I really liked the movie. It makes sense that the human part isn’t yet over and they’ll make a final stab at regaining control before the apes truly take over. I also really liked how you could see the first steps towards the ape’s later social structure: the chimps getting interested in science, the orangutan's wisdom and them eventually becoming the cultural leaders and finally the gorillas as the military. They aren’t there yet, but the early signs are there and I can’t wait to see how that will evolve in what we see in the original planet of the apes.
Great review, as always Dan. Your critiques always come from the heart and thus with total honesty and balance, thank you. Nice to see Kevin Durrand getting a second movie appearance this year (albeit that this one is a performance capture!), he's talented and I wish we saw him more.
People want a movie where the apes are the exclusive focus. Problem is Planet of the Apes was never really about just the apes. It was always about humans reacting to, shocked by, struggling against, etc. the apes.
I donr understand what Dan wants? The struggle for power and the fallout of imbalance for control between humans and apes is what makes this franchise intriguing.
I agree that human conflict is necessary for an Apes story to work, but the way this movie handled it was still a poor choice. They could've presented an interesting dilemma where the apes are simultaneously indebted to humanity while also treating them as animals. Or speculate on if apes are doomed to repeat the path of the human race. Or ask whether Ceaser would've prioritized helping humans even if they lacked intelligence. But they didn't do anything like that. Instead of finding some new, unexplored twist on this conflict, they seem perfectly content to restart the exact story we just finished
Sounds like a decent follow up to the new trilogy. The movie however has a lot to live up to, especially to the second film of the trilogy "Dawn of The Planet of the Apes", which i considered to be not only the best Planet of the Apes movie ever made but one of the best sequels ever made perioud. Chronicles of the Banana Republic: A Topsy-Turvy Odyssey on the Extraterrestrial Jungle Gyms of Simian Sovereignty, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Chimpocalypse on the Planet of the Apes
I was a bit let down by the movie, but for the opposite reason Dan has - I wanted more human elements. That's the most interesting part of the setting to me. If they didn't want to show that, at least show a more interesting ape society than a small tribe in the jungle.
Maybe if they followed the development of Proximus and his rise to power and then having Kingdom be the followup to that. They could've shown the legacy of Caesar's story and the corruption of his teachings to set up Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
I was very worried with some of the trailers, even some of the later trailers, so it's good to hear that the final work at least matches the previous trilogy
But I wanted to see a movie about that reign that have very little human presence. Could we have see a movie where Proximus is a little ape and we watch his rise to power. So the movie fully focuses on an ape story with little human screen time.
@@kelechi321 I think these films will always have a human presence no matter what because it brings the budget down and I know a big chunk of the audience will not go see these movies if it was 100% CGI apes.
Yeah really good point about the third act, would have been a nice twist to have the same ending but have the third act driven more by Noa’s story. What was interesting was how jarring the continued presence of sentient humans on the planet was though, and the almost disgust at Mae’s opportunism compared to Noa’s innocence and altruism. Noa is the hero here, and to convince an audience to cheer for the apes with a new hero (not Caesar) is an impressive feat!

Great review Dan, I completely agree. I thought everything with the Apes was really compelling but the big reveals about the human story felt like it took us back to where we were in the previous two films.
I have a feeling that this trilogy is either about a peace treaty between both apes and humans, or human uniting and have a battle for dominance between apes and humans. Which makes sense, because the virus had held back humans from taking it's rightful place, you'd see that in the War of the Planet of the Apes.
I personally think that the complex relationships between humanity and apes and the struggles of them constantly failing to live in harmony is one of the highlights of these stories.

I totally hear what you’re saying about the idea of them bringing the humans back into this franchise however, I think that it will benefit it only because of the fact that I honestly don’t know what else they could do with only focusing on apes for two more movies of a trilogy. Given that there are humans that are still alive (and I will say nothing more more of that to not spoil) I wonder if this trilogy could end in a way where maybe it is better for the apes but we just don’t see it yet.

