It knew what buttons to push for those who grew up with these movies, and pressed them at the exact right times. What more could you want?
No. Better writing, directing, and acting is needed. Cookie cutter filming style, a bunch of unnecessary cheesing, not funny, and character motivations were weak. I get that it tickled your nostalgia and yes they know how to hit some of those moments of low hanging fruit for the easiest of consumers. “Wow, an upgrade of the old car” “it’s the jacket” “the old gang” and Jeffrey went home for the night while the city was being destroyed on a big case. Right, brilliant. 🤣 Y’all are funnier than the movie.
You make an excellent point about the "strained" relationship with his daughter, especially when the movie goes out of its way in the beginning to show that Axel clearly cares about the people in his community. Two other little things that bothered me was that his old car in Detroit looked better than it did in any other movie even though it's now a 60 year old car. And that Detroit letter jacket looked like it was picked off of the rack every morning that he shot with it. Minor details, but they hint at a more polished look that felt more like a movie than the realism of the world they were building.
I was also very surprised that it was not a cinema release, but did very much enjoy it. The only thing that I was waiting for that never came, was the iconic Axel Foley laugh. For me that is the only thing that felt different and stuck out like a sore thumb.
What i love the most about the movie is how all the OG Characters were NOT forced just to be a cameo in the new movie. I think every character shows up, and story continues at a good pace. There arent any slo mo walking in the room shots with heroic music playing, then they say, "I had a call for some Backup " Then they die 2 minutes later. I am so proud and happy that this movie did not have to do that. Yes, sure, there might be a few seconds to introduce a character, but it didn't feel any longer or drawn out than any other new character intro in any other movie. This movie respects itself, and it really does it right for a resurrection of a dead franchise. It feels like it just picks up where it left off, and thats the best Fan service you can ever truely do. and it brings in the new audience . Fans dont need a wink to the camera, or bringing in a og character just to see them in a pointless cameo appearance. If they show up, they should be there for the whole ride is what im saying. Fans want story's in the life of our favorite characters. Its that simple, true continuation of their life in their world. And this movie did a great job of this exact thing. Its not a perfect movie by any means,... but it might be the best sequel that has ever come out. Definitely in recent times of old movies coming back, this is a true sequel! Go watch it!!
I had to ReWatch all 3 Parts before watching this. I think it brings back so many memories... The Car, his old buddies, etc. He has done it again. Yes, there were moments he tries to patch things up with his daughter. I think he tries to explain to her, that her Mom was something more scary than the mafia.... Epic !!! Please make a Part 5, and make sure Eddie lived to a hundred :-)
Great point about Axel and his daughter. The guy who was always loyal and willing to throw his career away for an old criminal friend and cop friend across the country has lost his daughter because he’s too involved in his work. The problem is that it’s like they don’t actually go back and watch the old movies to make sure they’re getting things right. Are they just going off of their memory which isn’t good? Example: Coming 2 America they still had the arranged fiancé hopping and barking when she actually left making an Orangutan’s sound. “Eww Eww Eww”.
When Kevin Bacon's character was first introduced. I thought right off the bat ,"Dirty Cop". Good movie though. Entertaining. The use of some of the original music was brilliant.
Axel was great friends with the old Chief from part 1. He was there for his daughter when her dad was hurt. He had a friend with a criminal past and he heard him out instead of turning him in. Axel letting his relationship fall apart with his daughter is not in his character but is might be in hers.
The parent/estranged kid thing is getting old. But it was great they inserted the og soundtracks here and there. Fun seeing Serge and Jeff, and Shooter! Wish they’d found even a small spot for Jenny (retired, on a phone call or something). Wish they’d done that with Maverick too. Overall a fun nostalgic watch.
Just like Star Wars episode 7 was a copy of episode 4; Axel F is a copy of the original movie (the only thing missing was the karaoke bar should have had strippers.). That being said, this is a really fun movie. It felt like being home again. It was fast paced, nostalgic while fresh, and made good use of the characters. Joseph Gordan Levit was an excellent addition. Kevin Bacon's character could have been more devious (what straight men can spot a pair of designer shoes and knows they cost $2000?). Despite their ages, the original cast stepped up and did their jobs. I am ready for the next movie!
You nailed the estranged daughter conundrum. I When I watched the trailer, my very first thought was Axel is a loyal person. No way he would let his relationship with his daughter fall apart. Nope.
The movie is great & fun to watch! Eddie Murphy is great as Axel Foley. but I would like to see more screen time to Rosewood & Taggart and better villains.
Maybe Axel was SO loyal to work that his daughter got forgotten at times. It’s kinda the cliche cop thing. He builds the loyalty and love where he needs to and takes hers for granted because she’s his daughter. Maybe.
For a sequel they did a great job. It's a decent film and a lot of fun call backs and cameos. Glad to see a good old revival sticking to the old feeling
I personally like how they handled the jane-axel storyline ( mainly because it fills in the holes inbetween Beverly hills cop 3 and axel f ( mainly kinda hints who his wife was etc)
@TheHeroBleeder well it wasn't the woman from part 3 cause part 3 take place in 1994 and his daughter on her driver's ID year of birth is 1991. So who is the mother?
Watched it last night on Netflix, they did an awesome job, it definitely felt like Beverly Hills Cop movie! It had the humour, had the old school action, had Axel’s mischievous manner, it paid tribute to the old films (especially music wise). So proud of Eddie Murphy and the old gang coming back, THIS was a successful sequel to the nostalgia to other 3 films most definitely!…p.s oh yeah, waaay better then the 3rd haha. Was worth the wait!
I liked it! I had a stupid grin on my face the entire movie because I could close my eyes and still sounded like I was watching an older BHC. Eddie was funny and I thought the whole cast was great in general. Also great to see Judge Reinhold again. Albeit, briefly to an extent but still awesome to see him.
The sad thing about Hollywood writing is that every movie like this either has estranged kids, or kids who get in over their heads and need Dad's help. It's almost never just them being well adjusted and having a character arc. Almost as annoying as the kid who seems to know everything and stumbles through the film with invulnerable plot armor. How tough would it have been to follow the first film's premise and have his daughter being like Jenny, who just happened to work for some bad people and stumbled in to trouble, needing Axel's help. But looking forward to checking this out. Eddie was on top of the mountain for 3 or 4 years and then couldn't pick a movie that wasn't a complete disaster. It'll be good to see him in something watchable again.
@@burna2650 His movies weren't doing that great in the 90s. The only one that was successful was _Boomerang,_ and even that was a weak film and was coasting on the rising popularity of Halle Berry.

