I can't imagine any woman allowing her mother to speak like that to her husband if she valued her marriage. But then again, this is a sitcom, all about making people look laugh. No one did it better than the Honeymooners. This scene didn't even need Norton.

They did play that song on the game show where Ralph was a contestant, but the question was "Who WROTE Suwanee River," which, unfortunately, was the only song that Ralph knew nothing about, even though he spent days studying about popular music with Ed Norton's help. Norton would play a popular song on a piano and Ralph would guess the tune's title.
When Ralph is on the game show, and says he doesn't know who wrote "Suwannee River," the emcee tells the program's pianist to play a few bars of it, hoping it will stimulate Ralph's memory, but instead of giving the correct answer (Stephen Foster), Ralph nervously answers "Ed Norton," because he recognizes "Suwannee River" as the tune that Norton plays in order to "warm up" before playing a song that Ralph has to guess what its title is.
Apparently, Norton never told Ralph the name of his "warm up" song or its writer. He probably figured Ralph knew about it already, because he bragged about how he was such a big expert on popular songs.

Ralph was right he didn’t have to say a word and her mother started in, and Alice just sat there and let her mom go on and on about the rent, her sister’s husband being a better provider, bringing up old boyfriends, and then finally the ending of the play I don’t blame Ralph for going off on her and throwing her out of the apartment.