I think this is what I wanted the star wars sequels to do but didn't, move away from the skywalkers. Its good they moved away from caesar as they did hear.
I didn't realize how long the title was til I had to type it out in discord after watching last night. I really enjoyed it. I do wish they didn't jump straight into Rise of the Planet of the Humans. I'd like to see an even more advanced Ape civilization but I'm still looking forward to what comes next.
If the reboots segue into the storyline of the original franchise then this is perfect. In the original movies of the 60’s and 70’s the apes are ruling thousands of years into the future. They will show humans efforts to retake earth and how it all plays out.
Watching this review after I saw the movie last night because I've become extremely sensitive to spoilers over the years 😂 I'm glad I had no idea Mae was smart or William H Macy was in this or what Raka's deal was. Going in blind was awesome and I loved the film. I think it's a huge misstep that they are trying to bring humans back into the picture. I think it would've been more interesting if the apes were farther along the civilization process. I think early farming villages over hunter gatherer would've been interesting. And more politics than just brute action.
I kinda want the films to get into the weirder scfi elements of the older films. The Forbidden Zone, Mutants, and maybe introduce Dr. Hasling and perhaps the astronauts!!!!
I do think we’ll get the astronauts mentioned in Rise back again somehow and while it won’t necessarily be a remake of the first movie I do wonder if it might end in such a way that you could hypothetically then go and watch the original PotA movie.
We need a film about the Mutants, one for the Lawgiver, castes and classes in ape society. At least those 3 before we can have POTA and the astronauts returning. They have a 1500 year window still I think.
We are of mixed minds with this as one of us really enjoyed it while the other really didnt. But we both agree that this franchise needs to stop and that this story did not need to be told.
We, as a species, are notorious for not being able to ascertain a metaphorical message. So, no matter what, a human element needs to be present if it wants to stay within the franchise. Keeping humans in the movie dumbstruck down the message so that everyone will understand it. I, like you, think an all ape movie could be fascinating.
Good review. Still looking for a reviewer that talked about misinterpreted philosophy and dogma - which drives the underlying conflict of the entire film
My wife has seen every one of the new planet of the apes movies and she couldn't even remember what the last one was about, leading to low interest in this one.
I just saw the movie, and it was ok/good ... but that's it. It kinda works as a standalone movie with a minimal Caesar reference. The "human" with the Lara Croft butt-tight-jeans and tank top was like ... really? They did stick to a story and CGI wasn't gratuitously thrown in in lieu of the story. The ending was lame. I watched the originals at the drive-in as a kid and everyone since. I'm going to have to give it a 3/5 stars, good watch but no where near the impact of the trilogy (which was outstanding).

I haven’t seen it yet but that does confirm my fear that the series will begin to focus on humans as the driving protagonists. Of the previous trilogy, I think Rise is generally regarded as the weakest because it gave so much screen time to the humans
I pretty much agree with your take. Think the watching the new ape world with the different clans etc and their own internal conflict was way better than the human storyline. That did not resonate with me at all. I think you are right that it should be about the apes.
Just saw the film. It definitely keeps up the quality in so many ways. The animators and performance capture actors have outdone themselves again - WETA are the gods of this space and it’s good to hear them roar. The writing is mostly solid, but there are three scenes that really bring down the quality of the whole film through their sheer laziness and contrived set up. I won’t spoil the film, but you’ll know them for when a smart character does something inexplicably dumb, and leaves themselves incredibly vulnerable for no good reason except the story wanted something to happen to them and had no better way of getting them in position than for them to walk like lambs to slaughter. That really brought the film down for me. I really loved the librarian character - wish they actually utilized him more. Wasn’t sure what the point of him was by the end, as his inclusion at first seemed like it would be a massive deal, and then his knowledge and teaching affected nothing. But maybe that was the point.
"Freya Allan doesn't give my favorite performance in the movie..." Dan is always so nice. I've seen 3 seasons of The Witcher, & Freya Allan doesn't give my favorite performance in the series, either. Tho, TBF, many of the performances in The Witcher are not my favorite...
To me the point of the series is we are living in the Planet of the Apes now. Human and primates are part of the same family tree. We just like to view ourselves as beyond nature
Saw and early screening, and I'd pretty much agree with Dan. It's a really good, thought-provoking, heartfelt movie that lands just a tad shy of great. Man, humans really do make everything worse.
I think this will ultimately lead to the true battle of the apes.....so it'll all depends if you rout for the apes or humans. If the humans are all killed off why would you wnat to go to a future movie of planet of the apes?
This entire thing happened just because James Franco wanted his dad to remember stuff!

