. I think someone was being Quit after the white body over blue interior give a way. It was sport Slant 6 and the 80's Ford Ranger II's wheels really made the look better and cheaper lighter than those Creager's. Front lower control arm adjustable was great. You might changing it and see if it helps. Sounds prefect.

    Seen Slag Hammer in person, not impressed. Definitely team DDG. You have a great plan. Sure you’ll find what works for you.
    I ran no snubber (automatic) 3000lb SS springs. Got those crappy turn click comp engineering shocks. Set 50/50 back, 90/10 front. 1 solid engine mount . 1.49 best 60ft in a B body.

    more over stated suggestion. The weight of front sway bar removed and the 2 tow hooks, we see them we know they are old and are on car. now remove for less weight way up front. hehehe. also the factory rims and factory lug nuts up front would save maybe 40#s .UTG Would do that lol

    Yeah, torsion bars are springs. They are just a different form of spring. Some people just don't get it.To make a '68 Fury3 handle better you take the front roll bar off. How do I know? Testing by others and myself. It worked wonderfully.

      Not stock. Dale added those and used them to flat tow the car to the race track behind a station wagon or a van back in the 70s. They’ve been on the car ever since, but I actually finally removed them last night.

    Qlispé Raceway Park, formerly Spokane Raceway Park (It's a long story), has "No-prep street racing" whatever that is, on the 24th if you want to make a very long trip over the mountains. Doesn't seem worth it to me, but it would be a test for the ramp truck. It is right next to a tribal casino so there's that.

    @Jamie have you considered ordering an SFI Approved aluminum flywheel? If its a more race than street car it will let your revs come up quicker. Does it have a Line Lock? That's the easiest way to get them hot.

      I am planning aluminum for my Barracuda. This is probably the most serious racing this car will ever do, so I’m not going there. Yes, it has a line lock. I haven’t had much luck with it.

      They definitely aren’t factory shocks. I don’t know what they are, but I see a part number I can look up. Most likely just a cheapo stock replacement. But I definitely see your reasoning there.

    good chassis mods. there's many a debate: if the dizzy is ported, switch to manifold vac before the race. all in on timing at the line is much better than waiting a second or two for it to come in, not worried about gas mileage on the track. drag racer co-worker is retiring in two weeks, he runs that triangle type metal air filter without the filter on his 318 dart when racing, i'll assume so it passes tech... better air flow. or they have lids with filters as well. I relo'd battery in my c body to the trunk. 104 octane boost always helped us a bit at the track. don't forget the shaft stuff! Good luck you got this. what track and date in Tn again? i might visit to see in person and get yelled at about my comments. oh and i sold my b body headers!

      I’m not running vacuum advance and probably won’t be, although I have considered it as a means of reducing the pinging I have experienced under certain conditions. I did a video recurving this distributor last year and it has been great ever since.
      Those triangle filters are absolute garbage. I prefer not to drive around with a fire hazard and a pile of disintegrating foam to be sucked into my engine. I have temporarily installed a velocity stack, which it seems to like.
      And we are not publicizing the race details. Don’t want to get mobbed at the track while trying to get this done.

      @@DeadDodgeGarage agree about the foam, he runs the cage without the foam. Engine masters did an episode regarding different type air filters vs donkeys loss or gained. Velocity stack was was the winner! Good luck at the track!

      As far as I know, those brackets are only found on dual exhaust cars - and I’m fairly sure 340 cars would be the dual exhaust package at that time.

    I used to run 18 lbs. When i ran Drag radials on my Challenger at rhe track but its automatic and weighs 3500 lbs. So its heavier than the Demon Im sure! I switched to slicks a few years ago tho

      Are the E-body’s that heavy? I thought they were around 32-3300, then again leaving just a few niceties is probably some of it-you’ve got a really nice car brother!

      @MidnightOilsRestoration Thanks man! Yeah when my Challenger still had power steering and power brakes and steel hood it weighed 3534 lbs, it was close to 3800 lbs with me in it,I've taken about 200 lbs off of it so it weighs a little over 3500 lbs with me in it now 👍

      E49 charger was quicker then most V8s to 100 mph and over the quarter stock Even out guned the mighty GTHO Ford to 100 mph .

    18-22 psi in those drag radials, hot. Polyurethane front leaf spring bushings. My 69 360 Dart goes 1.64 60ft w/o snubber, w/HD 6 leaf spings, poly bushings and DOT 26x10.50 slicks.
    1.7X 60 ft should be enough to pull UTG Valiant, but it will likely take you years to get to that type of 60 ft. Either way a Mopar will win.