@@gianthand8130 Murphy's low energy performance as Axel, the uneven tone with the violent shootout at the beginning and the silly kiddie amusement park, the lame action sequences (Axel hides behind a WOODEN BENCH to avoid henchmen shooting at him?), missing Taggert and having a forgettable replacement character in his place, and that awful scene of Axel dressed as the cartoon elephant mascot are my main problems with it.

That is true, but this situation is way different. When Hollywood run out of ideas, they remake stuff. If we see Rush Hour 4 with Jackie and Chris or Lethal Weapon 5 with Mel and Danny will be the same... movies for the fans from the 80's and 90's. Running out of ideas was recasting Rush Hour and making it TV SHOW....funny i just realised that Lethal Weapon has also remake a TV SHow recently...yeah so you can see what means running out of ideas
No, it has ideas they just stick to tried and true IPs for their big budget studio films and leave the more interesting stuff to indie productions and TV/streaming.
The funny thing about this movie for me personally is that I’ve been against going to the theatres for years just because it’s such a lousy experience in my small town… this is the first movie in years where I actually imagined what it would’ve been like to see it in the theatres
I loved how they used the music, different versions of the synth song. Even the car chase scenes, took me back to those 80s 90s movies. Loved it for what it was.
It had a good feel. I definitely liked the first 2 better and I absolutely detested foleys daughter in this movie. I get she’s been mad at him for years but The constant hate towards him was annoying.
No one plays dirty, sleazy cops better than Kevin Bacon. See Maxxxine for an even better example. I think this was an excellent return to form for Eddie Murphy. Really funny although the humor is not quite as sharp or edgy as it was in the 80s. And Murphy worked really well with Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
Totally agree with you, his relationship with his daughter doesn't fit with the "Axel Foley" character that was built in the franchise, that subplot was confusing
I totally agree with everything...including the father-daughter dynamic being out of character for Axel. He was always about being there for the people that mattered to him: Andy Bogomil, John Taggart, Billy Rosewood, Jenny Summers, and his murdered friend Mikey Tandino, getting justice for him. That he would allow his relationship with his daughter or his wife go south...just doesn't add up. However...everything else...I had so much fun with I didn't care. I loved the movie. 4/5 stars.
@@Romo69I turned it off. He’s just not funny anymore. They removed his trademark laugh too
They did a good job making this movie feel like a crazy 80’s/90’s movie. Really surprised and happy.
Man, I wanted those Beverly Hills Cop toys that Shaq was promoting to be real

