I was pleasantly surprised that Gordon-Levitt's character didn't magically overcome his past trauma and become an ace pilot simply because the plot needed him to. I assumed this tired trope from the minute Murphy made fun of him "not cutting it."

I used to say that the 80s were the best in all forms of cinema. However, now that I'm older and I have studied more films, the 70s had amazing cinema, especially in drama and sci-fi. And of course, the 90s were great for independent film (and dumb action movies...which I love).

This is a fantastic film. I enjoyed it! A real trip down memory lane! And I love the 80s!
    **Spoiler**
One of my favorite moments is when Axel tries to rent a hotel room. And the movie actually addresses how tired he was about having to con his way into anything. I really appreciated that!

I enjoyed the movie too but there was one little thing that caught my eye a few times. It may have just been me, but did anyone else notice some odd framing on some of the closeups? I noticed that quite a bit of the top of peoples heads were cut off due to framing. Didn't take anything away from the movie, just felt a little too close lol

I also noticed that, part of it was Netflix auto zoomed in on my phone but even towards the end and zoomed out Foley's head was partially cut off at points

The film tries to be "fresher" only as much as necessary, and otherwise recreates the atmosphere of the originals. It's even quite charming in that. All those clichés, put in here consciously, that slight naiveté familiar from 80s films... without trying to make a film completely serious or turn conventions upside down. It was fun.

As a hefty dose of nostalgia, I liked it. It felt entirely unnecessary to me though and was way too late to try and bring back these characters. I don't feel like it ever really truly recaptured the magic. It's like one of those delicious five star dinners at whatever high priced restaurant when you get it to go, then you take it home and a day later try to reheat it. Sure it's the same food, but it's just not the same, something's not quite right. BHC 1 and 2 are among my favorite films of the 80s. There was a subtle dig at his 94 outing and how it wasn't received so well at one point in the movie, broke the 4th wall a little and that was funny but, yeah, I'd lump this in with 94.

I also thought that, but I'm kind of happy they didn't focus on relationship building between him and Fey's daughter. He played the part time partner to Foley and then was done after the case, and it also sets up another sequel if that's in Netflix's future for him to come back and have that resolution

    • @terrymcginnis01
      @terrymcginnis01 Месяц назад

@@ther3aper561 you're right. I kind of think having him in the hospital room with Foley would have been nice, maybe explaining fritters or something. The last scene of JGL in the movie is him shooting the villain and looking over in concern to Axel. Maybe JGL just wasn't available to film a final scene?

Huge fan of this franchise! I’ve watched this twice now and you’re spot on about how this movie is not trying to reinvent the main characters to fit the time but rather have the exact same characters navigate through this very different time. You can just feel how Eddie, John, Judge & even Bronson slipped right back into their characters like an old pair of slippers! There was only 1 thing I was hoping to at least hear (or see) & Axcel only mentioned this once - who is Jane’s mother? Janice from BHC3 ?? - after all she was about to take him to the ‘tunnel of love’ at the end of the movie 🤪

I really enjoyed it. A lot of people seem very mixed, but it felt like an 80s movie time traveled to today and that's what we got. Eddie Murphy has some legit laugh out loud moments and the lady playing his daughter is really acting well in it. It was pretty basic and you could tell the bad guy immediately, but hey sometimes a straightforward story is ok
Hell, even the establishing shots and color grading are straight from the 80s

Not enough screen time with all 3 O.G protagonists at the same time and not enough Rosewood period. I'm also so tired of reboots/ sequels relying on "Remember this". Not a bad movie but no where near as good as the original 3.

I loved it. I wish they wouldn't have written his daughter character as so over the top bratty. At a certain point, I was just like, there is no way this is Axel's daughter. But, all and all, I give it 8.5/10. Really glad to have it. Have watched it a few times. Hope we get BHC5.

Yeah BHC 4 Axel F is a return to why we all fell in love with the films as a whole as well as the Axel Foley character, good jokes, one liners, quick wits. Also pretty intriguing detail story about one of the task force behind the cop murder and distribution of drugs for the cartel.

Netflix feels like a good match because it had a bit of Made For TV vibe but it was still miles above the 1994 sequel.
As far as I'm concerned this is the official Part 3 of the trilogy.

I thought it was a solid, entertaining film, but only two things would've improved it: Eddie bringing back his trademark sealion laugh (he doesn't do that anymore) and a little less use of the Axel F theme. I counted at least four different versions.

It's interesting to me that you say Axel's daughter isn't just a one note character and their relationship isn't just one note because I watched Sean Chandler's review and he was saying that he found her to be very one note and that was probably his biggest criticism of the film. Just a neat little observation.