My mom wanted to try the 4DX cinema and I was trying to find an interesting movie that could perfectly be our first 4DX experience, I think Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes could be a good choice
Personally I’m very curious to know what happened to Cornelius & Nova
I think this is what I wanted the star wars sequels to do but didn't, move away from the skywalkers. Its good they moved away from caesar as they did hear.
Seeing it Saturday and I can’t wait!
I didn't realize how long the title was til I had to type it out in discord after watching last night. I really enjoyed it. I do wish they didn't jump straight into Rise of the Planet of the Humans. I'd like to see an even more advanced Ape civilization but I'm still looking forward to what comes next.
I enjoyed it. Kept thinking of how awesome the mocap was on Noah and Roka. I don’t want to see more humans but I am interested in knowing more.
Saw this last night and loved it! 😀👍👍
Can’t wait for this
Man Dan is psychic with me lool everything he is saying is what I was thinking about watching this
In my personal opinion POA has been the marker for where VFX is at the moment sense the latest series -- more than Avatar for sure
Why is CGI getting worse? At no point did i think that is actually an ape. Caesar at least seemed real at times and that was ten years ago.
I strongly disagree
@@alexp601nobody cares
@@jasonadersonwedion9874 that isn’t true
Yes, but isn’t it also very unrealistic to expect Man to just go away quietly that would never happen
I agree though I'm kinda down on the sequel setup with the human story going forward but it could be good I guess we'll see, they already managed to surprise me with this one.
I was going to buy a Blu-ray set of the original 3, but I guess I have to wait. This is interesting.

@@BegsYourPardon I feel like Caesar has kinda been canonized as the law giver.
I'm going to see this Saturday. Can't wait, I loved the Rise trilogy.
"... made all the worse by doing everything he's doing in Ceasar's name."
Absolutely no real world analogies i could make here.
Nope.
None at all.
The first trilogy of Planet of the Apes was fantastic. I look forward to seeing this one.
Good review. Still looking for a reviewer that talked about misinterpreted philosophy and dogma - which drives the underlying conflict of the entire film
New movies need to be about Apes enter in contact with a man that comes from the past and start a revolucion for peace between man and ape.
My wife has seen every one of the new planet of the apes movies and she couldn't even remember what the last one was about, leading to low interest in this one.
Agreed that I’m not too interested in a man vs ape tug of war of power for another trilogy but in reverse.
Dan's opinion seems right down the middle compared to others ; Jeremy Jahns, John Campea and Stuckmann.
My crew is very curious on this film now!
People love these movies because of how good the motion capture is. Imagine if other franchises were able to get this good of motion capture
It seems like it took 4 films of the new franchise to finally "remake" the first movie of the original franchise.
Off topic, but are you going to a video on the Spider-Monday Box Office after No Way Home re-releases?
Makind went Feral: Wearing Jeans 👖 & Tank Tops & make up
🤣I think they didn’t think it through
Well yes but actually no
You know her character was not feral right??!
@@Emeka_ri on Trailers they show setup: apparently Man has devolved to the degree that they are mostly incapable of complex thought or Speech/ & yet all humans are running around with Clothes from the Mall/ I haven’t seen the film & won’t to be honest seems like a waste of time & money : correct me if I’m wrong? Are the humans pretending to be Feral or something? & secretly they can all talk & think ?
@@Emeka_ri are they pretending to not be able to think & talk? Is she the Special one that can while everyone else can’t? Haven’t seen anything but trailers/ what’s the deal then?
I haven’t seen it yet but that does confirm my fear that the series will begin to focus on humans as the driving protagonists. Of the previous trilogy, I think Rise is generally regarded as the weakest because it gave so much screen time to the humans
I pretty much agree with your take. Think the watching the new ape world with the different clans etc and their own internal conflict was way better than the human storyline. That did not resonate with me at all. I think you are right that it should be about the apes.
Great review
I really didn’t like the ending. I don’t want more humans.
The real question is, does an ape ever have an eagle perched on its arm, like it shows on that poster? If so, that should be an automatic See It Now!.
Yes
@@DanMurrellMovies Didn't expect an actual reply. Thanks for the confirmation! 😀
good video thanks
Are they ever going to connect Marky Mark with these?
To me the point of the series is we are living in the Planet of the Apes now. Human and primates are part of the same family tree. We just like to view ourselves as beyond nature
Saw and early screening, and I'd pretty much agree with Dan. It's a really good, thought-provoking, heartfelt movie that lands just a tad shy of great. Man, humans really do make everything worse.
I think this will ultimately lead to the true battle of the apes.....so it'll all depends if you rout for the apes or humans. If the humans are all killed off why would you wnat to go to a future movie of planet of the apes?