I was also very surprised that it was not a cinema release, but did very much enjoy it. The only thing that I was waiting for that never came, was the iconic Axel Foley laugh. For me that is the only thing that felt different and stuck out like a sore thumb.
Yeah! Bring back the laugh!
What i love the most about the movie is how all the OG Characters were NOT forced just to be a cameo in the new movie. I think every character shows up, and story continues at a good pace.
There arent any slo mo walking in the room shots with heroic music playing, then they say, "I had a call for some Backup "
Then they die 2 minutes later.
Netflix is making mistakes by not putting these movies in theaters
Axel was great friends with the old Chief from part 1. He was there for his daughter when her dad was hurt. He had a friend with a criminal past and he heard him out instead of turning him in. Axel letting his relationship fall apart with his daughter is not in his character but is might be in hers.
It was better than I expected nice to see the original actors and Eddy doing what Eddy does lol
This should have been in theaters for sure
This was a gawddayum Bevery Hills Cop movie. THIS is how you dont turn a franchise to sheet. GG Eddie, plz more of that
Really enjoyed it. Was smiling the whole time, felt like I was in the late 80s again watching a good Eddie Murphy cop movie.
You know there are some people you just like by just listening and looking at them, Eddie Murphy is one of those people. May he live forever!
I genuinely believe that Eddie Murphy is one of the best actors ever. Chris Stuckmann actually helped me realize that! I've missed Eddie so much.
Man I miss Chris’s old reviews so much.
@@Solid_Grey Same man

@@gantz0949 why not 😭
The parent/estranged kid thing is getting old.
I am glad to see you excited for this. I last saw your previous Star Wars reviews and that was like night and day.
You nailed the estranged daughter conundrum. I When I watched the trailer, my very first thought was Axel is a loyal person. No way he would let his relationship with his daughter fall apart. Nope.
The airwolf theme song during the chopper scene.. nostalgic
The movie is great & fun to watch! Eddie Murphy is great as Axel Foley. but I would like to see more screen time to Rosewood & Taggart and better villains.
Keeping so much of the original music was such a good call because it brings all the nostalgia
Excellent Call
Jeremy you make these reviews look so easy! I’ve started posting movie reviews too and man, do they take a lot of work.
They usually go too on the nose with these modern day sequels, but this felt almost as old school as the originals. Genuinely really enjoyed it
Maybe Axel was SO loyal to work that his daughter got forgotten at times.
The Jane-Axel dynamic is a tired annoying trope. A lot of ways to make that better.
@TheHeroBleeder well it wasn't the woman from part 3 cause part 3 take place in 1994 and his daughter on her driver's ID year of birth is 1991. So who is the mother?
Watched this last night and had a blast. Really well done, and felt like they really knew what they were doing.
It was a really good movie. Should’ve been released in theatres.
The one cast member I'm happy they brought back....the music..that great 80s music!
Eddie Murphy being back was obviously a must but he did a really really freaking good job
I liked it! I had a stupid grin on my face the entire movie because I could close my eyes and still sounded like I was watching an older BHC. Eddie was funny and I thought the whole cast was great in general. Also great to see Judge Reinhold again. Albeit, briefly to an extent but still awesome to see him.
Finally, a Beverly Hills cop show based on the guy who created the crazy frog ringtone 🙌🙌
Beep beep
The theme song is great
**Death glare**
Fun fact, crazy frog is back.
❤The Happy Gilmore crossover scene was something that never thought I would see but definitely need it 🎉😂
The one thing noticeable that bothered me is that the iconic Eddie Murphy laugh was not in the movie at all.
Same here! It looked like they were just about to let him do one in the final shot, but then it didn't happen.
Now we need 48 Hrs. Left and a Golden Child sequel!!
We need Lethal Weapon 5 with Dennis Reynolds and Mac.

@@chrisretzlaff2895 That doesn’t tell me anything.
Eddie Murphy is a comedy legend
Had it sucked then people would've been saying that it's "because no one asked for another Beverly Hills Cop"
No. It sucked because it's a terrible movie.
This is exactly what I wanted, very enjoyable and easily recommended. 8/10
She’s a very successful lawyer whose client is being framed. She doesn’t reach out to him for help. His buddies ask foley for help
3 to 4 years!? Eddie was unstoppable for 2 decades. 80s and 90s....
@@burna2650 His movies weren't doing that great in the 90s.
The only one that was successful was _Boomerang,_ and even that was a weak film and was coasting on the rising popularity of Halle Berry.
@@kirk1701 guess we're forgetting about Nutty Professer, Life, Bowfinger and a host of other movies. He was one of the highest paid actors in the 90s.
@@burna2650 Out of that list you mentioned, Bowfinger, was the best and got good reception from critics and moviegoers.
However, the 'host of other movies' he did weren't that great (e.g., The Distinguished Gentleman') and showed him not on the same level of draw as he was in the 80s.
No one ever seems to mention the other reason people don't go to theatres anymore, and that's how easy it it to have a better theatre experience at home. For a couple hundred bucks you can get the equipment you need from Amazon and kick back in your own recliner and have whatever beer and snacks you want....and no sticky floors.
Imagine if they could pull this off with another Lethal Weapon movie?
Another Lethal Weapon movie is in the works. Directed by Mel Gibson.
@@stevekongliew8305 Feel like they've been saying that forever but would absolutely watch.
Not sure how I feel about it because Mel is late 60s, Glover is pushing 80, Pesci is 80 and Rene is 70. I just don't know how you make a cop movie when all the main characters are this old.
@@EddieHenderson92 When I rewatch S3 of True Detective, when the old guys are being cops I always think of what a new LW would be like
Hearing the old soundtrack from the first two movies was a welcoming surprise. A fun film to watch.
Not only was this a huge step up from Beverly Hills Cop 3, but it was also a good movie in it's own right.
What was wrong with Beverly Hills Cop 3?
@@gianthand8130 It did have some okay moments in it, but overall it didn't capture the same griddy feel that the first two movies had. It felt more child friendly and a bit more cheesy than the first two films, and Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F while not perfect captures the similar feels that the first two movies had. Also it had more of a better story than part 3 did to me and the action was way better this time around.
@@antwanjenkins6735 I see.
So I just watched it.. It’s cool he can still do the action roles like he hasn’t missed a beat.. Even the other rest of the OG cast apparently.. All we need now is more 48 Hours!
A revisit down memory lane like Bad Boys for Life; same street, different house.
Yeah! This fucking rocked! The call backs. So clever! The laugh out loud moments. To many to name! The plot twists. Kept me guessing. So unpredictable!
Is the daughter a Robot in the movie? She had like no emotions at all
Agreed. I thought that actress was awful in it. Weak link in the film.
Watching it now and this definitely should have been in theaters.
Proof that Hollywood just ran out of ideas a long time ago
That is true, but this situation is way different. When Hollywood run out of ideas, they remake stuff. Beverly Hills Cop is Eddie Murphy production, and people are asking for another movie from long long loooooong time.
Nah original movies are released nearly every week it’s just that no one watches them
thats quite true for the subscrptions apps
They have movies and shows of their own
Animated or real
@@chrisb5243 Sad but true, people say they want original movies but most of them like Horizon bomb.

This was a great movie. It should have been on movie theaters
Thanks for NOT spoiling Jeremy 😂. Will see it, I think it should have been in theaters, but I bet it.
The movie felt like an 6/10 condensed crime explanation series...
THIS is how you do a sequel right.
I loved how they used the music, different versions of the synth song. Even the car chase scenes, took me back to those 80s 90s movies. Loved it for what it was.
Fantastic movie that should’ve been in the theaters.
I watched it last night and loved it! Not the best of the 4, but better than BHC3, which I thought was fine.
Totally agree with you, his relationship with his daughter doesn't fit with the "Axel Foley" character that was built in the franchise, that subplot was confusing

Loved this movie so much
Actually I would have watched this in the theater. Great film.
It was a fun movie. I hits all the nostalgia points in a good way.
4/5 stars. I'll probably see it again.
Especially for the helicopter sequence and the mansion shoot-out...those were great!
